Too Late?

Chapter 1

“Come on, you're going to slow!” Inuyasha yelled from the front, not even bothering to look back.

Kagome stopped for a minute catching her breath. Ever since she had lost her bike, traveling with Inuyasha had become much more difficult. The path through the forest wasn't to narrow, and the trees shaded the group from the hot sun that risen today, but now the sun was settting, leaving a bitter chill running through Kagomes body.

“Hold on Inuyasha, Kagome looks like she's tired” yelled Shippou from a spot on Mirokus' shoulder.

“Just a minute…ok? I'm sorry for being such a…burden.” Kagome said through breaths, her hands resting on her knees.

The whole group stopped and looked back. Kagome had gotten a little used to the constant walking as the rest had, but she still looked exhausted. A little rest would do her good.

Sango walked over to Kagome, placing a hand on her back. “Kagome, are you ok?” she asked, bending over slightly to catch a glimpse of Kagome's face.

“Yes I'm…fine. Can we please stop for a minute? Pleeeeaase?” she pleaded, regaining her breath, and slowly standing up.

Within seconds, every pair of eyes were caught in Inuyashas' direction. Everyone froze, Kagome and Sango a little in the back, Miroku and Shippou near the front, and Inuyasha, glaring at the head of the path.

“What are you all looking at me for” Inuyasha yelled, noticing the strange way everyone stared at him. There was no answer. He tapped his foot impatiently; thinking. A long pause ensued; the breeze picking up and blowing about, the sounds of Kagomes' breaths like every other noise, faded away. Inuyasha crossed his arms and huffed. “Fine”.

Everyone cheered and walked into the forest, finding a nice spot to camp for the night, and talking amongst themselves along the way. Inuyasha was slow to follow.

They found a spot and set their belongings down, a clearing in the midst of some trees. They split up on different duties. Some to gather kindling for the fire, and today since Kagome had run out of her beloved “Ninja Food”, the group was forced to gather water from the river to boil and prepare some fish. Kagome did have her pots, pans and kettles, which Inuyasha constantly complained were a waste of space, and only weighed her down.

Kagome walked off on her own for once, surprisingly Inuyasha did not follow. He can't be mad that we stopped, can he? He'd have no reason to, I mean, the sun had already set. Kagome thought as she walked. After she almost tripped, she suddenly regained herself. She had arrived at the river.

“Hmm, where's Kagome with our fish?” Shippou asked to no one in particular. The fire was now warm and pleasant, comforting against the icy winds of the forest. Winter would approach soon.

“I don't know. Sango, you haven't happened to have seen Kagome in some time have you?” Miroku added his voice calm and reasonable, like that of the monk that he claimed to be.

Sango felt as small pressure on her backside, noticing Miroku had moved closer. Hiraikotsu was on the other side of the fire, so she couldn't reach it. A woman's touch is better anyways. “Pervert!” she yelled, accenting the large slap that rung throughout the entire forest.

“Sango, why do you pain me so?” Miroku asked soothingly, feeling the mark on his face which matched that of Sangos' hand.

“You're such a lecherous perv” she stated, instantly scooting herself farther from him.
Miroku sighed. Shippou now bored with Mirokus' shoulder moved to cuddle on Sangos'.

Inuyasha stared into the fire, a sedated look on his face that didn't really say anything. He looked to Kagomes' sleeping bag. It looked untouched, but rolled out nicely, welcoming anyone who wished to climb in. She's still not back yet… the thought rolled through his head, repeating every few minutes. Finally he could stand it no longer.

“I'm gonna go find Kagome.” He said, and with a flash, he jumped from two trees, and was out of sight.

Within a minute he hurried to the river where she was supposed to have gone too.
He saw her. Sitting along the shore of the silent river, the wind blowing back her hair, was Kagome. The moonlight looked beautiful against her skin, the wind accenting her ebony hair, drawing it back, the slowly letting it fall. The notion soothed him for some reason. The wind brought her scent his way, it smelled so sweet, no matter how many times he had complained to her that it smelled bad. It was a familiar tangy smell, with citrus accenting its peak. He watched her from a little further down the bank, seeing her from the side. She hugged her legs loosely, and looked slightly upwards, towards the distant stars. The wind tugged at her hair, it swayed back, then was slowly brought back down.

Inuyasha couldn't help but watch her. The whole scene was beautiful. The stars were so bright; the moon was a little dulled, but looked magnificently luminous. A strong breeze created small waves in the river and grass, then the trees, and once again pulling Kagomes' hair back, then gently receding. The setting was perfect, but Kagome looked…..lonely. Was this what Kagome had once meant by “atmosphere?”

Inuyasha snapped back, when he saw Kagome turn her head his way. He saw a small smile pass her lips, an emotion passed through her eyes, but he couldn't tell what it was. She turned her gaze back to the river. Inuyasha smelled her scent spike when she saw him; maybe she wanted to see him? The very thought made him blush.

Inuyasha remembered the whole reason he came to look for her. Why hadn't she gathered the fish for dinner? He slowly made his way over, and sat himself by her. It was calm, the sound of the wind relaxed him and he brought himself to sit more loosely. The wind blew strands of Kagomes' hair near Inuyashas' face. He couldn't help but smell deeply as Kagomes' scent poured out of them. He regained himself quickly. They weren't close enough to the river to see their reflections; they were still on the grassy bank.

Kagome sat motionless for a minute, then without warning rested her head on Inuyashas' shoulder. They both blushed deeply, but neither moved away. Inuyasha didn't feel like asking her about the fish. At that moment he knew, this is what she had meant; it felt so natural; it was perfect.

“Inuyasha…” she said through a smile, her eyes closed. Inuyasha blushed again; he didn't know how to respond. Though he wouldn't admit it to anyone, he didn't know much about the complexity of a girl. How they got upset so easily, or how…he thought. …How they are so sweet some times, like Kagome…. “Kagome...” Inuyasha whispered back through the cold wind.

The two sat there for many minutes, enjoying this time together. Secretly though, Inuyasha was worried the gang would come looking and spoil their moment. He knew within his given time he had to make this special, who knew when they would be able to have something like this again?

Inuyasha nudged Kagome lightly. Inuyasha searched her eyes for the right thing to do. He knew what he wanted….but did she want it to? Kagomes' eyes only reflected happiness. They truly looked different from the loneliness they had shown a little while ago. At that moment, he was sure. It was what he had to do.

Inuyasha gripped her tightly and slowly brought her closer. He saw no fear in her eyes, only the welcoming of what was to come. They began to close their eyes, closing the small gap between them…

“Aaahhhhh!” a scream pierced the night tranquility, breaking the grip the two had on each other. Before Inuyasha had realized what had happened, Kagome was already on her way to the campsite. “Sango!” another voice came. Inuyasha fully aware of trouble back at the campsite jumped up and was on his way…
