To Hell and Back

Chapter 3:

By the time they made it back to the Sengoku Jidai, the sun was down and the moon was high in the sky. They started to walk back to Kaede's when Kagome stopped in her tracks.

Inuyasha turned to see her staring at the ground with a determined look on her face. "Kagome? What are you doing?"

She looked up at him and shook her head. "N-nothing. I just don't know what to say to them."

He put his hand on her shoulder and looked into her eyes. "You don't have to say anything. They can mind their own fucking business."

She smiled at that comment. It was almost like he was back to normal. "I know I don't have to but... they are going to ask."

"Just say nothin' happened. That you were able to change me back. It'll be okay."

She nodded her head in agreement but before they could head any further, Shippo screamed, "Kagomeeeee!" The small kitsune jumped into her stomach and slightly pushed her backwards.

Inuyasha instinctually growled at the kitsune for getting too close to his mate. He quickly shook his head to get those unwanted thoughts away. He saw Miroku and Sango along with Kirara on Sango's shoulder, trailing behind where Shippo had run from.

Sango had his Tetsusaiga in her hand and Miroku had Kagome's big yellow bag. Inuyasha unconsciously growled again. How dare another man hold onto Kagome's things? How dare he get his scent on her!?

He stomped up to the two humans and snatched the items from their hands without a word before he walked back to Kagome and Shippo.

"What happened, Kagome!? We were so worried. He didn't hurt you, did he?" Shippo practically yelled it at her.

Their other friends waited for a response, and watched as Kagome glanced at Inuyasha and back at them.

"Uh... No. I'm fine. I changed him back using the command. Everything is fine." She gave them a reassuring smile, but Sango didn't buy it.

"Are you sure you're alright, Kagome? Why did you go back home? Why are you in different clothes?" Sango asked worriedly.

Kagome's entire body flushed before speaking, "um... My clothes got torn up by the trees in the woods as we were running from you guys. I just decided to go home and get dressed before coming back. Oh, here Shippo!" She quickly changed the subject by pulling out a lollipop and giving it to the small Kitsune. It seemed to work, because he immediately got distracted and sucked on his candy.

Sango gave her a questioning look, but decided to drop it for now. Then they all decided to head back to the village. Inuyasha is thanking the Kami once again that Shippo couldn't smell the change in Kagome's scent. He figured it was because she bathed well, and he was just a child with an untrained nose.

After they rested for the night, they decided to head back on the road the next morning. Kagome seemed slightly less jumpy, but he still noticed her having nightmares throughout the night. Each time, he would lightly pet her head and move the hair from her sweaty face. He felt like the worst type of person imaginable for doing this to her. The only woman that has ever made him a truly better person. But now, he was no better than Naraku in his eyes.

While down the dirt road, Inuyasha noticed that his intincts wouldn't allow him to keep his eyes off of Kagome. He's walking a lot closer to her than normal, and it definitely didn't go unnoticed by the group. He growled whenever Miroku got too close, and he had to hold back his growl when Shippo was nearby. He was perfectly fine with Sango and Kirara though.

He knew his friends, save for Shippo, could not hear him speaking to Kagome so he had to ask her a serious question that has been bothering him since yesterday.

"Kagome..."

"Yeah?"

"Can you uh... still sense the jewel shards? And uh... use your spiritual powers?"

Kagome widened her eyes at those questions and was about to ask, "wh-why would I—"

But he cut her off, "just check for me."

She focused her senses and saw that she could sense the shards around her neck, then she held her hand out in front of her and released a small amount of energy.

Inuyasha sighed in relief and said, "good. I didn't want to take that away from you."

She was about to ask what he was talking about, but then Shippo chimed in from her shoulder, "why would she—"

Inuyasha shut Shippo's mouth with his hand and said, "don't bring this up to the others or you're dead. Got it?"

Shippo nodded his head in the affirmative with a terrified look on his face. Inuyasha released his hand from him and they continued their trek in silence.

The next two weeks were very interesting for the group. Inuyasha wouldn't let Kagome out of his sight. His need to protect his mate was too strong to ignore. He even forced her to allow him nearby while she and Sango took a bath. He promised to face away from them and not look, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. His instincts even had him growl at her to show his dominance. He barely even noticed he was doing it.

Sango didn't like the new arrangement, but she slowly figured out what was happening. They lied about what had happened that day. But why would they lie? She knew her friend was hurt mentally. She figured she was also hurt physically, but she never brought it up. Kagome did a good job at hiding it, but one day in a hot spring, Sango glanced at Kagome's shoulder and saw part of a crescent moon. She gasped when she saw it, but otherwise kept it to herself. She wasn't going to force Kagome to tell her, knowing it would happen when she was ready.

One night, two weeks after the incident while at camp, Kagome saw Kikyo's Shinidamachū. She glanced over at Inuyasha waiting for him to go, but he didn't budge.

"I-Inuyasha?"

"What." It was said as a statement, rather than a question.

"Uhm... Are you going to go see Kikyo?"

Inuyasha stayed silent for a moment. He didn't understand why he didn't care to go anymore. He just knew he didn't want to. "No," was all he could say in return before looking back into the flames of the fire.

Everyone looked at him in confusion, causing him to get irritated. "What the hell is wrong with you people? I said, I'm not going!"

They all looked away from him, and then silence overtook the group of friends. About ten minutes later, Kikyo decided to show up at their place of rest.

"Inuyasha," the undead Miko spoke up in her usual cold tone.

Everyone turned to see Kikyo standing there with her Shinidamachū circling her clay form. Everyone except for the stubborn hanyou.

"Inuyasha!" Kikyo's normally stoic demeanor vanished for only a second, and clear as day, you could see the anger on her features. "Why do you ignore me, Inuyasha?" she spoke much more calmly.

He stood up slowly to face the undead Miko with his eyes determined and his lips in a fierce straight line. "What do you want, Kikyo?"

Kikyo was taken aback by the unusual coldness in the hanyou's stare and the words he had spoken. Before she thought to respond though, something caught her attention and she quickly turned her head to the younger Miko. "You!"

Kagome stood up and stopped directly behind Inuyasha's still body. "Wh-what?" she responded, cursing herself for stuttering.

Kikyo looked back at the hanyou with rage in her eyes. "How could you!?"

"What are you talking about, Kikyo?" He was afraid of her answer, and then it came.

"That disgraceful woman is pregnant. The slight youki is emanating from her womb!"

Everyone gasped. Kagome put her hands to her stomach and backed up slightly. It was what she feared. She is pregnant from the night she was raped. Tears threatened to escape, but she held them back. She would not cry in front of Kikyo.

Inuyasha looked back at Kagome with a saddened expression, but he still couldn't help but feel excitement. He's going to be a father. But then he felt angry at himself for forcing Kagome into this situation.

Before anyone could speak up, Kikyo faced toward Kagome with an arrow notched. "How does it feel, girl. To give yourself to a dirty half breed? You disgust me. You are nothing but a tainted, defiled, whore! You and your unborn youkai spawn deserve to die!" Then she let the arrow fly.

Inuyasha shielded Kagome from the arrow with his Tetsusaiga, pushing it back with as much force as he could manage. The purifying arrow caused the Tetsusaiga to transform back to its rustic state. "You're wrong, Kikyo! She's not a whore! She... She didn't even want it..." he said that last part in almost a whisper, but everyone heard him anyway.

The gasps from around the fire were deafening. Everyone knew. They all knew that she was raped. Kagome felt like hiding under a rock for all eternity, curling up in a ball, never to come out.

Kikyo could only smirk. "So, you show yourself, half-breed. You rape the woman you claim to protect. You're disgusting. But I guess everything worked out as it should have. The whore deserved what she got. She was raped by the man she loves, she lost her powers and now, she's going to lose her life and her child." She notched another arrow and pointed it directly at Kagome's heart.

Inuyasha stood in front of Kagome once more. He noticed his youkai trying to escape at the threat to his mate and pup's life. He sheathed the Tetausaiga and held it tight even though it was just a rusty old sword at the moment.

He growled deep within his throat and spoke much more menacinly than ever before, "stay. away. from. my. mate." His eyes are flashing back and forth from the deep crimson that stole Kagome's virginity, to the bright gold that she knows and loves.

Kagome started to back up slightly, scared that the worst will come true again. "No... n-not again..." Her heart is beating faster and her breathing is becoming labored. Would Inuyasha's youkai rape her again? She didn't want to take the chance to find out.

Kikyo only laughed maliciously before speaking up again, clear enjoyment written in her features, "you see? She is scared of you! You both deserve death."

Before she had the chance to let her arrow fly, Inuyasha flung forward, grabbed Kikyo by the throat and slammed her into a nearby tree. He held onto her throat while his eyes became the color of blood.

She stared into his blood thirsty glare and spoke through the feeling of her air pipe being constricted, "you... are... just a... dirty... half-breed."

Inuyasha pulled her forward and slammed her back into the tree once more. He released his hand from her throat, stood up, and looked into her eyes. "If you ever try and hurt my mate or our pup again. I will kill you." He turned to leave, and soon after, Kikyo lost consciousness. Her Shinidamachū lifted her up into the sky and left the scene.

Inuyasha, still in his full youkai form, walked up to Kagome. Miroku and Sango got into their fighting stance, and Shippo hid behind a growling Kirara.

Kagome backed up slightly with fear in her eyes, but Inuyasha grabbed her wrist to keep her still. Miroku and Sango started to walk forward when Inuyasha gave them a warning growl. They backed off slightly, but still kept up their guard.

Kagome started to tremble in fear, but what happened next, stunned her. Inuyasha grabbed her and pulled her to his chest. He embraced her shaking form and released a rumbling sound that sounded similar to a purr.

Kagome let out a breath of relief and wrapped her arms around his waist. Inuyasha asked, "is my mate okay?"

"Y-yeah. I'm fine, Inuyasha." She pulled away just a little to look into his eyes. They are already fading slightly to a less pronounced red. She smiled up at him. "Come back to me. Please."

Inuyasha leaned in and kissed her lightly. Kagome's eyes widened, but slowly fluttered shut and embraced him tighter. When he pulled away, his eyes were back to his normal golden hue. She blushed at their intimate contact and started to pull away, but Inuyasha grabbed her close again and hugged her tight.

"Are you okay? Did I hurt you?"

"I'm fine. You didn't hurt me. You protected me. Thank you."

He smiled into her neck and then pulled away once more. Realizing there is an audience, they both blushed and stepped away from each other.

Miroku spoke up to say something lecherous, "soooo... you two—" Sango elbowed him in the ribs and glared at him. Now is definitely not the time to comment on that. He got the point and shut his mouth.

Sango then spoke up, "so... do you want to tell me what happened, Kagome?"

Kagome reluctantly agreed and it took her ten minutes and a bunch of osuwari commands to convince Inuyasha to allow them to bathe by themselves.

Kagome and Sango are sitting in the hotspring in complete silence. Neither of them know what to say to the other. Finally, Sango spoke up first.

"Kagome... Before you say anything... Are you... safe with Inuyasha?"

Kagome snapped her head towards Sango. She hasn't thought about it before. She always felt safe in Inuyasha's presence, but now... things were much different. She was raped. She was forcibly impregnated by her rapist. She sighed to herself and looked away from Sango's gaze.

"I feel safe... for the most part." The last part was just above a whisper.

"What do you mean? Are you scared of him?"

Kagome shook her head, and then brought her knees up to her chin and wrapped her arms around her legs. "I'm not scared. I'm just... nervous. I have been having nightmares for the past couple of weeks about it. Usually it ends with me killing him with my spiritual powers! I don't mean to... it just happens. I was so close to using my powers on him that night, but I chose not to. l believe I made the right choice now." She put her legs back down normally and put her hands to her stomach. "And now... now I'm fifteen and pregnant! I don't even know what I'm going to tell my mom! If she knew I was... forced... she would never allow me to come back here or see Inuyasha again!" Tears started to escape her eyes at that last thought. She could never imagine being forced to stay away from him.

Sango put a reassuring arm around Kagome's shoulder and pulled her close. "I'm so sorry this happened, Kagome. Um... do you... do you still love him?"

Kagome immediately brought her head back up to look into the taijiya's eyes. "I know I shouldn't. I should hate him for what he did to me! But... I... I don't. I am so in love with him it hurts, and I don't understand why!"

Sango held her tighter and allowed her friend, who is like a younger sister to her, cry into her shoulder. "I understand. Those feelings don't just go away. It'll be okay. I promise."

Back with Inuyasha, Miroku and Shippo, Miroku tried to spark up conversation. "So... you two are mates now?"

"Keh..." Was all Inuyasha would say in return.

"Inuyasha?" Shippo asked him nervously.

"What do you want, runt?"

"What does 'rape' mean?"

Miroku and Inuyasha gave each other a look as of to say, 'you say something!'

When neither of them responded, Shippo grew impatient. "Well? What does it mean?"

Miroku was about to explain but a clawed hand covered his mouth and said, "it means... you are too young to understand. Now shut the hell up and never ask that again." He released his hand from the houshi's mouth and glared down at the kitsune.

"But—"

He was cut off when Inuyasha thumped his head. "And don't you ever bring it up to Kagome! It will just upset her. Got it!?"

Shippo is sitting on the ground with tears in his eye,s and his hands feeling the bump on his head. "F-fine, you big meanie!" He curled up with Kirara after that.

About thirty minutes later, the girls came back to camp and quietly set their sleeping rolls up to go to sleep. Inuyasha walked up to Kagome and without a word, lifted her up bridal style and jumped up into a nearby tree. Kagome yelped in surprise and once they were up there, she scolded him.

"Inuyasha! Don't scare me like that! I was not ready to be lifted!"

His ears wilted guiltily as he looked away, "s-sorry. I just... wanted you to sleep up here with me tonight... You know... 'cause it'll be safer..."

Kagome looked at him with surprise, but decided there was no harm in that. She situated herself between his legs with her back up against his chest. She cuddled into him and a slight blush crept up on both their cheeks. Soon, Kagome was out like a light. Their group of friends decided not to comment on it the new budding relationship. Due to the situation, even Miroku didn't say a word.

Another two weeks go by and Kagome is a month into her pregnancy. She has had less and less nightmares these past too weeks. They still occur every now and then, but it isn't every night, anymore. For that, she's thankful. She woke up this morning and immediately had to throw up. She couldn't stand the smell of food, and no matter what Inuyasha or her other friends said, she refused to eat.

"Come on Kagome! You have to eat something," Sango said to her.

"I can't! I'm too freakin' nauseous! Ughhh."

Everyone looked back and forth to each other. It's not a full on curse, but it's still not like Kagome to use that kind of language. She must really not be feeling well.

Inuyasha put a hand on her back and started to rub small circles to try and calm her down. It was his fault this was happening, afterall. "Why don't we head to your time and be seen by one of those 'doct-tors' you told me about?"

Kagome gave him a small smile, "I don't know, Inuyasha. It's just morning sickness. Plus... I don't want the doctor to find anything abnormal about the baby... because it could have dog ears or claws."

Inuyasha is more confused than ever, "how would they know before it comes?"

"Well... in the future, they have a machine that can look inside of my belly." Seeing the look of horror on his face, she cleared it up, "they don't cut you open or anything. They put a gel on my stomach and move it around. Then you look at a screen and you can see the baby. It's completely harmelss."

Inuyasha is astounded that such a thing exists. "I want to see it. I want to do that... if... if you are okay with it..."

"Well... I guess it's still really early for it to be too developed. Okay. We can go back. I should probably get some prenatal medicine anyway." At the look of confusion on her friends' faces, she clarified, "It's like a medicinal herb used in the future for pregnant women. It's good for the baby."

They all decided to pack up and head back to Kaede's. When they finally returned, they informed Kaede of the pregnancy, but didn't go into too much detail about how it was conceived. She gave Kagome her own check-up and then congratulated them on their mating. She was pleased to know that Kagome didn't lose any of her spiritual powers and then told them to return soon.

Kagome and Inuyasha climbed out of the well on the other side, and instead of going through her window like they normally would, they took the front door. They had a long conversation ahead of them.

They entered the house to see her mother in the kitchen and her brother watching TV in the living room. Her grandfather was out in the shed working.

"Mama? We're back!" She walked into the kitchen with Inuyasha trailing close behind her with a nervous expression on his face.

They sat at the table across from her mother who was currently sipping hot tea. They exchanged nervous looks and Mrs. Higurashi got worried. "What's wrong dear?"

"Mama... I'm pregnant."
