Chapter 8 Home Away from Home
“Inuyasha cover your eyes! Look away! Something!” She exclaimed, extremely embarrassed.
Inuyasha looked at her. Her body was so beautiful. She was so perfect. Her skin, her curves. Everything about her was all Inuyasha could wish for. Mind and body. But at the moment, he didn’t care. He looked away as she asked. Inuyasha was just glad she was okay.
“Uhh… Inuyasha?” Kagome murmured.
“What is it?” He asked still turned away.
“I can’t walk. Will you go and get my clothes for me?” She asked him blushing bright red. She was glad Inuyasha wasn’t looking at her.
“Sure thing. I’ll be right back. Save your strength and don’t stress yourself.” He told her as he got up and ran over to where she had taken her clothes off. He picked the clothing up, making sure he got everything, and ran back to Kagome. He bent down to her and handed her the clothes. “Do you need help?” Kagome blushed again, but nodded. She was exhausted. Inuyasha didn’t disrespect her like he promised earlier. He gently helped her put her arms into her sleeves and helped her stand to put her skirt on. When she was finally clothed, they sat down side by side to talk.
“I’m really sorry for all this.” Kagome said with an upset look in her eyes.
“I’m just glad you’re okay.” Inuyasha told her flat out. “If anything would have happened to you, I would never be able to forgive myself.” Even the thought of Kagome’s death squeezed at his heart.
“It was all my fault. I was careless. I shouldn’t have gone out that far. I should have seen the ledge and-...” Kagome was cut off by Inuyasha’s finger.
“But you didn’t, and you’re okay. That is all that matters.” He told her, ending the conversation.
“Inuyasha, I wanted to tell you something.” She started. “But I don’t want it to make it weird between us. You have to promise.”
“Yeah, nothing can change us.” He reassured her. He wanted to know what was on her mind. He wanted to tell her about his feelings that he had developed for her and he wondered if she had feelings for him as well. He was snapped back into reality when he heard her voice.
“Well, uhhh… I-I… ummm…” She stuttered.
“Yeah? What is it?” He asked.
‘I want to tell him. I do. But what if he doesn’t feel the same? Then what? There’s no way things wouldn’t change between us. I want to stay with him a while longer. If he has feelings for me or not. Wait! I promised him a present, right? I have a plan.’ She plotted.
“Well, I was just gonna ask you… if you… would… ummm…” She thought, and thought, when she finally came up with an excuse. “Carry me back to the clearing! Yeah! I’m still really weak you know and I won’t be able to walk all that way by myself.” She said as she put a pitiful puppy dog face on. She knew he wouldn’t be able to resist.
Inuyasha fell for her plan and agreed. He gently put his arms under her and lifted her up. He carried the petite woman in his arms a few feet from the clearing so that Kagome wouldn’t have to explain why Inuyasha was carrying her. Kagome felt so safe in his arms, and she hated the feeling when he put her on her own two feet. Little did she know, Inuyasha didn’t want to put her down either. He felt almost helpless when he wasn’t holding her.
When they walked into the clearing, they saw their new friends meditating side by side. Kagome could just see the happiness radiating off of the two of them. She was very happy for the two of them. When the couple finally noticed Kagome and Inuyasha standing there, they stood up to greet them.
“Well we still have a good half a day left. Do we want to start heading to the next town?” Miroku asked them as he placed his hand around Sango’s waist.
“Yes! That would be lovely!” Kagome said eagerly. She wanted to get there as soon as possible. “Let’s get going Inuyasha!” She said smiling at him.
Inuyasha nodded and smiled back. ‘She really does have a contagious smile.’ He thought. Sango and Miroku walked side by side, with Kirara on Sango’s shoulder, as did Kagome and Inuyasha. Sango and Kagome walked next to each other so they could chat with one another.
“So have you told him yet?” Sango whispered as soft as she could into Kagome’s ear.
“No, not yet. But I have a plan.” She whispered back. “But I can’t tell you it because he might be able to hear us.” She told her friend motioning towards the hanyou’s ears twitching. Sango giggled and continued another conversation.
Kagome knew him too well. Inuyasha could hear every word they said and now he was curious. “Hey Kagome, you doing okay walking? You’re not too tired, are you?” Kagome blushed a little at Inuyasha’s concern.
“Yeah. I’m doing okay Inuyasha. Thank you for asking.” She thanked him. Maybe he did care more than just a friend.
“What happened that you would feel weak? You seemed fine at the hot springs? Did something happen?” Sango questioned.
“Yes, please tell us.” Miroku asked with just as much worry as Sango had.
“Well… It’s a funny story…” Kagome said with a fake laugh. “After you left, I had walked deeper into the water and slipped on a hidden ledge under water. If Inuyasha hadn’t heard me yell I would have drowned.” She said lowering her head in shame for her idiocy.
“Oh my! I’m so glad you’re okay!” Sango exclaimed as she hugged Kagome. When she released her, she turned to Inuyasha. “Thank you so much for saving her Inuyasha!” She said facing him. Inuyasha just ‘Feh’ed her and turned away.
“You saved my ladies friend and I greatly appreciate it, Inuyasha. If there is anything I can do to repay you, please don’t hesitate to ask.” Miroku said slightly bowing to Inuyasha.
“It was nothing. I didn’t do it for her anyways. I just saved Kagome, for Kagome. You don’t own me anything.” Inuyasha replied to him. Kagome just smiled when he said he did it for her.
“Inuyasha, now that everyone knows, I am feeling a little shaky.” Kagome told him. She wasn’t feeling that bad but she wanted to be closer to him.
Inuyasha turned to her with a little concern. “Hop on my back. I’ll carry you until we can get a good meal.” He turned his back for her and bent down a little to help her get on. She mounted him piggy back style so that he could carry her. She was glad he couldn’t see her face. She took in a big whiff of his scent from his hair. His scent was amazing to her. It even calmed her. The smell of the trees and other aspects of the wilderness. It was like he was the wilderness. She gently ran her fingers through his silky smooth, silver hair. She wanted to rub her face in the magnificent main, but she resisted.
“So how much farther is the next town anyways?” Sango asked. She was feeling a little hungry and wanted to quicken this process.
“We have to go a little farther and we’ll reach the edge of town.” Kagome told her. She slightly snuggled into Inuyasha’s back and hair. She once again took in his scent. She wanted to memorize it so she would never forget it.
“How do you know? Have you been around here before?” Miroku asked politely.
“I used to live there for a while.” She said. Memories started to rush back to her. “After I left my birth place, I wandered until I found this town. I stayed with an older lady who also had miko powers, and she helped me learn to control my powers. Once I had enough control, I left there as well and traveled once again.” Kagome hadn’t revealed her past to any of them, so they were in shock. They continued walking as they thought about what she told them.
“Kagome.” Inuyasha whispered.
“Where were you born? Why did you leave there?” Sango asked.
“I was born a few towns west of the town we’re heading to now. I grew up there but shortly after I turned 18, I left. The memories from that town were way too painful to stay.” Kagome told them. Her voice and face went hard on the last part.
Everyone became silent. They all were wondering what had happened to her but no one wanted to ask and upset her. Inuyasha never realized how much Kagome had been through in her life. She was a lot like him in some ways. But totally different in others. That’s what made her so perfect for him. They could sympathize with each other to a degree.
Kagome wanted to cry at the thought of her old home town. She resisted this urge. She instead just nuzzled into Inuyasha’s back. Inuyasha felt this and grinned. He knew she was a little upset so he just lightly squeezed her thighs to try and let her know that it was okay.
Kagome felt his squeeze and also grinned. She felt so safe and secure when he held her. She never wanted him to let go of her.
Sango’s mind was swirling. She wondered what had happened to her friend back then. Kirara could sense Sango’s restlessness and nestled her face into Sango’s cheek. She petted the cats on the head and then looked over to her loving monk and he looked back. Miroku was thinking the same thing as Sango. He smiled at her to try and silently comfort her. Miroku knew she was worried. He took her hand and lightly squeezed. She smiled at him and squeezed back. She did feel better now. They smiled at each other and looked forward on the path.
“Kagome, is that the town you talked about with the old woman?” Inuyasha asked the girl on his back. Kagome lifted her head. When the town came into view, a huge smile graced her lips at the sight of her adoptive home.
“That’s it!” Kagome struggled a little to get off of Inuyasha’s back.
“Kagome stop struggling! I can get you there faster than you ever could! Now calm down!” He told her firmly as he tightened his grip on her. Kagome listened to him and relaxed again.
“Kirara!” Sango said. The fire cat immediately transformed into her larger state. Sango and Miroku hopped onto her back. “Well? What are we waiting for?” Sango stated. Inuyasha grinned in her direction. Inuyasha took off at a run and Kirara followed.
‘I can’t wait to see her again! I’m on my way Kaede!’ Kagome thought excitedly.
