Chapter 6: Summer Days
Anubis_himura

~*~ Inus POV ~*~

We went to the beach today. We felt like swimming and being generally close to the water. Of course, Miroku just felt like seeing a bunch of girls in bikinis (for which he got a few healthy smacks to the head). Kouga and Kikyou had a slight spat on the way to the beach (So I heard), at one point Kouga was an 'insensitive jerk' with a 'greasy slim ball attitude, only matched by his greasy hair'. Then Kikyou was a 'selfish bitch wench' with a 'heartless personality'. Needless to say, they broke up by the end of the car ride.

I liked being there with Kagome. She had never been to a beach on the East Coast. I also liked that she didn't flaunt her body like all my other friends who are girls. Not to say I don't like them, or that I often talk about them behind their backs. It's just that, they seem to be competing with everyone else, over who has the best body. Silently of course. Kikyou was playing the 'distressed damsel' today. Her and I dated once and after we agreed not to see each other anymore, she went for Kouga. I didn't mind so much, as hate the idea. Now that they had broken up, she was sunbathing precariously close to me, and seemed to be flaring about with every thing she had. She was pretty, so I didn't quite mind that she was showing off her stuff. But at the same time it irked me in ways I can't explain.

Kagome was wearing shorts and a tank top. She wasn't flaunting, but she wasn't hiding. I admired that.

"Come on Yash. We're playing volley." I looked at my watch. I had to be to work in two hours.

"Okay, but only a quick one, I have to go to work." I got up and followed Kouga to the 'volleyball court' (which was actually a line in the sand that Miroku had drawn with his foot).

"I call team Captain." Kouga announced, much like he were proclaiming he had won some great prize. "Yash, be the other captain. It wouldn't be fair if the two best players were on the same team." he tossed me the volley ball. I caught it and stood next to him.

"Want to pick first?" I asked him.

"Sure. All right," he pretended to be thinking hard. If I knew him, he had his whole team picked out all ready. "Kagome." Yep.

Kagome made her way to stand next to him. I knew Miroku was a good player, and Sango could kick any ones butt, but this was a little bit of payback.

"Kikyou."

"Miroku." he challenged me.

"Sango." challenge accepted.

"Matt."

"David."

"Kyle."

"Koh aku." we were running out of players, but I knew Kohaku would play better against his sister and I couldn't take that chance.

"Shippo."

"Well since I'm the only one left." Shippo made his way over to the other team.

"Since you guys have one less player you can serve first." Kouga walked over to the other side of the line and stood front and center. Kagome fell into line behind him and to his left.

I started the serves so I stood in the back right corner. I served a perfect serve which Kagome knocked to Kouga.

"Hey Kouga, do we have to volley three times before we can send it back over?"

"Nah. This is Mainer-Beach-Volley. Anything goes." he sounded as though this were war. Kagome shrugged and continued playing.

As the ball went over the 'net' for the fifth time, perfectly, Sango did something I will forever love her for. "Hey Miroku sweetie, do you think that my left breast is bigger than my right one?" she hit the ball over the 'net' and Miroku missed.

"I love you Sango." I high fived her and I prepared to serve again.

"That's playing dirty!" Kouga shouted, "You know Miroku's a lech!"

"Yeah, but I love him."

"Tricky Sango. Tricky." Miroku called from where he was. "I will not fall into such a clever trap again."

"We'll see."

The game continued. My team was doing pretty well. Sango was competitive, and that helped a lot, and even Kohaku had his good points. Kikyou, on the other hand, was a waste of space.

"You could try to hit the ball when it comes near you." I growled from next to her.

"And ruin my nails?"

"Then why are you playing?" my voice rose slightly but I tried to keep my temper under control. It was just a game.

"Why, because you asked me to." she smiled a dazzling smile and I almost forgot that we were still playing.

The ball came close to contact and I knocked it over, purely out of reflex rather than skill.

"Hey Yash" Kagome called.

"I am not falling for a stupid trick Kag. Better luck next time." I stayed focus, determined to show Kouga I could beat him at anything. He was one of my best friends, yet I always had to prove I could beat him. It was weird.

"I was just going to tell you, that you are late for work. You have to be there at four right? It's four ten."

"What?!" I looked at my watch and the ball hit me in the head.

"My point." Kouga was still as smug as ever but I ignored it.

"I have to go. Tell my dad will ya Kags?" I gathered my beach towel and my shirt. I slipped the shirt over my head and gave everyone a smile. "Good game guys. Rematch, next week? Later." I ran up the beach and got into my car. Okay, so it wasn't my car so much as my dads beat up old Pontiac, but I fixed it and at least it got a sticker (from some shady guy in Shapleigh. But that's beside the point).

~*~ Kags POV ~*~

"That was fun." I declared as I sat down on the warm sand. It had cooled off since we started playing, but it was still an okay temperature. "School starts in two weeks. I can't believe the summer is almost over." I wasn't really talking to anyone, but they seemed to be listening.

"Yeah. Summers always go by so fast." Sango was now sitting next to me, agreeing with what I said.

"We shouldn't let that stop us from having while it's here though." Miroku piped in.

"True." I nodded.

"So, what happened between Captain Psycho and Ms. Prissy?" Sango asked, motioning toward Kouga and Kikyou.

"Oh, that's right, you weren't in the car." I sat up and started to tell Sango about the ride over. "Well, Kikyou called Kouga something to the effect of 'insensitive jerk' then Kouga went all ballistic and called her a 'selfish wench bitch' or something. So yeah, they broke up. I meant to ask you guys a while ago, why do you call them names when they are like your best friends?"

"I don't know." Sango shrugged, Miroku was no longer paying attention to either of us. "We just always have. I think it's because in the third grade, Kikyou stole my lunch money and Kouga beat Yash up for defending me. See they were always together, Kik and Kouga. So Yash and Kouga have always had this 'I'm going to be better than you' thing between them. But in the seventh grade we all realized we were outcasts and so, we just became friends. I still want to claw out Kiks eyes sometimes, but she is okay. And Kouga has his good qualities."

"And what part does Miroku play?" I asked, noticing he wasn't in Sango's child recollection.

"Oh. He came in during our eighth grade year. We all thought he was a dirty pervert, because he is. But he added fun to the group and dare I say personality. We loved him." Sango ruffled Mirokus hair and he shot her a playfully evil look. "Then freshmen year he asked me to homecoming and I said 'no' because he was a dirty perv. Then he asked me to snow ball and I said 'no'. Then finally he asked me to Spring formal and I just couldn't resist him anymore. We've been an 'item' ever since." Miroku put his arm around Sango at this point, as though emphasizing her claim.

I smiled at them, they were really cute together. "What about David, Matt, Kohaku, Shippo, Kyle?"

"David, Matt, and Kyle went to the same all boys boarding school until last year. When they all transferred here we decided they were pretty cool. We still aren't like 'best friends' but that's not to say we don't like them. Kohaku, as you know, is my little brother, and Shippo is just his friend. We do feel though, that as their elders we should teach them and guide them. So we hang out with them and try to build up their rep."

"Sounds great. I wish I had friends that I had known since third grade, and best friends that I had never been without."

"How many times have you moved?"

"In my life?" I asked, trying to quickly count in my head.

"Sure."

"Forty seven." I saw the look of shock.

"Seven with both my parents, forty with just my mom. I've lived in forty states in nine years."

"Holy shit." Sango stared out toward the never ending ocean. I followed her gaze until a voice interrupted.

"Kags. Sorry I have to go. Do you want me to give you a ride back?" Kouga was standing over us, which was nice because he was inadvertently blocking the sun.

"Uh, sure."

"It's okay Kags. If you want to hang out some more we can give you a ride." Miroku offered.

"Thanks. Sure. Sorry Kouga. Thank you though."

"No problem. Come on Kik."

"What I don't get a choice?" she began gathering her belongings anyway.

"Just come on will ya?"

"Bye guys." She waved to us and we all waved back.

"Bye Kik, say hi to the underworld for me." Sango smiled, waving dramatically.

"Oh, did you get the message? There's a seat ready and reserved for you, maybe you should drop by early."

"Bitch." Sango still waved, even as Kikyou walked up the beach.

"Slut." she called back.

"Love ya!" Sango yelled.

"You too!" she stopped waving and obediently followed Kouga.

"See, it's mutual." Sango laughed.

"Sango, I wanna go. I'm tired." Kohaku complained.

"Yeah, we got to go too." Matt spoke up. I had almost forgotten they were there.

"Okay. Come on Kohaku, Shippo and Kags. Hope you like sitting with two other boys." Sango smiled sweetly.

"Sure."

"Bye guys. Kyle, give me back my keys." Matt ran after Kyle, David following close behind, and Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Kohaku and I all walked to Mirokus car.

"Bye." I got out of the car (I could have walked home from the beach if I wanted to, it was only about a mile). "See you later." I watched the car fade from view before heading into the house.

"Hi mo- you're not here." I observed, seeing as how the house was empty and I noted there was no car in the front yard. Not even Mr. W was around.

I poured a glass of apple juice and sat down on the couch. I was actually quite tired from playing three hours of volley ball right after two hours of tackle football. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

~*~ Inus POV ~*~

Work sucked. We got bombarded with four tour busses and a cruise boat. When I finally punched out I thanked my lucky stars I didn't have to walk home. Not that it was a terribly long walk from Wells to my house; I was just glad I had a car. I took my cap off and started the car. It was getting dark and I had to be home by ten thirty, even though dad knew I was at work. He has a theory that every kid in America out past ten is doing drugs. I turned on the stereo and realized a mix tape was in it. Kagome had left it in the car earlier that week.

It was hard to tell my feelings for her. I knew she was a great person to hang around with, but could we have become best friends in two weeks? Kouga had a thing for her, and he was only playing around with Kikyou to make Kagome jealous. Though, I guess he did kind of like Kikyou before Kagome came along. I think I am jealous that he likes Kagome. Or Kikyou?

I shook my head, erasing the thoughts from my mind. I hope Kagome got home okay. Of course she did. It's only a mile home from the beach, so even if she did get stranded she could've walked.

Great, dads buddies are over. I hope they aren't being too noisy. I parked next to the garage and turned off the car. I wasn't actually allowed to park in the garage because dad keeps his snow blower, shovel, snowmobile, rake, things like that in it. Oh, and his car. Not that I mind. I walked into the house, being as quiet as I could. I knew I had to get up the stairs though, and they were in the living room, so I would be found out eventually. I walked passed him and his buddies, seemingly unnoticed, and into my room.

My room had a giant piece of sheetrock blocking out nature. My dad hadn't officially fixed it yet, but it was good enough for now. I would probably fix it once work let up and I had some spare time. All my time was devoted to work and my friends - now that all my summer homework was finished. That reminds me. I have to work a double tomorrow. I shed my shirt and pants, preferring to sleep in my boxers. I set the alarm for six and fell asleep almost instantly.

~*~ Kagomes POV ~*~

"Summer's . . . over." I was complaining to Sango. The boys were busy doing flips on their skateboards and being boys in general. Sango and I had taken refuge in the woods.

"Eh, there's always next summer." Sango laid her head against a tree, smiling up at the sky.

"So are Kouga and Kik officially over?" I asked, making small talk, and trying to get some information.

"Yep. Kik said Kouga was the most desensitized person in the world, and rumor has it he called her a C U Next Tuesday, so they're definitely over. Why?" she sat up, glaring at me. "You like him don't ya?"

"No!" the way I reacted gave me away. "He's a nice kid. He's okay. I don't know." I sighed, looking down to watch a blade of grass sway in the wind.

"I bet he likes you." Sango continued.

"That's the problem."

"Why is that a problem?"

"Because, I kind of like Yash. I think. I don't know! I feel so blah about it all. I just want to give up on boys." I rolled my eyes. I knew at this point I was being much too dramatic.

"Tell ya what." she put her arm around my shoulder, "I'll ditch Miroku and we can both give up on 'em."

"Really? You'd do that?"

She looked at me for a second and then tilted her head upward, as though thinking, "No. But, I will buy ya an ice cream." I laughed, she was truly one of the best friends I had ever had. In fact, she was the only best friend I had ever had.

"Deal." We stood up together, her arm still draped around my shoulders.

"Lets go." we walked back to the boys.

When we got there Miroku looked over at us, noticing our closeness he smiled. "Can I watch?" he winked at us and Sango nearly beat him to the ground.

"NO! You pervert!" she then turned to the rest of the group with big doe eyes, "We are going over to Dairy Queen, anybody else want to come?"

"Sure." the group collectively followed.

"Let's walk." Sango suggested. The group shrugged, leaving their gear in their cars and continuing on foot.

We walked up the giant hill in back of the apartments and down Park street. We then took a left and walked across the bridge over to Dairy Queen. The walk took no more than twelve minutes.

We all ordered our ice cream and sat down on the benches outside, watching people walk by. Inuyasha had all ready left for work, he had to work from noon to six today. I didn't like that he had to work so much, but it did give me a chance to hang out with his friends and get to know them. Then I felt like I was mooching off his friends, but how was I suppose to make any of my own? I didn't have a job, and I didn't know where kids hung out around here. His friends were very accepting though, and over the passed month, I began feeling accepted.

"Come on Kags. Eat while we walk back." Kikyou was leading the way back to the skate park. We took Depot street this time, because the hill was murder to climb down.

"Hey Kagome," I turned around and realized Kouga was walking behind me.

"Hey." I slowed down for him to catch up and then we continued at a reasonable pace.

"Is Yash going to be bringing you to school?" he asked. It was a simple question, but I didn't have the answer.

"I don't know." I shrugged.

"Cause, I can give you a ride."

"No, I couldn't ask you to do that. I mean, it's way too far out of your way."

"No, it's really not."

"Yes, you have to go practically into the port and you live on Summer Street. I couldn't ask you to."

"But you didn't ask me to. I want to." I sighed. He wasn't going to give up.

"Okay. Just like once though, I'll feel really bad if you do it all the time." I tried to smile, showing him that I appreciated the thought.

"Fine, fine."

Kouga gave me a ride home from the skate park that day. When we pulled up to Inuyashas house I waved good bye.

"Kagome, I'll be here about seven in the morning." I nodded, showing I understood. "Don't be late."

"I won't."

"Seven in the morning."

"Okay."

"Don't be late." he repeated. I knew he was joking now.

"I Won't!" he laughed and I punched him in the arm. "Bye." I got out of the car, and closed the door. He rolled the window down.

"That's seven."

"Shut up!" I turned and began walking in the house.

"In the morning." he called out.

"Go away!"

"Bye Kagome!"

"Bye Kouga." I waved goodbye from the door and rolled my eyes.
