Inuyasha gripped her tightly and slowly brought her closer. He saw no fear in her eyes, only the welcoming of what was to come. They began to close their eyes, closing the small gap between them…

“Aaahhhhh!” a scream pierced the night tranquility, breaking the grip the two had on each other. Before Inuyasha had realized what had happened, Kagome was already on her way to the campsite. “Sango!” another voice came. Inuyasha fully aware of trouble back at the campsite jumped up and was on his way…

Too Late?

Chapter 2

Kagome ran as fast as she could, winding through trees, jumping over fallen logs, with agility she did not know she had. The wind whipped her face, as did the occasional small branch, slight cuts appearing over her cheeks.

When she heard the scream, she didn't even think… she had just…reacted. Something inside her drove her, faster, harder, everything to keep moving, everything to not stop. Her breathing irregular, her eyes blurry, she rushed by some unknown force through the forest. She knew she was getting closer to the camp site. Fire, miasma…..something had attacked.

She reflected her thoughts inward. Did she run when she had heard Sango scream? Or had that simply fueled her to run from Inuyasha. Her eyes flickered a second, but then returned to normal. No, she thought. I was perfectly content being there with Inuyasha…I think he was too. We were so close… The memory of his touch, his smile, the searching look he had in his eyes, the look of need, want, and…love? The thought made her blush, she then wondered; did Inuyasha love her? The signs were there right? He wouldn't reject me…right? This made the miko frown. What if she was wrong?

Before she got a chance to think it over, she had arrived… Miroku and Sango sat on their knees, a defeated look passing over both of them. Her eyes past quickly over the campsite, then rested on the person responsible for this. His eyes glinted a dark color, a look of evil suppressed in his eyes. She could not help but fear the very sight of him. She wanted to look away, but she couldn't…her eyes stuck in fear on the thing that had done all this. No, it can't be you. She thought, the very idea rattled her head. This was their enemy? It looked her in the eye in the most sinister of ways. “Ahh, just the priestess I've been looking for…” Her eyes widened, with the last of her will she silently prayed. Inuyasha, Help me…please…

Inuyasha jumped from tree to tree, branch to branch. The smells of the forest made it hard to decipher her scent. He couldn't see her. He looked for a trace of green clothes, a hint of ebony hair, her caring eyes, somewhere in the depths of the forest. Even her faint scent was moving fast. After he leapt a few trees forward, he spotted her. It took all his jumping ability to keep up with her. Like no one he had ever seen, she nimbly leapt, and dove, and glided her way through the forest; swiftly maneuvering her way through the passage of trees. It was impossible to keep his eyes on her. Since when had Kagome gotten so fast? Within mere minutes he reached the edge of camp, Kagome had gotten ahead, and disappeared.

Inuyasha jumped into camp. “Sango, Miroku?” There belongings were strewn about; the fire, still going had caught on to a few things. Inuyasha quickly stamped the fires out. No one seemed to be here.

“Miroku? Sango?” he called out, searching the trees for any movement. The forest gave no reply. “Kagome!” A few moments passed. His doggy ears sunk. Suddenly he caught it; the scent of the others, all seemingly in one place. With a quick jump off the ground, he jumped in the direction of his friends, and the scent of a demon.

“Hiraikotsu!” Sango yelled, sending her giant boomerang into the air. The boomerang missed its target by a segment, and returned to its still moving master. We have to keep going or we'll lose them. Kagome, hang on a little longer, Sango thought pushing the ideas of failure out of her head.

They ran side-by-side, Sango and Miroku, in a desperate attempt to stop the demon without hurting Kagome as well. “Can't you use your wind tunnel Miroku?” the monk shook his head, keeping his gaze forward. “No, not with Kagome within the proximity, and with Kirara at Kaedes' village, it will be difficult to keep up with this demon” he remarked, adding a tinge to the fact that Kirara was gone.

Sango hung her head, and then looked up with new determination. The demon was getting away. She hoped with all her heart it wasn't really who she thought. “Inuyasha, where are you?”

Kagome looked helplessly up at the monster that had taken her. For a moment she thought this was her rescuer, but the look in his eyes, there was no mistake. This was the man who had hurt her friends and taken her away… but why? The demon saw she was awake, and smiled an evil grin. With a weak voice she asked, “What do you want from me?” The demon laughed then said, “You shall see.” She cringed at his tone but then heard a familiar battle cry. “Wind Scar!” Immediately, the demon changing his route, jumped to dodge it, then set Kagome down in front of him. The wind scar had destroyed most of the trees in the area, so they were now in a burnt clearing. Inuyasha stood at the other end, wielding the Tetsaiga with a newfound strength. He gasped as he saw Kagome's captor.

The person only at least 20 feet away, that had hurt his friends and was threatening Kagomes' life….looked exactly like himself.

Inuyashas' eyes quivered. “Who the hell are you” he yelled, never letting his Tetsaiga lower.

The demon Inuyasha laughed; laughed with a cold spike in his voice, that made Kagome shiver in fear. The demon kicked Kagome to the ground, a painful “oomph” following.

“Kagome!” no response came from the priestess on the ground...

“KAGOME!”
