Chapter Sixteen
Rin instinctively jumped onto Kikyo's back as soon as Jaken had pounced at the miko, snatching at the glowing amulet at her throat.
Miroku momentarily recoiled at the vile hiss that escaped her as she wrestled to get the small green youkai detached from her. It sounded…inhuman…
Rin, grabbing her around the throat and dangling down her back, struggled along with her cohort to remove the amulet. She wasn't going to let this back-stabbing, lifeless witch hurt her Lord Sesshomaru or Kagome, for that matter.
“What the hell?” came Sango's voice, another flash of electricity in the sky silhouetted her against the doorway.
Miroku, recovering from what he'd heard, scrambled to try and pull Jaken off Kikyo.
“Jaken! What are you doing? She's trying to open the doorway…”
“Rin! Stop!” Shippo's voice ripped through the bustle, pleading with his young friend.
Gasping, Rin's little hand found the chain and began to tug. “She…she's going to sacrifice Ka…”
Kikyo reached around, wrapping her hand in Rin's hair, pulling so hard the child shrieked in agony.
“Bite your wicked tongue, child!” she whispered harshly.
“Let go of her!” Jaken yelled, now fighting against Miroku and tugging at the amulet. The chain finally gave, breaking and Jaken fell to the wooden floor.
Kikyo fixed him with a dark, deadly look. There was no way she had come this far in reclaiming Inuyasha to have these imbeciles ruin her plans.
“Shall I seal your Lord on the other side, you traitorous toad?!”
Miroku moved in front of Jaken, feeling compelled to defend the small youkai from the miko. He held his staff up, defensively in front of him.
“What the hell are you talking about?” he demanded from the fuming Kikyo.
“Miroku! Look!” Sango called out, pointing towards the stone. The doorway had appeared, dark and threatening. A strong gust was blowing from it on this side of time.
Kikyo seized the advantage and dodged around Miroku at Jaken. Rin was still being pulled along by her hair as Kikyo played a violent game of tug-o-war with Jaken, trying to reclaim the amulet.
The gem was glowing brighter than ever.
“You're too late.” She hissed. “The power of the amulet was activated the moment I stepped into the shrine. The second Kagome tries to step through the doorway; her soul will be spirited away by the Shinigami.”
“Nooooo!” Rin squeaked, her hands trying to free Kikyo's entangled grasp in her hair.
The next instant, her rump was hitting the floor, she was free. A white flash streaked across the small shrine room, scooping Kikyo from her feet and pinning her to the wall in the decrepit structure.
“Hands off, foul wench.” Sesshomaru snarled menacingly at her.
“M..my Lord!” squealed Jaken, happily.
Miroku, who'd been helping Jaken to his feet and Sango, who'd been attempting to tend Rin, began to look around for their friends upon realizing that Sesshomaru had made it back through the time portal.
“Where's Inuyasha and Kagome?” Shippo asked.
“Sesshomaru, let her down.” Miroku bravely grabbed Inuyasha's brother's arm, trying to ease the youkai's grip on the miko.
“No,” Rin began, “Kagome can't…”
“Quiet Rin,” Sesshomaru ordered. He was rigid as he glared at Kikyo. Her dark eyes met his golden ones with an intense hatred that he'd never witnessed on any person with spiritual gifts before, it was most unusual. He leaned in towards her, inhaling deeply…

Kagome and Inuyasha stood beside the doorway, eyeing it apprehensively. Sota was sitting near them, cradling his broken arm. Kagome couldn't help but feel deep pride at her brother's act of heroism.
“Do you think it's safe?” she asked, indicating towards the opening.
She gasped when she felt her hands being taken up into Inuyasha's. He pulled her a little closer to him. Sota averted his eyes, a pink blush rising to his cheeks at seeing his sister embraced.
“Kagome, there's something…you need to know…” he began.
His gold eyes were soft, but sad and concerned. Kagome steeled herself. Inuyasha only looked at her like that when revealing somber news.
“If…if you come back now, then there won't be any way for you to return again.” He said it firmly, matter of factly, knowing that this would probably be it. How could he say it? How could he ask her to give up her life here and come be with him? Have a life with him, because…he loved her…
“Wh…what?” Kagome's eyes widened. Give up her family? Or her friends? Was this the cruel choice that was before her? How could she give up Inuyasha, the only man she'd ever loved?
Inuyasha pulled her closer still, her heart caught in her throat. His musky scent permeated her senses. He perched his chin atop her head, breathing in her scent as well.
“I guess we are going to have to say good-bye.” His voice was husky. It was at the tip of his tongue, dammit! He couldn't do it, though, say those simple words; be mine forever.
Her voice softly reached his ears. “I…I don't want to say good-bye, Inuyasha…I can't…”
A flicker of hope licked throughout him, as a blood curdling scream cleaved through their moment from within the doorway.
They both jolted at the same time, Kagome felt a tightening deep sadness tugging at the recesses of her soul. Inuyasha had released her and bounded towards the black doorway without a second thought.
“That was Kikyo!”
He turned towards Kagome, torn. Say good-bye? He really didn't want to, but…there wasn't any time. Regardless of his love for Kagome, he couldn't allow Kikyo to be harmed. He felt that he at least owed her that.
Kagome dropped her head; hot tears coursed a river down her cheeks. Once again she'd rise to the occasion and be the better person. Let him go to the one he truly loved.
“Go…go to her Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha, confused beyond all boundaries of reason, struggled with this. If he went, he'd never see Kagome again…this was the end. She didn't see the indecision, the half step that he took back toward her.
Another scream.
“GO!” Kagome yelled, raising her head furiously, fixing him with a dead set, tear streaked stare.
She mustn't love him the same, he decided, and with a curt nod of farewell, he leaped back through the doorway.
