Chapter 2
You Can’t Just Forget
“Ka-GO-me”
Kagome blinked at the girl waving a hand rapidly in front of her face.
“Man, I’ve been calling you for like five minutes now.” Yuki said with mock concern. “You gotta get your head out of them clouds K’gome.”
“Oh, sorry.” Kagome apologized flatly.
She was still trying to shake the memories from her mind. Ever since she came back home she had been subject to bouts of depression. Some days were good days, when she could function, and even smile sometimes. Then there were bad days, she would be tired and cranky, and spend most of her time lost in thought. This was a bad day, the raven haired girl mused, sighing heavily.
“Oi! There you go again!” Yuki laughed, she seemed to be amused by Kagome’s wandering mind. She didn’t know all the depression behind it and probably mistook it as some kind of A.D.D.
This time Kagome smiled “Sorry Yuki.”
Kagome went back to folding, trying earnestly to pay attention to Yuki’s chatter. Her energetic coworker began to tease her, probably hoping to retain her attention.
“It’s a good thing they had me do the ironing with your attention span, Kagome. If they left it to you there would be burn holes in everything.” Yuki laughed jovially, and Kagome smirked half heartedly at the jibe. “I know how excited you must be to get out of here and head to college.” She said more seriously, glancing at her companion. “I can tell there is something about this place that just don’t sit right with you.”
Kagome was surprised at how much attention Yuki had actually paid. She was right, everything here hurt so badly to be around. Kagome wanted out.
Recovering from her shock at her friend’s astuteness, Kagome plastered on her cheesiest smile and chirped back lightly.
“Now that’s not it at all Yuki. I am just kinda bored here. Going stir crazy you know.”
Yuki stopped what she was doing. She stared at Kagome, skepticism written across her face.
“It’s nothing a little college atmosphere won’t cure.” Kagome waved her hand dismissively.
This time, Yuki sighed. She looked for a moment as if she was going to try and dig deeper into this. Shrugging, the woman seemed to abdicate that thought quickly and instead smiled at Kagome warmly.
“Sure, a little partying would do you some good. You’re pretty indoors-y, and all that time you spent bedridden with every sickness known to man… I can imagine.”
Kagome blinked as Yuki turned back to her work. Indoors-y? If you only knew. Kagome sighed and continued on in her work, relieved to stave off what would otherwise be an extremely distressing conversation.
. . . .
Later on as Kagome walked home she fell back into her thoughts. They didn’t have to be about Inuyasha or her friends in the Feudal Era. Most of the time it was just things of no real importance, it was more of an internal distraction. But her thoughts had caused her to close herself off from everyone.
As her mind began to wander she saw her friends faces in the people that passed her by, she swore she saw Shippo, but it was just a red headed little girl. She had to do a double take to make sure. Kagome felt an ache pulse through her heart when she confirmed that it was not her kitsune friend.
Kagome frowned.
-Memory-
After she had returned home from the Feudal Era the well sealed itself closed, despite the whole Shikon Jewel she had with her. Kagome tried everything that she could think of to get back. In the end she only suffered another crushing blow. This one last betrayal had left her without even her friends to comfort her.
Kagome snapped. The broken girl poured herself into anything and everything she could to distract herself. She became consumed by her school and work. Kagome shut everyone out of her life, slipping into a deep depression. This world, that she had returned to, seemed to loose its vibrancy. It was if a veil of grey had been pulled over everything.
Yet, through all of this, she somehow managed to get accepted into college, despite her previously floundering grades and poor attendance.
---
What a miracle. Kagome thought balefully.
Everything since then began to numb over, and life, as Kagome originally knew it, went on. Despite all that had happened, Kagome pushed on through her life, accepting the hand dealt to her, and hardening emotionally to the cruel and guileful world. She retained her spirit and fire, remaining fierce in spite of the misfortunes that had befallen her.
The young woman pressed on unrelenting in her new life, for fear of stopping to think on her future. Love was a distasteful thought to Kagome now; dating was tedious and left her irritated rather than emotionally comforted. Subsequently she avoided it, despite the rigorous efforts of her friends. This only served to alienate Kagome even more. Unwittingly Kagome was making herself more alone than she ever had been. If she realized this, though, there was nothing saying that she would change it.
At least in all of this mess that was her life she had some comforts; she could no longer feel any pain, although, really she couldn’t feel anything else either. But at least, he was happy.
Kagome was drawn out of her thoughts as she missteped and realized she had already made it all the way to the top of the immense stairway leading to the shrine.
Well that was quick.
A light breeze shifted across her, combing through her midnight tresses and washing her with a cool feeling and a woodsy scent. Kagome frowned, shivering. She noticed the painted pink and purple sky, and the way the dying light filtered through the leaves of the trees. The cast shadows of the leaves danced delicately on the ground and Kagome was too easily reminded of that day.
Against her better judgment, she made her way to the Goshinboku. Memories would not let themselves be drowned this night. Kagome knew she would be plagued with thoughts she didn’t want any part of if she did not relent and instead dredge up those that this day seemed to want from her.
Standing before the tree of ages, the haunted girl inhaled slowly. The air here always seemed a bit cleaner and lighter to Kagome. There was a peace about this spot that even reached her tormented soul. But tonight there would be no such peace, as she let the memories roll over her.
The immediate memory that came to her was not what she would have thought. She stared at the tree, faintly seeing the ghost of Inuyasha pinned by Kikyo’s arrow. The whole scene played out before her, each memory leading to another. Her journey became a patchwork in her mind, spinning quickly through like a movie.
Her mind suddenly stopped on its original thought and it sent Kagome’s mind reeling. She could hear everything, see everything. She felt a shiver as the wind passed over her again and it was if she faintly could smell everything too. Her fingertips tingled with the intensity of the recollection. It was if someone poured water on her mind, washing away the dusty grey and soaking her in vibrant color once more. The memory seemed to flash, working its way in reverse, almost rewinding itself to replay from the beginning.
. . .
Watch out for that cliff. Okay so I am telling you here and I will tell you in the beginning of the next chapter, Chapter 3 is set up a little weird, it can be confusing. It's a memory, so it's got some holes and time skips. Sorry, but last I knew, no one remebers everything perfectly, just the important parts.
