To heal the broken soul
Chapter two- The demon’s curse
Both of the figures in the clearing froze as the wail pierced the air, slowly dieing down into a deep silence.
Kagome recovered from her shock and glanced up at Kouga, noticing that his grip on her had lessened considerably. ‘Now’s my chance to escape this lunatic…’ Without hesitating she ripped her body free from it’s position pressed close to his and dashed off in the direction of the castle, thinking that whatever was in there was probably much better than what she was leaving behind. Oh how wrong she was…
Kouga looked up startled as the woman he had intended to make his own wrenched herself from his grasp and began running towards the castle, where that eerie sound had come from. He came to his senses and began to chase after the girl, “Kagome! Come back here!! You could get hurt!!” he shouted desperately as he struggled to catch up to her, as she swiftly dashed around the lake.
She looked back over her shoulder at the pursuing man and forced herself to run faster, ignoring the urge to shout insults at him over her shoulder. She had to stay focused on her task, escaping him! Her breath began to come in ragged gasps as she dodged the many rocks that littered the shore of the lake. Without stopping she jumped a particularly large boulder, finally reaching the end of the shore and the homestretch to the large doors of the castle. She only hoped that there was someone there that would help her…
Kouga watched helplessly as his intended put on a new burst of speed and increased the distance between them. His paced slowed as she came closer to the doors that led to the interior of the dark castle. She was too far away, he’d never reach her before she made it to the entrance. The man finally stopped, bending over with hands on knees he gasped to regain his breath. She was lost to him now, he had scared her away and there was no way she was going to come back to him… Giving the girl one last look he turned and began to make his way back around the lake shore, a plot already hatching to deceive the villagers and Kagome’s mother into believing that she had disappeared…
Kagome made her way up the flight of crumbling stone stairs, ignorant to the fact that the castle looked like it hadn’t been occupied for years. Without risking a glance over her shoulder at her pursuer she began to pound on the gate, screaming for someone to help her. “Oh dear God please someone open up!!!” she wailed, tears of fear and frustration beginning to leak from her eyes. After what seemed like an eternity to the frightened girl, the large doors began to creak open….
~*~*~*~*~*~*
The sounds of a girl’s voice reached the young boy’s ears as he laid curled up on the remains of his bed, unmoving. The triangular ears twitched forwards as her wails for help became softer as the sobs began to overtake the screaming. Then the sound of a much older voice spoke, seeming to usher the girl inside. Wait…Inside?! Inuyasha bolted up into a sitting position, his ears straining for what the woman was saying. ‘Kaede you idiot!!’ his mind screamed as he recognized the older women’s voice. A low growl rose in his throat, and he didn’t attempt to stop the demon within showing it’s anger. ‘What is she thinking bringing someone in here now!!’
~*~*~*~*~*~*
Kagome gasped as the doors opened to reveal an aged old woman. Her gray eyes stared at the girl in wonder as she looked around. “What be wrong young lady, and why ye be pounding on the gates of an abandoned castle such as this?”
The girl almost collapsed from relief, she was saved! “Please you have to help me, there’s a man out there who is chasing me, trying to take me!” she cried shivering at the very prospect.
The woman’s eyes widened and she quickly looked behind her, “hurry up child, ye shall be safe in here.” she murmured standing aside as Kagome slipped past her into the castles courtyard, hearing the gate close behind her with a heavy thud. She looked around to the old woman, a grateful look in her eyes. “Thank you so much umm…”
“Kaede,” the woman replied as she turned to the young girl. “But ye best save your thanks child, I’ve most likely only put you into worse danger.”
Kagome made a confused expression, “But what could be more dangerous than that man?” she asked inquiring to Kouga. She shook her head and shivered, “I think that I’d rather face any other danger than him…” she murmured
Kaede gave her a pitying look. “I’m not sure what fate brought you here, but I hope that it will be better than what I foresee….” she motioned for the girl to follow her, “come child, you must be weary after your ordeal, we shall give you some food and drink before I send you on your way.” She gave the raven-haired girl a weak smile. ‘ I just hope she and the young master don’t encounter one another… His temper might not allow her to leave…’
Kagome nodded, grateful to the older woman’s strange kindness and trailed after her as she led the way to the interior of the castle. She let her gaze wander over the courtyard, speculating that the place must have once been a beautiful and luxurious home, wondering what sort of mishap had fallen to make the place look so desolate. The courtyard looked like it might have once been a garden, with lovely plants and waterfalls spreading out along it. But that was all gone now and all that was left were scraggly weeds, dried up streams and broken statues. ‘The statues remind me of broken dreams…’ she thought sadly. The air around her held such a lonely and sad atmosphere that she instinctively shivered.
Kaede led the way to the twin wooden doors, both decorated with intricate carvings and patterns resembling a forest scene. She opened them with only a small amount of difficulty and allowed Kagome to make her way inside before closing them with a soft thud. “Follow me.” she said quietly, leading the girl down a side corridor.
Kagome followed obediently, though not trying to hide her amazement at the richness of the castle’s interior, despite even the disrepair and gloomy setting. Tapestries hung from the walls, even through the dust, the bright and once cheerful colors shone, reminding that once this place had been a place of happiness.
Kaede stopped in front of one of the doors in the corridor and opened it, revealing large yet tidily kept kitchen. She went inside, motioning for Kagome to follow, which the girl did eagerly. She was directed to a small table in the corner of the kitchen while Kaede busied herself with making a kettle of tea and some small tidbits for the girl to eat. She set a small cup of tea and plate of tiny biscuits in front of the girl with a small smile at the girl’s obvious pleasure at the sight of food. She sat in front of the girl as she devoured the biscuits in seconds.
Kagome suddenly remembered her manners and gave a small cough of embarrassment her face showing a small blush. “Umm…excuse me…” she mumbled fidgeting with the hem of her simple kimono sleeve. She picked up the cup of tea, and this time remembering her manners, took a small sip, before setting it back down on the table. She noticed Kaede’s small smile and gave her one of her own. “Please forgive my rudeness, I haven’t even introduced myself.” she said quietly, “My name is Higurashi Kagome, I am the grand-daughter of the Higure Village’s priest. I thank you for rescuing me from that man.”
Kaede smiled. “I’m am very pleased to meet you Kagome. As I have said my name is Kaede, Niwa Kaede.” she paused, “If ye don’t mind my asking child, what were you and the young man doing so far away from any villages?”
Kagome fought back a shudder, “that man was intending to rape me.” she said bluntly. “He bound me with a spell and forced me to follow him out here.”
Kaede gave the girl a sympathetic smile. “It’s a good thing that you escaped.”
Kagome nodded. “He’d been trying to court me lately but I kept refusing, it’s hard to believe that he’d go that far just to claim me… And he used to be such a sweet and kind person…”
The older woman reached out a gnarled hand and placed it on the girls smooth and pale one. “It’s okay child, I’m sure that somewhere down deep he’s still himself.” Little did the woman know that she was unconsciously voicing her thoughts on another’s pain.
The girl gave her a small smile. “Thank you for your kindness Kaede. But I think I best be going now, I don’t want to intrude and my mother will be worried.”
The woman nodded and stood up. “I’ll take you to the door and see you off young one.”
Kagome nodded her thanks and followed her out and down the corridor, back the way they had come. She stopped as they reached the door. “Good luck Kagome.”
Suddenly a harsh voice spoke from behind the pair. “Kaede what the Hell do you think your doing?”
Kagome froze, ‘there’s another person here?’ she turned slowly and her eyes met an angry golden stare, she gasped.
There before her stood the most gorgeous boy she had ever seen. His long silver hair flowed to his waist, contrasting sharply against his red hakama and matching haori. His hands were hidden by the flowing sleeves of the haori and the golden eyes glared at her. “Well?”
Kaede let out a nervous noise. “Please forgive me master, she was being attacked and I couldn’t turn her away. I was just about to see her away.”
The boy scowled, “Kaede, you of all people should know that by now, no one’s to enter the castle!!” he shouted, making Kagome squeak in fright of his angry tone. He turned his glare on the girl, who cowered. “What the hell are you doing here wench?”
Kagome started at the rude name, and instantly her better judgment fled as her unruly temper flared. No one insulted her and got away unscathed. “Just who are you calling wench?!”
The boy seemed taken back, but quickly recovered, something flashed in his golden eyes and Kagome immediately regretted her absurd actions. ‘Oops…nice one, piss off the guy why don’t you?’
A low growl escaped his throat and he took a step forward, eyes flashing. “Stupid girl.”
Kagome automatically took a step back, recognizing the danger in the boy’s eyes and voice. She saw his eyes speck with red and suddenly understood. ‘He’s a demon…’ Without thinking she spun around and wrenched open the door, dashing out into the courtyard.
The boy snarled and sped after her, his thoughts blind to Kaede’s pleas to leave the girl alone.
She heard the footfalls of the demon boy and tried to put on a new burst of speed, but as she did she lost her footing, crashing to the ground in a small heap. She tried to pull herself up but was forced back down by a clawed hand on her neck. Kagome found herself staring up into gold and red speckled eyes. She screamed, but it only resulted in the pressure on her windpipe increasing. “Please…” she cried, squeezing her eyes shut. Suddenly the pressure on her throat lessened, and the sound of whimpering reached her ears. Opening her eyes she saw that the boy was looking at her in horror, the red had disappeared from his eye’s completely.
Jumping back he stared at the girl in a mixture of horror and sadness. What had he done? He remembered getting angry at Kaede for letting someone in the castle and yelling at the girl, when she had yelled back it had seemed that the demon inside him had broken loose… “Oh God…” he whispered.
Kagome stared at him, her vision going blurry, what was going on with this place…. She felt her head getting light and realized that she was going to faint… ‘Mom…’
The world went dark as her eyes slipped shut and she fell back onto the cold stone.
