Thank you all, you have no idea how much your reviews truly mean to me!

This next chapter starts from where the last finished . . .

Inuyasha was going to follow her but Miroku laid a hand on his arm. “Let her be for a while. If I learned anything about women by being married to Sango, it's that you have to let them simmer for a while before you try to talk about what an ass you've been.”

Inuyasha looked at him harshly, but said nothing. As much as he hated to admit it, Miroku was right.

***********

Kagome ran all the way back to Sango's cottage. She had went to look for Inuyasha to have the unfortunate talk with him about when she should go back home. She never thought she'd hear him speak so impassively about her.

When Sango saw the state that Kagome was in she sent the children outside to play. She made Kagome some hot tea and kneeled on the floor next to her. “Would you like to talk about what happened that made you so upset?”

Kagome stayed silent, not knowing how to begin. Sango was patient and stayed as she was. Finally Kagome spoke, “I heard Inuyasha tell Miroku that he was better off with out me.”

“Kagome, maybe you misunderstood.”

“No. I know what I heard. I just find it hard to accept that all I am to him is a burden. I mean I thought . . . I had hoped . . .”

“What Kagome?” Sango asked gently.

“It's just that when he took care of me after the waterfall incident he seemed as though he cared as deeply as I do. I mean, he did some things that he wouldn't have done years ago, but now that he's matured more, he's seemed so romantic.”

“Him or your situation? You've never been alone with him when you knew him so well. When you were first alone together you were strangers and less was likely to occur,” Sango acknowledged.

“Both, I guess,” Kagome answered Sango's question. “It feels so right being with him like this. I guess I'm the only one who feels it. Oh, I feel like such an idiot!” Kagome groaned as she pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs.

“Don't feel that way, Kagome,” Sango offered comfortingly.

“I can't help but feel foolish.”

Sango gave an inattentive laugh to assuage the tense mood. “Who hasn't been a fool for love? One thing I've learned from my experience with Miroku is that to be foolish in love is to be reckless with the heart. It's unavoidable unless you're inhuman. It's taking chances even if the outcome may not be what you expect. Sometimes you just have to deal with what love and life hands you.”

Kagome looked up at Sango through her tear hazed eyes. “How did you become so wise?”

Sango giggled. “I don't know. It must be part of being a mother.”

Kagome smiled for a second than frowned. “Is this what you wanted, Sango?”

“Marriage and kids?” She shook her head. “Not at first. Come on, Kagome. I was a demon slayer; I used to slay with the best of them.” Her eyes became whimsical. “But I wouldn't trade my life for the world now. I love my children and I'm still in love with Miroku. Even if I wished I could still fit in my slayer clothes.”

They laughed good-naturedly.

“But now Kohaku's taking on the demon slayer roll of the family. I helped him finish his training and now he's slaying demons with Kirara when he's not home with us.”

Kagome puzzled. “You mean he lives here with you and Miroku?”

“Yeah. The kids love him. He's a great uncle.”

Kagome smiled in response.

Just then someone walked into the cottage. He was tall and handsome. His eyes were a deep chocolate brown color, his dark hair was about shoulder length and tied back roughly. His nose and cheeks were gently sprinkled with freckles though they were almost invisible to the human eye.

“Well speak of the devil,” Sango laughed.

Kagome looked at Sango in shock. Could this young man be . . .?

“Kohaku, your remember Kagome.”

He gave her a cordial nod of his head, “Of course. Hello, miss Kagome.” His voice was deep and pleasant now that he was no longer a young teen.

Kagome smiled. “Hello Kohaku,” she replied politely. “You're all grown up.”

He laughed pleasantly. “Try telling my sister that.”

Sango snorted. “Yeah, yeah. Just wash up and I'll get you some leftover dinner.”

Kohaku gave Kagome a `see what I mean' look. She smiled and rolled her eyes genially.

While Sango fixed Kohaku's dinner and gave him a lecture about something that Kohaku was sure the think was incoherent, Kagome stepped outside into the warm afternoon air.

Sitting on a small wooden bench near the cottage wall she inhaled the fresh scent of summer air and tepid soil. Immediately the twins, Kio and Kia, came over to her from a game they were playing.

“Hi,” Kia said looking like a mini version of her mother.

Kagome grinned. “Hello.”

“Is it true that you can shoot sacred arrows?” Kio asked with avid interest, his eyes lit with enthusiasm.

Laughing lightly Kagome said, “I used to be able to.”

Kia sat next to Kagome. “Can you still do it?”

Kagome thought a second. “I think so.”

Kio's eyes were still lit. “Can you show us?”

Kagome softly shook her head. “I should only do it when I have to.”

“Like-when-you-helped-my-mommy-and-daddy-and-Inuyasha-and-S hippo-battle-Naraku?” It came out of his mouth in one giant word he said it so fast.

Kagome laughed.

“You're Mom and Dad told you two everything, huh?”

They nodded their little heads with synchronized vitality.

“When I grow up,” Kia said vibrantly, I'm going to be a demon slayer like my Mommy and Uncle Kohaku.”

Kagome raised her eyebrows. “Wow, I'm impressed.”

Kio, hearing his twin sister being praised and wanting some for himself puffed out his chest and said, “Me, too!”

Kia jumped up. “No sir. You cry when you barely fall down. You're a wimp.”

Kio glared ominously at his sister. “No sir!”

“Yes sir!”

“No sir!”

“Yes sir!”

Kagome, knowing they could probably go through a chorus of `no sirs' and `yes sirs' for an hour or more, asked them if they wanted to learn a new game. They seem to forget they even had a disagreement and conceded to a game with their new found friend.

Inuyasha stood near the forest and watched Kagome. He found himself smiling, realizing how good she was with kids. It made a regretful feeling settle in his stomach, and he couldn't shake it.

He continued to watch Kagome teach the twins the game he heard her call `hopscotch' and found he could watch her forever if given the chance.

***********

Dusk began to settle and Sango told the twins to come inside to get ready for bed. They groaned and whined all the way inside the house.

Finally alone and suddenly lonely, Kagome decided to take a walk letting the family have their alone time. Sango had insisted she and Inuyasha stay the night before setting out for the well tomorrow. Kagome's heart ached as she thought of leaving Inuyasha and going back to her era.

But what choice did she have? It's not as though it was her decision to leave. Inuyasha made it clear to Sesshomaru that she was the only thing holding him back from fulfilling his reverie.

Kagome sighed as she walked down the small path that led to a nearby forest. She had agreed to stay the night at Sango's and Miroku's home before consulting with Inuyasha. She hoped he wouldn't be mad.

***********

Inuyasha couldn't sleep. He laid on a thin pallet in a small room at the back or Miroku's and Sango's house. He had to share Kohaku's room for the night. Kagome had informed him that she'd like to stay the night, though she had remained indifferent with him. He knew she must have taken what he said very hard for he knew how it must have sounded. Hell, he played it over and over again in his mind, and he was mad at himself for being such an idiot and sounding like such a jerk.

He always seemed to have that problem when he was around Kagome. Words never came out right, and his tone never advocated intellectuality when he spoke to her. Shit, he blew it.

The pale moonlight shone through the small windows of the confined room. Inuyasha laid on his back resting his arm languidly across his forehead.

He didn't blame Kagome if she never wanted to speak to him again. Nor would he blame her if she demanded to go home first thing in the morning. But damn would he miss her.

Though he meant what he said to Miroku. They would be better off without each other despite their feelings they may have towards one another. Kagome needed a human companion and he . . . after becoming a whole demon he would need no one.

He just hoped she'd be happy once she goes back to her own time for he knew he would never see her again. It was the best solution for both of them and he hoped she sees it that way instead of seeing him as the bad guy.

Maybe if the circumstances were different . . . no. He wiped the thought out of his head. He needed to be realistic and needed to face the facts. It wasn't different and it never would be. His time with Kagome will soon come to an end as most things do. He stared at the dark, blank ceiling as the unyielding thoughts swirled through his head.

His ears twitched as they picked up soft footsteps of someone tiptoeing barefoot. Then he heard it. Her sweet voice whispered his name, “Inuyasha?”

It came from the door. He stood up carefully checking to make sure Kohaku was still asleep. If his relaxed snores were any indication of his unconsciousness then Inuyasha could leave the room to see Kagome.

He stopped out quietly and met Kagome in the dim hallway. “Kagome, what is it?” he whispered.

She laid a finger over his lips. “Shh. Come with me.”

He followed her unable to ignore the way the soft, almost sheer night gown outlined her hour glass curves. He hadn't seen it on her before and wondered why she hadn't worn it while alone with him.

Kagome led him outside and to the small bench where she motioned for him to sit next to her. They said nothing at first, just sat close, the sides of their bodies brushed intimately as they gazed at the stars.

“Kagome—”

“Inuyasha,” Kagome cut in. “I'm sorry.”

He raised a brow. “For what?”

“I'm sorry that I'm such a nuisance to you.”

“You're not—”

“Let me finish, please, Inuyasha. I never wanted to keep you from doing what you wanted most. I had always hoped . . . When I found the jewel after not seeing you for all those years I couldn't help wondering and worrying about you. I convinced myself that all I wanted was to come back just to make sure you were okay. But I realized that wasn't all I wanted. I wanted to see you.”

Kagome's eyes filled with unremitting tears. She kept herself averted straight, unable to face Inuyasha out of fear of rejection and contempt.

“I wanted to be near you even if it only meant for a while. I wanted to risk everything to see you again. To hear your voice . . . to feel your touch,” she whispered chancing a look at him.

His eyes were unreadable, his posture tense.

Was this the part where he told her what a fool she's been to want such things? Is this where he tells her she isn't worth the time she's stolen from him the past two weeks? Kagome dreaded hearing any peeved of ventured words that he might throw at her.

Kagome nearly closed her eyes in redemption when he began to speak, his voice horse. “Kagome, I didn't know you felt that way.”

She stood up angrily. “Of course I do! Haven't you been listening to a word I said six years ago?!” Kagome demanded, nearly yelling. She looked around at the other cottages in the village hoping she didn't wake anyone up. Shaking her head she tried to hold back her imminent tears.

“Don't worry, Inuyasha,” she told him calmly, though her voice broke with every word. “I'll be leaving tomorrow with or without you accompanying me to the well.”

Hot tears streamed down her face in relinquish. She swiped at them angrily and walked passed Inuyasha fully intending to go inside the house.

Inuyasha jumped up from the bench and grabbed her hand pulling her to him almost roughly. “Damn it, Kagome,” He let out harshly. He crushed his lips to hers in what he knew was an audacious move. But he didn't care. He needed to feel her, make sure she was real. She said out loud that she'd be leaving him. She was upset, but all he could do at that moment was fulfill his need to taste her lips.

Kagome allowed herself to be pulled into his kiss, responding fervently, melting in his arms. She couldn't help herself, couldn't trust herself around him. He just tasted too good and felt too right.

His hands roamed down her back to rest on her hips. Inuyasha pressed his body to hers allowing her to feel his obvious need for her.

Kagome pulled from the kiss in shocked ardor. She didn't pull from his embrace though. Just merely rested her forehead to his, relishing in the moment. Her whole being tingled and grew warm in responsiveness at his strong, demanding presence.

She roved her hands over his strong, subtly muscled back and allowed her head to drop to his shoulder. Kagome heard his fast breathing descend back to normal and heard his heart beat slow to a steady, almost melodic beat.

Embracing him tightly to her feeling him holding her closely, she inhaled her scent. Inuyasha's smell was heady, as he smelled of soil, earth, and summer air. He smelled of everything she ever dreamed of, everything she ever wished for.

He smelled . . . all male.

Being held by him like this was nothing but sweet misery. Her heart cried in fruitless despair, as her mind ordered her to quit being foolish wanting to stay where she wasn't wanted. In a delicately painful move, Kagome backed out of his hold and ran inside the house. She made her decision; she was leaving in the morning with out him knowing.
