Chapter 8

“I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.” The man was cocky and it got on her nerve.
“What’s your purpose here?” she looked at him more closely and found had a sword. He had on red hakamas with a white juban and a red haori to match.
He smiled wickedly. “You, of course. My nose says that you’re one powerful demon so I came to see myself and let me tell you, you look more like a harmless puppy than powerful.” Kagome took a deep breath and heard the demon inside talk to her.
He is a half breed. He could be more dangerous than he looks. Use your claws for no. This is a perfect opportunity to train your claws and speed.
Kagome nodded then turned her attention to the cocky half breed. “Wow, I didn’t know noses could talk. That shows how much your intellectual level goes. Didn’t your mother ever teach you not to underestimate your opponent?” Kagome smirked as the hanyou glowered at her with his molten gold eyes, furious at the insult that obviously hit a nerve.
“Didn’t yours ever tell you to watch your tongue?” Kagome glared menacingly.
“Unfortunately no. she died before she could teach me.” She saw his face slowly soften into understanding and shock. Kagome readied her claws for attack. “What’s wrong? You did come here looking for a fight, didn’t you?” His expression was replaced with frustration and anger.
“Why do you cover your face? Most demons are proud to show who they are.”
“I’m not most demons.” She watched him roll his eyes.
“Yeah, of course you’re not.”
“Shouldn’t we be fighting instead of chattering?”
“Well, what will it take to get that mask off?”
“You’d have to get through me.” Kagome readied herself.
“If that’s what it takes then fine. This is gonna be fun.” She watched him ready his claws as they started to circle. He lunged first and tried to swipe at her but she just grabbed is wrist and twisted it to near breaking point.
He twisted out of her grasp and jumped away, yelling “Iron reaver soul stealer!!!
Kagome dodged the attack and yelled “Ethereal Crescents!!! Her claws began to glow white as she lashed out to him. As the five little white lights flew toward him, they got as large as a fully grown human. He barely escaped the attack but lashed out again at her.
“I can do this all day!” he said as he dodged another attack. Kagome sped towards him and ran her claws into his stomach. As he flew back, a blue cloth fell from the arm of his haori.
“Well, what’s this?” Kagome picked up the cloth and recognized the symbol as her own. “So, you’re from the spirit village? Did they cast you out as well?”
“Actually, they sent me to be in the Chunin exams. I’m getting in some practice before I get there.” Kagome smirked and threw the bandana back to him.
“I presume you have two others with?”
“Yeah, but they hate to train.”
“Some teammates.” They circled again.
“Is the human part of your team?” He asked, indicating the blonde under the darkened covering.
‘Naruto must be having a field day watching this fight.’ She thought. “Yes”
“So, you gonna tell me your name?”
“Only if you tell me yours.” He gave her a cocky grin.
“Why don’t we just sit down and get to know one another?”
“Sorry, I like to keep my status unknown. Tell me your name.” Kagome stopped and looked him in the eye.
“Inuyasha. Inuyasha Akanata.”
“Kagome Higurashi.”
“Well,” he came forward. “Now that we got that out of the way, let’s see what you look like.” He was just an arms length away.
“You’d have to catch me.” Forgetting that Naruto was only a few yards away, she sped off. With Inuyasha right on her tail, she leaped from tree branch to tree branch.
“Come on! Can’t we talk like normal people?” she heard him yell.
“No way! This is what makes it interesting!” Kagome did a couple of hand signs and said “Secret camouflage jutsu!” Inuyasha watched her disappear into the trees.
‘Whoa! I can’t even pick up a scent!’ he thought as he searched.

As day became night, he heard a small faint giggle. He quickly turned and headed towards the sound. It lead him to the soothing scent of rainwater and the spiciness of cinnamon. He quickly got behind a shrubbery and peeked out from behind it. There in front of him was the demoness he’d been searching for, swimming in the spring. Her mask was off but he still couldn’t see her face clearly. He knew he had to see her face, so he crept closer, like a predator stalking its prey.
“Why bother hiding when I can just smell you?” she said aloud.
“Okay, okay. So you caught me, do I still get to see what you look like?” Quickly, and exceptionally fast, she retrieved her mask on the bank and was back in the water before he could catch a glimpse of her features or body structure.
“No, but you can tell me how your companions are.” Inuyasha sighed and shook his head in annoyance.
“There’s no way of even getting to know a tiny detail without you making it hard for me, is there?” Kagome smiled beneath her mask.
“No.” she said simply. “She looked at him more closely.
“Shouldn’t you be getting ready for tomorrow evening?” Inuyasha looked at her, taken aback by what she had said.
“Getting ready for what?” he asked innocently.
“Don’t play stupid. If there’s one thing about hanyous that I DO know, it’s when they have to turn human. I’m guessing your night is on the night of the new moon. You look very tense and so I thought it must be your human night.” She knew it would get under his skin as she looked at his annoyed expression.
“So what! Just because it’s my human night doesn’t mean I have to stay in a room and be guarded at all times like a monkey in a cage! Where’s the freedom in that?” Kagome giggled. A sudden realization swept through his mind. Higurashi! Of course! Why didn’t he recognize the name before? He heard the news of the Higurashi hut. Because he was only a child, he was tempted to go over to her and play but never did. The news of the murder of her mother and the sudden disappearance saddened him, for she was the only other demon besides him in the village.
“Hey! What’s gotten you so sad and gloomy all of the sudden?” he sighed contently as his lines of thoughts were broken by her voice.
“I’m sorry about what happened to your mother. I didn’t realize who you were until now.” Shock came about her face as she waded in the water. Then she looked down at her reflection and noted that her eyes had changed from silver to a forest green.
“I vowed vengeance that night and as soon as I become stronger, I will kill the entire village men involved with my mother’s death. They will not get away unjustified.” She took a quick glance at her hands; they were pruned so bad that she could move the skin around with just a slight touch. “Would you kindly leave so that I may be able to dress?”
“Huh?” He said until it smacked him in the face that she was still in the water clothless. “Uhh, yeah sure, what ever.” And with that he left. Kagome dried with the towel she snuck out with while Inuyasha had been searching for her. It was late and she had to have a full night’s rest before her new training started.
‘Not to mention a history lesson too.’ She groaned. Even the sound of an uninteresting history lesson just wanted her to fall asleep. When she was dressed, she headed off to the broken down building. “Home, sweet, home.” She mumbled.

Let’s start with your sword. Kagome had all her weapons laid out in front of her. Your sword was made by the legendary Jaded Elvin. A long time ago they managed to create a beautiful and graceful weapon of destruction but could only be handled by the chosen one to protect their home. None prevailed enough power to handle it so they thought of it as useless. I would think that you are its first wielder. Let’s move on.
“Wait! Do you even know what happened to them?” Kagome paused waiting for an answer.
Legend has it that they eventually died out but if you ever come across one you’d be very lucky that you have before your time here is at its end.
“Wow.” Kagome responded.
Yes, it is a shame. They are caring creatures. Moving on to your dagger of the North; I haven’t a clue who made it but all I do know is that if you blow upon it, the wintery flakes of healing snow would cure any injury, no matter how bad the wound is. But, when it comes into battle, it shall be swift and steady.
“Okay. North dagger cures any injury, got it.”
Next is the south dagger. This particular dagger was forged in the pits of a volcano. It can only be destroyed by dropping it into the same volcano and into its lava. The fires it spews from its blade will protect you from any enemy. Point in toward the earth and you will create a wall of fire that can only be put out by the dagger itself. The blade will suck in the flames if you point it towards the flame. The East dagger is one of defense. With it, it shall shield you from any attack. The wind will be called forth and create a barrier as large as you would like it. Last, the West dagger. The dagger will move anything that is from the earth. With it, you could create mountains, valleys, earthquakes, and other things. These weapons are truly unique and you are lucky to wield them. Now, on with your training.
Kagome yawned. “It’s about time.” She gathered her weapons and sheathed them.
We should start small. Practice with the East dagger first. Kagome took out the blade and examined it. Now before you………
Kagome pointed the blade into the sky. “Wind barrier!” Kagome made an arc with the blade and watched as it glowed green. A gust of wind blew and created a green barrier around her. “Whoa. That was easy.” She smirked and waved the barrier off, then sheathed her dagger.
Impressive, very interesting.
“Yeah, well, now what?”
Since you obviously know who to use the East blade, perhaps you will demonstrate an exercise with the South blade.
Kagome shrugged. “Okay.” She took out the blade and pointed it toward the tree stump. “Fire spin!” Suddenly, a large flame burst from the tip and shot towards the defenseless stump. Kagome waved it off and aimed it toward another target. “Flaming vortex!” Kagome watched the fire spew out of the blade to create a large tornado of fire. When the fire started to spread she pointed the blade towards the fire and sucked the licking flames in. She examined the damage and was satisfied with her work.
That will be enough training for one day. Tomorrow you will use the North and possibly the West blades. Kagome sheathed her dagger and lied on her back on the grass.

*---------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------*

‘Impressive. I’m guessing she’s just learning how to work those weapons. There’s something about her that’s making her this powerful and it ain’t her demon blood. No matter, I’ll find out what makes her tick soon enough.’ Inuyasha thought as he watched Kagome fall asleep in the clearing. He strode out to her and examined her features. ‘She looks about my age. So….beautiful eyes.’ With curiosity getting the better of him, he gently reached out and untied the mask she wore. Slowly but surely, he removed the cloth that was separating his view of her face. She slightly stirred but was still asleep. Inuyasha examined her features for the first time. ‘Whoa, she’s so beautiful.’ Suddenly, he had a very strong urge to run his fingers over her cheek and tried to resist.
“What are you doing here?” Inuyasha quickly turned around to find a figure in the shadows. He stood up straight and narrowed his eyes.
“Who are you?” He watched the figure step forward and out of the shadows.
“Her teammate.”
“Well, if you aren’t that yellow-haired, knuckle-headed kid then you must be the one all the girls go head over heels for. Sasuke was your name, right?” Sasuke narrowed his eyes. “I’ll take that as a yes. So, what do you want?” Inuyasha glared at him as he waited for an answer.
“I should be asking you that question.” Sasuke’s insides flipped as he saw Kagome lying in the sun with her hair spread out above her almost like an angelic halo. He felt his heart race as he watched her chest rise and fall. He then heard someone laughing and turned his gaze back to the stranger. “What’s so funny?” He said darkly.
“You’ve got to be kidding! That’s more than funny, it’s hilarious!” Inuyasha straightened but was still slightly giggling. “Let’s just say that she’s way out of your league. I can’t believe you’re falling for her!” Inuyasha continued to laugh. Sasuke stepped back in shock but quickly recovered his pose.
“What are you talking about?” Inuyasha approached him but kept an arm’s distance away, his features strict and serious.
“Don’t play stupid with me.” He said quietly. “Your heartbeat races every time you look at her. I know how you humans work. It saddens me that I have to hear their heart race when they see an attractive male or female. It gets on my nerves.” Sasuke’s eyes widened and finally noticed the white puppy dog ears perched on his head.
“What are you, some kind of demon?” Inuyasha smirked.
“You could say that.”
“You still never answered my question. What do you want and why are you here?” Sasuke pushed, his voice sounding more serious like a deadly snake.
“I was just curious about your friend here.” He gestured toward the sleeping girl, oblivious to what was around her. “I ran into her yesterday and she just happened to catch my interests.”
“She won’t be interested in the likes of you.” Sasuke growled. ‘Wait! Where did that come from? I barely even know her, let alone know who she’s interested in.’ Sasuke gave an inward face of disgust.
“Oh yeah? Well, how would you know? After all, you only just met her. Before week’s end, I know she’ll be crawling back to me.” Inuyasha gave a sly smile.
“You will stay away from her!” Sasuke challenged. Inuyasha raised his brow in amusement.
“And I suppose you’re going to stop me? This is amusing. Fine, I’ll fight you for her if that’s what you want.” A rush of energy went through Sasuke like a strong current of a fast flowing river.
“No one is going to fight over me?” A feminine but powerful voice rang out into the air. Sasuke turned to see Kagome standing with eyes boring into his. Those eyes with swirling green quicksilver told him that she was dangerous. The markings only added to her fiery glare. “Not surprised to find you here.” Her gaze flickered toward Inuyasha with demanding eyes. “However, I am surprised to find you here Uchiha.” Sasuke saw Inuyasha smile wickedly.
“So you’re the Uchiha that survived the Uchiha slaughter. I’d call it luck.” Sasuke glared at him.
“It wasn’t luck. He let me live.”
“Well, if I was him, I would’ve……..”
“That’s enough!! I will tolerate no more. Why you’re here, I will never know but one thing will occur. Leave. Go separate ways and don’t make me keep you apart.” Inuyasha spun around and glared at Kagome. “Am I understood?” Inuyasha suddenly backed down with his ears flat against his head. He watched the green silver swirl away into a deep black abyss. Inuyasha walked away with a “Keh!” Sasuke took one last look before turning away into the depths of the trees.
