“Dead as dead can be,” my doctor tells me
But I just can't believe him, never the optimistic one
But I just can't believe him, never the optimistic one
Inuyasha stood over Kikyo's ransacked gravesite. He stared coldly at it. There may have been a time when Inuyasha really did love Kikyo, but nowadays he wasn't so sure he loved her any more. Back when she had been living, and not the clay doll she was now, she hadn't made him happy. He just went back to see her time after time because she was one of the few that didn't run or scream in fear, or try to eat him. He sighed and his ears twitched. He turned slightly to see Kikyo, her back facing him as her emotionless face tilted toward the sky.
“This day has been a long way coming, Inuyasha.” she said quietly. Inuyasha scowled. He knew what she was talking about. After glancing at the stars, he nodded. It was three years into their journey, and Inuyasha was becoming increasingly close to Kagome. Kikyo wanted him to choose. “You should choose wisely, Inuyasha.”
I'm sure of your ability to become my perfect enemy
Wake up and face me, don't play dead cause maybe
“I'm sure I will.” he snapped at her. Crossing his arms carefully, he looked at her back. “Why don't you face me?”
“Because, Inuyasha, I fear rejection. I do not want to go to hell alone. You deserve to be there with me.” Her voice was cold... emotionless.
Inuyasha growled. “I don't deserve to go to hell, Kikyo. I deserve a longer life. Hell, maybe I deserve someone as good as Kagome.” Even he didn't believe the last statement he made. He had never believed himself worthy of Kagome's touch, caring, or, heaven forbid, love.
“You are not the judge of that, Inuyasha.”
He frowned. “I know that.” he said. Silence reigned for a few moments. Inuyasha spoke first, “Maybe you're better of this way, Kikyo. Maybe you should stay dead, and go to hell alone... You know I'll end up following you in a few years. Even hanyous don't live forever.” He looked at the ground at this sentence. He may not live forever, but he would outlive both Kikyo and Kagome, no matter whether they were zombies or among the living.
Someday I will walk away and say, “You disappoint me,”
Maybe you're better off this way
“You have chosen then.” she said quietly. Inuyasha nodded. Kikyo turned to face him, raising her bow to aim an arrow at his chest. “You disappoint me, Inuyasha.” she told him. “I would have thought you were stronger. I thought you would be able to resist that harpy that holds my face.”
Inuyasha snarled at her and took a defensive pose, his feet spreading slightly. “Kagome is so much different from you, Kikyo.” he spat. “For one, she would never drag me to hell on an empty promise.” He growled slightly and cracked his knuckles. “And besides, you disappoint me as well. I would have thought you would take rejection gracefully. You gave it out easily.”
Leaning over you here, cold and catatonic
I catch a brief reflection of what you could and might have been
Kikyo shot the arrow, but Inuyasha ducked and it hit a tree behind him with a dull thud. He stood carefully, keeping his gaze locked on hers. She had loaded the bow again. “Just go to hell peacefully, Kikyo. You're a miko. We had our time together, now it's time for me to take care of Kagome. You had your chance. You didn't trust me.”
“How was I supposed to, Inuyasha?” She shot another arrow, but Inuyasha dodged that one as well. “You were an untrustworthy demon. I couldn't be sure that you were conning me the entire time.” She let another arrow fly, but Inuyasha leapt over it and came to perch in a tree nearby.
“If you had truly loved me, than you would have known that I could never hurt you.” he said with a growl. He lunged at her and tackled her to the ground. He pinned her by her shoulders. Kikyo stared up at him and he had a flashback to one of the times they had been wrestling through the leaves on a hill near the village. Kikyo had been laughing merrily, staring up into his eyes and sighing. They had kissed... He blinked at the image of the giggling Kikyo disappeared, replaced with her cold features.
It's your right and your ability
tobecome…my perfect enemy…
With one quick strike, Inuyasha tore her head from her shoulders. Her head stared back at him, rolling to a stop near the center of the clearing. “I thought you could never hurt me, Inuyasha.” she whispered.
“You're not Kikyo.” he said sternly. “You're the copy.” Kikyo's eyes closed and a dark wind blew past them, throwing Inuyasha's hair back as he stood. The firm form Kikyo had turned back into ashes and drifted away with the wind. “Goodbye, Kikyo...” he said to the wind. He could have sworn he felt two lips press to his cheek, a hand caressing the other. His ears twitched and he turned back toward camp.
