-Chapter 13-
"Hmph," Sephiroth started to walk away.
"You promised," Sora protested.
"I assumed your question was serious," Sephiroth huffed."Not a search
for some tawdry little snippets about my love-life."
"It is a serious question," Sora told him. "I need to know if Riku is
able to love me."
"What's that got to do with my love-life?"
"THe heart you cast aside when you were younger," Sora explained,
"its part of him, now."
"Explain," Sephiroth ordered, his sword pointed at Sora's chest.
Sora drew a photo of Riku from his pocket and handed it to
Sephiroth.
"Where did you get this?" Sephiroth demanded.
"I took it the summer before Riku was taken by the Darkness," Sora
explained.
"Impossible," Sephiroth shook his head, "that's a picture of me when
I was a teenager." He slashed at Sora with Masamune.
Barely dodging in time, Sora parried with his keyblade.
"Keep your thieving hands off my property!" Sephiroth demanded.
"It's not yours," Sora countered. "See! Here's one of me and Riku
together. Kairi took it the day before our adventures began."
Sephiroth grabbed it from him, and studied it, Masamune's tip now
at Sora's throat. "What did you say about him being part of me?"
Sora relaxed, visibly.
"Well, it's like this..."

"Gentlemen, welcome," Mr. Dark grinned as Riku and Kadaj approached
the entrance to his carnival. "It is a great pleasure to meet you
both. I am Mr. Dark, owner and proprietor of this modest little
carnival."
Kadaj was staring at the ferris wheel.
"Like it," Dark asked. "It may not look like much, but its something
special."
"What is it?" Kadaj inquired.
Dark's monologue hit the ground like an orchestra falling out of a
hot air balloon.
"You're joking, right?" he asked, suspiciously. "You surely must know
what a ferris wheel is."
Kadaj shook his head.
"What about you?" Dark asked Riku.
"I've been on them before," Riku replied. "But I can't go on at this
time."
"Oh, that's too bad," Mr. Dark told him. "Perhaps a visit to the hall
of mirrors, then? Surely that's safe enough for you."
Riku wasn't comfortable with the suave tone in Dark's voice. It was
too much like the way Maleficent had spoken to him just before she
had forced herself upon him with the help of her allies.
"Shove your mirrors," he said, turning to walk away.
"Then you don't wish to see Sora again?" Dark inquired. "Shame. Ah
well. I guess I can understand."
"No, you can't," Riku glared at him. "You don't know what it's like
to be held down by an ugly old hag's so-called friends while the old
witch herself forces herself upon you.with them cheering her on. You
have no idea what it is to consign yourself to eventual death because
you know a child was created and you can't bear the thought of her
carrying it after what she did to you."
"Perhaps not," Dark admiited. "But I can understand how embarrassing
it might be, and why you would not want to face the boy you love so
dearly after it happened."
"I'm not afraid to face Sora," Riku countered. "I just want to be
sure it really is Sora. I'll wait for him to show up in person,
thank you. I've seen enough illusions of the people I care about,
thank you very much."
"There may come a time when you long for those illusions," Dark
warned as he turned and walked away.
