Chapter 10 The Present

Kagome and Inuyasha left the house and started walking. Neither of them knew where they were headed, but they just enjoyed being alone together. They walked out into the forest to get a little more privacy. As they got well into the trees of the forest, Kagome looked at Inuyasha. He was walking with his arms crossed and his eyes closed. She smiled as she thought about what she had been planning to do.

‘Maybe he’ll accept it, accept me.’ Kagome thought to herself.

“Inuyasha, can I ask you something?” She asked the hanyou walking with her.

“What do you need to ask me?” Inuyasha asked back as he opened his eyes to look at her. Kagome stopped walking and turned to him. She almost had tears in her eyes. “What’s the matter? Did I do something wrong?” He asked in an almost frantic way.

“No it’s not you. I-I I just…” She stuttered as the tears began to flow. “I just remembered a story my parents used to tell me.” She said to him. The tears started to really flow and she felt like her legs were going to give out. She slowly walked over to a fallen tree, careful not to fall, and sat on it.

Inuyasha was worried. He walked over to where she was and sat next to her. “What story Kagome? Why does it make you cry?” Inuyasha asked her.

“No, the story doesn’t make me cry.” She said giggling between sobs. Inuyasha smiled at her when she giggled and whipped the tears off her cheeks with his thumb.

“Okay, well this is how the story went.” She said as she pushed back her weeping. “My parents would always tell me stories of the princess who lived with all of the other town’s people. They didn’t know she was princess and mocked her and taunted her.”Kagome paused and sighed before continuing. “Everyone was so mean to her. She wanted to run away from all the pain but she stood strong and stayed at her home with the ones she loved. When an evil demon kidnapped her and threatened to kill her. A man saved her despite what the entire town said. They fell madly in love with each other and lived happily ever after.” She glanced at Inuyasha to see what his reaction would be. He had a very slight grin at the last part.

This made Kagome happy. He liked the idea of ‘happily ever after.’ Kagome continued. “They always told me that I was just like the princess in the story and that one day, I will find my true love and he will love and protect me. And we would live happily ever after, just like in the story.”

Inuyasha was quiet. He knew he was the man that would protect her and love her for the rest of their lives. The only problem was, would she accept him. He would never hurt her and would always stand by her side if she would let him. “Kagome.” He whispered softly. “What happened to your parents?” He asked her.

Kagome lowered her eyes to the ground. “They were killed.” She said coldly.

“By who?” Inuyasha asked as he tried to comfort her by putting his arm over her shoulder.

“It’s a long story.” Kagome told him.

“I have plenty of time.” He told her with a smile. “I’m here for you. You need to talk to someone about this stuff.” Inuyasha told her kindly.

Kagome smiled back at him. She was happy she could rely on Inuyasha to comfort her when she’s upset. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath of air. She exhaled and began telling Inuyasha her life story.

“Okay, so my life was pretty normal. I had my family, friends, good grades and everything. Everyone thought I had the perfect life, but all I was missing was a love life. It seemed like boys wouldn’t even take a second look at me.” She said as she lowered her head again. Inuyasha saw this and lightly squeezed her shoulder. She raised her head to him and sighed again as she continued. “Well anyways, I kind of had this crush on a wolf demon named Koga.” Inuyasha heard that she had a crush on a wolf demon and his heart tightened in his chest. He felt like he could never compare to a full demon. His thoughts stopped when she continued again.

“He knew I did too. He asked me to the dance we called the prom and I was so excited. We had a great time at the dance and then we went to a nearby park to get a little privacy.” Inuyasha chest felt so tight that he couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t stand hearing her talk about another male like this. “But everything went wrong.” Inuyasha’s ears perked up. Kagome started to tear up again. “He-he had one of the other wolf demons grab hold of me so he could take me.” She said as tears fell down her cheeks. Inuyasha was furious that a male tried to take his Kagome without her permission.

Inuyasha looked into her weeping eyes. They weren’t their normal melted chocolate color, they were a stormy gray color. His instincts kicked in and he pulled her into a hug and nuzzled the top of her head. Letting her cry into his shoulder, he breathed in her magnificent scent. She also breathed in his scent to calm herself. She took deep breaths and slowed her weeps. When she was done crying, Inuyasha let her go.

“Better?” He asked her.

“Yeah.” She whispered with a smile. “Thank you.”

“No problem. Do you wanna tell me the rest of the story or do you wanna wait?” He asked the red eyes girl next to him.

“If you wanna hear it, I can keep going.” Kagome told him.

“Yeah go ahead. So he was a real jerk, huh?” He replied to her.

“More than a jerk. He was the biggest ass I have ever met!” She exclaimed. She laughed lightly and Inuyasha did the same. “Anyways, when he came towards me my miko powers came forward to protect me because I was so scared. The wolf that held me was shocked and thrown to the ground. When I went for Koga, a voice in my head told me I wasn’t a killer. I told him to get lost and I better never see his disgusting face again or he really would be dead meat. He ran away as fast as he could. I was too weak to stand after my powers sparked like that, so I fell to my knees. I sat there for who knows how long. I hardly ever used my miko powers at that time, so it really drained me.” Inuyasha put his arm back around her shoulder.

“When I finally got back up, it was almost sunrise. I walked home and I thought it was over, my nightmare could just go away now. But when I got inside, I was terribly wrong. I found the house destroyed. I ran up the stairs, screaming for my mom and dad. When I got no response, I was terrified. Worse than before at the park. I ran to their room. When I opened the door, I found them. Those filthy wolves standing over my parents bloody bodies. I don’t remember what happened after that. I blacked out. When I came back around, I saw the two wolf demons, which killed my family, lying lifelessly at my feet. I ran to my parents bodies and tried my hardest to save them. But they were already gone. After I made sure they had a proper burial, I left that town. I couldn’t stand to stay there and face the pain from that night.” She said finishing the tragic story. “I miss them so much Inuyasha.” She said with tears in her eyes.

“It’s okay Kagome.” He said pulling her into another hug. “I’m here now. I’ll always be here for you. Forever and for always.” He gently rubbed her back and nuzzled her hair. She squeezed him as hard as she could, then let him go. She faced him and he faced her.

‘That’s all I needed. This is it. I’m really going to give it to him.’ She thought. The butterflies started fluttering in her stomach. She started to slightly shake as she reached into a small pocket inside her shirt.

“Inuyasha if you would please accept this gift I have for you. It’s something from my parents.” She started. “I promised you a gift and I intend to keep my promise.”

“Kagome, I can’t take something your parents left you.” He said. He started to stand but a hand on his wrist stopped him.

“Wait, just hear me out. Please?” Her eyes pleaded to him. He couldn’t deny her when she gave him that look. He sighed and sat back down.

“It’s not just anything my parents left me Inuyasha. It’s this.” She held out a golden necklace with a heart shaped charm dangling down. “If you accept this, we can be together forever.” Inuyasha was amazed at her words. He gave her a confused look. “This necklace was given to my mother from my father when he first told her he loved her. My mother gave it to me and told me to only give it to the one I knew I would spend the rest of my life with. And I think it’s you Inuyasha. If you accept it, that is.” She said as she lowered her eyes from his. Inuyasha took his clawed hand and gently lifted her chin so she had to look into his eyes. They sat there for a moment just melting in the others’ loving gaze.

Inuyasha leaned forward slightly to indicate what he intended. Even though she just told him she loved him, he didn’t want to push any boundaries. Kagome leaned forward to comply with his request. He softly grazed her cheek with his finger tips as he continued to lean closer to his love.

It was like to whole world had disappeared. They were the only ones on the earth. It was as if they were what held each other from just floating into space. They both felt weightless, and at the same time, grounded. Suddenly, nothing that they had thought mattered any more. All that mattered was them being together. “Kagome.” He whispered as he closed the distance between them to kiss her rosy, pink lips. When his lips kissed hers, sparks flew. They shared the warmth of each other’s lips. They came closer to one another. Inuyasha wrapped his arms protectively but gently around Kagome’s waist. She slowly did the same. Inuyasha parted his lips to ask entrance to Kagome’s mouth. Kagome eagerly allowed him to enter. She moved her hands up his waist until her fingers tangled into his silver hair. Her lips parted to allow his tongue entrance into her mouth. His tongue entered and began exploring her mouth and found her tongue. They parted for air for a moment. Both of their heads were spinning. They sat there holding each other for a little while before Inuyasha spoke.

“Kagome. I accept.” He whispered to her.
