/N: Hmmm... bear with me here. Usually, when putting these things forward, I have a few chapters and maybe even the whole story written... but this is quite literally 'in progress'. I loved the idea when I came up with it and although I'm new to the scene and unsure of whether its original or not, one does what one must. It's hard to come up with genuine and original material when it comes to fanfiction without the benefit of original characters. OC's in fanfiction are something I absolutely refuse to deal with. Just too much trouble and I don't like 'em. Sometimes its a matter of taking a cliche, over-used idea and completely turning it into your own while keeping that same boring plotline. Needless to say, I was a little fed up with the 'Poor helpless, feminine naruto' and 'Big, bad agressive Sasuke'. Tch! Let's give our blond-nin some credit, no?
Disclaimer; Duh... don't own it. Maybe if I finished my Animation course, I'd be seeing people writing fanfics about MY characters but seeing as I'm a complete slacker, I'll have to leech off of someone else's work... non-profit o'course!

Heat
Chapter One- Naruto's Birthday.
Naruto’s back hit the hard packed dirt floor, the air in his lungs exited out of mouth and nose in one big whoosh. His head followed the impact, bouncing like a rubber ball before he lay still, blinking back stars and learning how to breathe again. The heavy body on top of him felt like a sack of rocks, only making it harder for him to complete those lessons. Shoving off the offending weight, he growled and rolled onto his hands and his toes, body arched as he gained back his momentum.
“Stupid.”
“Bastard.” He snapped back at his attacker, leaning most of his weight on the tips of his fingers. “You’ll pay for that!”
“You guys... stop...” Sakura despaired, watching her teammates as they sparred verbally.
Unusually aggressive, Naruto moved forward snarling and reached a hand out, swiping at the Uchiha’s unguarded ankle. His movement was quick and fluent, his grasp was strong like a vice grip and caught him off guard, making him gasp and jerk backwards. His intrinsic reaction to being caught in Naruto’s grip caused him to go off balance which was further enhanced as Naruto stood, yanking foot– leg and all into the air. Sasuke grunted as he flung himself upwards, aiming a downward heel-kick at Naruto’s shoulder, which was caught easily by a free hand. With both ankles captured, Naruto grinned wickedly before launching his friend like a boomerang at the nearest tree.
“What the hell is wrong with you, Naruto?” Sakura yelled, running after the body of her secret love as he fly through the air like a misfired kunoi.
Sitting back on his haunches, Naruto tilted his head and looked perplexed. “He started it.” As if that statement would dissolve Sakura’s anger or heal the brutal bruises that would appear in the next day or two on Sasuke’s face, he sat and watched intently.
Kakashi took the time from his book to look up and glance at the squabbling teenagers. “Oi, knock it off you three. Go home.”
Luckily it was a broken rib that was easily fixed, thanks to Tsunade’s tutelage. “By the way, Naruto...” Kakashi added lazily, “Happy Birthday.” He turned and walked away, leaving a stunned trio at his back.
“It’s your birthday today, Naruto?” Sakura asked lightly after she had managed to heal Sasuke.
Naruto tilted his blond head upwards and stared at the clouds as they drifted above him. “I suppose.”
It donned on Sakura that after four years of being in the same group as the noisy boy, she hadn’t taken the time to know anything real about him. Sure, she knew he liked ramen and that he had no parents... but his birthday? “Happy Birthday then, Naruto.”
“I’m eighteen.” Naruto said it like it was the worst thing that had to occurred to him in his life. Both companions took note of the lack of constant enthusiasm in the blond’s voice. “I should be Hokage by now.” He grumbled before unfolding his long frame and wandering in the same lackadaisical way as Kakashi, back to town.
Unable to shake the pink haired girl, Sasuke eventually found himself at his doorstep where Sakura could go no further without an invitation she obviously knew she wasn’t going to get. She smiled sweetly before turning on his doorstep and waving, which went unreturned.
What was with Naruto? He was acting strange and was it just his imagination or did his eyes change colour for a moment. Shaking off those thoughts, Sasuke opted to fix himself something warm to drink as the day was much nippier now that it was autumn. The days were getting shorter and the trees had changed colour, soon it would be wintertime. Naruto’s birthday, huh? He grunted and wondered why that mattered to him.
He settled down with a mug of bitter tea in one hand and a book in the other with every intention of studying the rest of the day away. Unfortunately, the phone had other plans and decided to ring. No one knew his number but Kakashi and the man would never call unless it was an emergency. Why the hell Kakashi would call him when it was an emergency had plagued him since Kakashi gave reassurances that that was what he had intended when asking for it. Regardless, he was hesitant to answer the phone, opting to ignore it but after the seventh ring and seeing no end to it anytime soon, he picked up the phone. “What?” he barked, obviously never learning the importance of phone etiquette.
“Yo.”
“What do you want, Kakashi?” Sasuke asked, staring forlornly at the book and steaming mug of tea he had left on the table.
“Do me a favour and go check on Naruto. He shouldn’t be alone tonight.”
“Why? The idiot is always alone, why does tonight make any difference?” Sasuke growled, almost hearing his plans for a quiet, solitary evening crumbling.
“He acted sort of funny today, didn’t he?”
“So? He always acts funny. Cut to the chase.”
There was a pause before Kakashi spoke again, his voice no longer held its lazy drawl but was serious and full of steel. “He carries the Kyuubi, Sasuke. Tonight it’s his eighteenth birthday. He acted funny because the Kyuubi is probably restless inside. It is particularly strong tonight being that its his eighteenth birthday– just like it was strong on his ninth. Every nine years it makes an attempt to break.”
“You’re serious?”
“As death.”
With curse words uttered between promises to go and check on the stupid walking fox-demon incubator, Sasuke hung up the phone and took his mug to the sink where he poured the steaming liquid down the drain. So long for a calm night by myself, he thought grouchily before marching to the door and putting his sandals on.
