Chapter 1: Middle School

Students filed in to the class when the first bell rung. All the windows were open due to the tiny fact that the temperature was in the eighties when it was only May. The school code didn't allow water bottles until June, which Higurashi Kagome---along with many others----found ridiculous. The short black haired girl walked in to the room and took her seat. Her sapphire eyes caught sight of the thin silvered hair hanyou sitting all the way in the back. She sighed and sat down. The girl besides Kagome scribbled down something on a piece of paper and tossed it to Kagome. She looked at the brown haired girl who winked before she caught the note and read it.

'Wanna come to the mall after school?' -Sango

Kagome smiled, fished out a pencil from her pocket and quickly wrote her reply. She waited until Mitau-sensei turned her back to throw the note back at Sango.
'Sure' -Kagome

Once it was back in Sango's hands she nodded and they went back to paying attention to the class. In the back, the hanyou yawned loudly. Science always bored him to death. It was pointless. Honestly, who cared if dinosaurs lived millions of years ago? It was the twenty-first century for heaven's sake. Tsuroka InuYasha didn't mind the room through. He liked it and no one bothered him because his lab desk was towards the back of the room. Everybody tolerated science for two reasons. One, The teacher was nice and two, the room had air conditioner.

After what seemed hours the teacher stopped talking and started to hand out a pamphlet. Mitau-sensei gave each student a packet and went back to the board. She turned around and smiled lightly

”Well, as you know your finals are coming up. Of course, before that we've got the final project which, my dear students, will count as fifty percent of your grade. So, you better do a good job on it otherwise I assure you, you will not pass my class.” She was rewarded with several rounds of groans. She smiled.

"Okay, as you know we've been studying the different time periods of Earth. Now, I haven't assigned partners, but we'll choose out of these hats” She held two baseball caps in her hands. “All of your names are in it and I will draw out the partners. The blue hat has half of the class' name while the black hat has the other half. Once you have your partners you can discuss what you will do. You and your partner will be assigned a specific environment of your time. Meaning, one will do land animals and the other will do water animals. Blue hat and black hat respectively. You will put your two parts together to make a presentation that I want on a poster board. Also, I want a ten page report, five pages per part. Also, I want a 3-D model of a creature of your time. Now, let's assign partners.”

Kagome sighed loudly, not really wanting to end up with a bad partner. Most of the students in the class were lazy and then the whole project would be on her shoulders. She was snapped out of her reverie when Sango slapped her shoulder. Kagome turned her head as Sango gave her a small smile.

“I'm sorry Kags,” Sango whispered. Kagome blinked, puzzled by the apology.

“For what?”

The other girl signed dramatically. “You got stuck with InuYasha!”

It slowly dawned on Kagome that InuYasha was her partner. “Wh-What?”

“InuYasha.” Sango shrugged. “He's your partner.”

Kagome sighed and turned back to look at the most hated boy in the whole school. She rolled her eyes. He probably wasn't as bad as everyone said, right?

Mitau-sensei started to talk again. "I expect these projects in three weeks. You will have class time next week. Work hard and divide the project. If you do the project in the morning, don't you dare give it to me. Ten points off for every day it's late. Go on, work!”

The class went to work. Kagome go up and walked over to where InuYasha was, she sat down and spoke up "Ok, so what are we going to do?"

InuYasha stared at her with his amber eyes. They boy was skinny and none of the girls liked him nor did he have friends because he was a hanyou. The discrimination against him was cruel and harsh. Everyone pointed at him, laughed at him, and no one dared speak to him. Kagome winced.

`It must be so difficult for him…to go through all that humiliation,' She thought.

"Well, you do the land and I'll do the sea. Once we're done we can put it on a poster in class" InuYasha stated `as-a-matter-a-factly.'

"What about the 3-D thing?"

"Feh, I don't know."

Before Kagome could speak the bell rang for lunch. InuYasha got up and Kagome's arm shot out to stop him. He looked down on her and she smiled sweetly.

"You could come over to my house after school if you want" Kagome offered. His reluctance was a tangible thing, but he sighed.

"Whatever, I'll be there around 3:30" InuYasha said, taking his wrist from Kagome's grasp. He grabbed his stuff and left, not once looking back at her. When Kagome arrived at the cafeteria Sango was already sitting at the table with Rin. Kagome came and sat down.

"So, how's working with InuYasha?" asked Rin with a giggle. Kagome set down her tray and sighed.

“He's quiet and he's a little harsh when he talks.” Kagome poked at her food, thinking about a certain golden eyed boy. “I like his eyes.”

Rin chocked on her drink. She tossed her black hair over her shoulders and her chocolate eyes stared at her friend incredulously. “You've got to be kidding me! InuYasha's eyes? He-He's hanyou…he's---”

“Treated very badly if you ask me,” Kagome pushed back her tray and stood up. “If you'll excuse me, I'm going to the library.”

She left Sango and Rin with wide-eyed expressions. What was wrong with Kagome?

Kagome sat in her room quietly. The full moon glowed bright in the sky as she turned her head to look out the window. InuYasha had arrived just as he promised. Souta, her younger brother, had taken a liking to InuYasha almost instantly. They had worked awkwardly for a while, but afterwards…

InuYasha had talked to her, told her he had a mother and a father. He had an older half brother named Sesshoumaru. Kagome had dared to ask why he didn't have any friends and InuYasha had snapped at her. The anger inside was evident and he had pulled on his ears, yelling about how they marked him as a hanyou…marked him as worthless.

“But you're not worthless…” Kagome said softly. He growled at her and sat back down. “I don't think so…I-I wanna be your friend.” His golden eyes looked up at her and he blinked in confusion.

He had agreed, but when he left he had turned around and changed his mind.

“You know, I don't think we should be friends. Don't take it personally, I just don't just nobody. I've lived my life so far alone and I highly doubt you can change everyone. It's all against you and I don't want you to loose your friends.”

Why had his words stung her? She hugged her pillow close to her chest. The seventh grader rolled on her bed and sighed, her mind drifting to InuYasha. He was sweet although he was rough around the edges. Her eyes fluttered closed. Maybe she could talk to him in the morning.

Two weeks later they presented the project, they both got an A+ for it. After their `fight' in Kagome's house, he avoided her at all costs. Even after they presented, he ran with his youkai speed out of the class room. Kagome sighed loudly as she cleaned out her locker. She was loosing all her friends for the summer. Rin was going to England while Sango was going to America. The rest of her friends were also going traveling and she was left alone in Tokyo. She packed her stuff and started for her friends.

"Bye Sango, Rin" She said as she hugged them both. She ran out of the class and found InuYasha at his locker. She blinked as his ears twitched in her direction. He leaned back to see her and she smiled at him. Slowly, she walked over to him. He felt like a deer caught in headlights. He couldn't run. She had trapped him. He felt her arms wrap around his torso and her nose bury in his neck.

He was stunned. She had just hugged him. She let him go and smiled brightly at him. “Good bye, InuYasha. Have a good summer.” She leaned up and kissed his cheek softly

She left him with a blush on his cheeks. She giggled and ran from him through the exit. Kagome tried to stop her racing heart on her way home. InuYasha finished cleaning his locker and he sighed. Maybe Kagome Higurashi wasn't so bad after all.

During the long three months, he dropped by her house and was met with Souta. He apologized to Kagome, asking her to be his friend. After that, they went up and down together. He took her on his back, took her to his house, saw her everyday, and made her summer the happiest she had ever been. Kagome felt her heart flutter every time InuYasha heaved her off her feet and soared through the air with her. Kagome sighed as she stared out her window. She grimaced.

`What's wrong with me?' She asked herself. InuYasha made her feel loved and safe, safer than she ever imagined she could feel. Of course, InuYasha had soon been turned in to her best friend. She caught a flash of silver below her and looked down to see InuYasha jump up to her window.

“Hey,” He wiggled his eye brows at her. She giggled softly.

“Hi, InuYasha,” She smiled at him when he entered through the window. He glanced at her before handing her a Hershey's Kiss chocolate. She gently took the chocolate and unwrapped it. She popped it in to her mouth. “I swear, you're trying to make me fat”

He gave her a smirk before snorting. “Feh,”

Kagome watched him sit down on her bed and look at her. How did he manage to make her heart flutter? She blinked and looked away. He was her best friend, dear to her more than anyone. She hoped he would never stop being her friend. The only difference she could tell from him over the summer was that he grew taller. Now he towered over her. Only a few days until school resumed and only two months since she befriended InuYasha and yet it felt so much longer.

When school went in to session, InuYasha walked Kagome to school. Their eighth grade year was supposed to be great. They were graduating and going in to high school next year. They didn't think anything could go wrong in their plan. A new student joined their graduating class. His name was Miroku and he immediately took an interest in Sango. He didn't talk much to Kagome, Rin, or InuYasha. Kagome and InuYasha kept their friendship on a low profile and they decided to slowly bring out in to the light.

However, by November, InuYasha's father decided to ship InuYasha to Italy where he would be staying with his aunt. His father broke the new to him and the now fourteen year old InuYasha couldn't believe his ears. His father knew that Kagome was his only friend, yet he chose to send him away to Italy. Kagome, least to say, was heart broken. Her best friend in the world was going to Italy and leaving her.

“InuYasha,” Kagome turned to look at him. His golden eyes looked at her, sorrow in them. “You know I will always be your best friend.”

He sighed, opening his arms to her. She crawled between his legs, letting him hold her tight. His chin rested on her shoulder and gently nuzzled it. Kagome blinked back her tears.

“I know, Kagome…I know.”

They sat there in silence. The park was almost empty and there were comfortable sitting on the top of the slide. The autumn breeze toyed with her hair, making it tickle his face. She leaned towards him, making him hold her tighter.

“I'll come back,” He said softly. She craned her neck up, daring him to lie to her. “I swear I will. I'll come back for you.”

Kagome's hand rested on his cheek before she let once tear fall down her cheek.

“Then I swear I'll wait for you…”

“Will you?”

“Yes,” She nodded once. “I'll wait for you…I swear I will.”

“Yaoh, Kagome,” Miroku greeted his friend. Kagome arched her eye brow at the boy. The hentai boy gave her a smirk. She rolled her eyes, closing her notebook.

“Hey, Miroku,” She saw Sango walking towards her. Okay, so Kagome was a little more than nervous to be entering high school without InuYasha. She sighed and stood up, brushing some dirty from her tee-shirt. Sango wiggled her eye brows at Kagome and both girls hugged. Tama High School was going to be their school for the next four years. Students took over the front of the school as they began coming for the very first day.

“How was your summer?” Sango asked with a smile. Miroku strolled away with his hands in his pocket, seeing a group of their old middle school friends gather in a big circle.

Kagome giggled. “Boring as hell. I talked to InuYasha a few times, but we can't really get a good connection.”

Sango grimaced, but smiled afterwards. “My summer sucked major ass”

Kagome laughed and turned to see Miroku trying to peer inside the circle. “Hey…what's going on over there?”

Sango turned to see her old friends and shrugged. “I don't know. Let's go see!”

Both girls made their way towards the people. They fought their way in and someone gave Kagome a shove. She sucked in her breath and caught herself.

Her old friend, Mirako, pushed her forward. She stumbled over her feet and fell in to the middle of the circle. She closed her eyes, preparing herself to hit the ground. Instead, her face hit a hard yet soft chest. She felt arms wrap around her body and she slowly looked up at her savior.

She was met with golden eyes. She gasped softly and saw at the boy---man in front of her. She blushed and stood up. The dog ears twitched towards her. A million emotions raced through those golden eyes and she almost fell over. There was only one person in the whole wide world with golden eyes and cute doggy ears. Her lips curled back and made a brilliant smile.

“InuYasha…”
