CHAPTER TWELVE: A GAME OF LIFE AND FAIRY CHESS
Dio stepped away from the door pocketing the key to the room, he really hated that he had to keep her locked up but it was necessary. Dio didn't know what went on in Alex's office and when they came back out he could tell it had gone well seeing the hopelessness on Lavi's face and Alex's show of disgust as he had proceeded with the binding ceremony.
A slow smile spread across Dio's face when he remembered what Claus said. And he gave a giggle at the ironic way that Claus was supposed to love Lavi but had let her go so easily. Dio knew that his mate was hurt by what Claus had said and how Tatiana was there to comfort him when Lavi was the one that needed to be comforted. Dio couldn't help but think of Claus as a selfish little boy that only thought of himself.
Dio's face fell as Al's mad face flashed before him, she knew something and he wanted to find out what it was. With that thought he gave up the idea of playing chess and went in search for Al to see if she did indeed know something.
After a few minutes of searching Dio found Al but she was with Claus helping along with the van ship repairs that Lavi had been keeping up till Dio had took over her life. Dio's eyes grew bright at the opportunity to taunt Claus at his loss. He slowly walked up to them noticing that their conversation stopped when they saw him. Claus quickly bent his head quickly working on some repairs and Al refused to meet Dio's eyes. Dio made a mental note that something was strange but decided to have some fun anyway.
Dio patted Al on the head and leaned over what Claus was repairing at the moment saying
“So how are repairs going Claus?” Claus gave a meek fine and continued with his work ignoring Dio's presence until Dio gave a sigh and decided that he wanted some kind of reaction from him and said
“Lavi said to say sorry that she didn't tell you about us but you were of some where with Tatiana and she couldn't reach you, it was kind of sudden now that I think about it.” He quickly stepped back as Claus dropped his wrench rising from his stooped position and muttered a quick excuse me and walked away towards the door and left Dio and Al.
Dio gave a nod knowing that he had gotten the reaction he had wanted he turned to Al's stunned form and asked her
“Is Claus really that upset, Al? I mean it was Lavi's choice after all.” The small girl sighed turning to Dio asking
“Did she really choose Dio?” Dio gave the best hurt look he could when inside he was having so much fun playing with these people. Al sighed again saying
“Sorry Dio I guess she would have said something if it hadn't been her choice and all Claus will say is that it isn't his problem anymore.” Al's face became even sadder at the thought of her two best friends that had once loved each other didn't even talk to each other anymore. Al just felt there was something fishy going on and that Dio was the cause but she decided not to let him know that just incase there were problems. Dio had felt that he had enough fun for now telling Al that he was off to play some fairy chess lightly patting her on the head.
Now that Dio had a chance to see her reaction to him and Claus he decided that even if the runt was up to something no one would listen to her not even Claus, which was obvious from what Al had said. Dio started the long walk to the engine room whistling a small toon his face covered in a large grin.
As Dio made his way down the dark hall to play chess he paused in front of the door were he first had a taste of what Lavi could give him. His face became serious as he thought about the past but quickly turned running a hand across the closed door his smile back in place as he walked a few steps and then went down the staircase leading to the engine room. Dio lightly stepped into the room looking around until his eyes fell on the old man giving a cheerful hello to him as Dio took his place at one end of the chess board setting up his pieces.
He only glanced up when a hand was offered in front of him turning his head to the side giving the old man a smile and quickly shaking his had as he received a quick congratulations. Dio nodded a thanks and the old man sat across from him setting up his own pieces and they began to play a nice quiet game of fairy chess.
