Chapter Seven
Naruto sat atop the den, keeping a careful watch over the half-grown pups as they frolicked and practiced the combat skills. He smirked inwardly in amusement. Nariko was trying to show off for her “uncle” while Leeko and Yuki kept thwarting her efforts. Tsubasa suddenly stopped tugging on Yuki’s tail to perk up and look into a different direction.

Alert now, Naruto stood and growled. He leapt to the ground, sniffing the air alertly. Anger flashed through him, as well as protectiveness and bloodlust. His enemy had arrived, coming back for revenge.

“Go inside,” he commanded in a low, authoritative voice.

The pups yipped and scrambled, never having heard the tone in ojisan’s voice before.

Naruto took up a defensive stance, waiting for a total of five minutes before Orochimaru appeared. The rogue wolf, coal-black fur glistening dully and yellow eyes evilly curious, paused and tilted his head.

“Naruto, I presume? My, my, my, but you have grown,” he uttered smoothly. His gaze went lazy and obtained a different glint, a sparkly that Naruto had see in Lee’s and/or Sakura’s gazes when staring at each other, only with a sadistic twist.

Lust.

Naruto felt an invisible tremor wrack his body, and he tensed and growled warningly.

“Is your pack not here, Naru-chan?” He paused. “Ah, the little one, but not the adults. How….intriguing. I believe I will take advantage of my good fortune.” He chuckled, then streaked forward.

Naruto watched and jumped five feet in the air so the wolf went under him before grabbing said wolf’s tail in his mouth, swinging the larger canine away from the entrance of the den. He’d be damned if he allowed the precious pups get hurt by this bastard.

The wolf growled and charged him, intent on staking a claim on the six-tailed gold fox. Naruto, unprepared, let out a yelp as ribs broke. Why is it always my ribs? The bastard was stronger than he’d remembered. He didn’t let the pain incapacitate his performance, however; he drove straight of the wolf’s throat, only to be met by a large, thick, human leg. Not to be distracted, he latched on and tore a chunk out, tossing the flesh aside.

Orochimaru, human and naked, roared and dove for the injured fox. Naruto dashed away, sending pain screaming through his nervous system. Orochimaru somehow managed to grab a tail and held him airborne, about six feet from the ground. The fox retaliated by twisting up, despite the agony, to latch onto the wrist there, biting deep and puncturing an artery so that blood spurted down his throat and arced over the ground, spraying on the trees. The rogue drove his other hand into the fox’s ribs, breaking two more ribs and digging in the flesh and tissue.

The fox’s blood sprayed and combined with the rogue wolf’s.

Orochimaru cackled wickedly as the fox went limp and panted through the anguish clouding his mind. Then the wolf shrieked as four half-grown wolf pups attacked him viciously simultaneously. How dare someone harm their Naruto-ojisan! They were quick and lethal in their intentions, and Naruto was dropped to the ground like a forgotten rag doll. He watched as the pups managed to repeatedly injure the rogue without injury aside from bruises.

Then Orochimaru suddenly threw them off and was about to strike down little Nariko, the youngest and weakest of the four. Naruto quickly mustered up enough energy to shove the pup out of the way so that he was the one to be crushed under that foot.

Sickening crunches rang through the otherwise quiet forest. A gloom settled over the day as the life force within the golden, six-tailed fox started to rapidly dim. Immature howls of sorrow and soul-wrenching despair screamed out of four wolf Halflings as the rogue slowly stepped back from his unintentional victim. Stunned and incredulous, the rogue stumbled back, covered in bites, scratches, bruises, and blood, before turning and retreating, only to be struck down by a normal-wolf-sized, blood-red fox with five tails, the tips of which were black instead of the usual white.

The rogue was viciously, slowly killed by the newcomer while the wolf pups gathered around the dying fox. Whimpers and tears fell from them, even the ever-stoic and serious Tsubasa. They huddled closer when they saw the fox shudder, as though cold.

The blood-red fox came over, the blood on his fur impossible to detect. He bent over the five smaller Halflings and breathed over the golden’s body, sending a wave of chakra-induced warmth over him to prevent him from dying of shock until his pack came. Then he whispered into the drooping fox ear, “You must live, otouto, and be there for he who loves you. You are his only hope at happiness. My otouto, I also need you.” He passed his tongue over a bloodied cheek. He straightened and looked to the pups before racing away.

It took only fifteen minutes for the blood-red to find the adults of his brother’s pack. He stopped right in front of the most aggressive, Neji. He barked out a laugh when he was instantly attacked. “How amusing that here I come to alert you of your packmate’s imminent demise for your children to witness, and you attack me before I can warn you.”

The wolves froze, staring incredulously and with growing horror.

“Better hurry before it’s too late,” he singsonged and disappeared from sight.

Sasuke stood frozen in place for all of eight seconds before he shot off in the direction of his den. His eyes threatened to spill tears at the concept of finding a dead golden fox with the pups surrounding. He prayed with all his heart that it was just a bad joke.

But no, those prayers fell on deaf ears.

His soul screamed when he saw a limp fox surrounded by weeping pups. He changed to human and scooped the limp body into his arms. He gently stroked the blood-soaked fur, weeping as the pups were. Sakura came to them and removed Naruto from Sasuke’s arms, despite his protests.

I promised that I would keep him safe, he scolded himself despairingly, watching through a haze of tears as the healer worked to save the little fox’s life. I swore that I’d never allow harm to ever come to him again, even if it cost me my life, and I failed. I failed, and now he’s dying.

“Sasuke, he is still alive,” the pink-haired human form of the healer-Halfling said softly. “You’re sorrow….he feels it, even in this state. It’s distressing him because he doesn’t know what’s causing it. He needs to rest, but he will not be able to if you continue to weep.” Her tone was gently as she explained to him of this obstacle.

“Come, Sasuke-san,” Hinata beckoned. “We should remove Orochimaru’s body.”

Sasuke glanced at the mangle corpse, then back to the poor, golden-furred, blue-eyed kitsune. He was torn. A gentle tugging on his arm from the blue-haired she-wolf helped him decide, and he reluctantly assisted in hauling the mangled, dismembered body of the rogue wolf who had been the bane of Sasuke’s life since the bastard had mutilated his older brother.

Dagger: Aww, poor Naruto!
Knives: You’ve said that once before, I believe.
Dagger: I am truly horrible to the kitsune, but I can’t help writing it. I blame my voices. They make me do whatever they say. They’re kinda like my muses. All seven of them. -_-
Danny-boy: You’re supposed to be taking medication for that.
Knives: She misses the voices when they go away, and then she goes all paranoid and starts screaming that it’s all my fault and I don’t love her. So I flushed the pills.
Danny-boy: What does her doctor say?
Knives: I killed him.
Danny-boy: *frowns*Why?
Knives: He made her cry.
Danny-boy: How?
Knives: He yelled at her. She doesn’t like to be yelled at by people that aren’t me or her friends, and he told her the voices are real.
Danny-boy: Awwww. You’re such a wonderful brother
Knives: …..Whatever…..
Dagger: Reviews please!!!! XD
