Chapter Six: Growth
Over the following weeks, Naruto started undergoing intense training sessions by all members of the pack aside form Sakura in combat, hunting, speaking, and transforming from animal to human and back again. All but the last were things he picked up and learned easily. After each successfully completed lesson, he seemed to grow a little larger or a little swifterspeed seemed to be his affinity.

After the first week and a half, he woke up with two more tails. He freaked out when he noticed them after his completing his morning ritual and tried tearing them off, thinking they were some prank until he saw blood ooze from the one he’d bitten.

The others, having sensed his distress, calmed him, but the occurrence set them to wondering what sort of Halfling he was. They had never seen on ewith double or triple tails before. They didn’t let Naruto in on their concern, aware that he’d only freak more and try to make himself “normal.”

Sakura’s pups were delivered when he was left alone with her three weeks after his lessons began; Lee had gone to investigate an unfamiliar scent while the othere were hunting once more in preparation for the oncoming blizzard. Instead of leaving to get help, Naruto refused to leave Sakura’s side and helped as much as he was able until, three hours later, four pups were nursing on their motherone pup had hidden from its mother’s detection, explaining why she had thought she was carrying triplets. There were two males, Yuki and Tsubasa, and two girls, Leeko and Nariko.

Naruto developed another tail the day after when all of the pack had returned.

By the time the pups were old enough and coherent enough to play, toddle, and venture outside the cave, the golden fox was slightly larger than twice the size he’d once been when he arrivedabout a month-and-a-half ago. He played with the pups, who called him Naruto-ojisan with their faltering vocalizations, and he watched over them when the rest of the pack was otherwise occupied, even as he practiced his transformations, It was hard to perform those exercises when there was a playful pup on each tail, but he tried to make the best of such circumstances.

Sasuke watched Naruto’s improvements with growing pride. Tehre was a warm feeling spreading through him with every moment he spent in the fox’s presence. He thrived on the golden’s happiness and comfort. His packmates were all aware of the situation. Their leader had fallen for the little fox, and though Naruto was a different species, they accepted the circumstances completely. Hinata and Sakura were actually very pleased with the fact that the two were involvedthough not officially as of yetand the healer even thought they might actually be mates.

Only time would tell.

The pack woke one morning to a brief scare when they could not find Naurto for the interval of five hours. Sasuke was about to call in reinforcements as he had two months ago, but then a young man came staggering unsteadily into the premises of the den. All five adult wolves bristled and went on defense, growling, but the pups went racing to meet the man, yipping happily and exclaiming, “Ojisan!” over and over again.

The man, more of a teenage boy, sat down abruptly, appearing exhausted and short of breath, panting. He was golden-skinned and -haired, eyes a deep, deep blue, and incisors lengthened and pointed into fangs. Three whisker-scars marked each cheek, and his body was lean with muscles more affiliated with running and speed than strength and brute force. He was dressed in black jean shorts.

“Naruto?” Sakura asked.

“Hello….Sakura-chan,” he panted with a weak, weary smile. “Staying in human form….really hurts. I don’t like it.”

“Is this your first successful transformation?”

He nodded, absently petting the pups and allowing them to lick his fingertips.

“How long have you been in this form?”

“Mmm….about three hours, I’d guess. It took me a long while to learn how to walk and get back here,” Naruto admitted.

“Three hours! That’s way too long. Change back now.”

“How?”

“Release your chakra,” Sasuke said, now in human form.

Naruto frowned, and expression that intensified when he closed his eyes and focused on doing as he was instructed. A release in spiritual pressure burst through the air, and plumes of harmless fire engulfed him before Naruto was back in kitsune form.

He now had six tails.

Tails that were promptly pounced on by hyperactive wolf pups.

Naruto merely laid down and allowed himself to be romped all over as he passed out due to exhaustion.

“Lee, I thought you were supposed to tell him only to hold the transformation for an hour,” Sakura accused as she removed her children from their adopted uncle.

“I-I thought I did. I must have forgotten,” he stammered.

She rolled her eyes. “I don’t know why I put up with your foolishness.”

“Because you’re mates, and you were made for each other,” Hinata said softly.

“Obviously,” Neji muttered.

Sakura curled her lip at the other male.

“Hush! Naruto needs to rest,” Hinata said before the two “friendly rivals” could really get into it.

All of them nodded and corralled Tsubasa, Yuki, Leeko, and Nariko into the den while the sun warmed golden fur and relaxed lean muscles soothingly.
