To Hell and Back

Chapter 4:

"Mama... I'm pregnant."

The silence that followed was terrifying. Inuyasha started tapping his claws against his knees from nervousness. He slowly started to scoot away from Kagome, noticing the look her mother gave him. 

'She's gonna kill me. I just know it!' he thought to himself.

Kagome took a deep breath in. No matter how nervous she is, she's not going to lose her temper. She plans on keeping eye contact and dealing with this like an adult.

When Kagome was about to say something else to break the silence, Mrs. Higurashi silently stood up and grabbed two more mugs. She poured hot water into the mugs and added a tea bag in each. She placed the mugs in front of her daughter and her — whatever he is to her. She sat back down across from the two nervous 'teenagers.'

Mrs. Higurashi took a calming breath in and let it go slowly before speaking, "So, how did this happen?"

Kagome and Inuyasha glanced at each other nervously. Kagome looked back into her mothers eyes and started her explanation. "Well... we were fighting a youkai. Um... Inuyasha was swallowed whole. He lost his sword, which seals his youkai blood. He ended up killing the youkai from the inside out, then uh... we got separated from our friends. We ended up in a secluded area away from everyone and just... got caught up in the moment... He almost died and he protected me. I'm sorry mama. I know I'm too young in this time period to have a baby. It was a one time thing and we haven't done anything since! I'm sorry." She looked away from her mothers gaze, feeling completely disgusted with herself. She disgraced her family name.

Inuyasha's ears lowered as she explained what had 'happened.' He hated this. He hated himself.

After a moment of processing, Mrs. Higurashi responded to her fifteen year old daughter, "I see that you understand it was completely irresponsible for you two to... do that... at this age. Now, you have to live through the consequences." She turned to Inuyasha to speak to him directly, "And you. You are going to take full responsibility, correct?"

"Y-yes ma'am. I will be here for Kagome for the rest of my life. That's a promise I will keep."

She nodded her head and looked back at her daughter. "Now that you are going to have a baby, Kagome, you need to act like an adult. Are you planning on staying in school?"

Kagome hadn't thought that far ahead. She wants to stay and get good grades but... how would she do that? The looks and things people would say would be heartbreaking. "Umm. I think I'm going to go until I start to show too much and then I'll get my GED."

Her mother sighed. "As to be expected. I wouldn't force you to stay somewhere that would be cruel to you."

Inuyasha finally spoke up after long silence on his part, "Is it really that bad for someone her age to get pupped in this time period?"

Kagome and her mother both nodded their heads in the affirmative. Inuyasha's ears went down and he looked away. "I'm s-sorry Kagome. I know how much this 'skewl' thing means to you."

Kagome's mother spoke up first, "It is just as much Kagome's fault as it is yours dear. As they say, 'it takes two to tango.' Now both of you need to take responsibility for your actions."

Inuyasha didn't know what that saying meant, but he wasn't in the mood to ask. He felt way worse after she said it was also Kagome's fault. The truth is, it wasn't Kagome's fault at all. He raped her. Whether or not he was in his right mind doesn't matter. He did it and now Kagome has to pay for it.

Mrs. Higurashi decided a change in mood was in order. "Well, why don't we make an appointment with the gynecologist and get some prenatal medicine for you? Then we can go baby shopping! That sounds like fun! Oohhh, I wonder if my grandchild will have cute little doggie ears!"

Inuyasha and Kagome both blushed and look away from each other at her mother's last comment. If Kagome had gotten pregnant because of her own choice, then she is sure she would be saying the same thing. But it was kind of hard for her to think like that for the moment. Inuyasha on the other hand, can't even believe why someone would want his child to look anything like him. Especially the one thing on his body that marks him as a hanyou. But, he realized, Kagome and her mother are different. For that, he is grateful. But, he still has to live with the fact that he ruined the love of his life's life. He'll never forget it, and for the rest of his own life, he will prove to her how sorry he is.

Mrs. Higurashi doesn't understand why they are being so shy, but she decided to ignore it. When she noticed Inuyasha and Kagome start to get up to leave, she spoke up, "Aren't you two forgetting something?"

Inuyasha and Kagome glanced at each other and then looked back at her mother.

"Baby shopping!" her mother exclaimed.

Down the street; Kagome, Inuyasha and Mrs. Higurashi are leaving their first stop; the drug store. Kagome was caught up in looking at the bottle of prenatal medicine in her hand when she bumped into someone.

"Oh! Sorry."

Three girls turned around to see Inuyasha, Kagome, and her mother standing right in front of them.

"Kagome! It's been such a long time. How are you feeling?" Eri asked excitedly.

Kagome was too stunned to think to hide the bottle in her hand, and before she was able to do anything, Ayumi spoke up, "prenatal medicine? K-Kagome? A-are you...?"

Mrs. Higurashi decided to give her daughter some privacy. She said she was going to run an errand before they went to their next stop, so feel free to do whatever and then meet at the mall in an hour.

"Why don't we go somewhere to talk?" Kagome asked nervously.

They agreed easily, and the four girls and one hanyou started on their way to the girls' favorite hang out spot, WacDnalds.

When they made it to the restaurant, Kagome ordered for herself and Inuyasha since he has never had this type of food before. Then the other three girls ordered for themselves and they all sat down at a secluded table. Inuyasha and Kagome on one side, and the other three girls on the opposite side.

"Alright Kagome, spill," Yuka got right to the point. They remembered Inuyasha from the one time that they met him. His looks are very recognizable. They all thought he was extremely hot, but they still worry about the whole 'two-timing, bad-boy' concept.

"Okay, yes... I'm... pregnant."

The three teenage girls gasped and immediately started to bombard the hanyou with questions.

"How old are you?"

"Why didn't you use protection?"

"Are you going to be there for Kagome and the baby?"

They didn't even give him a chance to answer a question before more questions flowed freely out of their mouths.

"Enough! Look. We are... engaged. We are planning on being together forever, so he is definitely going to be in me and my childs life. Please, no more questions right now."

"Awwweeee, you two are getting married!? That's sooooo cute. I can't believe your mother is allowing you to do this at such a young age." Ayumi practically swooned over the young love.

Kagome and Inuyasha both blushed. Inuyasha didn't know what 'engaged' meant but he understands what marriage means. It's what humans do to bind themselves together. But it's no where near as strong as mating. His ego grew at the thought of his kagome telling her friends that. 'Dammit! It was just a stupid one night screw up! It's not like she's with me by choice... I gotta stop thinking like we're actually together...'

Inuyasha was so lost in thought, he didn't notice someone trying to talk to him.

"Hello!? Inuyasha!"

"Huh. What!?" he snapped back. He turned to see a blushing Kagome and her nosey friends right in his face.

"I saaiiddd... are you in love with Kagome?" Ayumi asked him.

Inuyasha immediately blushed and looked at Kagome's nervous face. "Uh... well... I'm marryin' her, ain't I?" He ignored the 'aawwee's from the girls and decided to stuff his face with food instead.

Kagome looked at him through her reddened face and teary eyes. 'He had to say that... We have to pretend while we are in the modern world.' 

The rest of the lunch was pretty quiet. Just normal teenage gossip at that point. They left the restaurant and split off afterwards. Kagome took Inuyasha's hand and led him to their next destination.

Once the couple made it to the mall, they saw Mrs. Higurashi waiting on the bench outside. They met up with her and the three of them went inside.

"So uh... What kind of stuff do we need to get this early in the pregnancy, mama?"

"Oh dear, you could get anything to get ready! Diapers, a crib, clothes, bottles, tons of useful items. Let's go look at the cribs first! You're going to need something for both Era's."

They walked to the back of the mall and found their first stop. It was a store specifically for babies and small children. They went to the back of that particular store to where all the cribs and changing stations were.

Kagome started looking at all the prices and her face flushed, "Are you sure we can afford all this mama?"

Her mother smiled down at her and replied, "Well, since you don't plan to go to college—" she interrupted herself with, "you don't, do you?" Kagome shook her head and her mother continued, "then we can use your college fund to pay for the baby's expenses."

Kagome agreed and Inuyasha asked, "What's a 'col-lidge fund?'"

Kagome turned to him and answered, "It's a spot where you keep a ton of money so you can afford to go to college. College is an optional school after you finish highschool."

"More skewl!?"

Kagome and her mother only giggled in response which caused Inuyasha to blush in slight embarrassment.

They looked through all the different options and finally decided on a changing station and crib that they liked. They decided to get two of each, one of each for the modern world, and one of each for the past.

After they were finished with that, they looked at the baby clothes. They didn't know the sex of the baby yet, so they decided with some generic options. Then Kagome said that she wants to get both boy and girl stuff, and depending on what the baby ends up being, they would return whichever gender clothes they didn't need.

Her mother thought that that was a good idea, so they grabbed tons of different options from newborn all the way until 5T sized clothes. There were clothes for boys that said stuff like, 'momma's little man' and girls clothes that said stuff like, 'daddy's little girl.' They grabbed little dresses and little suits. Even little bow ties if it's a boy, and little hair bows if it's a girl. They made sure to grab some cute baby hats and mittens in case they needed to hide any abnormal yokai features. They didn't forget about the variety of bibs they also picked out.

Inuyasha felt really out of place and slightly embarrassed, but he kept his mouth shut and went with whatever Kagome and her mother did or said.

When they were done clothes shopping, they went to get different types of bottles and pacifiers. They grabbed a bunch of different sized diapers and a couple diaper bags and a few different types of papoose for both Era's. Inuyasha didn't quite understand the purpose of all these items, but didn't say anything.

They changed direction and went to the baby bathing area. They grabbed two little baby baths and different types of baby soaps and wipes. They grabbed special rash cream just in case, and some soft wash cloths and towels. They picked up some baby nail clippers. They even picked up a baby thermometer and a humidifier in case it got sick. Kagome ignored Inuyasha when he tried to convince her that a child with yokai blood wouldn't get sick so easily.

They grabbed a stroller for the modern, Era but they didn't think they needed one for the Sengoku Jidai period. They would just use the papoose. They also didn't grab a car seat since everywhere they go is within walking distance.

They went and grabbed a baby bouncer and a baby swing. And a few different rattles and other toys to keep it happy and entertained.

They picked up a breast pump, pumping bra, ice packs, breast milk storage bags and nursing pads. When Kagome had to explain what they were for, both her and Inuyasha were the color of his robe of the fire rat.

Then they went into a different part of the store and got a rocking chair and a baby high chair.

Once they checked out, they had all the large items shipped to their home since it would be impossible to carry everything. All the other bags, Inuyasha insisted on carrying for them. Mrs. Higurashi mentioned that the errand she ran earlier was to withdrawal money from the college fund in order to pay for the baby stuff. Inuyasha felt terrible, but Kagome told him that for a while now, she didn't plan on going to college. She wanted to at least finish highschool, but it wasn't the end of the world that she wouldn't get to.

When they made it home, Inuyasha put all the bags in the living room where Souta and her grandfather were relaxing in front of the TV. Kagome immediately flushed, thinking about how bad this conversation was going to be.

Souta jumped up from his spot on the floor and ran to all the stuff. "What is all this for?" he asked innocently. Then his eyes widened and he pointed at his sister, "Nee-chan! You-you—"

Kagome looked away and blushed, "Y-yeah Souta, I'm pregnant."

Kagome's grandfather jumped up from his spot on the couch, "WHAT!?" He angrily stared at the terrified hanyou and started to chase him with sutras that don't even work. "You defiled my granddaughter!"

"Jii-chan! Stop!" Kagome yelled as Inuyasha was running away from her crazed grandfather. He quickly halted and stared at his granddaughter.

"You are just a little girl. You are far too young to have a child!" He reprimanded her.

"Technically I'm an adult in Inuyasha's time. But... It's not like we planned it! It just... happened. I'm sorry Jii-chan." She looked away feeling more ashamed than ever.

Her grandfather dropped the sutra onto the floor and pulled Kagome into his arms. After a long embrace, he kissed her on the top of the head and said, "We will get through this." He turned to Inuyasha with a scowl on his face and said, "And I expect you to be there for my granddaughter! You hear me?"

Inuyasha nodded his head really fast, "Y-yes sir." Kagome smiled at how polite Inuyasha can really be when he is in the presence of her family.

Or threatened with bodily harm.

Souta then started to ask them tons of questions as he was super excited to become an uncle at such a young age. He was saying how awesome it would be if his little niece or nephew had doggie ears and sharp claws. He seemed to be more excited than everyone else combined. He didn't feel any of the fear that the rest of the family did. Although, he is just a kid after all.

After they ate dinner, Kagome said she was going to get some studying done. Inuyasha followed her up the stairs, but she warned him to be quiet or she is sending him on his way to go deal with Souta.

"You're going to allow your daughter to be alone with that boy in her room?" their grandfather asked Kagome's mother.

"Well, they are going to be parents now. I told her to act like an adult, so I'm going to treat her like one. Inuyasha is staying here with us this week, and even though it's slightly bothersome, it's their decision what happens behind closed doors."

Kagome is sitting at her desk, studying for her next math test. Inuyasha is sitting cross legged on her bed and fidgetting annoyingly.

"Ugh, Inuyasha... If you are going to keep that up, you can't stay in here."

"I just don't get it. You're going to stop this whole 'skewl' thing, so why the hell do you keep doing the work?"

"I told my mom I would stay in school until I started to show physically that I'm pregnent. I also said I was going to get my GED. I need to study for that."

"Whats a G-E-D?" he asked innocently.

"Its a quicker way to finish school."

He growled at her. "So, you could have done this the whole time!? Instead of coming back to 'study'?" He growled again in annoyance.

Kagome turned around in her chair to glare at him. "I wasn't planning on doing this! I wanted to finish school the more common way. The way people don't look down on you for doing it! This isn't my fault, you know!" Immediately upon saying it, she regretted it. "Inuyasha... I didn't mean—"

"Keh. I know what you meant. And you're right. This is all my fault. If I could have controlled my youkai side, this wouldn't have happened. I'm sorry." His ears drooped as he looked away from her gaze.

All thoughts of studying aside, Kagome went up to Inuyasha and sat down next to him. She didn't say a word as she rested her head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her and sighed in contentment.

After a few minutes of this, Kagome spoke up, "It's... okay. Each day, I forgive you more and more. I know you didn't mean to. I know it wasn't really you."

He pulled his head away to look down into her brown eyes. He used a clawed hand to move a strand of hair from her face, and when she didn't flinch at the contact, he smiled.

Lost in the moment, he leaned down slowly towards her lips. Kagome's eyes widened at the realization of what he was doing. Her eyes slowly fluttered shut, deciding to meet him half way.

Their kiss was much different than the ones before. Where the others were just lust and fear driven, this one was slow and sensual.

Inuyasha slowly moved Kagome's body to sit on top of him, straddling his hips. She didn't resist so he kept kissing her with as much passion as he could muster.

He has a clawed hand behind her neck, keeping her face to his, while his other hand rests comfortably on her right hip.

Kagome's mind was extremely fogged over. She didn't want to stop and it kind of scared her, but it also felt exhilarating. She kept kissing him, picking up the pace, her hands around his neck, and her legs around his waist. She ended up getting so into it that she unintentionally grinded her hips against his, accidentally pushing him too hard, and they fell back onto the bed, with her on top of him.

The unintentional movement scared her into pulling away, and she looked down at him with a large blush on her face. She quickly scurried off of him and backed up. He sat up on the bed with the same blush on his entire body and didn't say anything.

Kagome decided to break the silence by saying, "So, uh... I don't think I can study any more tonight. I'm gonna go to sleep."

Inuyasha moved from the side of her bed to sit at his customary spot in front of her window. He watched as she laid down in the bed and covered up in her sheets. He is grasping his Tetsusaiga to keep his youkai burried within himself.

After a few minutes of tossing and turning, Kagome reluctantly spoke up, "Inuyasha?"

He opened his eyes to look into hers, "Yeah?"

She gulped and averted her gaze at this next question, "Do you... wanna sleep in the bed... with me tonight?"

His eyes widened at her question, but he spent almost no time in standing up and inching himself closer to her.

"Are... you sure, Kagome?"

She nodded her head to say yes as she scooted over and lifted the blanket for him to get in with her.

Inuyasha tried to keep down his blush as he got into her sheets. He felt so comfortable laying on her bed before, but now, with her next to him, it felt much better than he could have realized. He rolled over to face her, and they both smiled at each other before closing their eyes and allowing sleep to overtake them.
