Chapter 13- A storm on the Horizon
"...He's the only one left..." In between the tears, he only heard a few phrases, a muttered utterance hear and there, and caught them starring at him sympathetically.
"all alone... Poor kid..."
He clenched his fist, what did they know about loss? Nothing. As he looked up, his eyes fell on the forlorn and broken body of his mother, pale, yet as beautiful as she had been in life. That day, something inside him broke, some part of him that he seemed to lock away, as he looked at his dark haired, pale skinned mother, laying in her death bed, eyes closed forever. That day, he was hit with the realization that he was alone, all because of his older brother, whom he had trusted so wholy. This is were trust and love got a person, Sasuke decided, a one way ticket to a life of seclusion. As the tears stopped, he wished he could go back, he knew he would give anything to have her back...to have family.
"Naruto, do you have any idea what you're giving up?" He looked up at the blond, grimacing with the power of hell reflected in his eyes.
Naruto matched the glare, but faltered slightly, casting a sideways glance at Aza, who's tears had dried on her cheeks as she watched the exchange. She licked her lips, standing slowly, and stepped towards Sasuke, "I'm sorry Sasuke...but...what happened, after I left? Why...why are you defending me?"
Sasuke turned to her sharply, almost as though to yell at her, but his eyes softened as he saw her, and his shoulders slummped.
The silence in the room, at that moment, seemed to cover them all, like a newly fallen snow, leaving room for only quiet contemplation. At length, Tsunade ruffled a few papers on her desk, coughing quietly. "Aza...six years ago, the entire Uchiha clan, save for Sasuke, was...murdered by Itachi."
In a flurry of layered skirts and clanging gold anklets, Aza had her arms around Sasuke, tears once more staining her cheeks. "You poor...poor boy! At such a young age, to be alone in the world?" She paused, "With no one to take care of you..."
Naruto glarred at the interaction, clenching the letter in his fist, "You mean like me? After you left me?" Aza turned swiftly, leaving a stunned Sasuke to ponder the rather sudden hug.
"Naruto!" But it was too late. With the slam of a door, Naruto had left the room, a yellow letter fluttering to the floor below, casting it's shadow on the wall as it descended. Half stumbling, as though trapped between dream and reality, Aza stooped to pick up the letter, it's edges torn, surface wrinkled. "He..." She clutched it to her chest, "He left..."
Sasuke snorted, rolling his eyes, "He'll come back. I'll make sure of it." As Sasuke walked towards the door, everyone watched as Aza glidded towards him, turning him to look at her. Tears welled in her eyes and she placed the letter in his hand. "Please bring him back to me... I can't stand to lose him, not after I left him. God..." She slid to her knees, "I sound like a terrible person... but...I am... I'm a terrible person..." Sasuke watched her with onyx eyes, watched as she looked at him with the lost eyes of a weighted soul.
"I'll bring him back." Words of finalization, uttered before he turned and left, were words of comfort to the forlorn gypsy.
"Naruto."
Naruto turned away sharply, his feet dipping into the water at the edge of the dock.
"You can't run away..."
"Why? She left me! Why can't I?"
Sasuke sat next to Naruto, watching the setting sun and glarred, "Are you like her? Do you run away?"
Silence. "No...but..."
"No buts, dobe. Either you run away or face her. This can determine who you are. But know this..." Sasuke stood, watching Naruto as he did, "If you run away, you lose every once of respect that you have gained from me."
As he walked away, he heard Naruto stand, and heard him whisper, "I can do this... I can face her."
Smirking, Sasuke thrusts his hands into his pocket and walked home, where no one waited for him.
"I'm home..." Force of habbit forced him to call out as he entered, glancing around to assure that everything was in it's proper place, which it always was.
But one thing, on this night, caught his eye. A shadow in the corner, a person in the room. In a flash, he was there, kunai at the figures throat, but dropped the weaopns as he recognized the lost eyes of a gypsy long gone. "The Hokage told me that you were alone here...I let myself in..." She looked down at him, as he looked away as though in shame. Bending to his level, she smiled, "Sasuke, do you want me to sing you a song?"
Sasuke scoffed, "That's so childish..." His eyes, however, betrayed the lie, and Aza smirked. "Ahh, you do want a song, ne?"
Sasuke snorted, "No, I don't need a song."
Aza sighed, her shoulders slumped in defeat, "Oh...okay...I see. Well, I'd better go."
God knows he wanted to become a child again, to cry for her to stay and sing to him, but God knows that he wanted to exude power, to prove he was in no need of her comfort. So he went with self preservation, and allowed her to walk out the door, noticing as a side note that the wind had picked up speed, and debri flew everywhere. A storm was on the horizon, and Sasuke knew that he would be a V.I.P with front row and back stage passes to the coming storm.
