Chapter 8

Everyone felt uneasy about what Kikyo had in mind. They stared at her in disbelief trying to make sense of her menacing statement.

"She's losing it!" shouted Miroku. "I wish I still had my wind tunnel ... We could end this right here and now!" Miroku said patting Inuyasha's shoulder.

"It's okay, Miroku ... step back ... this is our fight!" Inuyasha asked his friend.

"Inuyasha, please ... no matter what happens ... do not interfere!" Kagome asked her husband.

"I can't keep that promise, Kagome, I love you too much to stand by and do nothing ... I won't stand by and watch you do this alone," he pleaded.

"Please Inuyasha, I must do this, I won't lose ... trust me my love!" she replied as power began to throb within her heart.

"As you wish my Kagome, as you wish," he acquiesced.

Inuyasha had faith in Kagome, for as he approached her in the castle he felt a wave of great power emanating from her. He then knew she'd be alright.

"Listen everybody, none of us are to interfere as Kagome must face Kikyo alone ... I trust her so too must you ... we have to respect her wishes!" he said turning to each of his worried friends and looking into their eyes and hearts seeing their loyalty and love. They were all naturally upset, but knew they had to step aside.

"Kikyo!" Kagome shouted as her hands began to pulse with energy. "It will end here with us ... I will not allow you to take Inuyasha away from me, nor will I have you interfere in our happiness ... Prepare to die, Kikyo!" she challenged as her entire body surged with power.

"You pitiful woman ... you can't harm me!" she retorted as her own power built up.

Kikyo charged Kagome at full speed; Kikyo's speed surprised her. Kagome held up her hand and visualized an energy shield and it materialized instantly causing Kikyo to slam into it. The force of the collision knocked her off her feet and she flew back and landed upon the floor. Kikyo jumped to her feet shaking.

"What the hell was that?" she screamed.

"I told you I'm stronger than you think," she replied smiling.

Without warning Kikyo sent an energy blast at Kagome, but she couldn't jump clear and its impact threw her against the wall and she slid to the floor. Blood seeped down the back of her neck, for she had hit her head pretty hard.

Inuyasha couldn't believe he had to stand by and watch this. He kept his hands wrapped tightly about the hilt of his sword. He knew he had promised her not to intervene, but neither was he about to let her die. Kagome recovered herself and climbed unsteadily to her feet, then approached Kikyo once again.

"Touché ... pretty good, Kikyo ... I didn't see that one coming," she bowed mockingly and smiled at her bewildered opponent.

"Ha, ha ... I told you, you cannot..." Kikyo didn't have time to finish her sentence, for Kagome in an instant flew at her and punched her with so much force she was knocked off her feet and it was Kikyo's turn to hit the wall.

"I have never seen Kagome use her fist before ... my god, what force!" Inuyasha said smiling while Kikyo regained her senses.

"she hit me ... I can't believe it ... she actually hit me!" she shouted.

Kikyo had a bruise forming on the right side of her face, but Kagome didn't give her enough time to react as she came at her again. Kagome used her fighting skills instead of her powers; she was so angry. The others were a little taken aback at Kagome's strength, for they had never seen her display such power and aggression before.
Kikyo lay on the ground bloody and badly beaten; she couldn't believe the punishment inflicted upon her by her adversary and was beside herself.

"That's it ... no more miss nice Kikyo!" she cried as she climbed to her feet.

Kikyo called forth her soul collectors and sent them to gather around Kagome; However, Kagome read her opponent's thoughts, and this time she was ready for her.

Suddenly, Kagome produced some sort of fire mist from the palms of her hands, and sent it towards Kikyo's soul collectors instantly destroying them.

"No!" screamed Kikyo. "How did you do that?" she asked Kagome shaking her head not knowing how to react.

"I can hear your thoughts you idiot ... haven't you figured that out by now? ... Whatever you try and do to me... I'll anticipate it and stop it," Kagome answered looking the more confident of the two women.

"Ha, you won't stop this!" Kikyo yelled and stabbed Kagome with a crystal dagger.

Kagome screamed a heart wrenching scream and fell to the ground.

"Kagome!" they all cried and ran to her side. Inuyasha lifted Kagome gently into his arms and eased her onto his lap.

"Oh Kagome please be okay," Inuyasha said as his shimmering tears threatened to fall.

Kikyo stood to one side laughing.

"I told you I would kill her, and now I have!" she boasted feeling the surge of satisfaction as she continued to laugh.

Kouga stood like a statue in the doorway, horrified by what he'd just witnessed.

"No! ... I told you not to kill her ... I want her for my self ... How could you do this you stupid b***h? ... We had an agreement, Kikyo!" he shouted shaking his fists at her.

"Oh please! ... The world is better off without that stupid woman!" she hissed at him.

Inuyasha stroked Kagome's face whispering words of encouragement as his heart shattered; Kagome hadn't regained consciousness, and Inuyasha was frantic.

"Please be okay my love, please, I need you!" he said as Miroku and Sango sat either side of him and put their arms about his shoulder.

Kouga stood glowering at Inuyasha with a hateful jealous fire in his eyes.

"It's your fault Inuyasha! ... these Two women fought for your love ... if you weren't in the picture, Kagome would still be alive and happy with me ... not lying dead in your arms!" he shouted.

Kouga's words hurt him deeply. Inuyasha didn't hear his following statements, for he was too angry to listen. Inuyasha allowed Sango to cradle Kagome's still form in her lap and stood and looked at Kikyo and Kouga with pure hatred in his eyes. Kouga was frightened by that look; he had seen Inuyasha's anger many times in the past, but not like this.

"You were part of this also, Kouga, and I'll kill you for dragging Kagome into this!" he vowed and looked down at his beloved. "He's right! ... it's partly my fault, for if it weren't for me, Kagome wouldn't be hurt," he said as tears welled up in his eyes.

Inuyasha did something he had never done before; he began to cry.

"I'm so sorry my darling, please forgive me," he sobbed as tears splashed upon Kagome's soft cheeks.

Kouga was not going to forgive him; his anger was about to explode violently. Suddenly, Kouga grabbed his sword and charged at Inuyasha. However, Inuyasha knew he was coming, but made no effort to move.

"I will be with you soon my love," he sobbed as he smiled down at his beautiful wife.

"Oh, no you won't!" Kagome said as a hint of a smile formed upon her sweet lips.

Inuyasha's eyes opened with surprise and elation as Kagome came to. Kouga rushed toward Inuyasha, but as Kouga swung his blade down he hit an invisible shield and was thrown back. Kagome's barrier protected both herself and Inuyasha.

Kouga picked himself off the ground and shook his head and picked up his sword that lay a few feet away; Kouga's jaw dropped as he stared disbelievingly at Kagome, Inuyasha and the others.

"Are you okay?" Inuyasha asked kissing her.

"Yes, I'm fine ... I expected something like that, so I tried as best I could to avoid her attack and it saved my life," she explained while Sango examined her cuts and bruises. "Don't worry, it's not as bad as it looks ... Help me up, please," Kagome asked as Inuyasha and Sango helped her to her feet.

Kikyo was incensed by Kagome's unexpected recovery; she was beside herself with rage as she watched Kagome's friends assist her to her feet.

"No! ... No! ... No! ... Why can't you just simply die you b***h? ... That's it, no one will survive my wrath!" she screamed as Kikyo's eyes blazed with fire.

Kikyo stood absolutely still concentrating her power to fever pitch as she summoned her souls once again.

Suddenly, Kikyo's eyes glowed with an eerie red light as the castle and its foundations began to shake violently and crumble around them.

"My god... what is she doing?" screamed Sango.

Kagome focused on Kikyo as her eyes shot open, and energy pulsed from her body.

"She's opening an underground fissure to devour us!" Kagome screamed.

"Listen everybody ... we have to get out of here, and fast!" shouted Inuyasha as he quickly took command of the situation. "Miroku, Sango, Shippo get onto Kiara and get out of here ... I've got Kagome, so don't worry ... we'll be okay!"

Kouga used his wind speed to exit the castle after Inuyasha and the others had abandoned the castle's interior. They stood back to watch as the ancient fortress crumble to dust and rubble.

"Is she gone? ... No one could possibly survive that!" Inuyasha commented as he felt Kagome's warm body against his and tightened his grip about her slender waist.

"No Inuyasha ... look!" answered Kagome.

Once the dust had cleared they turned to see Kikyo surrounded by her souls. She was very weak, but still on her feet. Kagome felt Kikyo continuing to summon power, but couldn't quite figure out why.

"Kagome... what the hell does she think she's doing?" Inuyasha asked not liking this at all.

"My god ... she's going to destroy everything ... we've got to stop her, and I mean right now!" Kagome cried as her mind ticked over trying to figure out a strategy.

"How can we do that Kagome ... she's to strong for us," Sango declared feeling scared by Kikyo's actions.

"Sango, can I use Kiara?" Kagome asked her friend.

"Yes, Kagome," Sango replied without hesitation.

"Don't worry ... she will be safe with me," Kagome assured her patting Sango's back as she turned and approached Kiara.

"Kagome ... what are you doing?" Inuyasha asked in a confused tone.

"I have to stop her, Inuyasha ... I must do this ... don't worry, I'll be alright!" she cried as he ran along side as she strode towards Kiara.

They stopped briefly and Inuyasha turned her to face him as their eyes met for a second before he kissed her.

"Come back to me Kagome, my love," he said squeezing her hand before letting go.

"I will, you can count on it! ... Kiara, come!" she cried as Kiara moved towards her, and Kagome mounted her.

"Please my friend, take me to Kikyo," she asked Kiara who growled as she led her towards Kikyo.

"Kikyo ... you must stop this insanity! ... Don't you realize that you're endangering everyone's lives?" she shouted to the stone faced Kikyo.

"I don't care anymore; I hate you and everything about you ... I won't rest until you're gone!" she screamed.

"What about your sister, Kaede ... you're willing to kill her too?" Kagome asked hoping to get past Kikyo's irrational state of mind.

"Yes I am ... she betrayed me by befriending you and turning her back on me!" she replied as stinging tears flew from her eyes.

'I can't believe it ... how can she say such a thing? Surely she was mad! ... she's willing to kill her own sister ... I must stop her, but how?' Kagome's thoughts raced through her head as she knew there was too little time to waste.

"Kagome, you must destroy her power," Miyoga told her having once again found himself connected to Kagome's hair.

"How?" she barked impatiently.

"Think back to the time she was manifested; she needed your soul to bring her back ... Your soul had fought against it and reclaimed your life for you ... so therefore, You must now take hers!" Miyoga explained to an attentive Kagome.

"Kiara ... get me closer," she commanded.

Kiara did as Kagome asked, and she timed it to perfection as she jumped off Kiara's back and floated downwards behind Kikyo.

"Kikyo ... you must be stopped!" Kagome said in an assertive and measured tone that made Kikyo feel a little uneasy.

Kagome waited a second or two, and then stepped forward and clamped her hands upon Kikyo's head; Kikyo then opened her eyes.

"Let me go you witch!" she protested.

"No Kikyo ... not this time," she replied as energy built up quickly in her hands as her grip tightened upon Kikyo. Kagome closed her eyes and concentrated.

Suddenly, Kagome's body began to glow a bright silvery white; it was a most beautiful light. Kikyo's body was encased within it's luminous glow.

"No ... stop ... what are you doing to me?" Kikyo cried sounding a little frightened.

Kagome wouldn't let go; she couldn't break the hold even if she wanted. Everyone stared in awe at Kagome; she was truly magnificent. Kagome's aura glowed like a silvery star, for the light hummed and pulsed as it sent waves of light that washed over everyone as they continued to watch spellbound. They couldn't believe she possessed this much power.

Suddenly, once more the ground opened and the souls of the dead that Kikyo had enslaved reached for her. These dark entities then pulled Kikyo into hell with them. Kagome opened her eyes and looked at Kikyo.

"Go to hell where you belong, you b***h!" she shouted pushing Kikyo into the void.

The soul collectors drew Kikyo deeper into hell's fiery depths.

"No ... this can't be happening to me ... I need to be with him ... no!" Kikyo's words drowned as the hot winds of the abyss quieted as the fissure closed and Kikyo's voice faded into the night air- she was gone.

Kagome's friends and her beloved Inuyasha just stood there and stared. They were all too stunned to move or utter a single sound. Kouga thought this the perfect time to abduct Kagome while she floated in mid-air. Kouga flew towards her, but she felt his presence. She held up her hand as an effulgent light shot out from her palm hitting Kouga's chest, and he fell hard upon the ground. Kouga tried to stand, but he found he couldn't.

"What have you done to me, Kagome?" he asked totally stunned as she looked deeply into his eyes, and gave answer.

"I've taken away your wind speed power ... You no longer have that ability!" she smirked.

"How could you?" he stammered.

"I told you I was going to end this ... now go, before I let him kill you!" Kagome advised Kouga who was speechless.

Inuyasha and the others finally regained their composure and walked to Kagome's side having witnessed Kouga's punishment. Inuyasha stood over Kouga and withdrew his sword and held it at Kouga's throat.

"She has given you this last chance ... I suggest you take it and run!" Inuyasha strongly suggested as his eyes fixed firmly on the trembling Kouga.

"I will go for now, but I will be back," he said defiantly.

Kagome held up her hand staring at him not believing the fool's bravado and stupidity, and then her eyes flashed with a silvery-white gleam.

"Like hell you will!" she spat.

Kouga was really scared this time, for Kagome had come into a power unknown to them all. He nodded and then took her advice and ran off; Kagome smiled at his retreating form and then collapsed into Inuyasha's arms.

"Oh my darling, are you okay, I've never seen anything like that ... you scared me half out of my wits ... what is this power, Miyoga?" Inuyasha asked.

"Kagome's powers must have been enhanced after taking back Kikyo's soul." Miyoga replied.

"How are you feeling, Kagome?" asked Shippo who knelt beside Kagome and Inuyasha.

"I'm fine ... just a little tired, can we go home?" she asked looking at Inuyasha and all her friends.

Everyone nodded and smiled at her. Inuyasha picked her up in his arms and set her gently upon Kiara's back. As they started their journey home, there was a sudden rumbling sound as the ground below shook.

"Now what?" shouted Miroku as he stared at the spot where Kikyo had finally met her end? Kagome was smiling, for she knew exactly what was happening.

Suddenly, a white mist appeared hovering above the ground while everyone looked on in astonishment; it began to take form. It was Kikyo; she looked at everyone and then smiled.

"Thank you Kagome, for without your immense power my true spirit would have been lost forever ... That witch conjured and brought back my shadow side ... my hate and jealousy generated by so many had suppressed my true essence ... You have freed me, and now I can take my place in the heavens." She said smiling.

She looked towards Inuyasha, "I am truly sorry, Inuyasha ... please forgive me," she said sincerely.

He smiled at her and gave answer. "Of course,"

"Goodbye everyone, and tell my sister I'm free and I love her dearly," she said as an ethereal tear trickled down the warm loving visage who stood below them. They watched in awe as Kikyo floated skyward and Kagome smiled.

"Goodbye Kikyo, may you rest in peace," she called after Kikyo's luminous form continued its ascent.

"Thank you for setting her free, Kagome my love!" Inuyasha said to Kagome and she acknowledged his words with a radiant smile.

"Now let's go home ... we still have a wedding reception to finish and a honeymoon to enjoy my dear husband. She said chuckling.

Inuyasha blushed at that thought; It was all over, and now it was time for there new life to begin. As the moon bathed them in a gentle light as they flew home.
