Chapter Ten
Kagome strode around the courtyard of her family's shrine that surrounded the go-shinboku, stopping every few paces and reciting the incantation from the old, tattered book that she held, opened, in her hands.
“…spirit of life, return to me my mystical entity…”
Sesshomaru merely stood aside, watching her with a high level of skepticism. He was beginning to think that he had more spiritual power in his little finger than the miko possessed in her entire body.
Kagome was becoming ever more uneasy about Sesshomaru; it was clear his patience was on the brink of dissolution.
A deep vibration, like that of a resounding shock wave, suddenly swept the courtyard, a powerful gust blasting over them.
Having spoken the incantation once, some fifty paces from where Sesshomaru stood, Kagome spun towards him, a bit of a defiant smile played her lips.
“This is it!”
She chanted the mantra a second time…
“I don't know, Sango, I think it's still too soon to say anything to Inuyasha about Kikyo. He's so blinded by his ideals of her,” Miroku was saying as the pair flew above the tree hopping hanyou.
Kikyo walked more slowly and steadily at the back of the group. Jaken was pulling Aun by the bridle; Rin straddling the scaly, dragonish youkai with Shippo perched behind her once more.
The closer the set of travelers drew to the Southern Shrine, the more Sango's intuition told her that something was seriously wrong. Kikyo was up to something underhanded, she just knew it. But why?
She couldn't quite put her finger on…
A hand caressing her rear caused her mind to grind to a halt, eyes popping. Instinctively, she swung backwards, her hand catching Miroku spectacularly across the face.
“Good God man! Give it a rest!” she yelled, her face beet red.
A pink hand print and a devilishly contented smile covered the monks face.
“Just trying to ease the stress, besides, I never let the opportunity pass me by…” he sighed happily…
Kikyo glanced skyward, hearing the slap to Miroku's cheek. The demon slayer was very wary of her, she knew this.
She'd have to be quick in her abilities and words as she invoked the powers of the shrine, then twice as swift to bring forth the amulets powers, sealing the shrine forever. The offering would have to be taken swiftly, before they noticed that she'd even presented the other miko as sacrifice.
Kikyo didn't want any possible means of time travel to exist; nothing that could give Kagome the slightest chance of returning to the Feudal Era or Inuyasha.
Inuyasha would be easily fooled; he did trust her indisputably…
Jaken trekked on, humming gleefully under his breath. If everything went accordingly, he'd have his beloved Lord Sesshomaru back before nightfall. The miko had promised him…
Plus, there would be bonuses; a broken-hearted Inuyasha was definitely worth the trip he'd had to take to retrieve the amulet, not to mention the demise of that infuriating miko!
She'd been a thorn in Jaken's side from the beginning. He vividly remembered her meddling in Lord Sesshomaru's plans in the past. Hell was the least to be paid by any mortal foolish enough to thwart Lord Sesshomaru.
Besides, one less human wasn't his problem, as long as Rin was kept safe. He shuddered to think of Lord Sesshomaru's wrath if anything were to happen to the child; there may be one less youkai…
`Kagome, I'll find you…' Inuyasha told himself, alighting from one tree branch to another.
When Tetsusiga hadn't been able to transform, it drove home the fact how vital she'd become to him. He felt sick with himself for even entertaining the idea of being with Kikyo again.
What had passed had passed, it was time to look to forwards…
He lifted his nose up, inhaling deeply. Catching the scent of saltiness in the air, they were now coming out of the green northern hills, the waters of the Southern Seas sparkling in the distance.
A single, deep vibration, like a tangible sonic boom, passed over the group, stopping them dead in their tracks.
“No,” Kikyo hissed softly under her breath, feeling the workings of a spiritual power.
“What was that?” an inquisitive, baffled Shippo asked, looking up to the treetops at Inuyasha. The hanyou's hand was on his now useless sword, his lips pulled back threateningly.
Kirara touched down next to Aun just as Inuyasha leapt from the tree.
“I don't know…Inuyasha! Your beads!” Sango exclaimed, pointing at the prayer beads that had hung around his neck for as long as she had known him.
Kikyo came up behind them, her eyes narrowed to slits upon seeing the beads glowing bright red. How could she have overlooked that ancient power…?
Kagome chanted the mantra for the third and final time; `spirit of infinite life, return to me my mystical entity…'
Then she held her breath, praying against the odds that it would work…
Inuyasha put a clawed finger up under the beads, looking down at them. What was going on?
“Inuyasha! I can see through you!” Rin shouted, all eyes now looking at the hanyou's body.
True enough, the landscape behind could be seen, slightly tinted red from his coat of the fire rat. Quickly, Kikyo brought her hands together in front of her, silently muttering a counter incantation to herself. She couldn't lose him to the spiritual power pulling at him.
She had begun too late, Inuyasha went from fading hanyou to completely non-existent, vanishing before their eyes…
Looking up from the beads of submission that he'd come to detest, he found himself staring into the pair of dark chocolate eyes that belonged to the one who controlled him with said beads.
“Kagome?”
Hurtling herself into his arms, he felt a rush of relief, happiness at seeing her well. His hatred of the beads replaced with a breathtaking feeling of warmth, spreading into every crevice of his being. He pulled her tighter into his embrace.
Stroking the back of her raven hair, he whispered into her ear. “I'm so happy to see you…”
Author's Note: Just to cover the basis, I don't own Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi does. Also, please let me know what you think! Constructive reviews are most welcome…
