Chapter Two: ~Class~ical Questions
Everyone looked with wide eyes when they walked into Tomo's classroom. Seated behind his desk was a human teenager. She had smiled and waved at each student when they entered.
The students were not used to this. Mr. Tomo usually sat behind his desk, but today, the spider demon stood at the chalkboard. Though none of them dared to ask, all of them wondered who the girl was. And why she was in their school.
The bell rang and Tomo began the class as usual. It was odd, really. Usually he would lean back in his chair and go over yesterday's work with a bored yawn. He would then ask for their homework to be brought up to his desk.
Today, however, he told the class to open their homework notebooks to the homework assignment. He then walked down the rows and checked their homework. Many of the students feared something was wrong. Their teacher was not one to walk around the class. In fact, the only time he ever went to the board was to write something on it. Usually, he just taught from his desk. He had the projector on the end of his desk, and that was where he did his work and showed them how to do theirs.
He bagan teaching about equations and writing the steps on the board. Finally, one student couldn't take it anymore and raised his hand.
Tomo gave an irritated sigh, "Yes, Mr. Matsuo?"
"Mr. Tomo? Who is that girl sitting behind your desk?" the brave neko asked.
"That girl is none of your concern," the spider answered in a dangerously calm voice.
Asakura tilted her head. "I'm surprised," she said aloud. All eyes turned on her, but she just looked at Tomo. Her expression was almost that of one who was scolding someone. "I would've thought that by now, you would've introduced me, Tomo. Especially if you plan on bringing me here more often."
"All they are to be concerned about is their work. I do not need them distracted," he growled.
Asakura scoffed, "Well, it's a little too late for that, don't you think? I think just by me being here, they are distracted. After all, I am a human in a demon school. And if I remember correctly, there is only one other human in this entire school and she and I look nothing alike."
"Do you intend to talk this entire time?" he asked.
She shrugged and leaned back in his chair. She delicately placed her hands on the arms of the chair. "Only if you don't introduce me," she warned with a mischievous smile.
He raised a single eyebrow as his eyes narrowed. He wanted to argue with her, but he knew now was not the appropriate time. "This is Higashi Asakura. She is visiting from another school to decide whether she prefers this school more," he half lied.
Most of it was true, especially her name. However, it wasn't really her decision. This was the school she was going to go to. There was no other way around it. It was the only way Tomo could keep her safe.
The neko, who had asked the question before, raised his hand again. Tomo turned to him and glared. The neko pushed the lump in his throat down before persuing, "Is she your mate?"
The whole class went into an uproar over that. Most of them knew that spiders did not take mates. Especially one so powerful as Tomo. It was unheard of and obsurd.
"Silence!" the spider whispered.
The class immediately quieted. Tomo walked up to the neko's desk. They made eye contact and Tomo glared at him. "Is there anything else you wish to know about my private life, Mr. Matsuo?" the spider demon asked in his soft, calm voice. The neko shook his head and Tomo continued, "Then I suggest you keep your mouth closed before you get yourself into trouble."
With that, the spider demon turned and walked back to the board. He rolled his eyes in frustration when he heard Asakura's snarl. "I can't believe you just did that!" she scowled. "He was only asking a question. Yet, you go and treat him as if he just asked about a plaque or some infection. In case you haven't noticed, I'm sitting right here!"
"You won't let me forget that," he shot back, remaining calm.
The teenager pressed on, "Didn't you think for one moment that your students would have questions when they saw me? You'd think someone like you would be a bit more prepared to answer their questions. Just think, Tomo, you answer the questions now, and you won't have to later. Meaning, they'll leave you alone."
"My personal affairs are none of their business," he told her.
"So, what? I'm an affair now?" she retorted.
He tilted his head and looked at her curiously. "Do you even know what an affair is?"
"Do I even care? Yes, I know very well what an affair is. But that is not my point, Tomo. You knew they would be asking you questions like this. I can't just melt into the background when I stick out like a sore thumb," she growled. She was near tears by the time she finished. For whatever reason, she didn't like the idea of being nothing more then an affair to him.
Finally, Asakura gave up. She looked around the classroom and waved. "I'm Asakura. I grew up here in Tokyo," she addressed the class. "Tomo and I are dating, but we aren't 'mates.' I'm going to be coming to this school soon, but I wanted to check it out before Tomo enrolled me. I don't like the idea of coming to a new school and not knowing what I'm getting myself into. I know many of you don't like humans, but I'm hoping you'll at least give me a chance. I'm not as smart or pretty as Taisho Rin, but I do know my stuff. And what I lack for in the classroom, I make up for on the streets."
"Why are you here?" the neko from before asked her.
Asakura shrugged. "I'm going to be staying with Tomo from now on. He wants me to have the best education. I don't blame him, I just hope I can live up to his expectations."
The neko snorted, "There's only been one person in this whole school who's ever been able to do that... I don't understand, though. Mr. Tomo isn't really one to take on wards or girlfriends."
"Our situation is different. It's difficult to explain, honestly, and I don't think we have that much time. Besides, all of you have some learning to do. So, I'm gonna sit in this desk and watch while he teaches and you learn. Don't worry. I promise not to speak up again, unless he says something else that I find appalling. I just wanted to make sure you got your questions answered," she told them, looking more to the neko then the others in the classroom.
"Are you finished, Asakura?" Tomo asked, seemingly annoyed.
The girl nodded and retook her seat. After watching her for a few moments, to be certain he wouldn't get interrupted again, the spider demon turned back to the board and continued with his lesson.
It went on like this with each class. It was the last class before lunch when Rin strolled in. The human girl was almost surprised to find Asakura sitting at Tomo's desk.
Rin walked up to the desk and tilted her head. "Why are you sitting here instead in one of the regular desks?" she asked.
Asakura shrugged. "I'm just watching today. Tomo wants me to stay where he can see me," the girl answered.
Rin felt Tomo walk up behind her and press a hand to the small of her back. She looked up at him. "It's strange, if you ask me," she told him. "I would think you'd put a bit more trust in her. I'm happy you decided not to eat her."
"I made a promise that I wouldn't," he answered.
The young princess nodded. "You should come see Sango. She is absolutely adorable. InuTaisho doesn't like her at all."
Asakura laughed, "Most older siblings don't like their younger ones."
Rin nodded in agreement and giggled, "Believe me, I know. My uncle only comes over when my father's away on business. Or if it's a special family thing and my mother threatens him. When he does come over, it's almost certain he and my father will argue over something."
Asakura looked up to Tomo. "We should go over there one day. I would love to see the baby and it would get you out of the house."
Tomo rolled his eyes but did not argue. Truth be told, he liked the idea of seeing Rin's little sister. Besides, he figured he'll be teaching the child one day.
The bell rang and the students took their seats. Tomo looked to Asakura and waved his hand. She smiled and stood up. "Hey, everyone. I'm Asakura and I'll be coming to this school. I'm staying with Tomo. Yes, we are dating. No, we are not mates. I know Tomo's not really one to have a girlfriend, but I guess he decided to make an exception with me. Don't worry about humans taking over the school. I highly doubt there are going to be anymore after Rin and me. I'm actually more of a fluke anyway. But, that's another story. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi."
Tomo sighed and began his teaching when Asakura sat back down. He could hear Rin stiffle a giggle and he knew the questions she would have for him later. He dreaded those.
The lunch bell rang and Tomo gave out the homework assignment for that night. He turned to his desk and waited for Rin to follow him.
"So, how do you like it so far, Asakura?" he heard Rin ask the other girl.
Asakura giggled, "It's actually pretty cool so far. I can see how some of the demons here won't like me very much. I might have a few problems..."
Rin shrugged. "You'll get used to it. Besides, now that they know you're Tomo's girlfriend, they'll be less likely to mess with you. At least, obviously. They might do subtle things that you won't be able to pin on them."
Asakura gave a wicked grin. "They'll learn soon enough not to mess with me. I bite back. And generally, when I do, I bite hard."
Asakura looked up suddenly and tilted her head. "Who's that?" she asked.
Tomo and Rin turned around to see two figures standing in the doorway. The spider demon gave an audible groan. Somehow, he knew they would show up eventually.
Rin frowned when she recognized the two humans. They were demonslayers. "What has Tomo done?" she asked them, worried for her friend.
The guy, Detective Narita, shook his head. "That, I don't know, Princess. I'm hoping Tomo will be able to clue us in," he answered, looking pointedly at the demon.
"My husband told me about your call last night, Tomo," the woman said. She walked up to the desk to look at the girl who sat behind it. "Is this the girl? I'm surprised you let her live."
Tomo rolled his eyes. "Don't think I wouldn't have eaten her yet. I had promised no harm would come to her, so I've... generally... left her alone."
"Generally?" Narita questioned. "You can't tell me you've claimed this girl. Spiders don't claim mates."
Rin sighed, "He brought her to my birthday party. Through a misunderstanding, she found out he was a demon... as well as most of my family. I was the one who made him promise not to hurt her. She deserves a chance to prove herself trustworthy."
The woman tilted her head. "Are you planning on bringing her to the slayer academy?" she asked Tomo.
He shook his head vigorously. "She will go to school here where I can watch her," he answered.
Narita sighed, "What do you think her mother will do? All ready the woman has a missing persons ad placed for the child. The police have been searching everywhere for Miss Higashi."
Asakura groaned, "That woman never did trust me. Even though I never really did anything to cause that. The only time I've ever lied to her was this weekend because I knew she would blow a fuse if she found out I was dating an older guy."
"I will not begin to dissect why your mother does or does not trust you, ma'am. I'm just telling you what's happening and what's going to happen," the demonslayer informed. He turned to Tomo. "You might have to end up in court. In fact, I know you will if you do not give the girl back to her parents."
Tomo snorted and folded his arms. "As if I've ever lost a court case. Let them bring me to court."
"Tomo," Narita's wife cut in, "I don't quite understand why you are so protective over this girl. She is just a human. However, a court case like the one we are talking about can get real dirty. I'm not saying it will happen, but there's always a possiblity that they can find out you murdered, or ate rather, all those other girls. Besides, most judges around here are demonslayers, so they know what you are. It could be real difficult to convince those judges to give you custody of her."
"You speak as if she's a child," the spider demon growled.
The woman looked at him curiously. She had almost forgotten that most demons had little to no concept of human longevity. Many of them believed that a human was full grown by the age of fourteen. While Asakura certainly wasn't that young, the girl was barely sixteen. "Tomo, she is a child," the woman told him. "If she's still young enough to attend high school, then she is a child. Most humans don't reach adulthood until their twenties. And many take even longer then that to mature."
"I may not be an adult, ma'am," Asakura spoke up, not liking the idea of being referred to as a child. "But, I'm not a child either. I know most people my age are kids, but I'm a lot more mature then they are."
"I do not doubt that," the woman argued, "but, you are still young. Child or no, you are a teenager. And by the law, that makes you a child. I have no doubt that Tomo would eventually win such a case..."
"Then why are we bickering over this?" the spider demon snapped. If they knew he would win, then why were they fighting with him about it?
"We are trying to decide what's best for Asakura," Narita explained.
Rin shook her head. She knew what was coming. Tomo did not disappoint her when he answered in a too calm voice, "This is what's right for her. What do you think will happen when the bulk of the demon population learns she is an unprotected human who knows about them? Asakura is not one to hide in the shadows. She makes herself known to everyone. Such information will not be secret for long. If she is left alone, they will come after her."
"So, you would rather parade around with a human girlfriend?" the demonslayer asked, emphasizing how obsurd that sounded about the demon. It wasn't in Tomo's nature to take a girlfriend. And keep her. "You realize, if you do this, you'll have to protect her until the day she dies. That could be years from now."
"Her life is short compaired to mine. I won't have to wait that long," the spider demon answered.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Tomo?" Narita's wife asked.
At the demon's nod, the two demonslayers agreed that they would help Tomo fight this. If for nothing else, then to make sure Asakura does not get harmed through all of this.
When the slayers left, Asakura walked around the desk and threw her arms over Tomo's shoulders. She rose onto her tippy toes and kissed him on the lips. One of her hands went to his hair, where her fingers tangled themselves. The other hand held onto him by his neck. She licked his bottom lip hungrily.
Tomo returned her kiss, letting his tongue slip out just a bit to touch hers before he pulled back. "What was that for?" he asked her.
She smiled and let her head rest against his chest. Her ear searched for the beat of his heart and when she found it, she calmed. She let her hands fall to his arms and then his waist. "All I've ever wanted is a guy who could make me happy. Someone who could provide for me and help me become a better person. You are incredible, Tomo."
The spider demon looked helplessly at Rin. The girl smiled at him and giggled. He sniffed. She would be no help. He gently pulled Asakura off of him so that he could look at her in the eye. "Do not mistake my intentions, Asakura," he told her. "You are little more to me then someone I have to protect."
Hurt, Asakura pulled away from him. "I'm sleeping in the computer room tonight," she announced to him. He just shrugged in response, for he knew she would end up in his bed before it got too late.
Rin giggled, "Don't worry, Asakura. My dad used to say the same thing all the time when I was little. Back when I still lived in the Warring States Era."
The other girl shivered at that. "You know," she told Rin, "for whatever reason, the idea you are from another time bothers me. I don't know why."
"It bothers a lot of people, but you'll get used to it," Rin assured.
"Hey, why did that guy call you 'Princess'?" Asakura asked suddenly, remembering Narita's name for Rin.
Rin smiled. "My father is the Lord of the Western Lands. To the demons, I am a princess. Technically speaking. At first, I thought it was weird. The only ones who call me Rin are my teachers, friends, and family. Even the students have gotten into the habit of calling me 'Princess.'"
"Because you scared the shit out of them," Tomo commented. "I still want to know where you learned that from."
Rin's face went from innocent to mischievous, but her smile remained. "I guess I've lived around demons too long," she answered mysteriously.
Not long ago, Rin had put a stop to all the abuse she had been recieving from her peers at school. When a group of ogres had started to tease her, she had sent a ball of lightning straight into the chest of their leader. Her classmates still talked about it and many had earned a healthy respect for the young human.
The bell rang and Rin grabbed her books. "Shippo's going to wonder why I didn't have lunch with him today. Oh well. Perhaps tomorrow, we could all have lunch together? I know Edward would like that," she suggested.
Tomo shrugged as Asakura accepted the invitation. He really didn't care much for social gatherings, but he didn't mind being around the rat demon or the fox. He assumed Rin would have her wolf friend come along as well. He didn't really mind that either.
He watched as the students filed into the class. He knew the questions that were running through their minds when they saw Asakura. He also knew the teenager would answer those questions. He was just happy he only had two more classes to go through.
