Twilight would be descending soon and Inuyasha wanted to do something nice for Kagome. Give her something nice.
Inuyasha spotted something perfect across the river.
Quizzical, Kagome watched Inuyasha as he took one giant leap across the river. She seen him bend and pick something up. With another giant leap he was next to her again.
His face was close to her, his amber eyes drawing her in. She thought he was going to kiss her. But as she leaned toward him he put something in between them. As her eyes focused she realized it was a white daisy with five petals that had a small yellow center. He was giving her a flower?
Inuyasha had never been one for romantic innuendos. But this was one of the sweetest things Kagome had ever been lucky enough to encounter. She kissed his cheek and tucked took the flower, tucking it behind her ear.
Inuyasha turned abruptly, still sitting near her. Her kiss that she gave him was not even on his lips. But something tugged at his heart, an emotion that was indefinable.
But he had to admit he liked the small sweet kiss and the feeling it brought with it. And Kagome looked so pretty, the flower tucked behind her era gave her a warm, exotic look. He knew that flower was right for her the moment he seen it. Soft and sweet, yet holding a subtle almost secret beauty.
He longed to taste her lips again. But he knew that if he did he may not want to stop there, she was still weak and he didn't want to hurt her. But once she was better . . . Inuyasha wouldn't think of that now. He was already aching for her again. And the ache wouldn't stop until he satiated himself within her.
Their dinner was finished and both of them ate in silence. Neither of them mentioned what happened in the woods. Kagome wondered if Inuyasha was mad at her for letting her weakness get the best of her.
Inuyasha finished his food quickly, and Kagome found she couldn't eat very much and put her food down. Having been indisposed for so many days must have shrunk her appetite.
Just remembering the feel of his hands and lips on her made her body quiver. Kagome knew that wouldn't be the end of it. They've opened a new door together that would not be closed or forgotten. Things were different now; they would never go back to being just `friends' if that's what they had ever been at all.
Kagome doubted it, though it could be wishful thinking. But he hasn't tried to kiss her again. Does that mean once he sampled her kiss he realized it wasn't worth doing again? Or had her weakness for pain turned him off completely?
Kagome was so obsessed in her thoughts that she hadn't noticed Inuyasha staring at her. Eyes wide she stared back unsure of what to say. She felt silly for thinking he might have heard her thoughts.
Inuyasha gently took her hand in his. Warmth spread though Kagome's arm. His honey-topaz eyes held her almost hypnotically. Slowly, attentively, Inuyasha leaned in to kiss her. Their lips were a hairs breath away when a deep voice cut into their moment.
“Well, well, well. What have we here?”
Inuyasha and Kagome both jerked back and stood. Inuyasha pushed her behind him as though to protect her. “What the hell do you want, Sesshomaru?” Inuyasha growled in question.
Sesshomaru assessed them both with his yellow eyes so much alike and yet unlike Inuyasha's. Kagome tried not to shift under his scrutiny. “I didn't know you've become so intimately familiar with the human girl, Inuyasha.” Kagome had the grace to blush for having been caught, but she would not lower her eyes in shame. “But she's no longer a girl I see, but a woman. You always did have a weakness for humans didn't you, Inuyasha?”
Before Inuyasha could pull out his sword to attack his brother in anger, Kagome spoke. “Where is Ren, Sesshomaru?” she asked not noticing the chipper little girl nearby anywhere. She knew he cared for that little girl and there for allowed her to tag along with him. If Kagome hadn't been paying close attention she would have missed the ever so slight flinch of his eyes.
“She's with a family in a village not far from here. I figured she needed to be among her own kind. The family was willing enough to take her in.” He almost sounded as though he felt guilty and needed to justify what he did with Ren. If that was the case, then Kagome knew he cared.
Inuyasha was about to ask Sesshomaru where his little toad was, but he came running up behind him.
“I bet you miss Ren,” Kagome chanced saying.
“Huh! Yeah right,” Jaken cut it. “Lord Sesshomaru didn't even care to leave the little brat with that family, even though she cried and begged him not to leave—”
“Shut up, Jaken,” Sesshomaru commanded, his voice ominous and not mean to be trifled with. Sesshomaru didn't even glance at Jaken, just continued to stare at Inuyasha and Kagome.
Jaken gaped at his lord, but said no more.
Sesshomaru spoke, “I sense the jewel.” At Kagome wide eyed look he said, “Don't worry. I want nothing to do with it.” Though his voice was calm, it didn't sound like he said it to reassure Kagome out of kindness. Merely stating he had no use for the jewel.
He continued, “I'm surprised though, Inuyasha, that you hadn't transformed years ago when you had the chance. Now that it's in your possession again, what do you plan to do with it?” He was taunting Inuyasha. But Inuyasha did not take the bait. Yet.
“None of your damn business, Sesshomaru. Why don't you just take your toad and get out of here?”
Before Jaken could defend himself about the `toad' comment, Sesshomaru decided to aggravate Inuyasha once more. “What will your little human think when you become full demon?”
Inuyasha's temper blazed. Sesshomaru was talking about her as though Kagome was a mere object. “She ain't my little human. And when I do become full demon when she's leaves, it won't concern her.” The words were out before he had given them a second thought of the effect they'd have.
Inuyasha was so angry with his half brother that he was oblivious to the gasp that came from Kagome and the stricken look on her face.
Sesshomaru on the other hand was not. He just smirked and stalked past them with out a word. Jaken of course, followed in suit. Sesshomaru had seen his brother brand on the wench's wrist and she reeked of him. She was Inuyasha's human all right. He wondered why Inuyasha even defended her when Sesshomaru mentioned so.
Inuyasha was glad to see them gone.
He faced Kagome, but she avoided looking at him. She was not going to allow him to see her tears. And just as old times he remained oblivious to why she was upset. Kagome knew he wasn't even aware that she was hurt by his words when he asked, “Ready to go?”
His voice was curt, so she just nodded, staying silent.
They walked with out say a word. Kagome didn't know where they were headed but Inuyasha seemed to. She didn't bother asking nor did he tell her.
Inuyasha knew Kagome must still be weak so he offered to carry her bag. She refused unlike earlier in the day when she had been more than eager.
He offered to carry her when she nearly stumbled from weakness. She declined. What the hell was wrong with her? She had been so jovial before Sesshomaru had come. Was it what his half brother said that mad her angry? That's why he tried to defend her by emphasizing that she didn't belong to him like some meager object.
So then why was she angry if he had put Sesshomaru in his place? He pondered on it as dark ascended quickly. He came up with no answer to why she was so withdrawn and no solutions how to make it right again.
As much as he hated to think it, he felt her anger was directed at towards him. He only wished he knew what he did wrong. He use to always make her mad. Being too stupid to know why, he'd ask, only to be told `sit' most of the time.
But his time she seemed sadder than anything.
It was now dark and stars filled the cerulean sky, and the crescent moon lent enough light so that Kagome could see Inuyasha's silhouette and the ground she walked on.
The night was beautiful, and if Kagome wasn't in so much pain she might have been able to enjoy it. Crickets sang off in the distance making for the only sound besides their footsteps on the ground. The summer night air was pleasant, though a chill begin to inhabit the air.
Kagome shivered but wouldn't dare voice her unease or her pain. Her ribs ached and were still tender and bruised. Her throat hurt and her lungs were arduous as she had a bit of trouble breathing.
She wanted to beg Inuyasha to slow down, but her pride wouldn't allow it. He didn't want her the way she wanted him and that was evident. Kagome wasn't sure if she longed to live in the futile era with him, or exactly what it was she desired. But she was sure willing to try to work something out that was convenient enough for the both of them.
That's how much she wanted to be with him. Not just for a while, but for . . . well, forever.
Maybe if she could keep the jewel and travel back and forth . . .
She shook her head. For one thing it was too dangerous to keep the jewel longer than necessary. For another, Inuyasha told Sesshomaru that when she was gone he would turn full demon. That meant he didn't want her to stay.
He still longed to become a full demon and didn't need her around. Though Kagome had to wonder, why didn't he change six years ago? Why wait? No reasonable answer came so she stopped wondering.
***********
“Let's set up camp here.” The spot Inuyasha picked was secluded and peaceful. Kagome almost wasn't used to the quiet having been home for so long with cars and subway trains to engage the night's soft silence.
But now the place Inuyasha picked had Kagome feeling a little restless and uneasy, or was it due to the fact that it was time for sleep and she longed not to sleep alone?
Inuyasha made a fire and leaned against a large boulder crossing his legs and putting both hands together in the sleeves of his kimono. He looked so relaxed that Kagome envied him. Wearily she set up her sleeping bag. She looked around before lying down. Besides the fire it was dark and hardly anything was visible. There were a few scattered trees and some tall green grass that shimmered in the scarce moonlight. But other than that it was bleak.
Kagome was about to lie down, glad her dress was comfortable enough to sleep in. She let her hair down, it was a curtain of raven hair that fanned her back and shoulders.
Kagome felt Inuyasha's gaze on her, but she ignored him. Taking the flower that he gave her from behind her ear, she set it next to her bag. Maybe when she got home she'd press it in a book. At least she'd have something to remember this bittersweet time with Inuyasha.
She laid down, her back to Inuyasha. Thoughts of her love for him flowed though her mind like a disinclined river. She didn't want to leave him. She didn't want him to deny or reject her. Why wouldn't he ask her to stay?
Kagome had hoped that his fixation with becoming a demon had ceased. But it clearly hasn't. Why did he feel like he had something to prove? Why did he think that to be half human was to be half weak?
She knew he should realize that being half human only made him stronger on so many levels. He was more sensible than most demons, besides when his temper gets in the way. He was caring where most demons defiantly were not. Inuyasha didn't realize his ability to sympathize with humans did not make him weak, only empathetic.
Not having anyone to protect but yourself only brought on failure and self-destruction. But being able to care for others and not just yourself was more than any demon could achieve.
And he had something no demon would ever have. Something that could hold love and tenderness which made him real:
His heart.
She was crying. He could smell her tears as she lay there pouring her unknown emotions out, Inuyasha sat there longing to hold her, kiss her, keep her. But something told him to keep to himself, for her anger and hurt was directed at him though he didn't know why.
Maybe she longed to go home and thought he was keeping her from doing so. Well he'd let her go it that's what she wished to do.
Kagome longed to crawl over to Inuyasha and cling to him, for he was her strength, her rock, her salutary passion. And though he didn't know it she felt she needed him to stay sane.
Had she been going crazy all these years? She turned to look at him. His eyes were closed, though she didn't think he slept peacefully. His face was calm, but there was an air about him that seemed troubled.
Ignoring the urge to go to him, Kagome turned back around and fell into a fitful sleep.
***********
Inuyasha woke with a start. He looked around to notice Kagome gone, along with her stuff. Jumping to his feet he looked around, but saw nothing, only a few lonely trees. His pulse started pounding as fear rested itself in the pit of his stomach.
He placed his hand on his tetsuiga and started running after scent. He began leaping vast distances to move quicker. Her scent accumulated though a small clearing of trees.
There was a lake. He could smell the water as well as see it shimmering in the sunlight like waves of golden flakes. Her scent mixed with the water. Inuyasha sighed in relief to the fact that she hadn't left him. He wanted to be the one to take her to the well if she was ready to leave. They would need a proper goodbye.
Inuyasha stepped through the trees and the sight of her that met his eyes was breathtaking. She looked like a mermaid who was unaware that she was being watched by a desiring sailor.
Water glistened on Kagome's soft, pail skin, gleaming in the sunlight. She was mostly covered in the water, but it was still so seductive even though she may have not even realized how sexy she was at that moment.
She let herself go under water, and Inuyasha held his breath. She came up from under the water and flipped her hair back sending droplets of water flying only inches from Inuyasha's feet.
Suddenly she stood giving him a full view of her miraculous, wet, iridescent body from behind. Inuyasha barely had seconds to run before she turned. He only hoped Kagome hadn't seen him.
All Kagome saw before she stepped out of the water was a flash of red. She didn't know whether to smirk of blush at the fact that Inuyasha had seen her naked again.
So she did neither as she stepped onto the shore of the lake and wrapped her towel around her body. Regardless of whether or not Inuyasha wanted her to leave, one thing was certain. He wanted her as much as she desired him. With that thought she began dressing.
***********
Kagome looked astonishing, Inuyasha thought. Her face was clean and glowing, her hair damp and braided to one side. Inuyasha swallowed hard at the sight of her as she wore some stretchy black capri's with a white knit top.
It was Kagome's last outfit that she packed. She would have to wash her clothe in a river if Inuyasha allowed her to stay a bit longer.
She wasn't about to tell him that she seen him spying on her as she bathed, and he didn't admit to it. They both figured it was better left behind in their minds rather than in the open.
Kagome threw her bag over her shoulder, feeling much stronger than the day before. They headed in the direction that Inuyasha led them.
He knew where he was taking Kagome, and he hoped she'd at least want to stay a couple more days when they got there.
Kagome on the other hand did not know where Inuyasha was taking her, but she hoped he'd let her stay at least another couple of days . . . She wasn't ready to leave him yet. Maybe she was weak, but she couldn't help wanting to be near him.
She wouldn't allow her pride to make her just pack up and leave where she wasn't wanted. This may be the last time she ever sees him. She wasn't about to give that. Give up the chance to fill the pages within her heart with sentiments of amorous times with Inuyasha.
Kagome secretly prayed he'd kiss her again, touch her again, taste her again. If he'd allow it she'd be more than happy to do the same to him. She longed to feel his hot skin against her, to be close to him as he enters her.
Kagome shook her head at her lusty thoughts, but she couldn't help what she or her body felt. She just hoped she wasn't the only one yearning for such closeness. Kagome just wished Inuyasha would learn to like himself the way he was instead of only finding faults because of his human side.
It was only human to find inconsistencies with ones self. But to learn to love ones self for who you are can only bring peace and happiness.
Kagome hoped Inuyasha would find his own peace before it was too late. Before she left and before he became too ruthless to care about the difference between right and wrong . . . love and hate.
