Chapter 1: The Job

A tall silver-haired man stood in front of an arched window. His amber eyes roamed over the lands he inherited from his father, the late King of the Western Lands. Turning from the window, he looked at his scruffy brother. “InuYasha, why must you wear a paupers clothes?” he asked with a voice void of any emotion.

“Feh! These are very comfortable.” InuYasha said leaning against the oak paneling of the room. InuYasha’s golden eyes flickered over his brother with a bored expression as his ears flicked back and forth catching the sounds of the castle. “Why did you summon me?”

“InuYasha I am in dire need of your services.” he said standing at the window again.

“Oh the high and mighty King Sesshomaru needs help from the lowly hanyou Prince InuYasha or his other title known as the Silver Fang?” InuYasha scoffed at his older brother.

“Cut the crap InuYasha.” Sesshomaru threatened with his calm voice. “The neighboring King has invaded our lands and attacked the border villages. I had sent Miroku to inspect them and he sent a letter back saying four of the six villages were completely destroyed. I want you to use your talents to get rid of this King’s heir. I want him to invade my lands with a massive force. I believe the Eastern Kingdom has hardly any demons. We I might say are a full demon country with few humans.”

“So you propose assassination eh? Why?” InuYasha asked him, his eyes a molten gold flickering happily as a smirk crossed his face.

“Why must I repeat everything for you?” Sesshomaru asked his brother while glaring.

“Fine I will except this mission from my great and terrible brother!” InuYasha stood from the wall and saluted his brother. Sesshomaru rolled his eyes at his brother’s antics. “What’s the pay again?” he asked his face as serious as it could get. His silver hair contained in a sloppy braid swung from his movements.

“I didn’t say. I will pay you when you get back from your travels.” Sesshomaru turned to fully face his younger brother and said, “After you come back I will discuss further employment, but for now I have business that I must attend to. General Miroku will be arriving at any time today.”

“Miroku huh? Sango won’t like that.” InuYasha said chuckling. Miroku happened to follow Sango around everywhere like a lost puppy, except puppies didn’t grope one of the castle’s most dangerous women’s butt. More often than naught Miroku mysteriously ended up in the dudgeons deep under the castle covered in bruises. Everyone on the castle knew they loved each other, all except them. They were oblivious to each other’s affection. If Kaede, the castle’s resident Miko had her way they would be quickly married off. Which if he didn’t move right now Sesshomaru would say something about his duty. InuYasha almost made it to the door when Sesshomaru’s cold chuckle filled the room.

“Are you trying to sneak out? Little brother you need to get married, it is the duty of being a prince.” InuYasha froze and turned to face his brother.

Glaring at the ice King InuYasha replied, “ I do not want to marry some princess who only cares about what she’s going to wear the next day! I rather marry a cow.” InuYasha growled.

“I could arrange that.” Sesshomaru said as he turned to face the window once again. InuYasha pushed the heavy oak door open, as he knew that was Sesshomaru’s way of dismissing him. As the door shut behind him InuYasha stormed down the hallway to the staircase at the end. Growling InuYasha leapt down the stairs and ran the full bottom floor corridor until he reached the main door. Throwing the heavy doors open with a fraction of his strength InuYasha strode out into the bright sunlight of the day. Looking around he spotted the servant lying beneath a tree keeping out of the growing heat.

He called to the servant and waited while the boy ran up to him, “Bring Ryu from my pasture.” as InuYasha waited for the boy to return, he watched the soldiers stroll the battlements of the walls. The number of guards went from 2 to 6 since yesterday. InuYasha scratched his head as he heard the boy’s breathless breathing from here. Turning to the kid InuYasha grabbed the reins of his black warhorse and knowing the kid ran all the way to Ryu’s pasture he flipped a coin to him. As the kid held the coin up to his wide eyes InuYasha chuckled as Ryu tossed his black mane. InuYasha hopped on the back of his horse and motioned for him to gallop. The charger’s great muscled legs pushed off as Ryu lengthened his stride to a full gallop. Turning into a red silver and black blur, the horse and rider thundered through the castles gates and onto the main trade road. The various traders shouted curses at InuYasha as he sped past seeking his destination. Up ahead a large inn and tavern was beginning to appear. InuYasha slowed Ryu to a trot and fully stopped as he came to the front of the Lucky Dog tavern. He slid off the horse’s great back and handed the reins to the stable boy. “Tie him up outside and be sure no one touches him except you. He tends to bite people that doesn’t handle him.” InuYasha had to contain the laughter that would have surfaced because of the boy’s scared face. He tossed a couple of coins to the boy as he pushed the doors of the tavern open. A myriad of noises and smells assaulted him as he strode throughout the place looking and listening for a certain person. A voice suddenly caught his attention, seeking out the face of the disembodied voice was easy when he heard the person talk again.

“I’ll raise the wager.” a purple clad soldier sat at a table and laid three coins in the large pile already there.

“You sure about that?” a feminine voice asked.

“Hell yes!” Miroku yelled happily. InuYasha shook his head as he noticed Miroku’s gambling companion was Sango. He sighed, ‘he never learns does he?’

“Hey Miro. What’s up Sango?” InuYasha asked as he sat down in an empty chair. Sango looked at InuYasha with a twinkle in her eye as she rolled the dice in her hand.

“Numbers Miroku?” she asked the grinning General.

“7 to 12.” Miroku answered.

“Okay.” Sango said as she tossed the dice onto the table. When the dice stopped Miroku slammed his head on the table and groaned. InuYasha shook his head as he looked at the dice. The pips read 4 on one dice and two on the other, six total. Sango smiled as she pulled the entire pile of coins into a pouch she held.

“You’ll never learn will you?” InuYasha asked his lifelong friend.

“No!” Miroku replied as his headshot up from the table.

“So you came because my brother called you?” InuYasha asked as Sango warily watched the bartender who was looking at her with an odd expression.

“Yeah he wants me to smuggle you into the lands. I know that place pretty well.” Miroku said as he turned to glare at the bartender. The guy was new so he had no idea Sango would either beat him to a pulp, lock him in a dungeon or fire him from the bar by protesting to her lord, InuYasha.

“Okay. I want both you and Sango to meet me by the back gate.” InuYasha whispered as he stood. They nodded and watched as he left.

“Does he now the heir is a girl?” Sango asked Miroku as soon as InuYasha walked out of hearing range.

“Sesshomaru didn’t want to tell him. You know how he is about killing girls.”
