Chapter 3: Enter Kori

***After the Job***

“Miroku! Why didn’t you tell me the heir was a girl! You know how I don’t do girls!” InuYasha growled as he slid through the open window of their room.

“You don’t do girls? What are you gay?” Miroku snickered. Sango looked up from the scroll she was reading and ducked as Miroku flew over her head and hit the bed with a soft thud.

“Miroku, we all know what happens when you question anything InuYasha does.” Sango said as she resumed reading. “Shippo will be able to help us sell our wares.”

“Fine, monk don’t you ever call me gay!” InuYasha growled as he pulled the bloodstained silver cloak off and threw the farmers garb over it. Pulling a small bag from his assassin’s cloak her reapplied the dust to his face. “Did you two find an alternate route out?”

“Yes, one we can go through the main gate and two the port.” Miroku said rubbing his head.

“Okay the market opens in an hour and we have to sell these wares, so lets go, and InuYasha pleases refrain from doing something like yelling or growling.” Sango said as she stood.

“Feh!” InuYasha replied as he followed her out the door.

***The market***

Looking around Kagome saw all the strange faces of people she would have never known if she had stayed in the castle. Jumping to the side as a little kid ran by Kagome smiled as she watched him run.

“Oi runt! Get back here!” a stooped old man hobbled after him. Kagome watched the man walk after him and noticed there was something odd about him. Shrugging off the feeling Kagome went in search of her favorite food, Syl from the Western Lands. The Syl plant would only grow in a place that was heavily populated with Yokai. The round green fruit was sweet and had a sour after taste. Spotting a vendor from the Western Lands Kagome walked up and asked if they had any of the fruit.

“Sango dear would you please bring me the Syl fruit?” a man asked a young woman. The girl Sango looked at him and nodded.

“Here you go miss. And Miroku do you know where our dear father ran off to?” Sango asked the man. Kagome handed the woman two copper coins in payment.

“No I don’t. Although Shippo must have done something since he isn’t around either.” the man Miroku said as Kagome wondered off into the crowd.

Happily munching the fruit Kagome was unaware of the two people that trailed her. Taking the last bite Kagome wiped her hands on her dress and turned to find herself in an alley. “What? This isn’t supposed to be here.” she turned and found herself face to face with two burly men.

“Hey baby want to see how a real man acts?” one of the two asked as he rocked his hips back and forth.

“Um sorry I think you got the wrong person.” Kagome said as she tried to walk past the two. The quiet one grabbed her wrist and pulled her to his face.

“Did I give you permission to leave whore?” he yelled in her face his breath thick with alcohol.

“Let me go!” Kagome shrieked as the second man tugged on her dress.

“Looks like we got ourselves a virgin, Konjo.” he said as she struggled in Konjo’s arms. She bit the man’s hand and screamed for help. The man slapped her hard and said, “Quiet you whore!”

“Let her go.” a raspy voice said as an old man hobbled into the alley.

“Shove out of it old man! We paid her to do this!” Konjo said.

“I doubt that. Now put her down before I kill you,” the old man said. Kagome gasped as she recognized the old man hobbling after the little kid.

“You want to take on two professional fighters?” the second man said.

“Yes. Now either put her down and run or attack me.” the old man said his voice no longer raspy but clear. Beneath his hat golden eyes flickered in the dark of the alley.

The second man who had lifted her dress charged the old man. An inch from being hit the old man leapt up over his head and kicked the man in his back. The hat stayed on his head as he jumped the sides of the buildings and landed behind Konjo.

“Put her down.” the man said again. Kagome felt the grip lossen as Konjo turned and stabbed the old man. Kagome stumbled back as she watched the old man lift Konjo above her head and toss him far in to the ally. Favoring his arm he asked her, “Are you alright?” Kagome nodded as he opened his shirt to look at the cut. “Not bad.” he looked at her. “Come on I’m sure Sango can help you find some new clothes.” he pointed at her torn dress. Kagome numbly nodded as she followed the stranger out of the alley. As he walked in front of her Kagome glimpsed silver shine from beneath his hat. The ‘old’ man was no longer hobbling but walking upright. He was taller than her, and seemed to be younger than he let on.

“You coming?” he asked when he noticed she stopped.

“Who are you?” she asked the stranger.

“Your guardian angel. Either follow me or go on your own, neither choice bothers me.” he said as he crossed his arms.

“I can buy my own clothes, thank you for your hospitality.” she said as she bowed to him. Turning on her heel she left him behind her.

“Will you tell me your name if I told you mine?” the stranger asked as he appeared besides her.

“My name’s Kori.” Kagome said as she watched a seamstress take down her banner.

“Mine’s Yash.” he said as he turned and left.

“Yash?” she whispered to herself as he walked away. Smiling she thought to herself, ‘well Yash I am going to find out who you really are.’ she followed him through the crowd.
