-Chapter 05-

"And they still don't know where he is?" Sora's mom asked as she
handed Riku's a cup of hot coffee.

Riku's mother had made a habit of coming over to Sora's house ever
since their sons and Kairi had first gone missing a few years back.
Kairi's safe return had given them hope. And, sure enough, a year
after Kairi's return, Riku and Sora had come home. The two families
had celebrated together. And for a time, all seemed to have gone back
to normal. Then, a few months later, Riku had vanished once more.

Sora had promised to look for him, but his mother didn't want him to
also disappear. So he'd had to stick to asking people in town if
they had seen any sign of Riku.

Riku's mother, in the meanwhile, had been pestering every police
officer in town to find her missing son. But since Riku was an adult
now, most of them suggested that he had simply left home to seek his
fortune, and would probably soon be writing to tell her how life was
out in the wide world.

"Just because he's an adult, doesn't mean he wasn't kidnapped!" She
told Sora's mother, waving aside an offer of a muffin. "No thanks.
I can barely stand the sight of food, knowing that my poor baby is
out there all alone. He could be..." she set her cup down and put
her face in her hands, tears coming too easily to her eyes.

The door opened and Sora walked in.

"No luck?" Riku's mother asked.

"None, ma'am." Sora apologized, as he started to tidy up the dishes.
He felt uncomfortable around Riku's mom. If she saw him crying over
her son, it might bring up topics that he didn't think she would be
too happy about. She seemed rather open-minded. But Sora had often
noticed that many supposedly open-minded people liked to slam their
mental doors shut and stick iron bars across them when it came to
their own offspring.

Riku's mother sank back into her chair with a grieved sigh, but
perked up when she heard the doorbell. She didn't leap up as she had
the first few times when Riku had first vanished. Too many letdowns
had curbed her enthusiasm. But she remained alert for any news, good
or bad, of her missing son.

Sora's mother opened the door and blinked.

Standing on the step was a rather large and handsomely dressed mouse.

"Is Sora at home?"

"Um..." Sora's mother blinked nervously, then turned and called out.
"Sora, there's a mouse here to see you. Please, come in." She added
graciously admitting the tiny king.

"I'll be right there," Sora said, excitedly, arriving moments later.
"You're majesty," he bowed, "this is my mom. And this is Riku's mom."

"I'm very pleased to meet you both," King Mickey told them. He turned
to Riku's mother. "Your son is safe for the moment. But his condition
is very delicate. If we don't get him home before the time comes, he
may not survive it."

"His condition," Riku's mother asked, horrified. "Is he ill? Has he
been hurt?"

King Mickey turned away. "I'd rather not say."

Riku's mother glared at him until he sighed defeatedly. He never had
been able to withstand a mother's glare.

"Riku's pregnant." he told them.
