Chapter 3 : Clinging to his humanity
Fuzzy darkness surrounded her senses. ‘So nice and comfortable though’ she thought as she snuggled deeper into the warmth, surprised that it was slightly hard. The deep blackness drifted over her again and she fell back into a world of nothingness.
~*~*~*
“You know that she can’t leave now.” The slightly harsh male voice jarred the blanket that surrounded Kagome.
“But Inuyasha, you can’t really expect to keep her here do you?” The calm yet harried voice of Kaede joined the conversation.
Kagome finally came fully awake, though she kept her eyes closed; wanting to listen in on the conversation.
The owner of the male’s voice snorted, “you should of thought of that before you let that wench in, Kaede.”
“Would you have rather had an innocent girl raped right outside your gates , Inuyasha?”
Silence…. Then a soft “Feh….whatever but she still can’t leave now, she’s seen to much.”
“Inuyasha have pity on…”
A sharp growl cut through the elderly woman’s plea. “Enough. I’ve spoken, she will not leave the castle.” With that Kagome heard an angry rustle of clothing before a door slammed shut; signaling that the boy called Inuyasha had left.”
Cautiously she cracked open an eye. Seeing that there was no sign of any weird demons running around the room, she allowed herself to open both eyes and sit up on the bed; that had somehow mysteriously replaced the harder warmth that she had been enclosed in moments before. She glanced around and saw that she had been placed in a slightly homey bedchamber, despite the fact that most of the items; not counting the bed; were covered in dusty white sheets. Her wandering gaze soon landed on the hunched over woman in the middle of the room.
Kaede smiled when she noticed that Kagome was awake. “How do ye feel child?” she asked gently.
Kagome looked around again, slightly dazed. “I-I’m feeling fine… I think…” she gave Kaede a confused look, “but what am I doing here? All I remember is passing out after a….” she stopped.
Kaede’s expression took on a slightly pained look. “Ye passed out after lord Inuyasha chased you….” she murmured, sitting down on the corner of the bed by Kagome. “ He brought you up here afterwards.”
‘Inuyasha? But wasn’t that the boy who…’ Kagome shook her head. “Is…is Inuyasha the lord of the castle?” she asked, the red flecked golden eyes surfacing in her minds eye.
Kaede nodded. “He is…he ordered that this room be prepared for ye.” she gave the girl a sad look. “You are to stay at the castle.”
“What!!!” Kagome turned fear filled eyes on the old woman. “What do you mean I have to stay here!!??” she cried.
Kaede sighed, “I wish that it weren’t so Kagome-chan, it’s not that I don’t enjoy your company but… I do not want to see ye get hurt. This castle has been under a curse for many years now.” She lifted tired eyes to the girl’s deep brown ones. “I don’t want anyone else to suffer as all of us here have.”
Kagome was silent. What did the old woman mean? The castle was under a curse? But how and why? So many questions popped up in the already confused girl’s head; and it was beginning to give her a headache. She sighed and rubbed her temples; pushing the annoying voices to the back of her mind. She looked at her friend. “But what about my family? What am I supposed to do? Just let the whole village think that I’m dead?” The girl’s voice was starting to take on an angry note.
Kaede sighed again taking note on the girl’s obvious displeasure. “I’m very sorry Kagome, but the young lord has spoken… I-I cannot go against his wishes… Believe me, if there was anything that I could do to help ye get back home, I would do it gladly.”
Kagome gave the woman a soft smile. “It’s okay Kaede-san, I know that you tried to.” The older woman gave her a startled look and she smiled sheepishly, “I heard you and him talking.”
Kaede gave a short chuckle. “I’m surprised that you didn’t get caught by the young lord Kagome-chan.” She smiled. “Since your going to be living here we better get you aquainted right?”
Kagome started. “Eh? There are more people here?”
“Of course! Do you think that an old lady like myself would be able to care for such a huge castle all alone?!”
Kagome shook her head, fighting back the sort laugh that threatened to escape her lips. “No, no of course not Kaede-san. It’s just that I didn’t see anyone else here.”
Kaede nodded, “that’s because ye have only seen a tiny portion of this castle. Come, I will show you some more on our way to the training halls. Miroku and Sango will be happy to have some company.” She motioned for the raven haired girl to get up out of the bed and follow her out the door.

He paced the confinements of his tattered room. Back, and forth, then back again. His silver mane waved in the rush of air he created in his passings. Why? Why had that woman let the girl enter? Why? When he had given strict order for no one to ever enter the castle again after the woman’s two helpers.
Inuyasha gave a growl of annoyance as he finally ceased his seemingly endless pacing and flopped down on the feeble remains of the bed. He sighed and rubbed a clawed hand across his tired eyes. It didn’t help matters any that the new wench looked so much like the woman who had cursed him to this painful existence. A low snarl rose in his throat. No! He would not dwell on the past! He had sworn never again to think of her. ‘Kikyo…’ The name rose in his mind as if on cue. His eyes snapped open as her face appeared before his closed lids. “Damnit…” he hissed. The pools of liquid gold hardned into stone. “Why the hell did you betray me you arrogant woman?”
“Jewel of Soul’s shall bind your fate
Until the light shall fade
From the darkness I create
A soul frozen in time
Slowly sinking deeper into misery”
The words echoed in his head. An endless reminder of what he had become and what he was fated to be for the rest of eternity….
“Only one who sheds her tears
Who lays her aside her fears
To heal the heart that I have ravaged
The injured shall be saved
A love for time will be made.”
“ who lays aside her fears…” His voice repeated the words that had burned themselves deeply into his memory. He stood up and padded silently out of the room. Maybe there would be some answers for him now….

Kagome was still in awe at the castles luxurious array of items. Tapestries hung from almost every wall and hallway that the two women had passed through and various decorations adorned the rooms.
Kaede had led the dumbstruck girl thoughout her new home and finally stopped at a double door way. The doors were much like the entrance’s; Heavy oak had been used and patterns were carved into the foundation of the wood. But unlike the entrance doorway the patterns were much more simple.
“This is the training hall.” Kaede spoke up as she pushed open the doors.
“YOU DAMN LECHEROUS MONK!!!!!”
The angry voice reverbrated in Kagome’s eardrums as the doors swung open to reveal two people in the middle of the large room. One was a young girl around Kagome’s own age. Her dark brown hair was swinging wildly in it’s ponytail, bright violet eyes flashing. She was standing over a fallen boy with a large boomerang like weapon hefted over her head and was ready to bring it down on the unfortunate boy’s head.
The boy waved his hands frantically. “W-wait Sango my darling!! There’s no need to get so violent now is there?” His question was met with the sound of the giant weapon smashing into the floor inches from his head. He flinched visibly, looking from the weapon to the angry girl above him with medium violet colored eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief even in his precarious position.
A low sigh escaped Kaede’s lips as she surveyed the scene before her. “And here I thought that you might have learned that my grandaughter has a very short temper, Miroku.”
The black haired boy named Miroku turned his attention from the fuming girl above him, to the two women who were standing in the doorway. The younger girl was giving both of them a confused look while trying to cover up her laughter. The boy smiled, “ahh Kaede-sama!” He exclaimed, making the girl turn her head to look at the newcomers.
“Grandmother?” The dark-haired girl quickly pulled her weapon from the floor beside Miroku’s head and offered the older woman a small bow. “Sorry you had to see that grandmother.” she mumbled while shooting the monk dark looks. Suddenly Kagome caught her attention and the bright violet eyes widned.”Who are you!!” She blurted out before she even thought.
Kagome took a small step back, wary of the giant boomerang that was for the time being slung over the girl’s shoulder. “I-um I….”
Kaede held up a hand to the brown haired girl, signaling that it was okay. “Sango, this is Higurashi, Kagome. She is to be staying at the castle on Lord Inuyasha’s order. Kagome, this is Niwa, Sango; my grandaughter. The monk that is splayed out on the floor is Itazura, Miroku; Sango’s friend.” The older woman explained calmly.
Kagome gave a small bow. “ I am pleased to meet both of you.”
Miroku had finally clambered to his feet and both he and Sango returned Kagome’s greeting. “The pleasure is ours Kagome-sama.” Miroku said winking at the girl as he rose.
Sango, who had caught the wink; smartly slapped him upside the head while hissing, “Don’t even try your stupid tricks on the poor girl you perverted houshi!”
Kagome raised a slender eyebrow at the two’s interaction and made a mental note to ask them ;when she knew them better; if they were a couple.
Kaede coughed lightly getting the two arguing teenagers attention. “If ye will all excuse me I will be taking my leave for now. Kagome-chan’s bedchambers need to be prepared as does dinner. So I will leave her here in your care Sango, if that is acceptable to you?”
Sango nodded and gave Kagome a reassuring smile. “Of couse grandmother.” She shot Miroku a venomous look. “I’ll make sure that the lech keeps his hands off as well.”
Miroku mustered up the most innocent smile he could and flashed it at the dark-haired girl. “Im hurt that you would even consider a holy man of Budda himself to have such dark and unholy thoughts, Sango.”
Sango just snorted in an unladylike fashion and mader her way over to Kagome and Kaede. “Don’t worry Grandma, you go and do what you intended. I’ll make sure that Kagome is comfortable.”
Kaede nodded and retreated through the doors, leaving Kagome with two perfect strangers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inuyasha made his way up the dark, winding, stone steps. There was no light in the clammy climbing corridor but his glowing golden eyes seemed to peirce through the heavy darkness with practiced ease. A small wooden door appeared above him and in a few moments he was standing in front of the locked entrance. The glowing orbs narrowed as he placed a clawed hand on the single carving in the middle of the wood tracing the circular pattern with one of the delicate looking claws. A soft rumbling sound filled the silence and slowly the locks that were holding the door closed clicked open.
His face neutral, Inuyasha pushed the door open and stepped inside the circular room. One lone medium sized window was placed across from the door, offering only a small amount of colored light that spilled through the stained glass. The only furniture in the room was a small round table sitting in the middle of the room. It was on top of this table that a glowing multi-colored orb rested, suspended by an ornate string of white stones on a display. The orb glowed with an earthreal light of darkened shades of pink and purple, a low humming of power filled the space of the room. The only other object on the table was a small mirror that rested face down beside the jewel. It’s ivory handle reflected the jewels dark light and glittered with the fauceted colors.
The silver haired boy felt something tug inside of him and he bit back a whimper. His damned demoic nature was once again trying to break through. Ignoring the sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach, Inuyasha made his way to the table and stared at the jewel. Memories began to resurface in his mind, but he quickly dispersed them and turned his attention to the mirror.
Flashback:
The woman stood over the writhing boy on the marble floors, a dark look on her face as she finished her chanting. Her cold blue eyes hardned to stone as she watched the black-haired boy’s body arch in agony. “My poor Inuyasha…” she murmered, her voice as cold as her eyes. “This is what you get for you betrayal of me.”
Suddenly the icy eyes softned a little and she withdrew a small ivory mirror. Running her hands over the clear surface she muttered yet another incantation. The mirror’s surface darkned to a pitch black, then it reflected the boy’s face. The woman turned back to the now unconscious Inuyasha. “I will have pity on your soul Inuyasha. If you can find someone who will love you before the jewel I have sealed your curse in fades to nothing; you and all of your household shall be free of my spell.” She laid the mirror beside the spasaming boy. “This mirror shall show you anything that you wish to see or know about your fate.” She placed a hand on his sweating forehead and stroked it softly, “I pity you…poor foolish boy…” With those last words she disappeared into the shadows of the castle…
End Flashback.
Inuyasha shook his head to rid himself of the painful memory. Kikyo had betrayed him! She had betrayed him for no reason… Something inside the cursed boy ached and he realized that it wasn’t his demoic side trying to break through… He had been in love with the woman and now his spirit and heart were broken because of what she had done! He sighed and walked over to the window, seating himself on the ledge beneath it. He stared out the colored glass with dulled eyes as the painful memory replayed itself in his head; as it had done so many times before…
Kagome sat comfortably on the wooden bench to the side of the practice mat; an amused smile on her delicate features. For the past half-hour she had been watching Miroku help Sango on her fighting skills.
The dark-haired girl had explained to Kagome that she had come from a long line of demon slayers. Her village had sent her to look for her grandmother after the woman had disappeared for over fifty-years.
It had struck the younger girl as odd that the village would wait fifty-years to go looking for it’s head priestess, but Sango had told her that they had received a message from the older woman.
Miroku had met up with Sango half-way thorugh her journey to the castle and had inevitably tagged along, seeming to have taken a liking to the beautiful yet dangerous slayer. He had been a traveling monk in search of work when he had stumbled upon the girl’s camp and made himself comfortable. Despite the fact that the man was a total lech, the two of them had become good friends in their travels.
Smack!! “Damn it Miroku! I told you to keep your hands to yourself!” Kagome flinched as she watched the angry girl chase the unfortunate monk around the room; her giant boomerang, that she had faitfully called Hirakotsu, swinging wildly at the fleeing man. The raven-haired girl stifled a chuckle at the two friend’s antics.
They had arrived at the castle not long before her, and as such, had met the same fate of being confined to staying at the castle. But neither of them seemed to mind it that much. Although Sango did miss her brother and father, she wasn’t that homesick. As for Miroku, he had been a wander and had no home, so he was just fine with staying in such a luxurious place; no matter how run down it was.
Sango had readily excepted Kagome as a friend, and Miroku… well maybe he had excepted her to readily. (Greeting her with a so called “possessed hand” on her bottom.) Then again, this little introduction had only earned him a sound beating by a thoughly ticked off slayer.
Sango finally caught Miroku; giving him a good pounding; and came to sit down beside Kagome. She gave the younger girl a smile. "So Kagome-chan... " she paused not sure of how to bring up the topic of how Kagome had come to be trapped here.
Noticing Sango's hesitance Kagome helped her out. "Your wanting to know how I got to be stuck here aren't you?"
Nod.
Kagome sighed. "There was this man in my village named Kouga who was courting me. I was always refusing him so I guess he finally got fed up with it and placed a spell on me to make it so I had to follow him into the forest surrounding our tiny village. We rode for most of the day and he finally brought me to the clearing on the otherside of the lake. He was intending to rape me to make me "his woman" as he put it, but some sort of noise startled him and I made my escape to the castle..." She trailed off, trying to figure out how to describe her meeting of the young master of the castle, Inuyasha.
Sango spoke for her. "Inuyasha found out you were here and refused to let grandma Kaede to let you go home to your village right?"
Kagome nodded remembering the young boy who had chased her. The familar red-flecked golden eyes came to mind, but were replaced by the look of fear that had overtaken the silver-haired demon when he had seen what he was doing. 'Why did he look so distressed? I was so sure that he wanted to kill me...'
"Kagome? Hey Kagome?!"
Jerking herself out of her musings she looked up at Sango with a sheepish smile. "Sorry... Kinda got caught up in my thoughts I guess."
Sango just shook her head and grinned at the girl. "It's time for us to go to the kitchen for dinner." She stood up and went over to the unconsciouss monk on the floor, poking him with the toe of her felt boots. "Wake up houshi, dinner will go cold if you don't hurry up!"
Almost automatically the supposedly uncouscoious monk jumped up at the mention of food and bowed low to the two exasperated women. "Lead the way to the dinner table ladies!"
Kagome and Sango looked at each other and rolled their eyes heavenwards. "Oh brother..." the muttered before starting for the kitchen.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Inuyasha was jolted out of his thoughts by the now all-to-familar pain in his chest. A clawed hand came up to clutch the area of burning as he stood from his roost and made his way back to the table. 'Might as well get this over with before I can't get back downstairs...' He thought bitterly. He loosened his grip on the pained area and lifted the ivory mirror up. Looking into it's pitch-black depths he gathered his courage.
"What is my fate?" His voice was a barley detectable whisper.
The mirror stayed blank for a moment, then suddenly, the inky surface began to swirl and spin. Finally the surface cleared and showed the demon's face as it was; pale and drawn. The golden eyes lacking luster and spirit. His two fluffy dog-ears drooped with the daily toil of batteling his inner nature. Suddenly the image shifted, showing the same face... only... human. Gone were the demonic ears and golden eyes, replaced by normal human ears on the side of his face and twin pools of deep violet. His hair was black and his skin slightly darker, though pale in comparison to other's skin. The mirror's reflected eyes widned as the picture stilled. Inuyasha was at a loss for words, it had been fifty years since he had actually seen what he had once looked like as a human.
He quickly placed the mirror back in it's original position, still unable to believe what he had seen. Did it mean that there was a slight chance that he might be freed from the tourture of his existance? Did it mean that he might actually find peace? His wonderings were cut short as the pain shot through him again, but this time more intense. "D-damn it..." he cursed as he quickly made his way to the door. Opening it he dissapeared down the stairs, the doorway closing behind him with a soft thud.
He made it to his room just as the pain became unbearable and he collapsed in a heap on the floor as the urges began to taunt him. He squeezed his eyes shut as wave after wave of agony washed over him in tides. Gathering the remainder of his physical streangth he weakly pulled himself up onto his bed and curled into the fetal positon; knees tucked up to his chin, hands curled into tight fists.
At that very moment he wished that he could just die, so hard was it to resist the urges to let go and allow his cursed nature to take over. Yet he couldn't, he was cursed to live for an eternity in this same agony if he failed to break the spell. The voices began to whisper in his ears again, promises of relief from the constant pain and misery. But he choose to ignore them, he wouldn't give up the remainder of his human soul so easily. What small amount of humainity he had left in him, he intended to keep!
He kept those thoughts in his head as the feeling of being ripped apart bit by bit from the inside out became more intense and he let out a long howl of pain...
======================================
Kagom e jumped as the sound reached her ears. She was sitting at the small table in the corner of the kitchen, just like she had done with Kaede not but a day ago. The only difference was that Sango and Miroku now joined them. She looked from the drawn face of Kaede to the worried faces of her two new friends.
"Umm... W-what was that?"
Kaede and the others exchanged glances. "That was Inuyasha..." Sango murmured quietly as she turned to her friend.
‘Inuyasha? Do they mean the demon?’ Kagome glanced over to Kaede. “W-what’s wrong?”
Kaede sighed, “the young master has not been well for many years now. He suffers terribly daily from pains.” The woman lied.
Kagome’s brow furrowed. “And you haven’t given him anything to ease his pain?” She asked, a thought forming in her head.
Kaede shook her head. “Unfortunately there is no one in the castle who has knowledge of healing. I have done the best that my training can, but to no avail.”
The raven-haired girl clapped her hands together. “Well now that won’t do will it?” She grinned at the confused table-mates. “I was born and raised a shrine priestess, so I know all there is to know about healing and pain-relief!” Standing up the now fully motivated girl marched over to the still boiling tea-kettle and pored a steaming cup of water. She turned to the silent Kaede. “Where do you keep your herbs and medicine Kaede-sama?”
The older woman gave her a confused look. “In the third cabinet beside the cutting board. Why?”
Kagome smirked. “I’m going to give this so called lord a pain-killer so he can rest at ease.” She winked cheerily at the dumbfounded group. “Don’t worry! I know what I’m doing, I used to have to do this all the time back at my village.” She continued to dig through the cupboard until she found the herbs that she needed, taking the amounts she required she put them all into the cup of steaming water and stirred the concoction until the antidote was colored a dark green color. She looked around the kitchen. “Now where in the world is some honey...”
Miroku recovered from his stupor first and quickly tried to discourage the girl. “No Kagome-sama! I advise you not to go to Inuyasha when he is in such a state!”
Sango followed with her own pleas, “Kagome listen to Miroku. He’s right, Inuyasha would become angry!”
“Wait Miroku, Sango.” Kaede spoke up. She turned to the girl. “We have no honey here at the moment. But take your potion up to Inuyasha if ye wish to, but I advise ye to take care not to anger him so... I don’t believe that he will hurt you but take caution anyways.”
Kagome looked from one face to another, just as another wail of pain was heard throughout the building. She nodded and left the room.
Sango turned a shocked expression to her grandmother. “Grandmother are you mad!? Does the girl even know about Inuyasha’s and the rest of this place’s curse?! He’ll surely kill her in the state that he’s in!!”
Miroku opened his mouth to agree, but was cut off by Kaede. “Inuyasha attacked her once before, but he stopped before he did any real harm. I highly doubt that he will harm the girl.” She smiled. “ I believe that we may have found the cure for his misery, that is why I let the girl go to him. Usually he would have just killed any other trespasser on his estate, but he spared the girl’s life. Not to mention that he was the one who took her to the spare bedchamber...”
Miroku gave Kaede a semi-shocked look. “Do you mean to tell me that our stubborn, arrogant, and hot-headed friend actually carried Kagome-sama up to her room on his own accord? And he didn’t kill her?”
Kaede nodded and took a sip of her tea. “I think that he sensed something in our new house-guest...”
>>>>>>>>>> ;>>>>>>>>>>>.
Kagome stood in front of the door to Inuyasha’s chambers, the cup of potion held in her hands. The sounds had ceased and it sounded like everything was quiet inside. She took a shaky breath, all of her earlier courage had disappeared as soon as she had set foot outside the warmth of the kitchen. Did she really think that her plan would work? That this lord would let her go if she showed him kindness? She sighed and shook her head. ‘Kagome Higurashi, you really are an idiot aren’t you? First off you let yourself be kidnapped by some crazed man, then you get yourself into a worse mess, tangling with some demon lord. Now you actually think that he’ll let you go?’
The girl smacked herself on the head. “Great...” she muttered. “Now I have little voices in my head telling me I’m an idiot.” Suddenly a soft whimper caught her attention. ‘Was that him?’ She thought with a small amount surprise. ‘I can’t believe that he’d sound so..., so lonely...’ She smiled softly, “maybe he just needs a friend?” she whispered to herself as she felt her courage return. Pushing on the door lightly she found that it was unlocked. Putting more pressure on it she let the momentum open the heavy oak door enough for her to get in.
Kagome peeked hesitantly into the room, seeing only a tattered bed and torn tapestries that blew in the breeze that came from the shattered window. She shivered, then she noticed the curled up form on the far edge of the bed. Silver hair was spread in a disheveled mess around the boy. His face was turned towards her, and she could see that his expression was a pained one. Suddenly something on top of the boy’s head twitched and Kagome had to force herself not to gasp at what she saw. Two furry triangular ears were perched on top of the silver-mane of hair, swiveling in his unconsciousness.
Slowly the girl stepped to the side of the bed, not sure what to do now that she was in the same room as her “captor”. Setting the cup of tea on the floor she kneeled beside the remains of the bed and looked into Inuyasha’s face. She noticed how unusually pale his complexion was, as if he hadn’t been well in ages. His breathing was slightly ragged and his body rose and fell with jerky motions.
A strange feeling welled up within the young girls soul and she found her hand reaching out to touch the pale, yet sweaty brow of the demon before her. Just as her fingertips brushed the edges of his silky silver-bangs, a soft moan escaped the boy’s chapped lips. Suddenly his eyes snapped open and she found herself staring into deep pools of liquid gold.
Giving a squeak of surprise Kagome tried to withdraw her hand, only to feel the strong grip of another’s close over her slender wrist. Inuyasha was sitting up in an instant, his golden orbs scowling at the human girl before him. “What the fuck are you doing here wench?!”
It is really fluffy in some parts and also has just the right amount of drama added in.
Chapter 3 : Clinging to his humanity
Fuzzy darkness surrounded her senses. ‘So nice and comfortable though’ she thought as she snuggled deeper into the warmth, surprised that it was slightly hard. The deep blackness drifted over her again and she fell back into a world of nothingness.
A sharp growl cut through the elderly woman’s plea. “Enough. I’ve spoken, she will not leave the castle.” With that Kagome heard an angry rustle of clothing before a door slammed shut; signaling that the boy called Inuyasha had left.”
Cautiously she cracked open an eye. Seeing that there was no sign of any weird demons running around the room, she allowed herself to open both eyes and sit up on the bed; that had somehow mysteriously replaced the harder warmth that she had been enclosed in moments before. She glanced around and saw that she had been placed in a slightly homey bedchamber, despite the fact that most of the items; not counting the bed; were covered in dusty white sheets. Her wandering gaze soon landed on the hunched over woman in the middle of the room.
Kaede smiled when she noticed that Kagome was awake. “How do ye feel child?” she asked gently.
Kagome looked around again, slightly dazed. “I-I’m feeling fine… I think…” she gave Kaede a confused look, “but what am I doing here? All I remember is passing out after a….” she stopped.
Kaede’s expression took on a slightly pained look. “Ye passed out after lord Inuyasha chased you….” she murmured, sitting down on the corner of the bed by Kagome. “ He brought you up here afterwards.”
‘Inuyasha? But wasn’t that the boy who…’ Kagome shook her head. “Is…is Inuyasha the lord of the castle?” she asked, the red flecked golden eyes surfacing in her minds eye.
Kaede nodded. “He is…he ordered that this room be prepared for ye.” she gave the girl a sad look. “You are to stay at the castle.”
“What!!!” Kagome turned fear filled eyes on the old woman. “What do you mean I have to stay here!!??” she cried.
Kaede sighed, “I wish that it weren’t so Kagome-chan, it’s not that I don’t enjoy your company but… I do not want to see ye get hurt. This castle has been under a curse for many years now.” She lifted tired eyes to the girl’s deep brown ones. “I don’t want anyone else to suffer as all of us here have.”
Kagome was silent. What did the old woman mean? The castle was under a curse? But how and why? So many questions popped up in the already confused girl’s head; and it was beginning to give her a headache. She sighed and rubbed her temples; pushing the annoying voices to the back of her mind. She looked at her friend. “But what about my family? What am I supposed to do? Just let the whole village think that I’m dead?” The girl’s voice was starting to take on an angry note.
Kaede sighed again taking note on the girl’s obvious displeasure. “I’m very sorry Kagome, but the young lord has spoken… I-I cannot go against his wishes… Believe me, if there was anything that I could do to help ye get back home, I would do it gladly.”
Kagome gave the woman a soft smile. “It’s okay Kaede-san, I know that you tried to.” The older woman gave her a startled look and she smiled sheepishly, “I heard you and him talking.”
Kaede gave a short chuckle. “I’m surprised that you didn’t get caught by the young lord Kagome-chan.” She smiled. “Since your going to be living here we better get you aquainted right?”
Kagome started. “Eh? There are more people here?”
“Of course! Do you think that an old lady like myself would be able to care for such a huge castle all alone?!”
Kagome shook her head, fighting back the sort laugh that threatened to escape her lips. “No, no of course not Kaede-san. It’s just that I didn’t see anyone else here.”
Kaede nodded, “that’s because ye have only seen a tiny portion of this castle. Come, I will show you some more on our way to the training halls. Miroku and Sango will be happy to have some company.” She motioned for the raven haired girl to get up out of the bed and follow her out the door.
He paced the confinements of his tattered room. Back, and forth, then back again. His silver mane waved in the rush of air he created in his passings. Why? Why had that woman let the girl enter? Why? When he had given strict order for no one to ever enter the castle again after the woman’s two helpers.
Inuyasha gave a growl of annoyance as he finally ceased his seemingly endless pacing and flopped down on the feeble remains of the bed. He sighed and rubbed a clawed hand across his tired eyes. It didn’t help matters any that the new wench looked so much like the woman who had cursed him to this painful existence. A low snarl rose in his throat. No! He would not dwell on the past! He had sworn never again to think of her. ‘Kikyo…’ The name rose in his mind as if on cue. His eyes snapped open as her face appeared before his closed lids. “Damnit…” he hissed. The pools of liquid gold hardned into stone. “Why the hell did you betray me you arrogant woman?”
“Jewel of Soul’s shall bind your fate
Until the light shall fade
From the darkness I create
A soul frozen in time
Slowly sinking deeper into misery”
The words echoed in his head. An endless reminder of what he had become and what he was fated to be for the rest of eternity….
“Only one who sheds her tears
Who lays her aside her fears
To heal the heart that I have ravaged
The injured shall be saved
A love for time will be made.”
“ who lays aside her fears…” His voice repeated the words that had burned themselves deeply into his memory. He stood up and padded silently out of the room. Maybe there would be some answers for him now….
Kagome was still in awe at the castles luxurious array of items. Tapestries hung from almost every wall and hallway that the two women had passed through and various decorations adorned the rooms.
Kaede had led the dumbstruck girl thoughout her new home and finally stopped at a double door way. The doors were much like the entrance’s; Heavy oak had been used and patterns were carved into the foundation of the wood. But unlike the entrance doorway the patterns were much more simple.
“This is the training hall.” Kaede spoke up as she pushed open the doors.
“YOU DAMN LECHEROUS MONK!!!!!”
The angry voice reverbrated in Kagome’s eardrums as the doors swung open to reveal two people in the middle of the large room. One was a young girl around Kagome’s own age. Her dark brown hair was swinging wildly in it’s ponytail, bright violet eyes flashing. She was standing over a fallen boy with a large boomerang like weapon hefted over her head and was ready to bring it down on the unfortunate boy’s head.
The boy waved his hands frantically. “W-wait Sango my darling!! There’s no need to get so violent now is there?” His question was met with the sound of the giant weapon smashing into the floor inches from his head. He flinched visibly, looking from the weapon to the angry girl above him with medium violet colored eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief even in his precarious position.
A low sigh escaped Kaede’s lips as she surveyed the scene before her. “And here I thought that you might have learned that my grandaughter has a very short temper, Miroku.”
The black haired boy named Miroku turned his attention from the fuming girl above him, to the two women who were standing in the doorway. The younger girl was giving both of them a confused look while trying to cover up her laughter. The boy smiled, “ahh Kaede-sama!” He exclaimed, making the girl turn her head to look at the newcomers.
“Grandmother?” The dark-haired girl quickly pulled her weapon from the floor beside Miroku’s head and offered the older woman a small bow. “Sorry you had to see that grandmother.” she mumbled while shooting the monk dark looks. Suddenly Kagome caught her attention and the bright violet eyes widned.”Who are you!!” She blurted out before she even thought.
Kagome took a small step back, wary of the giant boomerang that was for the time being slung over the girl’s shoulder. “I-um I….”
Kaede held up a hand to the brown haired girl, signaling that it was okay. “Sango, this is Higurashi, Kagome. She is to be staying at the castle on Lord Inuyasha’s order. Kagome, this is Niwa, Sango; my grandaughter. The monk that is splayed out on the floor is Itazura, Miroku; Sango’s friend.” The older woman explained calmly.
Kagome gave a small bow. “ I am pleased to meet both of you.”
Miroku had finally clambered to his feet and both he and Sango returned Kagome’s greeting. “The pleasure is ours Kagome-sama.” Miroku said winking at the girl as he rose.
Sango, who had caught the wink; smartly slapped him upside the head while hissing, “Don’t even try your stupid tricks on the poor girl you perverted houshi!”
Kagome raised a slender eyebrow at the two’s interaction and made a mental note to ask them ;when she knew them better; if they were a couple.
Kaede coughed lightly getting the two arguing teenagers attention. “If ye will all excuse me I will be taking my leave for now. Kagome-chan’s bedchambers need to be prepared as does dinner. So I will leave her here in your care Sango, if that is acceptable to you?”
Sango nodded and gave Kagome a reassuring smile. “Of couse grandmother.” She shot Miroku a venomous look. “I’ll make sure that the lech keeps his hands off as well.”
Miroku mustered up the most innocent smile he could and flashed it at the dark-haired girl. “Im hurt that you would even consider a holy man of Budda himself to have such dark and unholy thoughts, Sango.”
Sango just snorted in an unladylike fashion and mader her way over to Kagome and Kaede. “Don’t worry Grandma, you go and do what you intended. I’ll make sure that Kagome is comfortable.”
Kaede nodded and retreated through the doors, leaving Kagome with two perfect strangers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inuyasha made his way up the dark, winding, stone steps. There was no light in the clammy climbing corridor but his glowing golden eyes seemed to peirce through the heavy darkness with practiced ease. A small wooden door appeared above him and in a few moments he was standing in front of the locked entrance. The glowing orbs narrowed as he placed a clawed hand on the single carving in the middle of the wood tracing the circular pattern with one of the delicate looking claws. A soft rumbling sound filled the silence and slowly the locks that were holding the door closed clicked open.
His face neutral, Inuyasha pushed the door open and stepped inside the circular room. One lone medium sized window was placed across from the door, offering only a small amount of colored light that spilled through the stained glass. The only furniture in the room was a small round table sitting in the middle of the room. It was on top of this table that a glowing multi-colored orb rested, suspended by an ornate string of white stones on a display. The orb glowed with an earthreal light of darkened shades of pink and purple, a low humming of power filled the space of the room. The only other object on the table was a small mirror that rested face down beside the jewel. It’s ivory handle reflected the jewels dark light and glittered with the fauceted colors.
The silver haired boy felt something tug inside of him and he bit back a whimper. His damned demoic nature was once again trying to break through. Ignoring the sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach, Inuyasha made his way to the table and stared at the jewel. Memories began to resurface in his mind, but he quickly dispersed them and turned his attention to the mirror.
Flashback:
The woman stood over the writhing boy on the marble floors, a dark look on her face as she finished her chanting. Her cold blue eyes hardned to stone as she watched the black-haired boy’s body arch in agony. “My poor Inuyasha…” she murmered, her voice as cold as her eyes. “This is what you get for you betrayal of me.”
Suddenly the icy eyes softned a little and she withdrew a small ivory mirror. Running her hands over the clear surface she muttered yet another incantation. The mirror’s surface darkned to a pitch black, then it reflected the boy’s face. The woman turned back to the now unconscious Inuyasha. “I will have pity on your soul Inuyasha. If you can find someone who will love you before the jewel I have sealed your curse in fades to nothing; you and all of your household shall be free of my spell.” She laid the mirror beside the spasaming boy. “This mirror shall show you anything that you wish to see or know about your fate.” She placed a hand on his sweating forehead and stroked it softly, “I pity you…poor foolish boy…” With those last words she disappeared into the shadows of the castle…
End Flashback.
Inuyasha shook his head to rid himself of the painful memory. Kikyo had betrayed him! She had betrayed him for no reason… Something inside the cursed boy ached and he realized that it wasn’t his demoic side trying to break through… He had been in love with the woman and now his spirit and heart were broken because of what she had done! He sighed and walked over to the window, seating himself on the ledge beneath it. He stared out the colored glass with dulled eyes as the painful memory replayed itself in his head; as it had done so many times before…

Kagome sat comfortably on the wooden bench to the side of the practice mat; an amused smile on her delicate features. For the past half-hour she had been watching Miroku help Sango on her fighting skills.
The dark-haired girl had explained to Kagome that she had come from a long line of demon slayers. Her village had sent her to look for her grandmother after the woman had disappeared for over fifty-years.
It had struck the younger girl as odd that the village would wait fifty-years to go looking for it’s head priestess, but Sango had told her that they had received a message from the older woman.
Miroku had met up with Sango half-way thorugh her journey to the castle and had inevitably tagged along, seeming to have taken a liking to the beautiful yet dangerous slayer. He had been a traveling monk in search of work when he had stumbled upon the girl’s camp and made himself comfortable. Despite the fact that the man was a total lech, the two of them had become good friends in their travels.
Smack!! “Damn it Miroku! I told you to keep your hands to yourself!” Kagome flinched as she watched the angry girl chase the unfortunate monk around the room; her giant boomerang, that she had faitfully called Hirakotsu, swinging wildly at the fleeing man. The raven-haired girl stifled a chuckle at the two friend’s antics.
They had arrived at the castle not long before her, and as such, had met the same fate of being confined to staying at the castle. But neither of them seemed to mind it that much. Although Sango did miss her brother and father, she wasn’t that homesick. As for Miroku, he had been a wander and had no home, so he was just fine with staying in such a luxurious place; no matter how run down it was.
Sango had readily excepted Kagome as a friend, and Miroku… well maybe he had excepted her to readily. (Greeting her with a so called “possessed hand” on her bottom.) Then again, this little introduction had only earned him a sound beating by a thoughly ticked off slayer.
Sango finally caught Miroku; giving him a good pounding; and came to sit down beside Kagome. She gave the younger girl a smile. "So Kagome-chan... " she paused not sure of how to bring up the topic of how Kagome had come to be trapped here.
Noticing Sango's hesitance Kagome helped her out. "Your wanting to know how I got to be stuck here aren't you?"
Nod.
Kagome sighed. "There was this man in my village named Kouga who was courting me. I was always refusing him so I guess he finally got fed up with it and placed a spell on me to make it so I had to follow him into the forest surrounding our tiny village. We rode for most of the day and he finally brought me to the clearing on the otherside of the lake. He was intending to rape me to make me "his woman" as he put it, but some sort of noise startled him and I made my escape to the castle..." She trailed off, trying to figure out how to describe her meeting of the young master of the castle, Inuyasha.
Sango spoke for her. "Inuyasha found out you were here and refused to let grandma Kaede to let you go home to your village right?"
Kagome nodded remembering the young boy who had chased her. The familar red-flecked golden eyes came to mind, but were replaced by the look of fear that had overtaken the silver-haired demon when he had seen what he was doing. 'Why did he look so distressed? I was so sure that he wanted to kill me...'
"Kagome? Hey Kagome?!"
Jerking herself out of her musings she looked up at Sango with a sheepish smile. "Sorry... Kinda got caught up in my thoughts I guess."
Sango just shook her head and grinned at the girl. "It's time for us to go to the kitchen for dinner." She stood up and went over to the unconsciouss monk on the floor, poking him with the toe of her felt boots. "Wake up houshi, dinner will go cold if you don't hurry up!"
Almost automatically the supposedly uncouscoious monk jumped up at the mention of food and bowed low to the two exasperated women. "Lead the way to the dinner table ladies!"
Kagome and Sango looked at each other and rolled their eyes heavenwards. "Oh brother..." the muttered before starting for the kitchen.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Inuyasha was jolted out of his thoughts by the now all-to-familar pain in his chest. A clawed hand came up to clutch the area of burning as he stood from his roost and made his way back to the table. 'Might as well get this over with before I can't get back downstairs...' He thought bitterly. He loosened his grip on the pained area and lifted the ivory mirror up. Looking into it's pitch-black depths he gathered his courage.
"What is my fate?" His voice was a barley detectable whisper.
The mirror stayed blank for a moment, then suddenly, the inky surface began to swirl and spin. Finally the surface cleared and showed the demon's face as it was; pale and drawn. The golden eyes lacking luster and spirit. His two fluffy dog-ears drooped with the daily toil of batteling his inner nature. Suddenly the image shifted, showing the same face... only... human. Gone were the demonic ears and golden eyes, replaced by normal human ears on the side of his face and twin pools of deep violet. His hair was black and his skin slightly darker, though pale in comparison to other's skin. The mirror's reflected eyes widned as the picture stilled. Inuyasha was at a loss for words, it had been fifty years since he had actually seen what he had once looked like as a human.
He quickly placed the mirror back in it's original position, still unable to believe what he had seen. Did it mean that there was a slight chance that he might be freed from the tourture of his existance? Did it mean that he might actually find peace? His wonderings were cut short as the pain shot through him again, but this time more intense. "D-damn it..." he cursed as he quickly made his way to the door. Opening it he dissapeared down the stairs, the doorway closing behind him with a soft thud.
He made it to his room just as the pain became unbearable and he collapsed in a heap on the floor as the urges began to taunt him. He squeezed his eyes shut as wave after wave of agony washed over him in tides. Gathering the remainder of his physical streangth he weakly pulled himself up onto his bed and curled into the fetal positon; knees tucked up to his chin, hands curled into tight fists.
At that very moment he wished that he could just die, so hard was it to resist the urges to let go and allow his cursed nature to take over. Yet he couldn't, he was cursed to live for an eternity in this same agony if he failed to break the spell. The voices began to whisper in his ears again, promises of relief from the constant pain and misery. But he choose to ignore them, he wouldn't give up the remainder of his human soul so easily. What small amount of humainity he had left in him, he intended to keep!
He kept those thoughts in his head as the feeling of being ripped apart bit by bit from the inside out became more intense and he let out a long howl of pain...
======================================
Kagom e jumped as the sound reached her ears. She was sitting at the small table in the corner of the kitchen, just like she had done with Kaede not but a day ago. The only difference was that Sango and Miroku now joined them. She looked from the drawn face of Kaede to the worried faces of her two new friends.
"Umm... W-what was that?"
Kaede and the others exchanged glances. "That was Inuyasha..." Sango murmured quietly as she turned to her friend.
‘Inuyasha? Do they mean the demon?’ Kagome glanced over to Kaede. “W-what’s wrong?”
Kaede sighed, “the young master has not been well for many years now. He suffers terribly daily from pains.” The woman lied.
Kagome’s brow furrowed. “And you haven’t given him anything to ease his pain?” She asked, a thought forming in her head.
Kaede shook her head. “Unfortunately there is no one in the castle who has knowledge of healing. I have done the best that my training can, but to no avail.”
The raven-haired girl clapped her hands together. “Well now that won’t do will it?” She grinned at the confused table-mates. “I was born and raised a shrine priestess, so I know all there is to know about healing and pain-relief!” Standing up the now fully motivated girl marched over to the still boiling tea-kettle and pored a steaming cup of water. She turned to the silent Kaede. “Where do you keep your herbs and medicine Kaede-sama?”
The older woman gave her a confused look. “In the third cabinet beside the cutting board. Why?”
Kagome smirked. “I’m going to give this so called lord a pain-killer so he can rest at ease.” She winked cheerily at the dumbfounded group. “Don’t worry! I know what I’m doing, I used to have to do this all the time back at my village.” She continued to dig through the cupboard until she found the herbs that she needed, taking the amounts she required she put them all into the cup of steaming water and stirred the concoction until the antidote was colored a dark green color. She looked around the kitchen. “Now where in the world is some honey...”
Miroku recovered from his stupor first and quickly tried to discourage the girl. “No Kagome-sama! I advise you not to go to Inuyasha when he is in such a state!”
Sango followed with her own pleas, “Kagome listen to Miroku. He’s right, Inuyasha would become angry!”
“Wait Miroku, Sango.” Kaede spoke up. She turned to the girl. “We have no honey here at the moment. But take your potion up to Inuyasha if ye wish to, but I advise ye to take care not to anger him so... I don’t believe that he will hurt you but take caution anyways.”
Kagome looked from one face to another, just as another wail of pain was heard throughout the building. She nodded and left the room.
Sango turned a shocked expression to her grandmother. “Grandmother are you mad!? Does the girl even know about Inuyasha’s and the rest of this place’s curse?! He’ll surely kill her in the state that he’s in!!”
Miroku opened his mouth to agree, but was cut off by Kaede. “Inuyasha attacked her once before, but he stopped before he did any real harm. I highly doubt that he will harm the girl.” She smiled. “ I believe that we may have found the cure for his misery, that is why I let the girl go to him. Usually he would have just killed any other trespasser on his estate, but he spared the girl’s life. Not to mention that he was the one who took her to the spare bedchamber...”
Miroku gave Kaede a semi-shocked look. “Do you mean to tell me that our stubborn, arrogant, and hot-headed friend actually carried Kagome-sama up to her room on his own accord? And he didn’t kill her?”
Kaede nodded and took a sip of her tea. “I think that he sensed something in our new house-guest...”
>>>>>>>>>> ;>>>>>>>>>>>.
Kagome stood in front of the door to Inuyasha’s chambers, the cup of potion held in her hands. The sounds had ceased and it sounded like everything was quiet inside. She took a shaky breath, all of her earlier courage had disappeared as soon as she had set foot outside the warmth of the kitchen. Did she really think that her plan would work? That this lord would let her go if she showed him kindness? She sighed and shook her head. ‘Kagome Higurashi, you really are an idiot aren’t you? First off you let yourself be kidnapped by some crazed man, then you get yourself into a worse mess, tangling with some demon lord. Now you actually think that he’ll let you go?’
The girl smacked herself on the head. “Great...” she muttered. “Now I have little voices in my head telling me I’m an idiot.” Suddenly a soft whimper caught her attention. ‘Was that him?’ She thought with a small amount surprise. ‘I can’t believe that he’d sound so..., so lonely...’ She smiled softly, “maybe he just needs a friend?” she whispered to herself as she felt her courage return. Pushing on the door lightly she found that it was unlocked. Putting more pressure on it she let the momentum open the heavy oak door enough for her to get in.
Kagome peeked hesitantly into the room, seeing only a tattered bed and torn tapestries that blew in the breeze that came from the shattered window. She shivered, then she noticed the curled up form on the far edge of the bed. Silver hair was spread in a disheveled mess around the boy. His face was turned towards her, and she could see that his expression was a pained one. Suddenly something on top of the boy’s head twitched and Kagome had to force herself not to gasp at what she saw. Two furry triangular ears were perched on top of the silver-mane of hair, swiveling in his unconsciousness.
Slowly the girl stepped to the side of the bed, not sure what to do now that she was in the same room as her “captor”. Setting the cup of tea on the floor she kneeled beside the remains of the bed and looked into Inuyasha’s face. She noticed how unusually pale his complexion was, as if he hadn’t been well in ages. His breathing was slightly ragged and his body rose and fell with jerky motions.
A strange feeling welled up within the young girls soul and she found her hand reaching out to touch the pale, yet sweaty brow of the demon before her. Just as her fingertips brushed the edges of his silky silver-bangs, a soft moan escaped the boy’s chapped lips. Suddenly his eyes snapped open and she found herself staring into deep pools of liquid gold.
Giving a squeak of surprise Kagome tried to withdraw her hand, only to feel the strong grip of another’s close over her slender wrist. Inuyasha was sitting up in an instant, his golden orbs scowling at the human girl before him. “What the fuck are you doing here wench?!”
