~~Chapter 28: Cold Bride~~

~~~3 Years Later~~~
`Mrs. Von Villarreal'
Kagome watched as the engagement ring on the left hand gleamed in the sunlight of her room. Vincent had proposed to her six months ago and their wedding date was next Saturday. Kagome took in a deep breath as she looked at her picture of her and Vincent sitting on her night table. It had been six years since she had run away from Japan, six years since she had left InuYasha, six years since she had decided never to go back to him. Kagome sighed softly.
`I'm twenty-four, I'm graduated, I work at Prada, and I'm getting married to a wonderful man. Shouldn't I be the happiest woman ever?'
After her graduation, Kagome had decided to stay with Victoria, Emma, and Sharei in the house. After all, the three girls were like her sisters. Kagome opened up her old Sengoku Jidai diary. Very rarely did she have the courage to read her thoughts of when she was traveling through the well. She flipped through the pages, somehow feeling as though she was still fifteen, still experiencing the awe and adventure that she knew she had felt when she was traveling. She didn't want to fully remember, she blocked out those memories and they had stopped coming. The memories she did have her jumbled, but not as much as they had been when she first started to remember. Sometimes she got headaches, when something triggered a memory.
She reached in to her drawer, reached for her picture frame. She let her fingers travel over InuYasha. `InuYasha Morikami, how are you?'
`I'm sure he's fine…'
Kagome smiled softly as she set the picture down. She stood up and stretched before flopping back on to the bed.
`You don't understand do you? You're so stupid, Kagome. You say you're smart, you say you're strong, brave, and everything else, but newsflash human wench, you're not. You're stupid…s-t-u-p-i-d, stupid.'
Kagome frowned at the voice's sudden outburst. `What?'
`You can't follow your heart can you? Don't you know that Vincent and you don't belong together? Don't you know that you were born to be with InuYasha?'
`I form my destiny…'
`And your heart picks one man and its your job to go to him and you're such an airhead that you don't realize that your heart chose InuYasha the moment you set eyes on him. Your adventures helped you and you made that Kami-forsaken wish and made him wait when you know what? He was building a house for you! He wasn't with Kikyo. And you know what else? InuYasha never betrayed you and you know it. You ran away because you're a baka…a few eggs short of a dozen, not the brightest crayon in the box, the unsharpest knife in the kitchen.'
`I get it!'
`Okay, good. And you know what else, Kagome? You. Will. Die. You will kick the bucket at twenty-four if you marry Vincent. A youkai and his mate cannot be separated. Distance they can stand, but if you give yourself to another man, you'll kill yourself and InuYasha. Kiss your ass goodbye, baka…people will be coming to your funeral for your next birthday.'
`You're wrong!'
`Am I?'
`I'm over InuYasha…I don't love him anymore. Vincent is my future, he's the one I'm going I'm going to marry'
The voice didn't answer and the loneliness swept over Kagome again. “Kagome?”
“What's wrong with me?”
Victoria sunk down besides her, tucking strands of her blonde hair behind her ear. “Nothing.” She answered, shrugging.
“Look,” Kagome handed her friend her picture frame. Victoria examined the picture cryptically and chose her words when Kagome stared at her.
“You look in love, Kagome,” she said, taking the picture frame of Kagome and Vincent off the night table. Victoria showed Kagome the picture. “You look content.”
“Victoria…”
“Kagome, I'm not saying you shouldn't marry Vincent, I'm saying…choose carefully. He,” she pointed at InuYasha. “Has been in Japan for six years, away from you. We don't know if he still loves you. He,” She pointed at Vincent. “He adores you and will run to Europe and back if you ask him to.”
Kagome bit her lip. “Vincent is my future, InuYasha was my past.”
`A romance that dates back five-hundred-nine years ago.'
“Drive, Kagome, drive!” Sharei yelled, almost laughing when her friend jerked the steering wheel.
Victoria rolled her eyes from the passenger seat. The four girls were on their way to get their final dress fitting. Kagome's big day was quickly approaching. Emma was busy filing her nails in the back. Sharei was busy poking the back of Victoria's head. Victoria turned around and glared. “Stop Sharei, jeez, you act like a two year old.”
“Reason why she's single,” Emma mumbled, rolling her hazel eyes.
“I'm boycotting men. Kagome, I think you should to.” Sharei said, wiggling her eyebrows. Her green eyes sparkled. “I'm so much happier, I'm free.”
Kagome rolled her eyes. “You can boycott men, let me marry mine.”
“Go right for it,” Sharei said, nodding quickly. “I'll enjoy casual sex.”
“Sharei!” Kagome's cheeks reddened. Why did her friend enjoy that so much?
“Kagome, we're all big girls here.” Emma said, putting the nail filer down.
“I think we're about ready for radio.” Victoria said, turning on the car's radio and putting up the volume. Kagome sighed.
A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't I can look at this the same
But all the miles that separate
Have disappeared now when I dreaming of your face
Kagome glanced at the radio, gripping the steering wheel tightly. `Stupid radio'
I'm here without you, baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you, baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you, baby
You're still with me in my dreams
And tonight, its only you and me
The miles just keep rolling
As the people leave their way to say `hello'
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go
Oh, oh…yeah…yeah
InuYasha's golden eyes popped in to her head, his fuzzy ears, twitching and reacting to his emotions. Her vision blurred and she quickly blinked. Victoria tilted her head a she watched Kagome's knuckles turn white as she harshly gripped the steering wheel. `Kami…no'
I'm here without you, baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you, baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you, baby
you're still with in my dreams
And tonight, girl its only you and me
Everything I know
And anywhere I go
It gets hard, but you won't take away my love
And when I'm the last one, falls
When its all set and done
It gets hard…
But you won't… take… away
My love
Ohhh…ohhh…ohhh
Kagome jerked the car to the side of the road, banged her head against the steering wheel. Victoria gasped. “Kagome!”
“My God, Kagome…” Sharei mumbled, wincing as she watched Kagome's shoulders shake with the force of her sobs.
I'm here without you, baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you, baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you, baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight, girl, its only you and me
“InuBaka,” Kagome hit the wheel. Victoria and Emma looked equally confused. Sharei leaned over the seat. She was the only one who spoke Japanese.
“Kagome? InuBaka?”
Kagome glared at the radio. The announcer babbled on before the next song started to play. Kagome's heart broke when she heard the music.
I swear…
By the moon and the stars in the skies
and I swear like the shadow that's by your side…
I see the questions in your eyes,
I know what's waiting on your mind.
You can be sure I know my part,
'Cuz I stand beside you through the years,
you'll only cry those happy tears,
and though I made mistakes
I'll never break your heart
`The song!' Kagome wailed before turning off the radio. `Why would I hear those now? One week before my wedding?'
“Kagome?” Emma poked her shoulder, hazel eyes worried over her best friend. Kagome sighed softly, passing the back of her hand over her eyes.
“I'm such a crybaby.”
“--- everyone will know you're my New York princess.”
Kagome made a face. “I'm sorry guys, its just…I don't know what came over me.”
“Its okay to have pre-wedding jitters.” Emma said soothingly, putting a hand on Kagome's shoulders. .
“I know,” Kagome said softly. “I love Vincent…I'm happy. But InuYasha…”
“The one that cheated on you?”
“…Yes”
“What about him?
“Maybe you should go back to Tokyo?” Victoria said. Kagome shook her head, wiping the remains of her tears before she turned the car back on.
“No,” She sighed. “I left him, I ran away from him without giving him a chance and for that---I wouldn't forgive me for. Besides, its been six years, I'm getting married and I'm forming a life with Vincent. He's the perfect man.”
“How much do you think he loved you?” Victoria insisted. Kagome tried not to glare at her friend. Why did Victoria always push InuYasha out of Kagome? She always tried to make Kagome talk about him.
Kagome turned on the road and continued to the bridal store. She watched for cars before merging on to another intersection. “He said we were ma---soul mates.” Kagome said, stepping on the gas as she calmed her nerves.
“Did you think you were?” Sharei asked.
Kagome sighed. “Yes. I thought we would be together forever.”
“There are many divorces in this time, Kagome,”
She nodded. “I know, but he was different about it.”
“Have you ever slept with Vincent?” Emma asked cautiously.
“No,” Kagome replied, putting in to the parking lot of the bridal store. “I haven't. He's tried, but I've said no.”
“Did you ever sleep with InuYasha?”
Kagome's cheeks flushed. “He's been my only one.”
“That's sweet.” Sharei said.
Kagome made a face before slumping her shoulders.
Kagome sighed softly before Victoria rolled her blue eyes. “Cold feet, Kagome?”
“Freezing,” She replied, making a face.
“My, my, my, Kagome, you look gorgeous,”
Kagome looked at herself in the large mirror before her, seeing herself dressed in her white gown. She bit her bottom lip. Nancy Von Villarreal, Vincent's mother, gave Kagome a warm smile. “You make Andrew and me so proud. My beautiful daughter-in-law.”
“Thank you, Nancy,” Kagome said, smoothing the top of her strapless dress. The material fell around her bottom, fitting her perfectly.
“Your tiara, Ms. Higurashi,” Emma winked at her before handing Kagome her platinum tiara. “Pick up your hair, the veil attaches under your ponytail.”
Yes, her hair would be picked up completely. The tiara could sit on the front of her hair and the veil would be connected underneath, flowing down her back with sparkles that twinkled shyly in the light.
The colors of the wedding were a very light shade of lavender and silver. Victoria was her maid of honor, Emma, Sharei, and Samantha---who could not make the fitting---were her bride's maids. Victoria's dress was a silver and lavender, halter-top like design. The thick straps of the dress tied to the back of her neck and flowed down her body to the floor. The soft lavender color swirled in to the dress in the most graceful way, mixing the two colors together perfectly.
The other dresses were lavender, strapless dresses that clung to the girl's bodies enough to fully outline them before gently flowing away from the body at their hips. Kagome watched as Nancy fussed over the other girls. `My dream come true.'
`Oh, that's rich…'
She smiled sadly. “Kagome, darling, you look like your about to faint? Jitters?”
Kagome looked at Nancy and she nodded. “Yes.”
“It's okay. Vincent is nervous also. He's marrying an excellent woman. A perfect match.”
She looked in the mirror again. Somehow, she always pictures her dress as a corset-like top, with swirling white designs that hugged her top tightly. She always pictured her dress to have a lot of layers for her bottom, each layer adding to the thickness of the dress and to the majesty of it. The bottom would look soft, wavy, and silvery glitter would cover it…just enough to make it sparkle. The dress would be long, covering her feet and dragging across the aisle. She always pictured her veil would be over her hairstyle, flowing over her shoulders and her tiara would be sparkling on top of her head. And as she walked down the aisle...
`I think this is perfect. Vincent will love it.'
`Of course he will…he loves everything about you.'
`And I love him also…'
`Really?
`…Of course. Why wouldn't I?'
Kagome hopped off the pedestal in front of the large mirrors. “Nancy, it's perfect.”
The tall woman smiled softly. “You look like a dream, Kagome.”
She blushed. `Like a dream?'
Kagome looked in to the mirror and sighed softly, smiling. `It's just…'
`Not perfect?'
`No…it's perfect. Everything is perfect.'
