Chapter 2- The Devil Comes to Dinner

Kagome stared at her reflected image in the mirror. The pale peach of her dress showed off her darkening tan and brought out her natural highlights. She pulled her hair smoothly away from her face into a cluster of curls at the nape of her neck. She looked poised, sophisticated and calm.

If only she felt that way! Her insides had been churning all afternoon, which was absolutely ridiculous. ‘What possible difference could it make that Inuyasha Sano would be there for dinner?’ she asked herself. Unfortunately she could come up with a half dozen reasons before she had to draw breath. She knew him too well. Depending on his mood, he could be everything a hostess could want in a polite dinner guest. Other times, he could be perfectly rambunctious. Funny, of course, but rambunctious. And he knew entirely too many things about her that he could bring up if he felt the urge. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d embarrassed her in front of someone important. A reluctant smile played on her face when she thought of some of the things he’d done in the past. He really did have a wicked sense of humor.

She realized that she was being a coward, hovering upstairs when she’d heard him arrive at least 15 minutes earlier. Kagome had justified her delay to herself, knowing that her father would monopolize Inuyasha for a while. Sooner or later, she would have to face him. Glancing at her watch, she decided now was a good time as any. Sesshomaru should be arriving soon.

Sure enough, she found Inuyasha and her father in a heated conversation. They’d always gotten along well. Her dad had gone to all of his games and stood on the sidelines cheering. He was a natural athlete and they enjoyed seeing him play. But that was years ago, just another part of her childhood.

Inuyasha stood up as she walked into the room. “Wow!” he said in a reverent voice.

Kagome couldn’t help it; she began to laugh. “That’s one of the things I’ve always liked about you, Yash,” she said sarcastically. “You were always so articulate, with such an artful turn of phrase.”

He sauntered over to her and took both her hands, staring down at her. “And that laugh is one of the things I’ve always liked about you. I had almost given up hope that it was still around.”

She could not ignore how well Inuyasha looked in his red dress shirt and black slacks. The outfit set off his silvery good looks. ‘Let’s face it,’ she thought, ‘he looks like every woman’s dream of the man she hoped would appear in her life and take her away.’ No doubt that was one of the reasons “Hope for Today” had become one of the most successful soap operas. The doorbell served as a reprieve from Kagome’s musings. “Oh, there’s Sesshy now,” she said, unconsciously betraying her relief.

Inuyasha frowned slightly as he mouthed “Sesshy?” at her father. Seikai only shook his head. Inuyasha turned to watch her return to the hall. For just a moment, he’d seen a glimpse of the Kagome he’d known forever, but then she’d disappeared behind the polite, sedate facade of the woman he’d seen this afternoon. He heard murmured voices in the hallway and an intimate male chuckle that caused the hair on his neck to rise in protest. He determinedly ignored the fact that Kagome’s lipstick was smudged. When she returned to the room, leading a man who must have been Sesshomaru Kenshin, seeing as how he had a lipstick imprint on his cheek. Kagome blushed as Sesshomaru swiped at it absentmindedly.

Inuyasha wasn’t prepared for the shock he received when he saw Kagome’s fiancé. There was no denying that he was in his late thirties, and the mark of time had added character to his face. What hit Inuyasha like a fist in his gut was that Sesshomaru looked enough like him to be a close relative. They were both approximately the same height and build, and their hair was the exact shade of silver, which was not very common. They even had the same amber eyes. Inuyasha felt as though he were looking into the future, at what he would look like in another thirteen years, if he was full blooded.

And this was the man Kagome had chosen to marry.

After the introductions were made, Inuyasha said “I’ve looked forward to meeting you, Sesshomaru. I’ve heard some very good things about you.” He didn’t miss the exchange of glances between Sesshomaru and Kagome.

“It’s good to meet a friend of Kagome’s, Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru replied in a deep emotionless voice that Inuyasha was sure could be used to great effect in a courtroom. “Unfortunately, I’m at a slight disadvantage. She’s never mentioned you to me.”

Inuyasha glanced at Kagome in surprise, and acknowledged to himself the pain Sesshomaru’s remark caused him. She truly dismissed him from her life. Outwardly, he smirked.

Kagome couldn’t meet Inuyasha’s eyes. She smiled at Sesshomaru and said, “Oh, I’m sure I told you about Inuyasha, Sesshy. You’ve probably just forgotten. He lived next door for years.”

“I’m sure you have, love,” Sesshomaru said, holding her possessively to his side. “It must have slipped my mind.”

Inuyasha was unprepared for the almost despairing rage that swept over him at the sight of Sesshomaru holding his Kagome so intimately. His blood boiled. But what had he expected, for Kami’s sake? She was marrying the man, wasn’t she? He found himself clenching his teeth in an effort to control his emotions. Hitomi earned his undying gratitude when she came into the room and announced that dinner was ready.

Dinner was almost as bad. Inuyasha sat across the table from the engaged couple, a silent witness to their constant smiles and murmurs. Seikai and Hitomi kept the conversation going, and Inuyasha determinedly joined him, knowing he would have to deal with his pain later. However, he felt like slicing through Sesshomaru’s body with his bare hands. If he didn’t relax, his demonic blood would take over and that wouldn’t do at all. His ears swivelled as he tried to keep up with Kagome’s conversation with Sesshomaru.

Kagome began to relax about midway through dinner. As usual, her mother had outdone herself with the meal and the men were obviously enjoying it. She had just felt the tension in the muscles along her spine ease when Inuyasha said, “Too bad you never learned to cook like your mom, Runt. Maybe she’ll take pity on dear old Sesshy and have you two over for dinner often.”

Sesshomaru glanced up from his meal and looked at Inuyasha with a threatening glint in his eye. “What did you call her? Runt?”

Inuyasha had the decency to look a little remorseful. “Sorry. I guess that just slipped out. It was a nickname I gave her years ago.”

Sesshomaru’s gaze warmed as it fell on Kagome. “I can think of many nicknames that I might choose for her, but nothing so revolting as that.”

“She was always small for her age, you know.,” Inuyasha said lightly. “I think she always hoped she’d catch up with me, but by the time we were teenagers, she knew she’d well and truly lost the race.” He studied Kagome for a moment and smiled, as though he’d just had an important revelation. “She’s always looked younger that her years, anyway, don’t you think so? She could easily pass for 18.”

Sesshomaru smiled at him condescendingly. “Oh, I don’t know. I’d hardly confuse her with one of her students, despite her height. She’s a very nicely endowed woman.”

“You would notice, you fucking cradle robber,” Inuyasha murmured. Sesshomaru merely glared at him.

“Thank you kindly, sir,” Kagome said.

“As for her cooking,” Sesshomaru continued. “Kagome doesn’t have to do anything she doesn’t want to. I’m not marrying her to gain a housekeeper.”

“Of course not,” Inuyasha agreed. With a perfectly angelic face but a wicked glint in his eyes, he went on. “I just hope you don’t mind the fact that she drools when she sleeps and she snores.”

The reactions of those around the table was a complete study of the range of human emotions. Seikai looked as though he was trying not to laugh while Hitomi looked shocked. Inuyasha sat there with a smug expression on his face and Kagome looked as if she could have easily committed murder. Sesshomaru showed the least reaction- just a slight narrowing of his eyes.

“I had no idea you knew Kagome quite that well.”

“Oh, ignore him. He’s just being a stupid, obnoxious prick,” Kagome answered angrily. “Our families used to go camping together when we were children. Inuyasha always used to accuse me of snoring, just to make me angry.”

“And it usually worked,” he replied with a smirk.

Lord knows he was right. She was struggling with her anger now, unwilling to let him know that once again, he had succeeded in riling her. She tried to laugh but wasn’t sure that anyone was fooled. “But not now. Your childish tricks no longer have any effect on me.”

Inuyasha leaned back in his chair and propped his feet on the table. “That’s good to know, Runt. That uncontrollable temper of yours used to get you into lots of trouble.”

“Temper?” Sesshomaru repeated, arching a brow. “You must have my Kagome confused with someone else. A more even tempered person, I’ve yet to meet.”

Inuyasha began to laugh, clutching his stomach with uncontrolled glee. “Are you in for a surprise, Sesshy?” He leaned forward and rested his arms on the table. “How long have you and Kagome known each other?”

“About a year, wouldn’t you say, dear?” Sesshomaru answered, turning to face Kagome.

“Something like that,” she muttered.

“And she’s never lost her temper?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

“How very interesting.”

“Only to you, Inuyasha dear,” Kagome said sarcastically. Then she stood and said with a smile, “I’ll clear for you, Mother. Who would like some cherry-chocolate cake?” She refuse to even glance at Inuyasha. No one could pass up such a temptation, so Kagome carried the dishes into the kitchen and began to slice the cake and place it on plates. She glances up when she heard the swinging door open, then frowned. “You don’t need to help, Inuyasha. I can manage.”

“I know, I just came in here to apologize.”

“You? Apologize?”

“Yeah. I’m sorry.”

“Well, it’s too late,” she replied as she turned away from him.

“Too late for what?”

“It’s too late for you to think I’m going to always say, ‘Oh that’s all right, Inuyasha, it doesn’t matter.’ You think you can say whatever shit you feel like, behave in whatever fucking manner you feel like, and all you have to do is smile that devastating, knee-weakening smile and I’ll forgive you. Fuck that.”

“Ah, Kagome. Temper, temper.”

“Shut up.”

“Wait a minute,” he paused as if he was considering a great mystery. “Knee-weakening?” Trust Inuyasha to pick up on her unfortunate choice of words.

“A figure of speech, Inuyasha. Nothing more.”

“Does my smile really affect you that way?”

“Would you like to get out of here?” She picked up two plated filled with cake and shoved them into his hands. “Make yourself useful.”

Kagome watched as Inuyasha laughingly returned to the dining room, looking for all the world as if the two had been in the kitchen laughing over old times instead of arguing.

Something tole her that the next week might have a certain lack of peace and serenity. She would count the days until the wedding. Surely after she and Sesshomaru were married, Inuyasha Sano would no longer have the ability to disrupt her life.

Kagome refused to ask herself why this would be so.
