Chapter Fifteen
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits at the bright, pulsating light that emanated from the massive tree. He was floored by the Spirits refusal to empower the amulet, allowing passage back to his time. Being rejected was not something that sat well with the stoic youkai, nor something that occurred often enough for him to have to deal with.
A barely audible hiss escaped his curled lips. “What did you say?”
The unearthly voice addressed them with finality. “The Shinigami no longer grant use of the Amulets power. An evil energy used a miko centuries ago to deceive, betray and eventually murder innocents. Shinigami won't be used in underhanded schemes between youkai and humans.”
Kagome, who's face was beginning to turn scarlet under Sesshomaru's ironclad hold, didn't miss the impact of these words. An evil energy? Miko?
Inuyasha took half a step toward his brother as Sesshomaru's attention was diverted by the ancient, speaking plant. If he could only get close enough, he could snatch Kagome fast before Sesshomaru had the opportunity to snap her neck.
“I am offering this miko…” Sesshomaru began again, trying to barter.
The voice cut across him, fueling the rising fire that was already lit and burning in the pit of his belly.
“I'm sorry. We will not accept any offerings. This is our final decision.”
Sesshomaru growled lowly, Inuyasha slipped a little closer. Kagome was now a violet color as her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, her lungs becoming desperate for air. He had to act now or she was going to suffocate in Sesshomaru's grasp.
As he bared his clawed toes into the earth ready to pounce, Sesshomaru was suddenly nudged forward slightly. His eyes popping in surprise, he turned to see what had hit him from behind. Inuyasha took the chance and grabbed Kagome as a high pitched voice pealed the air.
“LET GO OF MY SISTER!”

Miroku eyed Kikyo suspiciously as she knelt before a smooth stone, which, in the perverted monk's minds eye, had a phallic resemblance, and was completely covered in sealing sutras. As the clay miko chanted under her breath, her fingers held before her in prayer posture, the sutras began to pull themselves free one by one from the stone.
He noticed Rin was also watching Kikyo with an air of mistrust. And was it his imagination, or was Jaken hovering over her, as if ready to jump her? What the hell was he up to?
Sango, Shippo and Kirara stood in the doorway of the shrine. As Kikyo spoke, each sutra liberating itself from the stone that housed the temporal power, the sky began to streak with lightning, a static feeling clung to the air.
Whatever she was doing, it seemed to be working. Maybe, Sango thought with a sigh, she'd been wrong; had misjudged Kikyo's intent…
A loud crack of thunder and fast moving, foreboding black clouds gathering above abruptly halted the demon slayers thoughts. Eyebrows furrowed, Sango suddenly realized something ominous was happening.
Kikyo murmured the mantra as the aquamarine gem of the amulet began to glow heatedly against her chest, from where it still hung.
A wavering black opening began to form in front of them, then another raging thunderbolt rang in their ears and Jaken leapt towards her…

Sesshomaru wrenched Sota from the ground by the scruff of his neck. The third grader flailed and kicked against his powerful captor, trying desperately to defend his sister.
Inuyasha, holding Kagome to him, swung out towards Sesshomaru with his claws.
“Drop the kid!” the hanyou ordered.
Sesshomaru, already infuriated by the fact that his plans were thwarted by the damn tree spirit, smirked at his brother. Stuck here, away from Rin, with this idiot, left an even more sour taste in his mouth. Any compassion that might've dwelt in his body had evaporated, along with his hope.
“I think I've had enough.” Sesshomaru stated, and then grabbed Sota's face.
“Say good-bye, child…”
Kagome screamed as Inuyasha made for Sota, when an earsplitting clap of thunder roared, freezing them all.
A tall, rectangular doorway appeared beside the tree. It stood there, free of hinges or structure, like and empty black hole.
A screaming childs voice from somewhere within the blackness reached their ears. Sesshomaru felt tendrils of dread grip and clench down inside of him. He knew that scream…
“Oh my God! That's Rin!” Kagome gasped, as the mismatched group stared at the mysterious doorway.
Sota hit the ground with a thud; Kagome heard a snap, as Sesshomaru dropped the boy, and then ran, disappearing into the black doorway…
Authors Note: Once again, for all copyrighting sake, I don't own Inuyasha. Rumiko Takahashi does. I'd like to thank the few who have reviewed and anyone who is reading and enjoying the story. Don't worry; I shall finish this story if it's the last thing I do, so bear with me through the block! Arigato!
