The next morning things were back to normal, and Taro was pleased to find that his parents were once again happy. After breakfast, Kagome went to train with Kaede, and Taro went to play with some of the village children, those whose parents were simply glad to see the young miko had returned, and didn’t care that she and the hanyou were together. InuYasha was out leading a hunting party to help the village prepare for the coming winter.

Kaede and Kagome were going over herb mixtures that she had forgotten in her extended absence. She was writing down the elderly miko’s vast knowledge in a notebook, so that she would always have the information to look back to, when a strange sense of forbidding washed over her.

“Kaede, do you feel that?” Kagome asked.

“Feel what, child?” Kaede questioned.

“I’m just going to check on Taro,” she said.

As she stepped outside she saw a small group of children running through the village crying out for their parents. All of them were shouting about a youkai. She looked around for Taro but didn’t see him anywhere. Kagome ran in the direction the children had come from.

“Taro...” she called. “Taro, where are you.”

“This way,” InuYasha said, seeming to land beside her out of nowhere. He threw her onto his back and ran. “It’s Sesshomaru.”

“He wouldn’t hurt him, would he... I mean Taro’s his nephew,” Kagome asked.

“And I’m his brother. What’s your point wench?” InuYasha replied.

They broke through the tree line and found Sesshomaru holding Taro up by the back of his shirt looking at him. Taro was swiping at him. “Let me go. My papa will kick your butt if you don’t.”

“Sesshomaru,” InuYasha yelled. “Let go of my pup.”

He set Kagome down and stood in front of his brother, hand on the hilt of his sword.

“Please, Sesshomaru,” Kagome added quietly. “He’s only a little boy.”

“Like the bastard cares about that, right asshole?” InuYasha snarled. “Knocking around a starving pup is something you’ve had plenty of practice at.”

For a moment, something like regret flashed in the tai youkai’s eyes. He lowered Taro to the ground, and the boy ran to his mother. “This Sesshomaru did not come to fight with you, half breed.”

“Then what did you come for?” InuYasha demanded.

“I heard tell of an inu hanyou child with spiritual powers. Since none in my court would lower themselves to mate with a human, I came to see if it was, as I suspected, you, who had further tainted the noble blood of the inu youkai with another half breed,” Sesshomaru explained. Something akin to a smile graced his lips as his attention turned to Kagome. “Though I was mistaken about which miko had whelped your offspring. I was certain that since I last saw you with the other, her head between your legs, that she was the one whom I would be seeing.”

InuYasha growled loudly and drew his sword.

“Did you not tell your mate of this?” Sesshomaru asked. “Or that her scent lingers in this area as if she were here earlier this very day?”

“Bastard,” InuYasha growled, bringing the Tetsusaiga down.

Sesshomaru dodged easily. “Tell your mother whelp, does your father smell of earth and death?”

Taro wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do. His mother was looking at him as if she was waiting for his answer. “Yes.”

Kagome’s eyes met with InuYasha’s for a second and she saw guilt. She took Taro’s hand. “Let’s go, baby.”

“But what about papa?” Taro asked as his mother pulled him along by the hand.

“Papa doesn’t need us with him,” Kagome said as she continued back to the village.

InuYasha roared, “Kaze no kizu!”

Sesshomaru again just leapt out of the way. “Something troubling you, little brother?”

“Fuck you. You know I wasn’t doing anything wrong with Kikyou this morning,” InuYasha snarled. “I think it’s time I finally killed you for all the hell you’ve put me through.”

“This Sesshomaru will not fall to likes of you, half breed,” he replied as he summoned his transportation cloud.

“Get back here, you bastard,” InuYasha yelled.

“I caution you... I know what power your son holds, and if this Sesshomaru was able to discern this information, then others with darker intentions than I certainly will as well,” Sesshomaru said as he faded from sight.

InuYasha sheathed his sword and raced after Kagome. He thought about what Sesshomaru had said. He knows Taro is the Shikon no Tama. He said others will figure it out...Could he have heard something? I’ll have to track his ass down and beat it out of him, but first... first I have to get Kagome to believe me about Kikyou.

He found her at their house packing a bag for her and Taro. She didn’t even acknowledge him, and when he touched her, she pulled away. “Taro, go wait for me at Kaede’s. I need to speak with her before we go visit grandma.”

The little boy nodded and left them.

“Kagome, will you at least hear me out?” InuYasha asked.

“Why do you think I sent him away?” Kagome replied. “Sesshomaru may be a lot of things, but he doesn’t lie, so I can’t wait to hear your explanations. Did you need help tying your hakama or maybe a snake youkai bit you and she was sucking out the poison? Well, tell me already. The suspense is killing me.”

“What do you want to hear Kagome? Sesshomaru doesn’t lie. I should have told you all right,” he said. “I didn’t lie when I said I hadn’t seen her since the day you left. That night she showed up and we talked a long time, about a lot of things. She saw us together. She wanted to know if I thought we could be together, if I still cared for her. She kissed me. I wanted to see... You were never coming back. What the bastard didn’t bother to tell you was that it was your name that I called out. Kikyou left and she hasn’t been back since, until today.”

“All this time, you knew how I felt and you still didn’t tell me that you and she...” Kagome started.

“I fucked up. I should have told you, but I couldn’t stand the thought of how you’d look at me after,” he told her. “You and I... we had just been together and then right after... I felt like a total bastard after it happened, and I wanted it to go away.”

“And this morning?” Kagome asked. “Were you with her?”

“Yes,” he admitted.

“I see,” Kagome said, picking up the bag. “You can’t have our son. You can visit him, but I won’t let you raise him with her. He’s mine, not hers. I carried him and gave birth to him. It was me who fed him and cared for him. I was the one who protected him, and I won’t give him up... not even for you.”

“Damn it,” InuYasha growled, grabbing her shoulders. “She was hanging around, so I went to see what she wanted. I wasn’t with her like that. She heard about Taro and came to find out if he was mine, if you had finally come back. She hugged me and said that she was glad I was finally able to find happiness. She has a home in a village about three days from here as their miko. She told me that she’s happy there. You’re my mate, Kagome. She is my past and you, you and our son are my future.”

“I need some time,” Kagome said after a long pause. “I’m going to take Taro with me to visit mama.”

“Kagome...” InuYasha started.

“Just answer me this one thing: if Sesshomaru hadn’t said anything, would you have told me that you went to see her this morning?” Kagome asked.

InuYasha’s silence was his reply.

“I want to believe you, but you’ve been hiding things from me, with no plans to ever tell me about them,” Kagome said quietly. She headed for the door and InuYasha grabbed her.

“I’m sorry, koishii,” he told her. His tone was desperate. “Don’t leave.”

Kagome knew that he meant it, and she really did believe that he hadn’t been doing anything with Kikyou; but it hurt that he hadn’t trusted her enough to tell her these things, before she had to hear it from Sesshomaru. “A few days,” she whispered. “I just need a few days to clear my head and my heart. I love you, but I’m hurt, and I just can’t be around you right now. Please.”

InuYasha released her. “All right. Will you at least let me walk you to the well?”

Kagome looked at him and nodded. It would be better if he walked with them. Taro would be less worried that something was wrong if InuYasha was there to see them off. They stopped by Kaede’s so that Kagome could tell her that she wouldn’t be available to train for a few days, and then they left for the well.

“Papa are you coming with us?” Taro asked.

“Not this time,” InuYasha replied. “I have to stay here, but you’re only going to be gone a couple of days. Take good care of your mother for me.”

“I will,” Taro vowed.

Kagome leaned up and gave InuYasha a small kiss on his lips and then brushed a hand across his cheek before jumping into the well with Taro. InuYasha couldn’t stand the thought of going back to their home without her, so he jumped up into the Goshinboku. He would remain there so that he could be there to meet them the second they returned.

Asami turned and smiled when she saw her daughter and grandson come inside. “Hello, dear. I was wondering when you would be coming for a visit. Where is InuYasha?”

“He didn’t come with us,” Kagome replied.

Her mother frowned a little, and Kagome knew she could tell that she was upset. “How long are you staying?”

“Only a couple of days,” Kagome told her. She turned to her son. “Take this upstairs for me please.”

The boy took the bag and headed out of the room.

“Would you like to talk about it, darling?” her mother asked.

Kagome took a seat at the table. “He was keeping things from me, and he went to see her. He wasn’t going to tell me about it. Sesshomaru showed up and he was the one who told me. I believe what he said happened was the truth, that they just talked, but it still hurt that he didn’t think he could tell me. I didn’t want to do anything or say anything I might regret, so I figured it would be best to get away for a few days and give myself time to let it go.”

“Well, you’re welcome to stay as long as you need,” Asami offered.

“Thank you, mama,” Kagome replied.

That night InuYasha went through the well and looked into the window of Kagome’s old room. He watched his mate and his son sleeping for a long time before returning to the past.

The next day Kagome took Taro with her shopping for some necessities, namely ramen, to take back with them the following day. She had done a lot of thinking and managed to come to terms with why InuYasha felt that he couldn’t tell her he had seen Kikyou. In his own way, he had been trying to protect her.

Kagome found it odd that her mother didn’t answer her when they got home, until Taro whined softly. “What is it baby?”

He’s here mama,” Taro replied.

“Go get you father, right now,” Kagome commanded urgently.

“I don’t think so, bitch,” Her ex-husband said and he grabbed Taro as he headed for the door.

Kagome didn’t even have time to say a word before he rammed the knife in his free hand straight into Taro’s stomach, twisted it, and then threw him to the floor.

“No!” Kagome screamed. She tried to get to Taro, only to be grabbed by the hair and dragged from the room. “Let me go! Taro! INUYASHA!”

Kagome was cut off as her ex-husband’s fist connected with the side of her face, knocking her from her feet and making her head swim. For brief moment she was thankful that she had suffered such treatment before, since it allowed her to remain conscious.

InuYasha was once again sitting in the Goshinboku, hoping that this would be the day Kagome returned, when suddenly a sharp pain tore threw his chest. What the... His thoughts cut off as Kagome’s voice reached him. She was calling for him. Kagome... She’s in trouble.

He jumped down and straight into the well. He came out the other side and the first scent that reached him threatened to unhinge him completely. Thick and heavy, the scent of Taro’s blood turned his stomach. Then he caught wind of the bastard that had hurt Kagome.

He entered the kitchen and found his son lying against the cabinets, and his mind refused to believe what his nose was telling him. He refused to allow it to be true. His son was not dead, and that was the end of it as far as he was concerned. InuYasha could hear Kagome in the other room.

Kagome tried to get up, only to find herself pinned to the floor by a body much larger and stronger than her own. “I’m the one who decides when we’re through, you fucking whore.”

He reached under her skirt and ripped off her panties. Kagome tried everything she could think of to get free. She had to get to Taro, but it was no use. Her arms were pinned over her head, her wrists bruising under his grip. He freed himself from his pants and forced her legs apart.

“No! Get off of me!” Kagome cried.

Suddenly the weight left her as a snarling growl filled her ears. “Get the fuck away from my mate, you son of a bitch,” InuYasha yelled as he threw the man across the room and into the wall.

Kagome jumped up and ran to InuYasha who was about to lay into her ex-husband with his claws. “Taro... InuYasha, is he all right?” InuYasha looked at her and she shook her head. His eyes were haunted. “No... No, no, no, no. He’s going to fine. Damn it, InuYasha, say it. Say he’s going to be all right.”

“Kagome...” InuYasha said quietly. “He...”

Kagome slapped him. “Shut up. Don’t say it, don’t you dare. He’s fine.” Kagome clutched his haori in her fists as she sobbed. “He’s fine. Please, tell me, just say it. Tell me he’s going to be okay, please.”

InuYasha held her. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry...”

“Oh my god,” Asami gasped as she came in the front door. “What happened here?”

“InuYasha please, he’s our baby. You have to make it okay, you have to do something. You promised... you promised,” Kagome pleaded.

“Where is Taro?” Asami demanded as she approached the couple. “Where is he?”

InuYasha’s eyes settled in the direction of the kitchen and Asami looked inside. She fell to her knees and sobbed into her hands. InuYasha let go of Kagome and picked up the unconscious man on the floor by his pants. He left the house without a word and Kagome knew he was going to kill the man who had murdered their son.

She went over to Taro and pulled the knife out of his body. She lifted him out of the blood and carried him over to the table. With a damp rag she cleaned the blood that had run out of his mouth from his face and the blood from his arms and hands.

“Help me clean this up, mama,” Kagome said, her voice flat.

“Kagome, we can’t, we have to call the police,” her mother protested.

“InuYasha is taking care of it. There won’t be any thing for the police to find,” Kagome replied.

InuYasha came back in a few minutes later and rinsed his hands in the running water of the sink. “Stay here, Kagome. I am going to fix this, I promise.” He carefully lifted their son into his arms.

“How?” Kagome asked.

“Sesshomaru,” he replied, and with that he was gone.

Asami noticed the fragile hope in Kagome’s eyes. “What did he mean? I thought his brother hated him. How can he possibly help?”

“Sesshomaru has a sword, the Tenseiga. It can resurrect the dead as long as their spirit hasn’t already been taken to the other side,” Kagome replied.

InuYasha raced through the forest as fast as he had ever run before, spurned on by the slight weight in his arms. His reached out with his senses, trying to catch any trace of his half brother. The sun was close to setting when he finally caught the scent he had been searching for.

“I warned you, little brother,” Sesshomaru said without turning. “Why have you sought me out? You failed to protect your whelp. It is none of my concern.”

“Damn you, bastard,” InuYasha growled. “At least fucking look me in the eye and tell me that you won’t save my son, your nephew, our oyaji’s flesh and blood.”

Sesshomaru turned. Both brothers saw the sword at his hip pulse, pleading to be used.

“I know you hate me, Sesshomaru, that you think I’m nothing but a pathetic half breed, not worthy of father’s blood; but he hasn’t done anything to anyone to deserve to die like this, please,” InuYasha said. “Are you really going to let our father’s grandson be killed at the hands of a human?”

“Explain,” Sesshomaru commanded.

“Kagome isn’t from another land. She’s from another time, in the future. She had Taro in her era and married a human man thinking I was with Kikyou,” InuYasha told him. “He beat her for protecting our pup from him, for refusing to let him lay a hand on my son. She left him and freed herself from him by the laws of her time. He is the one who killed Taro.”

“Why were you not there to ensure their safety?” Sesshomaru asked.

“Because she was in her time to get away from me, because she was upset about the things you said to her,” InuYasha spat. “I almost didn’t get there in time to stop him from dishonoring her.”

“And this human, where is he now?” Sesshomaru pressed.

“Where do you think asshole? In hell where he belongs,” InuYasha replied.

“Then you have avenged him. Put your son to rest and move on with your life. Your mate is young and can whelp you another half breed disgrace to chichi-ue’s blood,” Sesshomaru said coldly and turned away.

“You can have the Tetsusaiga,” InuYasha offered quietly. “And if Totosai can’t get rid of the barrier, you can have my arm as well.”

Sesshomaru turned around his face as stoic as ever. “And if I demand your life as payment?”

“If that is what it will take for you to use your sword on my son, then it's yours,” InuYasha said. “I would only ask that you see that Taro is returned to the bone eaters well in my forest so that he can return to Kagome.”

“Put him on the ground,” Sesshomaru commanded.

InuYasha gently lowered Taro to the earth and stepped back as Sesshomaru drew the Tenseiga. The sword pulsed in his hands and he could see the small underworld imps with their chains around the boy's body. He slashed through them and the young hanyou drew a shuddering breath.

InuYasha wasted no time pulling the boy into his arms; a soft growling filled the clearing as he nuzzled his son’s neck.

Taro cried softly in his father’s arms. “Papa, where’s mama? Did he hurt her?”

“It’s okay,” InuYasha soothed. “Your mama’s fine, or she will be, once she knows you’re all right.”

Taro looked at the tall youkai standing off to the side. “Papa, is he your brother? Ojii-san said I’m supposed to tell my uncle something about his mother.”

“Ojii-san?” InuYasha asked.

Taro nodded. “He was with my other obaa-san.”

“Did you see them?” InuYasha asked.

“Not really. It’s hard to explain. I could feel them,” Taro tried. His brow furrowed. “There was a name I was supposed to remember... Izayoi... that’s it. He said tell him that Izayoi was his mother’s reincarnation, and that she wasn’t supposed to die when she did. An evil youkai twisted the strands of fate, and so they were given another chance to be together.”

“Well you told him,” InuYasha said. “As much as he wishes it wasn’t the truth, he’s my brother, half brother anyway. I have to take care of something, and then we’ll go see your mama okay?”

“Okay papa,” Taro replied.

InuYasha got up and walked over to Sesshomaru. “You never said... what is your price, my sword or my life? I may only be a half breed, but I will keep my word.”

“Take your pup to his mother,” Sesshomaru said. “Try to be more cautious in the future. I do not know if the sword will work a second time. It has never been tried.” Sesshomaru turned into his energy form and was gone before InuYasha could respond.

Sesshomaru returned to his ward and his retainer and stood looking out from the cliff top. He had despised InuYasha for so long because he represented his father’s betrayal of his own mother. An inu youkai was loyal to his mate beyond a single lifetime. He knew well that had his father died defending his own mother as he knew her, he would not have scorned him or his choice. If what his nephew said was indeed true, and Izayoi had been his mother’s reincarnation, then for his father not to be with her would have been a betrayal. The sword made of his father’s fang pulsed at his hip.

Chichi-ue, did he speak true? Another pulse. If so, then why would you keep such information from me? To what end?

Taro pulled at his father’s pant leg. “Papa can we go now?”

InuYasha nodded his head and picked up his son. “What do you say we stop by home first and get you some clean clothes, so you can look nice for your mother and grandmother?”

“Okay, papa,” Taro replied.
