Chapter Five

The Council

The second she hit the floor, she was ringed by cats. When anyone went try and wake her they were warned off very quickly by harsh hisses and growls. Finally when it seemed that everyone got the message the cats managed to move Sakura on to the back of one of the cats, who calmly stood up and walked out of the room.

“That went well,” Kakashi said after a minute pause. “I do hope that she will be home for dinner.”

Tsunade glared at him. Then sighed, she hadn't expected that. Well the fainting, yes, the upset atmosphere, yes, but the cats' reactions, no.

Kakashi only half listened as he watched the cats take Sakura into the forest, through the window.

The cats took Sakura deep into the forest surrounding Konoha. Then suddenly they stopped without warning and from the shadow more cats emerged. Not just panthers but other great cats as well. It seemed they were all represented. The tigers, leopards, lions, lynx, even the little house cats were all present as well.

The council of cats is now in session. The eldest panther growled as the assembly circled the unconscious girl.

What happened to our Kin, Shi'i'na? The eldest turned to the girl's guardian.

The great cat bowed her head. It was something the humans said to her, she went all white and fell over, I sensed from the beginning things were not going well so I summoned our kin to come and help.

It was a wise thing you did Shi'i'na. The non kin humans are not to be trusted. Now wake up your charge we have things to discuss.

Shi'i'na bent over Sakura and began to wash her face with her tongue. Sakura stirred and looked around.
“Shi'i'na, what's going on?” Sakura asked as she took inventory of her surroundings.

The humans said something to upset you Kitten. So I summoned our kin and called for the council.

That is correct.

Sakura turned to the new speaker, she was a panther of great age, but she apparently the leader of this particular group.

“So, um, now that I'm here what happens next?”

Do not be in such a rush little kitten. The elder hissed in amusement. We have a few things we need to discuss. First and foremost you need a proper name to be recognized by the council of cats.

Sakura nodded. “What kind of name?”

A secret name, every cat has one. You will be given it today, and the only people who may know it are me, your guardians, yes it appears you need more, and when the time comes your mate and cubs.

Sakura paled at the second mention of marriage in as many hours. The elder panther chuckled.

Do not worry little kitten now is not time to think of mates and cubs.

Sakura sighed in relief.

Now your name, you need one that reflects your inner self and you new heritage. I know, Ki'li'na'ra.

Sakura tested her name. “Ki'li'na'ra, I like it.”

The elder smiled, in a catlike way, that is good. Now the issue of the humans, we do not know them, their ways are strange to us but they have caused you harm, not physically but one does not faint for no reason. I will ask you only once what they said to you.

Sakura looked at the elder. She could lie and they would not question her, but she felt they deserved the truth. “They want me to marry a man and add my blood line gifts to the Konoha arsenal.”

All the cats hissed.

NO, that will not be permitted you can not be forced to mate. We will not allow it, we would also like to approve this human whose children would be our kin. He must be worthy of you, but he should be of your choosing!

Sakura nodded.

The cats were still hissing in anger, coming to the defense of their young sister, when the elder called for order. That is enough my kin. We will send her with more guards as we planned and have them keep away unwanted humans. Now that's enough for today. Those of you who were selected take her home.

Meanwhile back in Konoha, Tsunade explained again to the council of clans what happened. “What do you mean she was carried off by cats?! She is not exempt from our rulings she may be of our number but she must answer to us! We can't allow this power to escape us or be contaminated by another blood line. Our choice is perfect and will protect the fragile beginnings of her power.” The head of the Hyuuga clan ranted.

Suddenly Sasuke walked in. “What is going on and why was the council summoned at such a time.”

“Ah Sasuke there you are the council is now complete. We are here to deal with a new member and a new clan.” Tsunade said quickly before the other could start ranting again.

“Who is it?” Sasuke demanded.

“As if you don't know,” the Hyuuga clan head snorted angrily. “She is after all on you team.”

Before another word was said, Sasuke vanished.

Sakura returned to Kakashi's with her new bodyguards.

“What are your names guardians?” Sakura asked while she snuggled into the couch.

Silly little kitten, Shi'i'na growled fondly. Her other guardians circled her. She noticed that this time she had guardians of different species as well. Glancing at her three other guardians she waited.

Finally the male tiger growled. I am call Ha'ki'to, little sister.

I am She'li'na, Ki'li'na'ra. Her lioness leopard guardian growled.

I guess that just leaves me. I'm Ki're'na, Ki'li. The spotted cheetah female hissed.

“It's nice to meet you.” Sakura said respectfully.

“Sakura?! When did you get back?” Kakashi asked as he walked through the door. Her three new guardians growled at the stranger.

“More of them? I suppose I will have to keep the dogs outside for a while then.”

Sakura could only nod.

Who is he, Ha'ki'to demanded with fierce growl.

He is her human guardian. Shi'i'na replied.

His smell is on her…I don't like him.

He is fine Ha'ki'to. He won't hurt her.

I don't care; I still don't like him besides he likes dogs.

Now you're grasping for straws. She'li'na interjected. I agree with Shi'i'na he will be good for her.

Ki're'na purred her own agreement. He is strong he can take care of her.

Ha'ki'to, grunted angrily, but for the moment he was out numbered.

Kakashi and Sakura watched as the cats communicated. Sakura was blushing and giggling and Kakashi had a sneaking suspicion that this conversation was about him. He looked at Sakura.

“What was that about?”

“Don't worry?” Sakura said quickly. “Three of them like you.”

Kakashi looked warily at the fourth.

“And this one?”

“Um, he doesn't…” Sakura said, “but he is out numbered so he won't do anything.”

The cat snorted.

Suddenly the door banged open. All the cats circled Sakura and began to growl threateningly. Sasuke looked at the cats and then at Sakura.

She was making soft purring noises in an obvious attempt to clam the cats down.

“Now Sasuke was that really necessary?” Kakashi asked.

“I was just in the council hall when I heard the most interesting news, Sakura is joining the council. Do either of you care to explain?” Sasuke asked ignoring Kakashi, looking straight at Sakura.

“Well? I am waiting.”

Comments:

Well I suppose that's what I get for trying to predict myself, but you see I was struck by my muse while bouncing ideas off a friend and I simply could not help but add them to the story. Don't worry, we will meet with the human council eventually next chapter mostly likely, but as you can plainly see…I've never really been that good at keeping to my intended story line. As a result of this I have decided to remove the previews, or if you prefer, they wouldn't tell you exactly what will happen in the next chapter because even I don't know. If you have any thoughts or suggestions let me know

That's all for today
