Chapter 8: Silver Fang

Kagome rubbed the raw flesh of her wrist as she fallowed the dark-haired girl who had called herself Sango. “You are currently on the Western Kingdom’s main castle grounds. The hut you’re staying in was previously Miroku’s who moved out and into the barracks a few months ago. As you can see the hut consists of a main room, a kitchen, a bedroom and a pantry. The privy is outside near the forest.”

“Okay, why did InuYasha bring me here?” Kagome asked as Sango sat down at the kitchen table, Kagome followed suit.

“I don’t know. He’s a strange one. He normally roams the forests and what he does in them I have no idea.” Sango said her brows furrowing.

“So King Sesshomaru’s actually letting me an outsider stay in his lands?” Kagome asked.

“Yes he did it as a favor to the Silver Fang.” Sango said as she looked up from Kagome and faced the doorway.

“Ahh Miroku what do you want?” Sango said. Kagome turned and spotted the shorthaired man standing in the doorway.

“Our lord has summoned us and it is nearing nightfall, you don’t want the Silver Fang to kill us do you?” Miroku said as he turned and walked out of the room.

“Okay, Kagome I want you to stay in here since the army barracks are so close. Some of those men are known to do dishonorable things to women.” Sango said as she stood and looked pointedly at Miroku who pointed towards the door.

“Okay.” Kagome said as she nodded. The door shut behind Kagome’s newest friend. Kagome turned and walked into her room. She sat on the dark purple blankets and wondered how to tell them she was a princess. She drifted deep into her thoughts and at one point she didn’t hear the window of her room open as a silver cloaked figure climbed in.

“You know if you want to be an assassin, you should be more alert.” A deep voice said, drawing her from her thoughts. Startled Kagome jumped up from the bed and threw her hands in her face. “Easy I ain’t going to hurt you.”

“Who are you?” Kagome asked pulling her hands away from her face.

“The one and only…Silver Fang!” the figure said bowing. As he did so a pendant on a silver chain fell out. The object glimmered in the candlelight and for a brief moment she saw it was a fang, from some kind of animal attached to a silver clasp.

“Oh.” she said as he stood. The cloak’s hood covered his face so she couldn’t see what he looked like. “Why silver?”

“Huh? Oh I like this color of the moon reflecting on the surface of the Amere River.” he said as he leaned against the wall. “Tonight I shall take you to a secluded part of the forest for your first training session. Your first objective will be to follow me with out a sound. Put this on.” he reached into his cloak and pulled out a gray bundle.

“What is it?” Kagome asked as she took it from him.

“A cloak. How dumb can you get?” the voice said.

“I’ll have you know I am not dumb!” she sharply said as she pulled the cloak on. Lifting the hood over her head she glared at the figure in silver.

“I believe the moon is out, so lets go before you waste any more time complaining.” Silver Fang said as he jumped out the window. Kagome ran to the window stumbling over the long cloak.

“Hold on!” she said as she struggled to get out the window. A pair of strong arms pulled her by the waist and set her down beside him.

“Sure are slow.” Silver Fang said as he began walking southwest with long strides.

“Hey wait!” Kagome yelled as she struggled to keep up. Running to keep without tripping, she looked at his back she noticed a patch of the cloak was darker than the rest. As the moonlight reflected off of it she saw a symbol.

“I thought I told you this is a lesson in stealth?” he said as he abruptly turned to face her making the symbol disappear. The edges of the cloak flared as he turned to face the forest once again. Kagome hissed at him and began to walk quieter as she still struggled to keep from tripping. The man in front of her although walking slowly was putting distance between the two. Mumbling curses a princess shouldn’t know Kagome jogged after holding the edge of the cloak off the ground. She glanced at he feet to make sure the cloak was not touching the ground. Satisfied that it wasn’t she looked up and was shocked to see Silver Fang was nowhere to be seen.

“Damn it all to hell!” she cursed as she ran oddly. She slowed to a walk as her feet came in contact with a cobble road. She walked across the road careful to keep the noise level low. Sighing she stepped onto the soft ground. Laying a hand on the thick, rough bark of an old tree, Kagome looked around for any signs of the cloaked man. She froze as she heard a branch break deep within the darkness of the heavily treed forest. She took a step back as she heard a deep growling. A yellowish blur burst from the trees and Kagome screamed as the great beast rammed into her. Snarling the beast stood over her its great maw gaping and dripping with saliva. Kagome trembled and shut her eyes waiting for the death that was surely waiting for her. She was shocked however when a loud rumble came from the beast. Thinking it was the monster’s stomach growling Kagome whimpered in fear.

“Get up. You’re embarrassing me.” a deep voice said. Kagome opened her eyes and looked around. The monster was nowhere to be seen. The Silver Fang was leaning against a tree holding something roughly the size of a kitten. The kitten looked down at her and meowed.

“Where’d the monster go?” Kagome asked as she stood.

“Kirara must have thought you where an enemy. I’m surprised Zurni wasn’t the one that attacked you. Though if it was him you would’ve been killed….” Silver Fang told her. The yellow kitten jumped from his arms and rubbed its little body against Kagome’s legs. Kagome picked it up as it meowed softly. “That’s your ‘monster’”

“This? But it’s just a kitten.” Kagome protested.

“Looks can be deceiving.” Silver Fang told her. “Kirara, Sango must be looking for you by now. Zurni is the one that’s supposed to be patrolling at night.”

The kitten jumped down out of her arms and quickly disappeared into the forest. The Silver Fang sighed as he turned to face Kagome. “You are so freakin annoying. Come on before you waste even more time.” Kagome glared at him as he turned and walked into the forest. She ran after calling him a string of obscure names.

Cursing every time her cloak caught on a bramble or thorn, Kagome made her way deeper into the forest. Up ahead she noticed a light softly glowing. Not caring if it was some bandit she ran with a renewed vigor. Bursting into the clearing she leaned over as she panted for breath.

“You do a fair impersonation of a dog. Can you roll over?” The Silver Fang asked from his spot by the fire. He stuck a stick in it and poked it.

“I…am…not…trying…to…act…li ke…a…dog…” Kagome said breathlessly.

“Sure. Okay since you ain’t that good at stealth maybe you should try archery,” he said as he reached to his side and picked up a bow. “Here. See that tree over there, the one with the x on it? Shoot it.”

“I’ll try.” Kagome said as she reached for the bow and picked the quiver up. Hiding the grin Kagome shoot the tree, missing the first time. This was the sport he father allowed her to do.

“That was a wild shot try tightening your focus,” his voice sounded tired as he yawned.

“Hmph!” she replied as she shot 4 arrows into the x making the legs of the letter. She then shot an arrow in the direct center. Grinning wildly now when she heard him gasp in astonishment she shot four more making an x.

“Okay, maybe I was wrong.” he told her. “Then again you are a girl…I should have known you were good with some wimpy weapon.”

“I am a girl and this is not a wimpy weapon!” Kagome yelled holding the bow up.

“Wimp!” Silver Fang said in an oddly familiar voice. Kagome lifted the bow and shot the last arrow at him. Watching as the arrow sped towards its mark Kagome smiled. Her smile disappeared when she heard him laughing. The arrow was holding up a piece of fabric torn from his cloak. Looking around wildly she found him sitting in a tree his shadowed form outlined by the moonlight.

“Chicken! Can’t even face a girl!” Kagome said as he stood in the tree.

“Yeah and I’m a human.” Silver Fang said as he turned his back to her.

“You are so…so…. So…”Kagome stuttered angrily.

“I’m so what princess?” Silver Fang asked.

“A jerk!” Kagome yelled as she stormed out of the clearing and into the forest.

“Hey! Get back here wild demons lurk out there!” his voice came to her.

“Right!” she yelled back without stopping.

“I ain’t lying!” his voice faintly said.

“Hmph!” Kagome said as she discovered she was lost.

Walking around she looked for a familiar way. The lengthened shadows had completely lost her.

“The Jewel! Give me the jewel!” a hard angry voice ordered. Turning widely around Kagome quickly found herself face to face with a large centipede like demon with a woman’s upper torso. Kagome screamed as the creature surrounded her with it’s segmented legs.
