A/N: And here we are chapter 8. I want to thank everyone for their reviews. I'm absolutely stunned at the number of hits for this fic. On to answering some reviews. Snake-eat-dog: ^_^ I don't know about the best, but *blushes* thank you. There are far too many people who've never read Through the Looking Glass. I don't care how high the guy was when he wrote the book, it is a classic and I will always be thankful for the 7Th grade teacher who had us read it. Sneakyfox: I loved writing Temari. I based her attitude on my best friend from high school. Becki would say anything and was fiercely loyal. And yeah, it was about time wasn't it? Archfiend: Sorry, that is the only appearance Sasuke makes in this fic. As for telling her his feelings sooner, well he did. Kind of. LMAO But we all know you can't believe everything that's said during sex (chapter 5). And shame on me for not getting this up sooner. Gomen ne.

The song I picked is one of the most beautiful love songs. (In my humble opinion. LOL)
Elsewhere-Sarah McLachlan
I love the time and in between
the calm inside me
in the space where I can breathe
I believe there is a
distance I have wandered
to touch upon the years of
reaching out and reaching in
holding out holding in
I believe
this is heaven to no one else but me
and I'll defend it as long as I can be
left here to linger in silence
if I choose to
would you try to understand
I know this love is passing time
passing through like liquid
I am drunk in my desire...
but I love the way you smile at me
I love the way your hands reach out and hold me near...
Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free
the mold that clings like desperation
Mother can't you see I've got
to live my life the way I feel is right for me
might not be right for you but it's right for me...
I believe...
I believe
this is heaven to no one else but me
and I'll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
if I choose to
would you try to understand it
I would like to linger here in silence
if I choose to
would you understand it
would you try to understand...

Chapter 8
Naruto was quiet the entire way back to the village. Really no one spoke; they just jumped through the trees in silence. Once they got to the Konoha gate Temari and Hinata broke off from the group. Since Sakura was still unconscious, they were taking her to the hospital.
Temari and Hinata stood in front of Tsunade and fidgeted nervously. "I dunno," the blond from Suna began. "It was weird. His eyes were Sharingan, but as he spoke to her they changed. I know it was a genjutsu, but..." Temari looked down at the floor.
The Godaime clenched her jaw and let out a hissing breath. The two kunoichi in front of her looked like frightened deer. "It's okay, you weren't sent to fight him. There wasn't anything more you could have done. You may both go," Tsunade said, dismissing them with a wave of her hand.
****
"I'm telling you, 'Nata, it was the strangest thing. I mean yeah, I know what the Sharingan looks like, but this was different," Temari said in a quiet voice as the walked down the hospital hallway.
Hinata glanced over at Temari, who was still somewhat shaken by the incident. "I still think it shitty luck Tsunade was at the hospital. She's never here. Anyway, Neji told me about an upper level of the Sharingan. Mangekyo, I think it's called. There's at least two levels to it and it destroys the user's vision the more it used. *sigh* I remember the strangest things."
Temari snorted. "Well, whatever the fuck it was, Sakura looked like she'd seen Hell." The Suna nin shivered as a chill raced down her spine.
All Hinata could do was shrug her shoulders.

Shikamaru caught up with Naruto outside of the Hokage Tower. "Look, I know its bullshit, but orders are orders," Shikamaru told the jinchuriki as he fell into step with him. "Under no circumstances were we to engage in unnecessary battle. All we were doing was some intel gathering. Don't you think I wanted to kill that son of a bitch?" he asked not really expecting or wanting an answer.
Naruto looked down at the road. "I know it's just...I mean...I promised Sakura. I never go back on my word," he trailed off.
Shikamaru sighed and shook his head. He hated stating the obvious. "Oi Naruto! News flash: I really don't think Sakura wants Sasuke back. I realize you guys were best friends, brothers so to speak. But damn man, let it go. It'll just drive you crazy," Shikamaru glanced over a Naruto, who looked semi-depressed. "So...what's up with you and Hinata? When did that happen?" he asked trying to change the subject.
Naruto looked up and laughed. "Aw we're just friends. She didn't have anywhere to stay and I have some extra space," he answered with a stupid grin.
Shikamaru rolled his eyes. "Fuck you, just friends! I'm not some asshole on the street you're talking to, I'm your friend. What's really up? Dude, she's got it bad for you," he stopped at the gate to the Nara ranch.
"Why do I keep getting this lecture from everyone?" Naruto said to Shikamaru and Kyuubi. {Because, obviously you need to hear it more than once,} the fox growled at him.
Shikamaru narrowed his eyes at the chunin, "I really hope you're serious about her, because if you aren't...Just don't fuck her over Naruto. She's had enough shit for ten lifetimes."
"Oh yeah, I wouldn't know anything about that. Yeah, I didn't grow up hated for something I had no control over. Fuck that, I had nobody but myself. She's a big girl, she can make her own decisions," Naruto snapped.
Shikamaru leaned against the gate and groaned. "Look, if you want to be bitchy that's fine. I'm just saying there's some fragility there. If you're just messing around, tell her. I don't wanna ever see her like that again," he said, thinking about how unstable Hinata was after they brought her back from Lightning Country.
Three years earlier Konoha hospital
--------------------------------------
Shikamaru was just leaving as the medics burst in the emergency entrance. The screams pierced the quiet hush of the hospital. The ANBU medics started coming from every direction. Shikamaru glanced over at the commotion and his breath caught in his throat; he knew that girl. It was Hinata; she was covered in blood and lacerations. He stood frozen, his mind unable to process the scene before him. He saw a flash of pink hair and pushed through the few people who were gawking. An ANBU medic grabbed her by the arms and held her while another pumped her full of sedatives. At first her adrenaline kept overriding the sedative and she fought wildly against the medics. He could only watch in horror as the scene played out in front of him like a bad dream.
The medic made a move to inject her again and Sakura jumped in front of him. "Stop, you can't give her a double dose, it'll kill her. Give it a second," she snapped at the medic, who stepped out of her way. She drew in a sharp breath when she saw the amount of blood. She touched her healing chakra infused fingertips to Hinata's bruised face. "Kami...Hinata, what happened to you," she said in a soft voice.
Hinata's wild eyes shifted over to the medic. Tears began to well up in her opal eyes. "Sakura-chan," she sobbed struggling against the ANBU op's grasp. "Sakura, please," she screamed. Another medic made a move to grab her legs. She kicked her foot upwards and caught the medic under the chin. "Sakura," she wailed as she fought against the op. "They're going to kill me," she screamed. "Don't let them take me back! Please."
Shikamaru cocked his head to the side as he tried to remember if he'd seen their mission scroll. His eyes widened as his mind recalled the mission; recon near the Cloud village. He pushed the rest of the way through the medics to get to Sakura.
"Let her go, you're just going to hurt her more," Sakura yelled at the ANBU op. She glanced over and noticed Shikamaru. "Oi Shikamaru, come here. I need your help. You might have to hold her with Kagename," she barked at the lazy chunin.
"Her team was doing recon near the Cloud village," he told the pinkette.
Sakura's eyes widened as she took in Shikamaru's words. "No wonder she thinks someone is trying to kill her. Kami, they were." She looked down at the broken and bleeding heiress.
Hinata grabbed at Sakura's shirt. "Sakura-chan, please help me. Don't let them take me back," she wailed, as the pink haired medic wrapped her arms around the frantic heiress. Sakura could feel the blood soaking into her shirt; she didn't care. "Shh... We have you. You're safe now," she said in a soothing tone. "We won't let anyone take you back. Shhh." She laid the shattered Hyuga back down on the stretcher and glanced over at Shikamaru.
Hinata's eyes followed Sakura's gaze. "Shika...maru," she mumbled, the drugs starting to lull her into oblivion. "Tell Naruto...I loved..." She trailed off as she lost consciousness.
A look passed between the two nin. Shikamaru bent over Hinata and whispered, "You'll tell him."
----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------
*End flashback*
Shikamaru rubbed his eyes trying to erase the images that were burned on them. Yeah, if he never went through that again it would be too soon. He looked over at Naruto. "You do know what happened to her in the Cloud village, don't you?" he asked.
Naruto rolled his eyes {Kit, maybe you should consider listening to this one. He seems rather smart,} the fox suggested. 'Good to hear your opinion fur ball,' Naruto grumbled in his mind to the fox. He looked at Shikamaru. "Yeah, she told me they kidnapped her and tried to kill her. She's pretty sensitive about the scars, but I told her that all ninja have scars. Then she said something about 'some scars that will never heal'. That's pretty much when she lost me." {Absolutely hopeless,} Kyuubi sighed.
"You truly are a knucklehead aren't you?" was all Shikamaru said as he unlatched the gate to his property. He started towards his house.
"Oi," Naruto yelled to him.
"Yeah?" he asked as he turned around.
Naruto looked at him with confusion in his eyes. "What don't I know about?" he asked the lazy jounin.
"Meh. Come on, I'll tell you at my house instead of standing out here in the sun," the jounin sighed.
****
When Hinata got home she thought Naruto was still out. She yawned and threw her keys on the kitchen table. She opened the refrigerator. 'We really need to go to the store,' she thought. She almost had a heart attack when she closed the door and saw Naruto standing there. "Hi, I didn't know you were home," she said smiling at him.
Naruto looked at her for a moment and said, "Hinata-chan, we need to talk."
'Fuck,' she thought. 'This is not a good sign at all.' She followed him to his bedroom. Her mind and heart were racing as she sat on his bed. He'd been acting funny since they'd gotten back from their mission. "So, um...What did you want to talk to me about?" she asked picking at the bedspread.
Naruto sat down and looked at her; he really didn't know what to say. "Do you remember the other night when you told me about your scar?" She nodded at him and he continued, "You kind of eluded to the fact that there was more to the story, but I cut you off. Will you tell me the rest of the story?"
Hinata just looked at him and shook her head. "I really don't know why you want to hear the same story twice." She took a deep breath and continued. "I figure Shikamaru must of told you." She held her hand up to stop his denial. "Let's see...I was sliced open, drugged and raped," she said bluntly. "And I was mentally unstable and on sick leave for seven months. Really, this is old news," she said coldly. "Then because I refused to give up the shinobi life, my father gave me choice; quit being a ninja or quit being his daughter. I obviously chose the latter. Anything else you want to know about me?" she snapped.
"Hinata-chan, I had no idea..." For once in his life, he was at a loss for words. {Damn...You okay kit?} He ignored the fox. "I'm so sorry."
Hinata looked at him and rolled her eyes. She didn't want his damn pity. She thought he would be different. "Yeah, I'm sorry, you're sorry, every body's sorry. But it doesn't make a damn bit of difference does it?" She stood up and glared at him. "Was that all? Because I gotta go." She started to walk past him.
His hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. He looked up at her. "Go where? You're home. I love you. Did you really think that would be enough to scare me off?" he asked still clutching her wrist.
She looked into his bright blue eyes. "Wow," was all she could say as she sat back down.
Naruto stroked the side of her face. "Hinata-chan, the things that happen in your past shape who you are today; I'm in love with you today and I was yesterday and I will be tomorrow," he said wiping away her tears. "I just wanted to hear it from you to tell you that. I wasn't trying to upset you. Besides, Sakura, Shikamaru, Neji and Tenten have all said they would kill me if I hurt you," he said wiping away more tears.
"Wow. He is an awesome guy," she thought to herself. She smiled at him.
Naruto leaned back on the headboard and grinned. "Yeah, I am pretty awesome. Oh, by the way, I think it's cute the way you think out loud," he said patting the bed between his legs. {Told you, kit,} Kyuubi laughed.
She crawled across the bed and leaned back against him. "I'm glad someone thinks it's cute," she said snuggling closer to him.
He wrapped his arms around her. He kissed the top of her head, inhaling her lavender scent. "I'm sorry I wasn't here to protect you," he whispered, brushing his lips over her ear. "Kami, to think that you went through all that." {We will protect her from now on kit. She doesn't need to worry,} Kyuubi hissed in his mind. 'Yeah,' he answered the fox in his mind.
She nudged his shoulder. "What are you thinking about? You have such a serious look on your face," she asked him.
He looked down into her opal eyes and grinned. "You," he said nipping at her neck.
She shivered and wiggled closer to him. "Got a kunai in your pocket?" she asked in a sultry purr.
He grinned and nipped at her neck. "Nope, Just happy to see you," he answered.
She giggled and looked up at him. "You are too much sometimes. It's why I love you Naruto-kun."
