Chapter Two:
It was late August, not as hot that year as the last. Each year it got less and less extreme in the St. Louis area. Lot of people blamed it on Global Warming. Not like many would want to blame it on themselves for destroying Mother Earth with their pollution. The weather was acting up, storms hitting randomly. All signs that schools were back in session, or would be within the next few weeks.
Konoha High School's first period began at 8:30AM. Konoha High was located in a nice area. People from all backgrounds attended, be it high, middle, or low class families. It was known for its peacefulness and its talented teachers. 94% of the students attended and graduated a college or university. The assortment of extra curricular activities was by far one of the largest in the midwest. From sports, to music, to the different kinds of clubs, the students kept themselves well occupied and out of trouble. A lot of the students continued their activites into college and even as careers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was Friday, so only a half day since it was the first day. Classes would last twenty minutes for the teachers to go over the rules and the criteria for that subject for the year. Then they'd get five minutes between classes. Students were being dropped off in front of the Main Building and others were pulling into their designated parking lots. Three parking lots, the Junior and Seniors got first choice to those, and the Sophomores got to park along the "Sophomore Block". The "Sophomore Block" would fill quite quickly because there was only enough room for about 25 cars along one side, and the other side was a no parking side.
It was nearing 8:30 and the students were slowly migrating inside. The sky had suddenly become dark and a flash of light filled the sky with a clap of thunder following closely behind, thus causing the students to pile into their buildings much more quickly before the rain started to fall. Two cars fought for the last spot in the closest parking lot, hurrying before they got caught by the storm. The silver '67 Shelby Mustang GT 500 beat out the '96 black Buick Skylark, forcing the driver to rush across the street to the next lot to see if there were any available spots there.
The driver to the Mustang stepped out of his car, wearing black Vans, almost completely hidden by his black, baggy pants, decked out with a few chains. A longsleeved fishnet shirt covered his upper body, holes cut out for his thumbs to slip through on his sleeves. Over that, he had one of his many concert shirts on. Sugarcult graced his chest that day. A couple silver rings were placed randomly on his fingers, and his famous wristband that he wore every day on his forearm. The wristband with his symbol. The Uchiha family symbol. Red and black gummies finished off the look on his wrists and a thick black necklace hung loosely from his neck with a dragon pendant hanging right in the middle of his chest. A couple earrings lined both ears up and around the cartilage. Topping off the male, would be his very own black rooster-tail hairstyle. Completely out of his car, Uchiha reached back in to grab his black bookbag and slung it over his shoulder, slammed his door shut and glanced up at the darkening sky. With a, "Hn." he set his alarm with his keychain and headed inside. The door closed, just as large heavy raindrops began to descend from the clouds.
Sabaku Gaara, last year's Junior President, sat patiently in his seat in the back, waiting for the class to begin so he could get on with the rest of his day. From the corner of his eye, he saw a bolt of lightning flash down from the sky. "Perfect," he said rolling his sky blue eyes.
Thirty seconds before the bell rang, Gaara heard the door open. 'Stragglers,' he said to himself as he averted his attention from the down pour to the door. Standing there, glancing around the room for an open seat, was Uchiha Sasuke. As Sasuke examined the room, he locked eyes with Gaara. 'You're kidding me.' they both said to themselves. And to both their dismay, there were only two available seats in the entire room, and they were both in the back by Gaara. Sasuke eyed the farthest seat from the man, and headed towards it, leaving a seat between them.
As soon as Sasuke reached his desk and sat down his bag, the bell rang. 'Made it,' he smirked, thinking of the poor bastard he beat out of the perfect parking spot. Right when he was leaning down to slide into his chair, the door to the room swung open yet again, this time to reveal a very irate blonde. 'Uzumaki Naruto,' both boys noted to themselves. Standing there, completely soaked, was indeed, Uzumaki Naruto. The tall boy with muscles you could clearly see through his drenched orange t-shirt, huffed before he looked up to find the person who did this to him.
Pointing an accusing finger straight at Sasuke, Naruto hollered, "TEME!!!" Sasuke was taken aback for a second before he realized that Naruto was the poor bastard he won the parking spot from. While realizing this, he unconsciously smirked at his luck.
The two never did get along. They always seemed to go out of their way to make the other's life a living hell. When the two went at it, the majority of the student population would clear out to save themselves. Those who didn't, either were pros at protecting themselves from the Uchiha and Uzumaki antics, or ended up in the nurse's office.
Before Sasuke realized what Naruto was doing, he was storming up the aisle right between his and Gaara's desks. "GAKI!" Naruto shrieked in Sasuke's face. "You did that on purpose!"
Sasuke, ready and willing for a fight with the boy, gave in to the temptation to get the boy more riled up. "What if I did? What are you gonna do about it?" he asked in a low enough voice that only those closest could hear.
Already on edge from waking up late for school that morning, and not getting a chance to eat his breakfast, Naruto was not in the mood to deal with the Gothic Prince today. But of course, as soon as he pulled into the parking lot and found a close spot, the asshole stole his spot! Him in his flashy classic car. Mommy and daddy spoiled his punk ass. So Naruto rushed across the street to the next set of lots, no luck! All filled! So he sped across the main road to the next lot by the "Sophomore Block". Nothing! Completely ticked off by now, he headed to the "Block". All the way down, to the end of the corner, he parked. Now he had to make a mad dash to his first class which was not only in the middle of all the buildings, but the room was on the second floor.To top everything else off, the bastard was in his first class! That meant, for an entire year, he'd have to put up with his shit. Yay.
Not wanting to hold back any longer, the blonde pulled his arm back to let go of his anger when a voice spoke up behind him. "Dore dore?" Swinging around, Naruto came face to face to a large man with wild white hair. "Ero-sennin!! Do NOT sneak up on me like that!" Naruto gasped, clutching his heart. He was not expecting that, not at all.
"Oi, Naruto, speak to your teacher with manners," Jiraiya said as he tapped Naruto on top of the head, with what looked to be a romance novel. Eyes wide, Naruto pointed at the offending object and asked, "We're NOT reading romance novels, are we Ero-...Jiraiya-sensei??"
Jiraiya who was on his way back to his desk, glanced over his shoulder and told Naruto to take a seat, before he finished walking to the front. Naruto scanned the entire room, now noticing all the people who were staring at him throughout the whole thing with the Uchiha-bastard. Trying to ignore the stares, he found he could not find a single open desk!
"Oi, Jiraiya-sensei, there are no open seats!" he whined. Looking up from the papers he was shuffling through, Jiraiya looked at Naruto like he had a second head. "Nani?!" Naruto shrieked, not enjoying the stares.
"You're standing in front of an empty desk, baka," the Uchiha so kindly informed the blonde. Turning around, Naruto saw that he truly was standing next to the only empty desk. A desk, he swore to himself, he would NEVER sit in. Basically, a desk next to the Ice Bastard. He glanced around the room to find a friend, well, an associate at least. Hyuuga Hinata was at the front of the class room. She was always kind to Naruto and she would not hesitate to switch, but damnit, she had to sit so close. Naruto, one who does some amazingly stupid things, does not care to be looked at. So front row was out of the question. A few other familiar faces seemed to not so nonchalantly ignore the blonde, and he knew he was out of luck, again.
Trying Jiraiya's patience, he walked up to the front, and stood there quietly, waiting for the English teacher to look up. The man sat there, acting as if he was oblivious to the boy standing in front of him, and continued writing a few things down and organizing a few papers scattered across his desk. Ok, so Jiraiya ended up trying Naruto's patience and Naruto broke first. "Damnit Jiraiya-sensei! Let me sit somewhere else!"
"No."
He took a breath to tell Jiraiya all the reasons why it would be better for everyone else's health for him to sit anywhere but near the Uchiha, but it was caught in his throat when the man looked up at Naruto with sharp, demanding eyes. Figuring pestering the Uchiha all year long seemed like a better idea than getting on Jiraiya-sensei's bad side, the blonde, who was still dripping wet, walked back to the last desk next to Uchiha Sasuke. He plopped down in his seat, and slid down to a slouch. Glancing to his left, he could still see Sasuke with that damned smirk on his face. Wanting to wash that smirk off his face, Naruto began to shake his head back and forth, spraying Uchiha as well as a few other innocent bystanders. Looking over at him now, he knew he had won. The smirk was gone...but, now he looked ready to kill. So perhaps, he didn't quite win after all.
Before he was about to ask the teacher to let him use the restroom, aka escape death from the Uchiha, a voice spoke up from his right. "Becha becha." Turning to see who it was, and give them a real earful, Naruto's mouth fell open. "Ga-Gaara? Dude! I totally didn't see you there!" Naruto leaned over to clasp the other man's hand in a man-hug. Both patting the other on the shoulder with their free hand.
"How are you, Naruto?" the red-head asked his old friend. He crossed his arms across the desk, shifting his position to listen intently to a friend he had not seen in quite some time. Ok, so basically it was three months, summer break, but the two were normally glued to the hip. Of course that was as long as Uchiha Sasuke wasn't around.
Naruto had begun to inform him of his oh-so-shitty day when Jiraiya cleared his throat. Ten minutes had already passed since the bell had rung at 8:30, but being a half-day, it was no big deal. The class died down from their chatter about what they had done over the summer and gave Jiraiya their attention.
He went through role call first, making sure everyone was there that was supposed to be, then he began to hand out papers. He went over each one, asked for questions or comments, and, with none, he dismissed the class a minute before the release bell sounded. With their extra few minutes, Gaara and Naruto stood outside of class looking over each other's schedules.
"Sweet! We have lunch, Study Hall, and Home-Ec together, Gaara!" Naruto smiled brightly smacking Gaara on the shoulder. The other man just grunted and kept looking down at the schedule in his hand. "Something wrong Gaara?" Naruto asked, leaning in a bit closer to his friend, worry flashing over his face.
"Ano..Naruto, meet me at the K during your off period?" Gaara asked, still not looking up.
Cocking his head to the side, Naruto just smiled and agreed, rubbing his hand over the paler boy's head. Gaara looked up at Naruto at the familiar action. "Naruto..." Gaara trailed off. All the old emotions came back, all by a single touch. Gaara wanted to meet Naruto at the giant K out in the Sunken Garden in front of the school where students met to hang out or study. He was so upset over the summer when his Naruto just up and disappeared.
Throughout the last 2 years, the two were practically connected at the hip. That summer, Gaara promised himself he would tell Naruto how he felt, no matter the consequences. He had to let the loud-mouth blonde know that he had feelings for him. After school had ended for that year, Naruto was to show up at Gaara's so they could head out to a bonfire, together. But he never showed. Never answered his phone. He went to his house, to make sure the blonde was ok, but no answer to his repetitive knocks. For weeks, hell all summer, he would drive by his best friend's home to see if he had returned. There was never once a sign of life in his small apartment.
After months of feeling betrayed, his best friend, who could not even call to let him know he was going somewhere, or that he was ok, just walks into class on the first day like nothing had changed. Gaara set his face as if nothing was wrong, so when he had the chance, he could really let into his "friend". But, that touch...
Shaking himself out of his memories, Gaara saw Naruto waving at him saying he'd see him in an hour. Realizing he needed to get downstairs and out to the N building for Chemistry, Gaara headed for the stairs, head swimming with memories.
Once Gaara was a few steps down, Uchiha Sasuke walked out of the classroom the boys were next to. With a smirk, the dark-haired boy headed for Gym with his schedule in hand.
Gaara sat in Chemistry with Mitarashi Anko going over the papers she had handed out (she had even given a quiz), before he was released to his next class. Throughout each class, he couldn't decide whether or not he wanted to be angry with the blonde teen, or tell him that all his old feelings were still there and he'd be willing to work things out. Yuuhi Kurenai was his Algebra 5-6 teacher. He had seen that Naruto had the same teacher, so they could study together for this class as well as some others. He smiled slightly at that thought. Maito Gai was his posing teacher, ano, Gym teacher. His nerves all in a bundle now, he headed out to meet Naruto at the K, thankful the storm had died down by now.
Naruto had History next with Hatake Kakashi. He knew that this was going to be one of his more favorite classes. Next Gym, with Maito Gai, followed by Algebra 5-7 with Yuuhi Kurenai. All the teachers handed out papers and discussed rules and criteria, just as Jiraiya-sensei did, so Naruto was on the edge of his seat for the release bell in Algebra. He was so bored!! Finishing early, Kurenai-sensei allowed the students to head out to their next class. Naruto, even though he was at the back of the room, was the first to dash out. He couldn't wait to get out.
As Naruto headed out, a ton of things went through his mind. He knew why Gaara wanted to meet him. He knew he acted like nothing was wrong. He knew he deserved a near-death beating by Gaara, but, he really hoped he wouldn't. He too liked Gaara. But he was more afraid of those feelings than he really thought. It never helped that no matter when or where the two were, Uchiha Sasuke would always ruin the moment right when the two would seem to get closer. He hated that bastard Ice Prince. Yet, he felt something with him as well. It was so confusing for him. For two years straight, after Naruto arrived to Konoha High, he was being pulled in all directions from Sabaku Gaara and Uchiha Sasuke, and neither boy knew it. No, not even Naruto himself knew it. Hell, he didn't even realize that he was attracted to those of the same sex. Perhaps he wasn't. Perhaps he was only attracted to Sasuke and Gaara. Yeah, he knew that's what it was.
Now, he had to tell Gaara where he went for the last three months with no phone call, no letter, not a damn thing. And Naruto was damn worried about the outcome. He figured he'd have a couple minutes to collect his thoughts since he got out a couple minutes early. Reaching the K, he took a step up onto the highest point of it. If you were in the sky and looked down, you'd see a giant K, hence the K. He set his bookbag on the concrete first, to not get his butt wet when he sat down, and plopped his butt down onto his paper-filled bag. He groaned and dug his elbows into his legs as he buried his face into his hands.
Gaara walked slowly towards the other side of campus, away from gym class. He was still at a loss of what he would say, ask, do. All he knew was his insides were turning inside out, but in a good way; the way they used to when he'd get to be around Naruto. He was almost there.
During Naruto's inner-turmoil, he hadn't noticed a shadow looming over him. Looking up, ready to face Gaara, and apologize to his best friend, he opened his mouth to say something, but all that came out was, "..Sasuke?"
TBC....
DORE DORE >> Informal phrase which loosely translates to, "Hello, what do we have here?" or "What's this?"
Gaara set his face as if nothing was wrong, so when he had the chance, he could really let into his "friend". But, that touch...
Shaking himself out of his memories, Gaara saw Naruto waving at him saying he'd see him in an hour. Realizing he needed to get downstairs and out to the N building for Chemistry, Gaara headed for the stairs, head swimming with memories.
Once Gaara was a few steps down, Uchiha Sasuke walked out of the classroom the boys were next to. With a smirk, the dark-haired boy headed for Gym with his schedule in hand.
Gaara sat in Chemistry with Mitarashi Anko going over the papers she had handed out (she had even given a quiz), before he was released to his next class. Throughout each class, he couldn't decide whether or not he wanted to be angry with the blonde teen, or tell him that all his old feelings were still there and he'd be willing to work things out. Yuuhi Kurenai was his Algebra 5-6 teacher. He had seen that Naruto had the same teacher, so they could study together for this class as well as some others. He smiled slightly at that thought. Maito Gai was his posing teacher, ano, Gym teacher. His nerves all in a bundle now, he headed out to meet Naruto at the K, thankful the storm had died down by now.
Naruto had History next with Hatake Kakashi. He knew that this was going to be one of his more favorite classes. Next Gym, with Maito Gai, followed by Algebra 5-7 with Yuuhi Kurenai. All the teachers handed out papers and discussed rules and criteria, just as Jiraiya-sensei did, so Naruto was on the edge of his seat for the release bell in Algebra. He was so bored!! Finishing early, Kurenai-sensei allowed the students to head out to their next class. Naruto, even though he was at the back of the room, was the first to dash out. He couldn't wait to get out.
As Naruto headed out, a ton of things went through his mind. He knew why Gaara wanted to meet him. He knew he acted like nothing was wrong. He knew he deserved a near-death beating by Gaara, but, he really hoped he wouldn't. He too liked Gaara. But he was more afraid of those feelings than he really thought. It never helped that no matter when or where the two were, Uchiha Sasuke would always ruin the moment right when the two would seem to get closer. He hated that bastard Ice Prince. Yet, he felt something with him as well. It was so confusing for him. For two years straight, after Naruto arrived to Konoha High, he was being pulled in all directions from Sabaku Gaara and Uchiha Sasuke, and neither boy knew it. No, not even Naruto himself knew it. Hell, he didn't even realize that he was attracted to those of the same sex. Perhaps he wasn't. Perhaps he was only attracted to Sasuke and Gaara. Yeah, he knew that's what it was.
Now, he had to tell Gaara where he went for the last three months with no phone call, no letter, not a damn thing. And Naruto was damn worried about the outcome. He figured he'd have a couple minutes to collect his thoughts since he got out a couple minutes early. Reaching the K, he took a step up onto the highest point of it. If you were in the sky and looked down, you'd see a giant K, hence the K. He set his bookbag on the concrete first, to not get his butt wet when he sat down, and plopped his butt down onto his paper-filled bag. He groaned and dug his elbows into his legs as he buried his face into his hands.
Gaara walked slowly towards the other side of campus, away from gym class. He was still at a loss of what he would say, ask, do. All he knew was his insides were turning inside out, but in a good way; the way they used to when he'd get to be around Naruto. He was almost there.
During Naruto's inner-turmoil, he hadn't noticed a shadow looming over him. Looking up, ready to face Gaara, and apologize to his best friend, he opened his mouth to say something, but all that came out was, "..Sasuke?"
As well as the direction of names being said. So, patience my lovlies, do not flame me on this subject, for you have been warned!! Sankyuu!
Key:
TEME sounds like TEH MEH. Informal and extremely rude way to say "you". Very popular word in anime. Using this word means you're looking for trouble
GAKI >> Informal term meaning "brat" or "young punk"
DORE DORE >> Informal phrase which loosely translates to, "Hello, what do we have here?" or "What's this?"
BECHA BECHA >> Slang used to describe a "chatterbox" or a really noisey converation (see PECHA KUCHA)
*The rest you should know, basic anime-fan words* If you don't know, just ask, I'll be more than happy to inform next time 'round ^__^
