Chapter 5 - A Tragic Memory and an Evil Smile

"Please Inuyasha! Don't leave me! Not now... I need you!! Oh please just be alright! Inuyasha, I need you to be alive!!"

A voice rang out through the darkness and pain that was shrouding Inuyasha's mind. He was in shock, and his body felt like it had been run over by a truck. Something was grasping onto his hand, and he felt the slow drip of liquid on his haori. He attempted to smell what was holding so tightly to him, or at least sense the presence of another being, but he couldn't regain his senses from the blast of power that had struck him.

`Where the fuck am I? And what happened?' Inuyasha thought to himself as he tried to sit up, but his muscles were not co-operating with him. He thought hard to remember what had caused him to wake up in such pain and confusion.

Suddenly images of Kagome screaming his name and running towards him crossed his mind, and he remembered an immeasurable pain.

`Kaze no Kizu!' His voice rang out in his head.

`That's it! We were all fighting that bird youkai and I used the wind scar on it. That's when it grasped me in its beak and dragged me into the power I had release from the tetsusaiga. I don't remember anymore after that, so I must have lost consciousness.' Inuyasha thought. He could now distinctly hear someone crying, and something collapsed onto his chest. Still unable to move well, Inuyasha slowly opened his eyes. His hair was covering most of his vision, but he still caught a glimpse of a young girl lying on his chest and sobbing uncontrollably. She raised her head and looked at his face, but was obviously unaware that he could see her. His eyes were shielded from her by his thick silver hair. Shakily she reached out a hand and gently touched his face, a look of great sorrow in her eyes, her own face stained with tears.

"Inuyasha..." He heard her mutter before dropping again onto his chest and clutching him tightly.

`Kagome...' Inuyasha thought to himself, confused at why she was so concerned about him.

`Does she really care about me that much?' He wondered.

"I can't live without you..." Kagome muttered so softly that Inuyasha could barely hear.

`Well... That certainly answers the question...' Inuyasha thought in amazement. So Kagome really was concerned about him? She truly cared about him. Not just that! Without him she couldn't live, or so she had said. All of these thoughts raced through Inuyasha's mind, causing him to stir.

"Inuyasha!?!" Kagome gasped as she felt him move underneath her. She backed away but grasped onto his hand once again, squeezing it tightly.

`Shit... I shouldn't have moved! I kind of like hearing Kagome say all that stuff about me...'

"Please be alright." Kagome whispered, worry in her voice. Inuyasha quickly made up his mind that he couldn't pretend to be unconscious any longer, so he moved slightly again, letting out a low moan. He closed his eyes just before Kagome softly brushed his bangs away from his face. He reopened them slowly, fluttering them slightly to pretend as if he was just regaining consciousness.

"Oh Inuyasha! I'm so glad you're okay!" Kagome sobbed, tears of happiness streaming down her face. She literally flung herself onto him, hugging him tightly and laying her head on his chest. She closed her eyes and smiled as she continued to cry softly. Inuyasha let out a small grunt of pain when Kagome had embraced him, but it was nothing compared to the happiness that was coursing through his body. He smiled faintly and wrapped his arms loosely around Kagome's waist, holding her to him.

"Kagome." He said softly, more to himself than to the young girl. He smiled faintly. Sango, Miroku, and Shippo all watched in amazement as the two continued to hug each other, oblivious to the fact that they had a bit of an audience.

Black hair blowing softly in the breeze, what appeared to be a young girl walked silently through the woods. A quiver of arrows was strapped loosely to her back, and she held a beautifully carved bow in one hand. A peaceful expression was visible on her face as she slowly trudged through the trees and bushes. She looked up at the pale blue sky and took a deep breath of fresh air.

`It's good to be alive...' The woman thought, but a frown crossed her mouth as the words ran through her mind. She shook her head and let out a sigh, a look of emptiness appearing in her eyes. Her mind began to wander, dwelling on her past and what her life used to be like; what it could have been like. Flashes of a village, her sister, and a pink glowing jewel appeared before her eyes. She looked to the ground, a small tear rolling down her face. The thought of her past saddened her deeply. Suddenly an image of a man appeared in her mind. Dressed all in red with silver flowing hair, exotic amber eyes, and dog ears; this man triggered so much emotion in her heart that she had to kneel to make sure she didn't collapse on the spot. Another tear fell. She hung her head, and when she finally glanced up, utter rage was visible on her face. Anger and sadness could be read in her eyes, and she clenched her bow so tightly that her knuckles began to turn white.

`Inuyasha, the pain you have caused me is so strong; it's almost unbearable. Why do I dwell on the past when all it causes me is agony? Why am I continually forced to remember you, to think of what we were, what we could have been? Because... You are not my past, you are my future. You will be mine once again. Mine to love, mine to hate, mine to kill...'

At that thought she quickly stood up and brushed herself off. She tied her hair in a white ribbon, letting two small pieces out to tuck behind her ears. She smiled faintly, and then pushed all emotion from her stature. Her face was blank, her eyes cold. She secured her quiver to her tightly, and began to walk through the forest once more. She continued to walk, not allowing her mind to wander. She was alert, searching for a sign of a demon or a Shikon jewel shard.

`The Shikon no Tama. It's responsible for everything...' She allowed herself to think, but then quickly pushed that thought aside, focusing once more. Her pale skin seemed to glow in the bright sunlight as she walked, and her black hair shined, glistening softly. She suddenly sensed something, turning around quickly to see a large youkai spring from a tree and glide towards her. In one quick movement, she reached behind, grabbed and arrow, fastened it in her bow and let go to watch it sore towards the approaching youkai. A pale light surrounded the arrow as it flew, and it stuck the demon letting out a strong radiance. The light died, and she turned around and began walking again as if nothing had happened. Her face remained emotionless, and she continued to march in silence.

It was not until later that afternoon that she sensed it. The presence of a hanyou ran through her body. A very familiar hanyou. Her eyes widened slightly, but she was determined to remain cold, allowing no emotion to cross her face. However, what she felt was entirely a different story. Even though her appearance remained emotionless, deep inside her feelings were churning. A deep longing emerged, followed by sadness and thorough rage. She began to walk faster in the direction that she sensed the hanyou, stepping delicately over the plants and roots of nearby trees. In front of her, she caught a glimpse of a clearing, and began to slow down, intent on not allowing anyone to sense her or know that she was there. She silently stepped closer, and peeked out from behind a tree. Before her was a large clearing, and from what she could tell, a battle had recently occurred there. She glanced at the monk, demon exterminator, and kitsune, recognizing them as the hanyou's companions. On the ground a few feet ahead of them, lay a girl clutching onto an unconscious form.

"Inuyasha..." The woman whispered, her mouth hanging open slightly as she watched the scene in front of her. The girl had now dropped onto the hanyou and was embracing him tightly, causing a small frown to appear on the woman's face as she watched, hidden in the dense forest.

"Please Inuyasha! Don't leave me! Not now... I need you!! Oh please just be alright! Inuyasha, I need you to be alive!!" She heard the girl's voice ring out.

`It's her, the one who holds my soul.'

She watched as the hanyou moved slightly underneath Kagome. She had pulled away and was gently brushing away the hair from his face.

"Oh Inuyasha! I'm so glad you're okay!"

Kagome pulled him into a tight hug, and to the woman's dismay, the hanyou wrapped his arms around her and returned the embrace.

Anger and pain coursed through the woman's body, she dropped her bow to the ground, her hand dangling limply at her side. Snakelike creatures suddenly floated to her side, soaring silently around the enraged woman. The Shinidamachuu. She glanced at the quickly before turning back to look at the hanyou and young girl.

"I think it is time to pay Inuyasha another visit..." She said softly to herself. A slight smile crossed her lips; a smile that would have sent shills through anyone's body. Kikyou narrowed her eyes, glaring at the couple, before silently turning away and disappearing into the darkness of the woods.
