7. Opportunity Knocks.

InuYasha was almost done with his bowl of ramen and noticed how Kagome barely touched hers. She had been listening and had forgotten about her food.

“You have barely touched your meal.” He pointed out.

She said, “Why didn't she take you then?”

He pondered her question for a moment and then said, “Perhaps because of the impending completion of the Shikon-No-Tama jewel.”

She assessed his answer to see if it made sense. There was another question she thought about. “Earlier, you told Kirara to come in seven days. Does Kikyo have anything to do with that?”

“No,” he said. “I said that because that is how long I want to spend with you. I mean, alone and as my mate.”

He paused and resumed saying, “That is, if you'll have me.”

Kagome felt a gargantuan lump on her throat.

Is it true that he is absolved from his promise? She thought. Can I believe it? Should I believe it?

If she opened her heart just a little in hopes that they could be together, and yet he was still bound to his promise to Kikyo, then this time it could surely break her.

Her cracked voice was heard saying, “I have been trying so hard to get over you. What are you doing to me?”

“Don't you see?” He said, “I may still protect her and I may still go to hell with her but you and I can finally be together.”

Her hands were clutching onto her bowl as she was trying to compose herself in vain. She started shaking her head from side to side and then tears practically sprayed out of her eyes after she shut them tight. “No, it can't be true. Don't give me false hope InuYasha. That's….that's cruel.”

“I love you.” He said.

The shell that she had so carefully tailored around her heart began to crack. When she felt this she panicked. She opened her eyes in anger and defeat and said grinding her teeth, “You are tearing me apart!”

Immediately, he set his bowl aside and reached out to hold her by her upper arms. He said, “Kagome, there is no Kikyo. Hell, there never was! Not since you released me. I was bound to her by a necessary promise but she won't have me as I am. Now I am only bound to protect her and she's still determined to take me to hell with her. If you accept all that then you and I can be mates right now.”

Overcome with his words she let go of the bowl as it rolled down. All of its contents spilled to the floor. She lifted her head as her torso shook and slacked forward in a sob. She said, “This can't be. I beg you, please stop.”

Then he pulled her towards him. This was déjà vu from the time he had pulled her in a hug when Sesshomaru almost killed her. “Come back Kagome. Come back to me. You gave me your body three times last night. But that's not enough. I want more. I want your heart, I want your mind, and I want your soul.”

She sobbed when those words penetrated deep into her soul. Those words finally shattered that hard shell that had been surrounding her heart since the day that InuYasha had made his decision.

Kagome was still and silent.

Alarmed, InuYasha pushed her away from him to look at her tear stained face. It was somewhat eerie to see her so serene so abruptly.

She looked at him and said, “Now you've done it.”

He raised an eyebrow questioningly and she said, “Now you won't be able to get rid of me no matter what. Even when Kikyo takes you to hell, I am coming with you.”

His lower chin hung when he heard this.

She gave him a beaming smile.

He hugged her tight and this time he had a lump in his throat when he said in a shudder, “You have no idea what that means to me.”

This time she pulled back to look him directly and said seriously, “I mean it.”

He watched her shiny eyes and he said, “I know.”

Kirara arrived to the camp and everyone was putting the dinner material away. Sango had saved a plate of food for the demon cat that had transformed to her smaller form.

Sango watched as Kirara ate her meal. It was then when Sango asked, “Kirara, when will you pick up Kagome and InuYasha? I will say the number of days and you will let me know when I reach the number.”

Kirara meowed in agreement.

Sango said, “One day?”

Kirara continued eating her meal. “Two days?”

Kirara raised her head to look around when she thought she heard something. Then she lowered her head once more sniffing the food before resuming her task.

Sango looked at Miroku who observed attentively. Sango sweat dropped. This meant more than two days with Miroku. She was not sure if she could resist his advances for that long.

She swallowed, “Three days?”

Kirara continued eating and swallowing. “Four days?” She asked sounding more alarmed this time.

The cat was almost finished with her food. Although small she ate fast. The plate was unusually large for such a cat but it was a full grown cat demon that was feeding.

Sango already knew that she was now doomed. There was word that there were shards a day travel on Kirara away. They knew that it might be a wild goose chase. However, it was established since before that if they were to go on in pairs then it was best to leave Shippo behind with Kaede if that was possible. This was going to be one of those instances.

She sighed nervously and could see Miroku looking at her. She could read in those eyes that he knew what she feared. On the other hand, Miroku was savoring the opportunity that had presented itself.

Unbeknownst to everyone, Miroku had been courting her without restraint. He concealed this from the others by skillfully ending his advances at anyone's presence. However, Sango would be found blushing red and flustered. Everyone would ask her about her blush making matters worst.

Exasperated she started saying the number of days one after the other, “Five days, six days, seven days, e-”

“Meow,” chirped Kirara.

Sango froze. “Seven?”

“Meow,” repeated Kirara.

Then Sango slumped back and said more to herself than to anyone, “Seven days.”

Miroku had been sitting in front of the fire. He had to raise a hand to hide his mouth. He could not resist the smile that had planted itself there.

Sango looked up to see him watching the fire with his hand loosely in front of his mouth deep in thought.

He looked at her and then he lowered his hand looking at her seriously. He looked handsome and determined.

She could not tear her sight from him. It was as if she had given up. There was no use to resist anymore. She knew herself. Since Miroku had stopped his wayward ways he had become irresistible to her. The number of dreams and day dreams she's had about him were too many to count. That compounded with how he would give her a soft kiss in her hand, cheek, or forehead whenever nobody looked increased her desire for him.

Miroku saw how open she was to him at that moment. He realized that his time had come and he was going to take full advantage of it.
