Chapter 3: Maine?
Anubis_Himura
Fall 2004

The most gorgeous male in the world. One simple sentence to describe him. I saw him on the porch, half covered in shadow, the only half in the light teasing me - daring me to step closer. Than he emerged. Long shaggy black hair, unkempt, and disheveled. Gorgeous broad shoulders and skateboarder frame. He was wearing an Ezekiel sweater with loose cargo jeans and a pair of black Etnies.

I allowed mother to do the talking. Then he smirked a devilish smirk that said he was so innocent - yet up to no good.

          I melted.

&nbs p;       We followed him behind the main house to a decent cottage.

&nb sp;       "This is it. If something breaks don't hesitate to call me over I'll fix it in a jiff. And if I can't fix it you can use ours till someone does." he clasped his hands together. He was nervous. "We have two copies of the key. We'll keep one in case you get locked out and you can have one. You can make another copy so you both can have one, just let us know if you give copies to anyone other than yourselves." he handed my mother a key. "I'll go get your luggage." he smiled and turned to head to the car.

  & nbsp;      "I . . . I'll help." I was bumbling like a fool.

"No need Miss." he was too polite. Something was wrong with him.

         "Please, name's Kagome." I offered.

"Don't worry Kagome," he emphasized. "I can get it."

"No, really, it's . . " he pulled my suitcase off the roof of the car and fell on his ass. "heavy."

"Thanks for the warning." he grunted from under my heavy suitcase. I started giggling. It was a nervous habit. I reached out for his hand. He accepted and I helped him up.

"Sorry." I replied - smiling as best I could to suppress the laugher.

"How can you wear a sweater in the middle of July?" I asked once he was on his feet.

"Compared to yesterday it's cold." he explained quickly.

"It gets real warm here then?" I prompted.

"Not really. Some days. Wait till August." by now Inuyasha was lugging my heavy trunk across the driveway to my waiting mother.

"Are you sure you don't need help?" I offered again.

"Now, what kind of landlord would I be if I made you do it?" I shrugged off his comment and doubled back to the car for Mothers suitcase.

Just as I pulled it off the roof of the car Inuyasha ran up to me.

"I got it. Go explore or something. Don't worry about a thing." he smiled again and I gave up.

The cottage was cute, beige. The roof looked almost straw. I stepped inside for the first time. The main room, a living room with a step up leading to a kitchen, was painted cloud blue. It had a couch, a TV a stereo and an end table with a phone. The kitchen had a refrigerator of an off white color. The counters were blue tile and there was a small dinning room table just to the right.

;       The doorway to the left led to a small lilac bedroom. The four-poster bed gorgeously decorated with a satin canopy. A large oak dresser rested in the corner opposite the closet.

I walked up the staircase - wooden with a white rail and the wall for support on the other side - to find two more rooms. A brilliantly white tiled bathroom, which housed a stand up washer/dryer combo in the corner. Adjacent to the bathroom was an ebony room with a modern mission bed and a simple cedar dresser.

"Mom," I walked up to her, standing by the window, "Can I have the room downstairs?" I asked as sweetly as I could.

She nodded. She was obviously in deep thought so I left.

"Where should I put these?" Inuyasha asked, referring to the suitcases.

"Lucky you. The heavy one stays downstairs." I gave a halfhearted smile.

"Awesome." he lugged the suitcase in to my room and placed it at the edge of the bed. "The water runs hot to warn you. Your phone should be hooked up on Monday. I am not really sure about that. I think you have cable. If not I have plenty of movies you can borrow." we had moved into the living room during his explanation.

The way he spoke seemed almost flirtatious and I hoped he was being flirting. Being out of the suns light I realized it was actually cold up here. Much colder than L.A. I involuntarily shivered and me cream flesh was engulfed in Goosebumps.

"Maine's like that." Inuyasha said. I looked at him questioningly. "The weather." he nodded toward my prickled flesh. "It goes hot to cold. You don't like Maine weather? Wait five minutes, it'll change. That's what people say up here." he smiled to me. "Thermostats by the stairs. Sometimes the pilot light goes out. Just call me over, I can fix it." I smiled not wanting to ruin the quiet movement with my bumbling. I did anyway.

"So, what do kids do for fun around here?"

"Feh." he shrugged, "I hang out at the skate park. There's some kids that hang around the 'Big Apple'. Other than that, I don't know."

"Cool." I didn't know what else to say.

We stood in a semi-awkward silence until my mother came downstairs.

"So, where can we buy groceries?" she asked smiling brightly.

"Oh. Hannaford in Wells is always popular." we looked at him skeptically.

"Oh. Right. You don't know where that is. I can go with you, if you want."

"Oh, you don't have to. I am sure you're busy." I looked pointedly at mother but knew it was useless. She had a plan.

"Nonsense Kagome. He offered. We'd love the help." she put her hands on my shoulders and smiled warmly.

"No problem. I'll leave my Father a note and we can go when you want."

"Okay." the smile never faded from my Mothers face and I sighed hopelessly.

~*~ Inuyasha's POV ~

"Okay, take a left at this light." I pointed to the lane closest the gas station so she would know to be in the correct one. She, however, was already in that lane and halfway through the turn by the time I spat out the directions. "Remarkable intuition."

"Oh, thank you child." Kagomes mother gave Kagome a sideways glance, which I wrote off. "I'm assuming I now take this road on the right, with the sign that says 'Hannaford'?"

"Yes, you do." I chuckled a bit to myself.

"Brilliant." Kagome shook her head and I am sure she rolled her eyes.

We shopped for quite some time, but it was fun to do it with company. Normally I would have to grocery shop by myself, seeing as how my dad doesn't. I picked up a few things for our house while I had the chance. I explained that my dad 'didn't have time' to go grocery shopping and that is why I did it. Mrs. H then offered to go with me every time. I really like her, she is a nice lady; and her daughter . . . .

My thoughts were interrupted when I accidentally ran into Kagome.

"Sorry, sorry. My fault." I apologized quickly, "Are you all right?"

"Yeah, I am fine. Don't worry." she smiled at me and I relaxed.

         "Mum?" Kagome asked,

"Hmm?" she was busy reading the back of a package for nutritional value.

"Are we almost done?" she nearly whispered the question. Maybe she didn't like being in my company?

"Nearly darling. Why don't you and Inuyasha go look for some pie crusts for me okay?"

"Yes Mamma." Kagome wandered into the main isle, completely lost on where to go. I smiled at her and she gave me a look I can't quite define.

"This way Kagome." I began leading her through a maze of isles, trying to annoy her. Something about watching her chew her bottom lip in annoyance was, fun.

"Inuyasha." she stopped and I turned around to see what she was looking at. "Found them." she declared, picking up the box from the open freezer compartment.

"Oh, great." I plastered on a smile and walked back to her.

"Now we can go find my Mom and get out of here." Kagome turned on her heels and began walking the way we had come.

"Is my presence offending you in some way? So bad so that you want to leave this quickly?" I asked, trying to sound upset about the whole thing.

"No." she stopped and looked at me. Her voice sounded surprised. "I didn't mean it in that way. I am sorry if I upset you Inuyasha. You're being really kind. I know that on a nice summer day like this there are thousands of things you could be doing rather than help your new tenants grocery shop. Thank you so much. I'm just really hungry." I started laughing. I don't know why, I just did. She blushed profusely and looked away shyly.

"I am sorry I don't mean to laugh. I just thought you hated the fact that I came along. Truth be told, I can't stand summer. I love the cold and wish I could go snowboarding."

"I love snowboarding!" Kagome jumped excitedly. "We lived in Aspen a year ago and the guy that worked at the mountain was our neighbor and he taught me and I love it! I tried skateboarding but I really suck. Snow is so much better."

"I thought you lived in L.A?" I didn't mean to pry, I was just confused now.

"We did. I've lived in forty different states over the last nine years." she explained.

"Holy shit! I've lived in the same house since I was born."

"Yeah? We haven't found a state we like yet." she found her mother as we walked and we picked up our pace to catch up.

"That's just crazy." I shook my head to emphasize my point.

"Yeah, isn't it?" she didn't seem to want to talk about it anymore. "Mom, we found them. Hope they are the right kind, they had like eighty."

         "That is lovely dear."

We checked out and loaded the groceries into the car. Mrs. Higarashi made a comment on how they wouldn't be hungry for a while and Kagome rolled her eyes at the apparently 'stupid' comment.

The trip back was semi-quite. The sound of WCYY filled the car and I tuned out to most of the other noises, getting lost in some of my favorite artists. It wasn't until I saw our driveway coming into view that I came back to reality.

"Wow, you really do have a great intuition. Or memory."

"Yes, I guess I do." Ms. Higarashi laughed airily.

I helped to unload the groceries, and put them away.

"Oh, you two kids need to have some fun. Or are you tired Kagome?"

"It's been a long drive." Kagome complained. But her voice wasn't whiny, so the complaint didn't sound as 'complainish'. It was more of a statement.

"I have a paper I actually have to work on too." I explained.

"A paper?" Kagome looked at me with varying amounts of confusion. "Its the middle of July."

"I'm in Honors History, Honors English, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Advanced Math. I have a summer work load longer than . . . my summer." I laughed it off, but I really did have mountains of work to be doing.

"Oh. What is the paper on?" Kagome seemed generally curious.

"Which one?" I smiled, "The one I really need to work on is a paper for English; on 'five books I have read this summer, in relation to the decline of child longevity and prosperity due to the inclination of War among third world countries.'" Try saying that three times fast.

"Wow. That sounds harder than the one I had to write last year for my Honors English. It was based on the book War and Peace but we had to discuss modern society, in relation to teen angst, to the depth of the book. Or we could read Malcolm X and discuss his impact on our culture. Either way though, we had to read both books." And she's smart. I smiled to myself. I'd been smiling a lot these past few hours.

"Do you want some help?" the question was barely vocalized and I had to compose a full sentence.

"Sure. Well, no, I mean you don't have to waste your time. I can introduce you to some of my friends tomorrow, if you want, then you'll have something to do. Really, you don't want to be stuck inside writing reports." I hope it didn't sound like I was pushing her away, but truth be told, I was really shy around girls.

"Oh. Well, I don't mind, so if you need help I'm here." she looked kind of sad. I didn't know what else to say.

"Okay." this seemed to end our conversation for the day. "If you two need anything, I'll be here." I started walking backwards toward the house. "Bye." I waved slightly, feeling like a complete dork, and then turned and ran for my room.

So . . . those are our tenants? Summer might not be so bad after all.
