Something Short of Paradise

“Ok so that's…. two hundred twenty three in the bank… Is that it? Ugghhh!” Kagome sighed collapsing on the table. “Its ok, Ill just have to find another job and work on my days off for awhile….” She convinced herself as she sat up and closed her folder. “Yay.” She said sarcastically and leaned back. “Inuyasha got my apartment mostly fixed, which is a big help, but still, with the rent and utilities its going to be at least about one fifty, that's IF we are lucky.” She mumbled crossing her arms. She looked around the empty guest house sadly. She leaned forward rubbing her forehead. “No clue as to what I'm going to do for Kin's birthday coming up soon. He wants a party so I might have to juggle four jobs.” She sighed once again and got out of her chair turning off the bright lamp she had been working over. Kin was having a “sleep-over” with Yash tonight, which she decided to use to her advantage to check the balance. She walked back and laid down on the queen bed. She wanted to give Kin a nice party, but right now they had enough for two months rent and maybe a grocery trip, if they were damn lucky. Not to mention if anything happened, like either of them got sick they would be under so quick they wouldn't even stand a chance. Even now she was unsure about keeping them above water. She only made about 300 a month now, so she would need to work on her days off to at least make the other 200. But it was hard to find a job to pay even that without a college degree. Not to mention the stress. Here she was planning a wedding for a man she loved to get married to someone else. Just one day and she could already feel herself breaking down. She and Inuyasha had always talked of their future dreams, not it seemed like Inuyasha had achieved them all, except marrying her. She on the other hand, had her life go in a completely different direction. She loved Kin, he was her baby, and she figured, it was for the better. And if worst came to worst she could give Inuyasha custody. Tears flooded her eyes as she thought about losing Kin. She did what she did so many times before. She cried, unconciousness taking hold 3 hours later.

Kin giggled with Inuyasha as they flipped through a photo album Kagome had made, and brought over earlier. Kin pointed to a picture with Kagome crouched down next to him, a blue, red, and yellow backpack on in front of a wall with a mural on it.

“That was first day school! Mommy took me out to pizza after.” He said happily.

“First day of preschool?” He asked.

“Yeah! I go to kindergarten soon.” He said proudly.

“Wow, you're almost an adult!”

“Mommy still calls me baby boy.” He pouted.

“Well, you are to her. That won't ever change.” Inuyasha laughed. They flipped through some more, coming to the end. The last picture was one of Kagome laying on the floor next to Kin while he was playing. “Who took this?” He asked.

“Uncle Miro!”

“Really? You like Uncle Miro?” He asked smiling.

“Yea. But he always made mommy sad.” This caught Inuyasha's attention.

“Why.”

“Dunno. When he came, he talk to mommy and mommy would get sad.” He said holding his bear close. “Is mommy sick?”

“No, why do you ask?”

“I hear Uncle Miro say Antie Sango mommy wasn't gonna make it throw.” (I heard Uncle Miroku say to Auntie Sango mommy wasn't going to make it through.) Inuyasha could fell Kin's sadness which only ignited his own. “PLEASE DADDY! DON LEAVE US! MOMMY IS HAPPY WHEN YOU WITH HER!” Kin cried. Inuyasha winced, his own tears coming.

“Kin I can't do that.” He sighed sadly.

“Do you hate us?” Inuyasha looked at him softly grabbing him, holding him close.

“Oh Kin, I don't hate you. I love you both so much.”

“Then don leave us daddy!” He cried into his shirt.

“Kin, my daddy needs me. I have to leave you two. But I love you both very much. Come on, lets go to bed.” He grunted getting up, still holding Kin. He set the book on the nightstand and pulled back the covers climbing in. Kin cried himself to sleep on Inuyasha's chest. Inuyasha stared up at his ceiling as he thought. `Uncle Miro say Antie Sango mommy wasn't gonna make it throw.' Why hadn't he been there? He was such an idiot. He swallowed the lump in his throat as tears slipped down his face.

The next couple of days went by, Inuyasha and Kagome were decidedly quiet around the other. Both dreaded the upcoming day, when Inuyasha was no longer hers, theirs. All hope of him leaving Kikyo, and coming back to her gone. Neither could believe the wedding was two days away. Everything was all set up, menus printed, guests rsvped, suits and dresses in, and of course the wedding dress. Kagome still couldn't believe it.

Kagome opened one of the boxes that arrived that was as tall as her finding the outfits in there. She kinda liked the whole red tie, white shirt, black jacket thing. She wasn't sure about the blood red poofy dresses that came after. She was surprised when the other box held a wedding dress. Kagome turned to Izayoi.

“What is this? I thought it was a tradition to wear the family dress?” Izayoi sighed sadly.

“I offered it to her, but she didn't like it. She said it was too old and she wouldn't wear it.”

“That's horrible.” Kagome cried.

“Well it is her choice, besides, it doesn't matter.” Kagome could tell by her voice and her face though that it did. Kagome's heart went out to her.

Kikyo would be coming home soon, which meant Kagome had to leave. She was more then fine with that, in fact she was worried what might happen if she and Kin stayed. Kagome put the finishing touches on what was left before she packed up their stuff loading it into their old car. Thank god it still ran, though it looked like might collapse at any moment. Inuyasha followed her with the other bag. Kagome grunted setting it in the trunk, surprised when Inuyasha set one down next to her. She looked over locking a gaze with him. His eyes, they held so much emotion, it scared her. She was afraid, she knew she would never in her life find any eyes like his. Not only the color but the love he held for her and only her in them. She could remember times when she could see their future dancing in his eyes. Even now she could see it. Only now she saw them apart, lonely, longing, sad. She looked away thanking him and closing the trunk door. She moved past him, bumping his shoulder slightly. His hand bolted out grabbing her wrist and holding it.

“Please, let me pay child support. It's the least I can do.” He whispered. Her bangs hid her face as his did his.

“No, it's fine Kouga will be supporting us.”

“I find that hard to believe since you are no longer engaged to him.” Kagome gasped turning around to face him.

“How did you know?” He grabbed her other hand by the wrist holding it up. Kagome looked at the heart opal stone surrounded by small blue diamonds on the platinum band that he fingered,

“This was a one of a kind ring I had made for you once upon a time. Did you honestly think I wouldn't notice?” Kagome looked away. Her body shook as sobs racked up in her body.

“Please, let me go.”

“Kagome let me…”

“I don't want your help!” She screamed wrenching herself free and taking a few steps back.

“GOD DAMNIT KAGOME! STOP BEING SO STUBBORN AND ASK FOR HELP!”

“I DON'T NEED ANYTHING FROM YOU OR YOUR FAMILY!”

“HES MY SON TOO KAGOME!” He growled stepping forward. “STOP THINKING OF ONLY YOURSELF AND YOUR PRIDE AND LET ME HELP TAKE CARE OF MY SON!”

“I DON'T HAVE ANY PRIDE LEFT INUYASHA!” She cried as tears streamed down her face. “YOU THINK I ONLY THINK OF MYSELF? THEN TELL ME WHY I TOLD EVERYONE I WAS SUCH A WHORE I SLEPT WITH TOO MANY GUYS TO KNOW WHO THE DAD WAS! TELL ME WHY I FOOLISHLY BELIEVED YOU WOULD COME AND SAVE ME! TELL ME WHY I DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL AND TOOK UP OVER 15 JOBS ALREADY! TELL ME WHY I DIDN'T JUST HAVE AN ABORTION!” She fell down to the ground and buried her face in her hands. “Tell me why, on those frequent nights that I needed your touch so much I didn't go to another man… I didn't let any other touch me in the ways I let you. I didn't let another man into my heart like I let you. GOD I WAS SO STUPID TO BELIEVE YOU WOULD KNOCK ON THE DOOR ONE NIGHT AND COME BACK FOR ME! COME BACK FOR US!” She sobbed on the ground. Inuyasha looked down at her, his eyes also clouding with tears. He bent down on one knee and pulled her close.

“God I'm so sorry. I never meant to make you cry Kagome.” He whispered holding her close to his body rocking her ever so slightly as she cried herself to sleep in his arms.

Images from last night came into his head. “I hear Uncle Miro say Antie Sango mommy wasn't gonna make it throw.” “PLEASE DADDY! DON LEAVE US! MOMMY IS HAPPY WHEN YOU WITH HER!” God what had he done? Kagome had been such a fiery spirit in high school and now she was a broken woman. IT was there in her eyes just how broken she had become. The years of pain, being alone, waiting, tortured her slowly until it was almost gone. Slowly he picked her up and put her in the car to dive them home. Their final goodbye. It didn't feel real until now. The wedding was only a few days away and Kikyo would be coming home tonight. Tonight was the night he would be out of their lives forever.

 

 

 

 

A/n: Yeah I know sad chappie, I'm sure there are ppl out there going GOD INUYASHA WTF ARE YOU DOING! And others who are like GOD YOU STUPID AUTHOR! Oh well anyway I figure I will probably end it by chapter 20 or so and I wont forget the Epi. So about 4-5 more chappies left. Also I don't know if I will do a sequel to this or not. Probably not cause I will end up slaughtering it -_-. I am working on a few stories now and so I am going to leave it up to you guys:

Inuyasha is a pirate constantly on sea with his “trades” leaving Kagome who is pregnant with twins at home, at least until she sneaks on board. The twins arrival brings not only happieness but fear. The two are half miko half demon making them the most powerful weapon to evil ever. They could wipe out entire fleets of humans and mikos as well as demons and their powers threaten to comsume their lives as well. It's a race against time and evil to find the sacred jewel to free them of this power.
