-Chapter 04-
"You still seasick, mate?" Jack asked as Riku bent over the rail of
the Black Pearl for the third time that week.
Riku shrugged and wiped his mouth as Will and Elizabeth joined them.
He gave them a feeble wave, and sat on the steps leading up to the
ship's steering platform.
Elizabeth joined him. "Riku," she told him, "don't be sad. I'm sure
your friends will come for you. We'd sent a message, but I'm afraid
our options are rather limited."
"I hope you're right about Sora," Riku told her. "Because if I can't
get home, I'll probably die in less than a year."
"Don't say that," Elizabeth told him, encouragingly. "I'm sure you'll
be fine, no matter where you are. And you know, you're always welcome
to stay with us on the Pearl."
"Hold on, lass," Jack protested. "This is my ship. I'll be the one to
be decidin' who stays and who goes."
"Well, we can't just abandon him," Elizabeth argued.
"Elizabeth's right," Will agreed. "I want Riku to stay."
"And so do I," Elizabeth nodded.
"Suit yourself," Jack shrugged. "But I'm not cleaning up every time
the lad gets seasick."
Riku had been thinking things over while this conversation was going
on. His eyes widened as realization struck him. A moment later, he
got to his feet, smiling as his hands moved to protectively cover his
still-slender abdomen.
"You won't have to worry about it for more than a couple months," he
assured them.
"How can you be sure," Jack inquired. "No one knows how long
seasickness might last."
"This isn't seasickness," Riku told them. "It's morning sickness."
"Oh now, that's it. You're definitely off the boat next time she
docks, mate. I'll be having no babies on this here ship. The Black
Pearl is a pirate ship, not a floating nursery."
"And what do you think the people in town are going to do to him
when they find out he's pregnant?" Elizabeth demanded. "Not only is
he unmarried, which would put any woman in his condition before a
stoning party, he's also a young man. Putting him off the ship
would be no better than throwing him to the sharks."
"Now, there's a thought," Jack contemplated.
"Don't you dare!" Elizabeth warned.
"Don't worry," Jack shrugged, "I'll be givin' no sharks indigestion
today. I promise."
