Chapter 17

“I’ll agree to your arrangement on one condition. I want you to find my sister Kanna. She is a void demon and will be expecting you.” Kagura countered.

“I agree to your terms. I can guarantee the safety of your sister but your freedom can not come immediately.” Kagome assured her. It was true. Her freedom won’t come easily but she had sworn her soul that she would find a way to free her. It would take time to find a way but finding Kanna wouldn’t be too bad.

“Take this. It is Kanna’s dagger. Her scent covers it and it should lead you to her.” Kagura handed over the small dagger. The handle had been weaved in white and the sheath had been white with black writing. Kagome nodded.

“In two weeks, come and find me. By then you should have discovered something.” She thought for a moment, and then added “Do you know why he wanted a jewel fragment?” Kagura shook her head.

“He didn’t mention anything about it.” Kagome cursed under her breath, looking to the end of the cave to see the morning light shyly peer over the trees as if scared of the nights events.

“You should be going before they get suspicious.” They both stood and walked outside to greet the new day.

“In two weeks then.” Kagura said, pulling a feather from her hair and floated away in the wind.

“Hai, in two weeks.” Kagome said silently, watching the witch go off beyond the mountains. She suddenly felt drowsiness consume her from the lack of sleep. She jumped into a rather larger tree and picked out a sturdy branch, then placed a barrier to protect her while she slept.

“What do you intend to do with a worthless piece of rock?” Orochimaru asked, obviously disgusted by the thoughtfulness Naraku had. Naraku chuckled.

“This, Orochimaru, is a fragment of the Sacred Jewel of Four Souls. This fragment alone can make you five times stronger than what you are now; it can even revive the dead. Imagine what the whole jewel could do if only we had it in our hands. Manten managed to succeed after all before he died. Although, I did not expect that wench to be strong enough to wipe out that army. Again, I have been proven wrong about that bitch’s strength.” Naraku stared fondly at the fragment. Orochimaru’s brows furrowed at the lack of information his partner was giving. “Do not worry, my friend. You will enjoy what I have in store for our little Kagome.”

“What of Hiten? He has betrayed us and has joined Sasuke.” Orochimaru countered.

“Hiten will indeed be a problem but he was also dragged into this by his dear bother. He has hated us from the start. No, let him go. I have the ultimate leverage to control Kagome.” Naraku slid the fragment into his robes.

“Tell me Naraku, what will be our next move?” Orochimaru asked impatiently.

Naraku smirked. “I think we should send Itachi on a little mission. He should find it exhilarating.”

Kagome awoke with a start. A strange scent had drifted to her nose, along with the smell of roasting meat. “I see that you’ve awakened.” The figure said from below. Kagome jumped from her hiding place beside the intruder. Slowly she examined him from head to toe. He wore purple and black robes with prayer beads and a covering around his right hand. He had long jet black hair that had been pulled into a low ponytail, his eyes brown with mischief and a sense of looking at multiple women in the past. Kagome furrowed her brows at her new discovery. This man was a lecher.

“Who are you, lecher?” She asked harshly. He smirked at her question.

“I am but a monk making my way around the land. As for a letch, I merely find my life rather lonely.” Kagome shook her head, she wasn’t buying his story. A sense of evilness wafted into her nose, realizing it had been leaking from his right hand.

“And I suppose you groping every woman you meet in each village you pass by has nothing to with you being lonely?” she retorted.

“If I may ask, what is your name?” the monk said. Kagome glared but answered willingly.

“Kagome Higurashi.”

“Miroku Houshi.” He answered her glare with a smile.

“What business do you have?” Miroku chuckled.

“It seems that I have upset a demon slayer and is to search me out.”

“What’d you do, grope her?”

“I think the term would be physically seeing her looks.” He explained. Kagome smirked.

“Yeah, you were groping her. So….why do I have the feeling that your right hand contains much evil?” Kagome asked curiously. She watched the monk sigh and shake his head.

“I don’t think you’ll believe me if I told you.” Kagome made a very unlady like snort.

“Believe me; I’ve seen some pretty unbelievable stuff. I don’t think your story will make me think other wise.” Miroku stared into the fire, remembering that day as if it were yesterday.

“My grandfather had been a Buddhist monk, the same as my father and I. He travelled all across Japan when one day, a beautiful maiden crossed his path.”

“Let me guess, he was a lecher too?” Kagome interrupted. Miroku’s sweat dropped.

“He was an honorable monk who happened to want an heir before he died. Now as I was saying. This maiden hadn’t been a woman after all, but, an evil half demon that could take on the forms of others. My grandfather had been tricked and therefore, had been cursed by the demon. In this, the demon forever cursed my grandfather’s right hand with an endless void that can suck up anything if not covered properly. He said that eventually the void will gradually get larger with each passing year and will soon be so large that it will engulf the person who is cursed with it. To make it worse, the curse will be passed on to each legacy of my grandfather until the demon is killed. My father failed to find the half demon and the result was his death. I carry the same fate and that is why I must find that demon before I too will die.”

“Some curse. So that explains the scent of evil. But now I want an explanation of why you must grope so many women.” Kagome said, clearly interested in the monk’s life stories.

“Well, if I should fail to kill the demon, I would like a son to carry on the mission.” He explained.

“And so you think groping women will get you a son? You might as well go to a local whore house. I’m sure they won’t have a problem fulfilling your every need.” Kagome retorted, irritated by his lack of manners. Kagome heard a twig snap and with sudden adrenaline running through her, she snaked her tail into the bushes and yanked out whatever was stalking them. Miroku looked up from his daze and saw Kagome standing with her tail holding a woman upside down by her foot.

“Unhand me demon! My business does not concern you! Only with that of the monk!” The woman yelled, pointing an accusing finger at Miroku. Kagome smirked.

“I assume this is the demon slayer you were talking about?” Miroku nodded, still gazing at the tempered slayer. Kagome shrugged and dropped the woman, earning a death stare. “By all means, teach him a lesson. The lecher obviously needs it.” Kagome ushered as she watched the demon slayer stalk towards the monk. Suddenly, Kagome heard a loud smack and saw that it rendered Miroku unconscious.

“Well, my work here is done.” She said as she headed back towards the tree line.

“Wait! What do people call you?” Kagome asked before the slayer could flee. She turned and stared with large brown eyes, her dark brown hair mingled in the slight breeze.

“I am Sango the demon slayer.”

“I am Kagome. I was wondering if you would like to take on a proposition.” Uncertainty passed through Sango’s eyes.

“You have caught me in a dreadful time of grieving, Kagome. My village had been slaughtered by that wretched half demon and that snake of a ninja. The strongest of us were out on a mission while the village had been slain.”

“I happen to know who you are talking about. The half demon you speak of is the same half demon that cursed my family.” A now conscious Miroku jumped in.

“Unless you know the weak spots of Naraku, this talking is not going to help us at all. I have certain plans and I’ll need help to do it. Sango, can you and your demon hunters accompany Miroku and I on a mission? I am in dire need of help. I come from a make shift village not to far away but I need every ninja there to protect Konoha’s lands and other villages.” Kagome said. Sango glanced at Miroku then back at Kagome and slowly nodded. Kagome smiled, thankful for the slayer’s assistance. “Well then, take us to your village. We need to arrive at my village before sunrise.” Miroku shook his head but gathered his staff and put out the fire.

“Kirara, come on out.” Kagome turned in time to see a small neko youkai come out of the trees and jump on Sango’s shoulder.

“How will we travel to the slayer village and back to your village all in one night?” Miroku asked, hating to be the rain on someone’s parade.

“We can ride Kirara. She will take us there faster.” Sango said, Kirara mewed meaning she agreed. Miroku chuckled.

“How are we supposed to ride a small animal such as that one? It seems impossible. It is impossible!” Kirara jumped from Sango’s shoulder and transformed in a blaze of fire into a large fire cat. Feeling embarrassed that he underestimated a demon; Miroku rubbed the back of his neck and smiled an apology.

“Well, I don’t need to ride Kirara, no offense to you. I have my demon speed so I’ll just follow you along the ground. All you have to do is lead the way.” Kagome stated as Sango and Miroku mounted Kirara.

“Let’s go Kirara.” The fire cat leapt into the air and headed toward the slayer’s village.

“Where in the hell could she have gone?” Inuyasha asked, rubbing his forehead in agitation.

“Do you really need to ask that question? Apparently she has been here.” Hiten had been leaning against the cave wall, watching Inuyasha examine the body of a dead wolf demon. Inuyasha shook his head.

“Kagome couldn’t have killed him. These wounds don’t look like claw marks. It’s more like blades, very large blades.” Hiten took a deep breath and found another demon had been here with Kagome besides the wolf, a female at that. Inuyasha sighed. “Maybe you’re right Hiten. I mean she does have her daggers and sword with her.”

“No, I was wrong. There’s another female scent here.” Hiten corrected. “Well, there is no reason to stick around here anymore. Let’s continue to follow her scent and pick up the pace.” Inuyasha nodded as Hiten put on his fire wheels.

“Sango!!& #8221; Kagome yelled as she pressed her back against a tree. As soon as Kirara had touched the ground, Sango ran towards Kagome, watching her people surround her with spears and scythes.

“Father! Stop! She is not one of them! Kagome comes to call on us for help to defeat that vial half breed and his snake of a ninja. I have brought her here to speak with you about it.” Sango explained as she got between Kagome and the villagers. Sango’s father narrowed his eyes, staring into his daughter’s eyes before commanding the other village men to put down their weapons.

“If you are to join me, we must leave immediately. I am to understand that you will be leaving home while in mourning for your people but the schedule I have is very long and so I must be quick about it.” Kagome said as she stepped away from the tree. The men looked to their leader.

“Father, we must do this to avenge our people.” Sango intervened. Her father looked from Sango to his men, then back to Sango and made a quick decision.

“Men, ready your weapons and pack enough food and supplies. We leave immediately.”

&# 8220;Well? Did you find here?” Sasuke growled. Inuyasha rolled his eyes.

“Well, if we did find her, wouldn’t she be with us right now?” Hiten said sarcastically.

“Don’t be a smartass. I’ll go and….” Sasuke was cut off as he watched Kagome enter the village with about 15 men following her.

“Sasuke.” Kagome acknowledged as she approached him. Sasuke gaped at her.

“Who are they?” He asked.
“They are people who wish to join our army.” Kagome replied.

“We can’t have random people just walk right in! We need strong soldiers.”

“They are the strongest demon slayers known to this land. All except for the monk are demon slayers.”

“Tell me, what is so special about the monk?”

“He is of no concern of yours.” Kagome retorted. “Each of these men and women had their own past history with Naraku and Orochimaru. They wish to avenge their people whom, I might add, have lost their lives. I am merely allowing them to do as they please along side the rest of us. It is a shame, Sasuke Uchiha, that you have forgotten the first lesson Kakashi-sensei has taught us.” Kagome looked toward the group of slayers in the training grounds.

“You can’t just rant around giving orders without me knowing your intentions. It gets everyone worried that you are on your own out there without a partner, Kagome.” Sasuke reasoned. She looked back at him and drew her brows together.

“Do not try to reason me with sentimental remarks. What we shared was not love but merely lust, and might I remind you to never mix love with war.” Annoyed, she took a fist full of his shirt and dragged him to her quarters. Once inside, she dumped him on the floor and slammed the front door closed. “You need to get rid of these pesky human emotions. When you are a warrior, you must act as a warrior. Now leave me. I must start preparing for the journey ahead.”
