Chapter Four: Mr. Brood Boy

“Bye Naruto-kun, Sakura-chan!” Temari yelled, waving her arms.
She and Sasuke were walking home now. The sun was setting, the sky a fiery red color. Temari kept waving as they went their separate ways.

Falling in step with Sasuke, Temari kicked at pebbles nearby. She started humming a bit.
He really isn't a talkative guy, she thought, looking sideways at him. Shrugging inwardly, she tugged on one of her ponytails.

“Would it kill you to be a bit more social?”
Sasuke glared at her. “It's just the way I am...” He muttered, jamming his hands into his pockets.
They passed by a man with black hair and a big straw hat.

Temari rolled her eyes.
“You could at least try…” she muttered.
Sasuke hunched his shoulders a little.
“I'm done trying. There's no point in doing it anymore.
Temari looked at him quizzically.
This boy is such an enigma.

They walked on in silence for a while. As they paced through the streets, little children ran around, other people minding their own business. Sasuke saw a few people, like Kiba and Lee. Temari bowed to them and tried to chat with them too. But Sasuke dragged her away.

Night had fallen by now, and most people had gotten home already. It was a bit chilly; cold breezes would blow by, and Temari would rub her arm, hunching her shoulders. But Sasuke just stared ahead, glaring as usual….

“Is that a park?”
Sasuke turned back to Temari, black eyes staring at the direction she was pointing at. Temari looked at him and blinked. His eyes…they were different. They looked softer, calmer….sad.

“Yeah,” He murmured, still looking at the small park. “My mom used to take me there all the time….when I was little”
His eyes seemed to glaze over slightly.

Temari looked at him, her annoyance ebbing away.
His mother? Where…is his mother? I've never seen her…
He doesn't live with them anyway…

“Where is she now?”

Sasuke looked up, hands still in his pockets. A breeze blew by. He closed his eyes.
“She's dead. My father is too. The entire Uchiha clan is dead.”
Temari's eyes widened before she dropped her gaze onto the floor.
Another breeze blew by. A man walked passed them.

“Sorry,” she said quietly, “I know it probably doesn't help but I'm sorry anyway.”
Sasuke didn't say anything. He just stared at the playground, with that same expression on his face. Temari felt that sagging feeling weighing on her…

That feeling that she didn't like.
I have to push it away…

“Let's go on the swings.”

Sasuke tilted his head. That was such an odd question. But he gave a slight smile and shrugged.
“What the heck--why not?”

She grinned and jumped over the gate, laughing the whole way. Running to the far corner where the swing sets were, she looked back and waved toward Sasuke to come too.

Temari set herself on one set, Sasuke choosing the one beside her. That cold breeze blew again. Neither noticed the tall man standing on the building across the street.

Temari's hands held the cold metal chains tightly. She swung her legs back and forth. The swing creaked slightly. She was swinging pretty high now, Sasuke too.
He smirked a little.

“I can swing higher than you,” Temari said, grinning. She started to push herself higher, as if to prove that to him.

Sasuke chuckled.
“Riiight…”
Temari frowned and raised a brow.
“Didn't you see at the Ramen Match?” She grinned wider, cocking her head.
“I never lose.”

Sasuke actually broke out into a cocky grin.
“I won't lose either.”

Temari smirked, kicking her legs out.
“Fine,” she called, propelling herself higher, “Bring it on, pretty boy!”

It was a retarded sort of fun they had. Until Temari swung off balance and knocked Sasuke clear out of the sky. He yelled and landed a few feet away—on his ass.
Temari burst out laughing as she swung dangerously out of control. Soon, she flew off too—on top of Sasuke.

“Ugghhh!” He grunted, shoving her off. Temari rubbed her head, giggling. Sasuke sighed and rubbed his own head. Temari nudged him, smiling.
“I stayed on longer than you.”
“That wasn't the bet,” Sasuke muttered, brushing himself off. “I swung higher than you.”
Temari raised a brow, folding her arms over her chest.

“Nuh-uh.”
“Uh…yeah.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Uh…yeah.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Uh…yeah.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Uh…yeah.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Uh…yeah.”
“Nuh-uh.”

“Whatever,” Sasuke grumbled, standing up.
Temari put her hands on her hips and looked down at Sasuke, who was still sitting on the ground.
“You're just a sore loser!”
Sasuke scowled. Temari laughed and reached an arm out, helping him up.

Temari teased him the rest of the walk back to Sasuke's apartment. Sasuke would keep frowning and protesting, but he'd laugh and occasionally smile.
Neither paid much attention to the man that lurked in the shadows, following them home.
