Chapter 2
A Night Ride
Rei sped down the roads as fast as he could go. Kira’s grip around his waist tightened and he felt a smile creep across his face. Usually no one rode on Rei’s bike because they always complained about him going to fast or how reckless he was. This pissed Rei off more than anything. Rei would never be careless with a bike. And furthermore, it was simply not possible to go to fast on a beautiful piece of machinery such as his bike. Kira was different though. She never said anything about his driving or speed, she just squeezed tighter. But the best thing about having Kira ride with him was the way she held on. There was no tension in her arms. The timid ness of her seemed to be blown away by the wind.
She held on tighter so she wouldn’t fall off. She had also learned to lean with Rei when he shifted his weight for turns. Rei loved having Kira this close to him. The tension or uneasiness between them just vanished. Just the road, wind and them, it was heaven on earth for Rei. Rei knew what freedom riding provided for him and Kira; he just wished that she were like this more when they weren’t on his bike. He began to slow down and stopped right outside Kira’s home and turned off the bike.
“We’re here.”
“I know. “ Kira took off the helmet and shook her head, but did not attempt to get off the bike. Rei was slightly confused.
“Isn’t this where you wanted to go?”
“No.” Simple and straight to the point. Rei waited for Kira to say something else, but when she didn’t he asked, “ Well then where did you want to go?”
“ I don’t know. Just not here…. Could we ride a little more? Faster?”
“It’s hard to go faster on the city streets. Too many cops would love to pull me over.” he smiled at her and she giggled a little knowing what he said was true. “There are a couple of roads out side of town that I know --”
“Ok.”
“ Ok. Put your helmet back on.”
Kira put the helmet back on and Rei started the bike again and left. Neither of them noticed that Kira’s mother had been looking out the window, and watched them ride away.
Kira loved the way Rei rode his bike. This was his passion, what truly brought out his colors. She could feel the life in him stream into her as the wind flew past them on his bike. This is his simplest and purest pleasure. She was so happy when he decided to share it with her and allow her to become a part of it.
The faster he went the more she felt herself melt into his back. The more she felt herself become one with him. This gave her extra strength and she felt so calm and secure with Rei. True they were going at speeds that a normal person would consider suicidal, but it never bothered Kira. Whatever problems she had melted away until it was just her, Rei, the bike and the wind. Nothing else could reach them when Rei rode and she had to hold on to his waist so tight, she almost thought she stop him from breathing. Usually when that happened Rei backed off the speed a little. For some reason it always made her smile.
Rei came to a stop after they had been riding for a while. It was almost impossible to judge how long and how far they had gone. The wind made it impossible to think and the speed was impossible to judge, so Kira never really knew where they were going until they got there. It took her a minute or two to come back from the dream world she had been in and Rei just waited patiently for Kira to perk up. When she looked up she was surprised at what she saw.
Rei had stopped in front of a lake. It was such a clear night and the lake glistened in the moonlight. Rei had already turned off the bike and taken his helmet off, shaking his hair and running his hands through it to comb it out. “Bike needs to cool down a bit. I ran it a little harder than usual and it‘s still pretty new and I don‘t want to push it too hard.” Rei said and smiled back at Kira. Kira took off her helmet and did the same thing as Rei did with her hair; only it took a little longer. After combing most of the knots out, she asked, “Where are we?”
“I used to come here a lot to get away when I needed to think. There’s a cabin up here just on the other side of the lake. I helped the owner of it a few years back and he said I could use it whenever I wanted since he didn’t need it and couldn’t get anyone to buy it out here.”
“ Where are we?” Kira asked again.
“About 100 miles from the city and it’s at least 20 miles into the closest town. That’s why he couldn’t get a buyer.”
“Oh.” Kira began to shiver again and she rubbed her arms.
“Come on. It’ll be warmer in the cabin once I get a fire going. Here.” Rei took off his flannel shirt and put it around Kira’s arms and for the second time that night pulled her against his chest. Rei arms circled Kira’s waist and he rested his chin on the top of her head as they started walking on the path that lead to the cabin.
As they neared the lake, Kira ran towards the midnight blue waters. Her artistic senses taking in everything around her. She was standing on a ledge that was probably about a foot and a half above the water level. It was impossible however to judge the depth of the calm, dark water of the lake. Kira started walking around the edge, just looking at the sky, the water, and the stars. She did not hear Rei calling to her until it was to late. She stepped on some lose rocks and fell straight into the icy lake water.
Rei ran to where he had seen Kira fall and was about to jump in after her when he suddenly stopped. He looked at the lake again and began to laugh uncontrollably. Kira had fallen into the lake, but the lake was only about two feet deep! Kira was covered in seaweed and soaking wet. The ledge had decreased some so Kira had only fallen maybe a foot before she hit the water. Rei had managed to stop laughing and leaned over the edge again to see Kira still sitting in the water. She had at least begun to pick the seaweed out of her hair and off her arms. “I told you to watch your step. Can you stand up?”
Kira nodded and stood up. Rei placed his hands on her sides and lifted her out of the lake and back onto the grass, as far away from the ledge as possible. He then continued to help Kira pick the seaweed off of her. Kira was very red in the face and Rei could not stop the laughter he felt boiling up inside him again. This time Kira was not so stunned and she threw a handful of seaweed at him. Direct hit. Rei stopped laughing the second he felt the cold seaweed strike his face and turned to see Kira with a wide smile and another handful off seaweed. “I won’t do that again if I were you,” he said.
“ And what if I did?” asked Kira in a playful tone that Rei had never heard before.
“ Remember what happened last time you didn’t listen to me?” Rei said as moved closer to Kira. Kira dropped the seaweed. She decided that one trip to the lake had been enough and knew Rei would delight in dropping her in it again. “Good choice. Now lets get to the cabin. If you were cold before, well it’s about to get worse.”
The wind decided to pick up as they began walking and the path was longer than Rei remembered. He ended up having to carry a very cold and shivering Kira to the cabin. Once inside the cabin, Rei set Kira down in a chair at the small kitchen table and went to the closet to find some extra blankets. Kira looked around the cabin a little. It was rather small, but it had a kitchen to the left of the door, a sitting room with a small TV in the back left corner, the table she sat at was in the center of the one room cabin, and a very large bed was in the back right corner. The closet that Rei was looking through had been on the other side of a very large fireplace that was right in front of Kira.
“Here. Take off those wet clothes and wrap these blankets around you. I’m going to start a fire. I promise I won’t peek ok?” Kira nodded and Rei turned his attentions to the fireplace. After a few minutes he had a large fire going and spread a large blanket down in front of it. He slowly turned back towards Kira. Kira had only started to unbutton her shirt.
“I promised I won’t peek, but you have to get out of those clothes so they can dry.”
“ I…I can’t get the buttons undone. My fingers are numb. “
“ I promise I won’t do anything. I just want to help.” Kira nodded her head slowly as Rei kneeled in front of her and started to unbutton her shirt. He was very true to his word. He slid the shirt off her arms and let it fall to the floor. He took one of the blankets and draped it over her shoulders. “ Do you think you can stand?” Kira stood on very wobbly legs. She balanced herself by placing a hand on the table and her other hand on Rei’s shoulder. Rei started to unbutton Kira’s pants and she took a step back as Rei’s hand touched her exposed stomach. Rei pulled back his hands and hung his head. “Do you think you can get them yourself?” Kira paused for a moment and then shook her head. “Then you’ll have to trust me. You do trust me don’t you?” Kira nodded and stepped back towards Rei. Rei removed her jeans but left her underwear on. He did manage to get a good look at her body before she pulled the blanket around her waist. He greatly enjoyed what he saw. “ Go over there and lay down in front of the fire. I’ll hang these up so they will dry faster.”
Kira did as Rei asked and lie down on the blanket in front of the fire. She watched as Rei pulled off his shirt, which had been soaked through from the water still, dripping off of Kira when he had to carry her to the cabin. She rolled back over to face the fire glad to be warm again. She couldn’t help but notice the way the firelight had danced all over Rei’s well toned muscles, and smiled to herself. She was still very much lost in thought when Rei came over and wrapped an arm around her waist. Kira snuggled closer to Rei chest, and Rei in return buried his face in Kira’s hair and neck.
