Heat
Chapter 2: Tastes like Winter.

Sasuke didn’t bother with knocking seeing how the door was unlocked to begin with. He didn’t bother to conceal himself, letting that be enough of a warning that he was entering. He kicked off his sandals and padded into the apartment, flicking on the hallway light as he went. Naruto sat in the middle of his livingroom floor, just like he was sitting in the forest after their training. He sat on his haunches with his arms in front of him, much like the way a dog sits— or a fox, he thought darkly. Naruto didn’t bother to acknowledge him as he moved deeper into his apartment, his head was turned towards the open window where the moon could still be seen.

“You look stupid sitting like that.” Sasuke grumbled, still a bit peeved that he was called by Kakashi to babysit. He made a mental note to change his phone number and not give it out to anyone but that would actually defeat the purpose of having a phone. Maybe, instead of changing his number he’d just cancel it all together. He settled himself on the couch but not before pulling a rolled up magazine out from under the cushion he had sat upon. He tossed it onto the coffee table and stared at Naruto.

He is being as vibrant as a dead catfish and usually, Sasuke would have been immensely pleased at that, but now it was disturbing him. Naruto sat in the same position he had been found in, staring at the moon with eyes that were slowly bleeding into red. He watched for any indication of a return to the usual loud-mouthed and cocky behaviour but after a whole half an hour, Sasuke was twitching with unease.

Standing, the dark eyed man tapped Naruto on the shoulder. He wanted this to stop. He wanted Naruto to pick a fight with him, wave a fist in the air and declare that he would be Hokage some day. He wanted him to step in dog crap and be stupid. A still, quiet and moody Naruto was not a fun Naruto. Only one person could pull off that persona and seeing how it was already taken up in the trio by none other than Uchiha Sasuke himself, Naruto just was creepy. “Oi!” A hand whipped out and grasped his wrist, yanking him downwards with a strength that almost made him whimper. Sasuke fell to his knees and stared straight into the eyes of the Kyuubi. There was not a piece or an iota of Naruto left in that gleaming stare. Only a hunger, deep like a void in those crimson orbs. “Naruto?” Sasuke said softly, fighting off the urge to tear his hand from his grasp.

“Yesssss?” He asked, the word long and drawn out, dwindling into a deep-chested growl.

“What’s wrong?” Sasuke asked cautiously, straining to keep the sheer terror that plagued his mind from showing on his face. He’d seen something similar to this before in the sand-nin, Gaara.

“Huungryyy.” Thankfully, the kyuubi-Naruto let go of his wrist and resumed his stance but the face didn’t swivel up towards the moon, it stayed there drawing Sasuke into the depths of its eyes.

“You want ramen?” Calling the blond stupid right now, whether he meant it or not decidedly not a prudent action. He watched as Naruto’s lips curled back to reveal canines that were longer than they usually were.
“No.” His slitted pupils dialaited before returning to their thin strips of black against crimson. Naruto growled softly, lurching towards him on the tips of his fingers and toes. Sasuke leaned back in an attempted to pull himself to his feet but found a hand heavy on his shoulder. He gasped as the hand pushed him down on the floor and the body covered over him like a blanket, casting eerie shadows from the moon and the hallway light. Sasuke’s body quivered like the string of a bow pulled taut. Ever fibre of his being screamed as that head swooped down on the smooth column of his neck. He felt as lips pressed against his skin and slowly opened, canines grasping gently at the junction where his neck met his shoulder. He realized that it was where Orochimaru had placed the curse.

“Naruto... stop.” Sasuke growled, not quite sure when he had taken his kunoi out or when he had placed it against his friend and rival’s neck.

As if the knife was of no consequence, Naruto brushed it aside as his mouth held fast on the Avenger’s neck. There was a low, ticking growl emanating from Naruto’s chest as his hands grasped the hilt of the knife from Sasuke’s fingers and drove it into the hardwood floor before promptly snapping the blade in half. Teeth slowly penetrated his flesh, making his wince in pain but he refused to utter a word as he was too proud to admit that he was truly terrified of the blond idiot. The mouth eased off the wound and a silky tongue brushed against it, wiping away the blood that was welling there. “You taste like winter.” Naruto’s voice hissed in his ear.

“And you better get off of me before I kill you.” Sasuke said, as calmly as his fear would allow him.

Naruto sat back on his haunches and tilted his head to the side, watching as the other man sat up and grasped his neck. The wound was literally pulsating, he could feel the blood had clotted but his chakra was actually oozing out of it. “What did you do, you bastard?”

“Tasted winter.” He licked his lips before standing to his full height, balancing delicately on the balls of his feet. Naruto let his head drop back, his face swathed in the moonlight, making his face and hair look like it was touched with frost. “And marked this winter as mine.” The words, how they were phrased, how they were said, indicated that Naruto was clearly not at home. It had been the kyuubi who had acted on instinct and that idea horrified Sasuke more than ever.

“This winter... as yours?” How poetic. It made Sasuke sick to his stomach that Naruto was actually being used by this monster... that he too, was being used by it as well, but what sickened him further was his inability to prevent it. Both were pawns to the powerful monster that resided in the vibrant blond.

A laugh, low and raspy echoed in the dark living room. Sasuke shuddered, feeling the kyuubi’s power brush against his skin. “Mine and mine alone, you are. The need for vengeance, the cry for blood is strong. Hate, vengeance, anger are my brethren, they herald the destruction, death and chaos that are my children.”

“I don’t need to avenge anyone. My brother is dead.”

The fox laughed again, that low and angry laugh. “Naive you are. Already thinking of vengeance against me for the wrong you feel I have dealt in claiming you as my own. Anger you have for my host because he is the thing you want most but can never have. Hatred is what you steep in, hatred for yourself for you parents’ death.” His head rolled to the side and finally down to stare at the ground, slowly he lifted his face up and glared at Sasuke, “Your thirst for vengeance will never be quenched.”

Sasuke was still sitting on the floor, staring up at the man as he weaved unsteadily on his feet. It was as if he wasn’t used to standing upwards and gracefully, Naruto dropped down and planted his palms on the floor between his knees. “Idiot...” He glared at his friend, trying to ignore the bite mark on his neck and the crimson eyes that seemed to gleam with the opacity of a cat’s.

“You can’t deny the pull. You are attracted to the power, aren’t you?” The Kyuubi grinned and scuttled forward on hands and feet, closing the distance between them.

Inwardly blaming the lingering affect of Orochimaru’s curse, Sasuke turned his face away from Naruto’s. “Who wouldn’t be?”

“Not everyone is hungry for it like you are.” Kyuubi purred, dipping his head down as if in attempt to breathe Sasuke in entirely. Hands planted themselves on either side of Sasuke’s legs as his head came up from his chest to rest on his shoulder, face turned inwards and mouth pressed against the collar of his shirt.

Sasuke was shocked speechless by the realization that Naruto had straddled his thighs. He looked up into Kyuubi crimson eyes and felt that he finally realized what it meant for the little bird to be staring the snake in the eye. He hadn’t felt like this since he had fought Gaara those years ago and he never wanted to feel that way again. There must be some shred of Naruto left! He thought desperately as the face lifted up and stopped just scant inches away from his own. “Naruto... if you can hear me... stop this.”

“He doesn’t want to.” Kyuubi growled, “He wants me to claim you, Sasuke. Did you know that he yearns for you? At night, he keens for you? Such a weak and petty emotion, love is.”

Despite the danger and the obvious lack of enthusiasm for the turn of events, Sasuke couldn’t help but feel the thrills leap up his spine as Naruto’s face loomed closer and closer to his. His lips brushed, like a feather, against the blond’s and immediately, he felt the Nine-Tail’s chakra smash into his body. The kiss deepened as the electricity sparked between them, hands like claws had somehow wrapped themselves in the collar of Sasuke’s shirt. “Stop...” He breathed between kisses, trying his best to gather his scrambled thoughts.

“Not while the night is young, Sasuke.” Kyuubi whispered, his voice quivering with anticipation.
