Chapter Fourteen

Sesshomaru, his agility and speed far surpassing that of Jaken's, closed in on the Amulet of Ages hiding place. Inuyasha, with Kagome piggybacked, was hot on his brother's heels.

With an occasional glance thrown over his shoulder, Sesshomaru smirked at the furious look on brother's face. The idiot hanyou knew that they were being led into a trap, yet they still persisted; all in effort to save the limp form of the boy under his arm.

Inuyasha was so easily predictable. His soft spot for mortals was eventually going to lead to his downfall; Kikyo had already once demonstrated said weakness when she'd sealed him to the tree some fifty years ago…

An image of Rin's smiling, sweet face swam to the forefront of Sesshomaru's mind. An angry tightening in his chest forced him to chastise himself. Rin was a different situation…she was special. And, he was not nearly as tender with humans as his moronic brother!

The smog filled city now lie behind them as he neared the base of the mountain that held the gem that would reunite him with Rin.

Looking down upon the green landscape to the clearing that Sango had spotted, Miroku suddenly tightened his grip around the demon slayers waist.

She scowled, expecting some type of sexual lechery on the monks part, but his cry of surprise and pointing finger diverted her attention. The sparkling ocean had distracted her from seeing the small wooden building a short distance from them.

“I see it!” Miroku shouted down to the earthbound company.

Shippo, who'd been taking a brief snooze on Sango's shoulder, jolted at once. His green eyes alert, ears perked.

Kikyo's hand went, once more, to the vibrant gem around her throat. Her eyes narrowed as she looked down the path that led to the crude shrine that had fallen into serious disrepair.

It would all be over shortly…

Jaken leaned over to Rin, who sat in front of him atop Aun.

“Remember what I said Rin. When she…”

Rin nodded furiously. Her doe eyes full of concern and understanding.

“I know Master Jaken. Don't worry, I won't fail.”

Her resolve was set. Not only would she not allow Kikyo to harm someone as kind as Kagome, but she'd make sure Lord Sesshomaru was returned to her, regardless of the miko's feelings for Inuyasha.

Jaken had made it a point of telling her his concern about Kikyo's apparent mania at having Inuyasha to herself. Would she go back on her promise to bring Sesshomaru back, just so she could be with the hanyou?

Rin wasn't sure and not about to find out.

The sky began to turn bright orange out on the horizon as the traveling party came to the end of their journey outside the Southern Shrine…

An enormous, gnarled tree stood by its lonesome in a large open glade at the base of the mountain, a tangled labyrinth of roots bared up from under the ground.

Kagome was instantly aware of the spiritual energy surrounding the tree. It had probably gone unnoticed for centuries by ordinary people, the shinigami protecting it by cloaking it in their own spiritual powers.

Sesshomaru walked around the back of the tree, disappearing from sight, due to the girth of the plant. Inuyasha landed among the massive root system.

“Sesshomaru! Let the kid go!”

Kagome, hopping off Inuyasha's back, heard a deep chuckling from behind the tree. Sesshomaru reemerged, a beautiful aquamarine jewel hanging from a tarnished chain, dangled from his clawed fingers.

“I'll trade mine if you trade yours, Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru taunted, indicating to Sota and Kagome with a curt nod of his head.

Pulling Tetsusiga from its sheath, Inuyasha lunged at his brother.

“Not on your life!”

Kagome screamed, watching the blurred image of Sesshomaru dodge Inuyasha as Tetsusiga bit into the trunk of the gargantuan tree.

“You fool! This is the only way!” Sesshomaru growled.

“I never thought you'd sink this low! Bartering and sacrificing human life! You're disgusting!” Inuyasha yelled, yanking the sword from the tree and moving toward Sesshomaru again.

Sesshomaru smirked, evaded the fanged sword, coming to a stop directly behind Kagome, who was still watching the brothers with opened mouth shock.

Like lightning, Sesshomaru tossed Sota aside, reached around Kagome, putting her in a strangle hold. Inuyasha stopped dead in his tracks, his golden eyes bored heatedly into his brother's.

“Once again, Inuyasha, you've failed to save your woman…” Sesshomaru sneered.

“Let her go…” Inuyasha hissed.

Kagome had a good idea that the earth would cease moving around the sun before Sesshomaru released her. She felt his hot breath on the nape of her neck as he began to speak.

“Spirits of Sky and Heavenly Bodies, hear me! Accept my sacrificial offering in exchange for use of the Amulet of Ages!” His deep voice was almost a chant as he held the gem up towards the tree.

Kagome struggled against Sesshomaru's ironclad grip. Inuyasha growled viciously, both hands gripping Tetsusiga that his veins were straining to escape his flesh.

There was no way he could get a shot off with Kagome in the way. Yet there was no way he was going to lose her to his homicidal brother who was hell bent doing anything to return to his human child…

What could he do? He couldn't bear the idea of life without her; he wouldn't live an empty, meaningless lift…not again.

The loud thump of Tetsusiga hitting the dirt brought both Kagome's and Sesshomaru's attention back to Inuyasha.

“Sesshomaru! Let her go…use me instead…”

Kagome's eyes popped with surprise. What the hell was he trying to do?

“Inuyasha! No!”

Sesshomaru cocked a quizzical eyebrow at his sibling.

“You are that intent on saving this girl?”

Inuyasha merely glowered at him.

“I need her spiritual power, but…” Sesshomaru began, when a bright white light began to shine from within the deep gouges etched into the trunk of the tree.

A voice, one Inuyasha recognized as the same that had come from Jaken's staff of two heads, spoke.

“Who calls upon the Spirit of this Sacred Tree?” it boomed.

On the other side of time, Kikyo opened the door to the shrine that held the stone monument in which housed the temporal energy. Her grin was devilishly evil as she put her hands together, readying to invoke the power within…
