Chapter 2: The Return of a Hanyou and the Shattering of the Jewel

Inu-Yasha stared at the village below him. It had been nearly four years since he had checked up on his old friends. After Kagome had left, Inu-Yasha couldn't stay. There were too many reminders of her. So, he had said goodbye to the others and then took off. He had done his part to protect the jewel and felt that he needed a break. He smiled as he caught site of Sango and Miroku. He also saw Shippo with Kaede. Inu-Yasha continued to walk to the village. His thoughts turned to Kagome. To tell the truth, he missed her. Inu-Yasha reached up to touch the rosary that he had replaced around his neck after he was out of Kagome's sight. Just below the rosary sat the Shikon jewel. Inu-Yasha was so deep in thought that he failed to realize he had reached the village.

"Inu-Yasha," Shippo yelled as he ran and hugged the startled hanyou that he had missed.

At Shippou's yell, Sango, Miroku, and Kaede came to where the hanyou was scowling at the kitsune who wouldn't let him go. They laughed at the scene before them. Shippou finally let go of Inu-Yasha and dragged him to Kaede's hut.

"Well Inu-Yasha, ye look well," Kaede.

Inu-Yasha only nodded at the comment since he was too tired to criticize the old miko. The five of them talked until nightfall about how they were doing and the adventures they had shared while they were apart. Although they were at peace, something oppressing hung in the air getting ready to bear down on them.

A youkai lurked in the shadows in the forest just outside the village. She sniffed the air and scanned her surroundings for what she was seeking.

So, Inu-Yasha has come back. Now I can seek my revenge against him and claim what my father could not. I will be the most powerful youkai in these lands.

The youkai signaled to her minions. They began to attack the village.

Screams filled the night as the demons attacked and destroyed everything in their path. Inu-Yasha ran out of the hut and drew the Tetsusaiga. The others followed to see what was going on. At the sight of the attack, Miroku, Kaede, and Shippo ran for cover seeing that they couldn't do anything to help. Sango ran to her hut to grab her Hiroikotsu and to wake Kilala so that she could help get the other villages out of the attack. Inu-Yasha jumped onto the air to attack the nearest demon, but was knocked out of the sky by a blast of wind. He turned to see his attacker.

"Kagura," he hissed between his clenched teeth.

"I'm glad you remember me Inu-Yasha. For, I am going to destroy you and take what Naraku was too weak to take. I will take what is rightfully mine."

"Never," Inu-Yasha said as he stood up and tried to attack again.

He was once again knocked to the ground.

"I don't think you understand my power."

Kagura walked over to Inu-Yasha and yanked the Shikon jewel from around his neck.

"The Shikon jewel is now mine. I will be invincible with its power," Kagura said in triumph.

Kaede stepped into sight.

"I won't let ye use the jewel for evil. Ye will never get its power," the miko said as she shot an arrow strait at the jewel.

It pierced the jewel and split it in Kagura's hands. The shards seemed to jump from her hands and fly to different places across the sky as it had done before when Kagome had split the jewel. Two of the shards fell to the ground. Kagura grabbed one and Inu-Yasha quickly grabbed the other before Kagura could get her hands on it. Kagura scowled visibly and retreated, taking her minions with her into the forest. Inu-Yasha turned towards Kaede who had sat down on the ground.

"What did you do that for?"

"It's the only way we could have stopped her Inu-Yasha. The jewel would have completed her power and would have made her unstoppable. She became more powerful after you left. She was hoping to kill you to get her revenge for killing Naraku. I am too old to search for the scattered shards. Ye must go to the dry well and find Kagome. She can help ye to find the shards once again."

Inu-Yasha nodded as he took off towards the well. He paused at the edge to think. He would see Kagome again. That is if he ever received the courage to actually go through the well to the future. He wondered what Kagome had been doing the past four years and he also thought about the last time they were together.

"Does she still love me," Inu-Yasha asked to no one in particular as he looked up at the starry sky above.

He shook the thought out of his head.

Get a grip; you have to go get her whether you want to or not.

With that Inu-Yasha focused on his main task. He sat at the edge of the well and looked in.

I hope this thing still works.

With that he jumped into the well and felt himself travel to where he knew Kagome would be.
