Kakashi lead the way down into the underground basement that served as the club. It was one of a dozen he knew in the area to frequent, the red light district wrought with them. Kakashi had forgone his forehead protector after advising Gai to do the same. In some places, you didn't want the instant recognizability of a ninja, after all. An eye patch served just as well to cover his sharingan, his mask fitting well enough with his 'clubbing clothing' to not need to be replaced.

He still couldn't believe Gai followed him here, though.

Glancing around Gai took in the flashing lights, loud music and often rather odd seeming apparel. Contrary to what his rival seemed to think Gai was by no means a complete novice to clubs. He had been to a few when he was younger but had never quite developed a taste for it. Of course a lot had changed since then and he was once more overwhelmed by everything.

Kakashi moved through the crowds like a fish through water, easily taking to them. Clearly he'd been to them more recently then Gai... probably frequently. "Wanna get a drink?" he asked, figuring he may as well offer.

Nodding Gai was grateful that Kakashi offered, it spared him from having to figure out what to order himself. He felt vaguely underdressed although what he did wear would have fitted in perfectly if he hadn't been the one wearing it. The clothes Kakashi had made him wear were a lot more daring than the jumpsuit he normally wore even if they were just as tight, seeing as they were supposed to fit Kakashi's leaner body and not his own. .

Kakashi had been generous with Gai, dressing him just enough to blend in and not stand out.

He, however, was dressed in what seemed as little as decently possible. After all, Kakashi did come here to get attention. As he slid up to the bar and ordered them drinks, he caught sight of an attractive enough woman... looking at Gai? She made her way over to him, looking at him curiously.

"...Maito-kun?" the woman asked when she was close enough to be heard.

Turning towards the voice Gai blinked in surprise. " Ayume-chan?" Surprise was clearly visible on his face. But who could fault him for it. Before him stood a walking dream, well at least for Gai. A few years ago Ayume had been the only person he had wanted to have a family and grow old with. However every time he had asked her out she turned him down. Some time later she got engaged to a civilian reporter for Konoha's newspaper. "Is that really you?" he asked again in baffled disbelieve.

Ayume's face brightened into a dazzling, confidant smile. "Wow! Fancy meeting you here, Maito-kun! I never thought I'd see you again!" she seemed overjoyed at seeing Gai, for being a 'married woman'...

Gai nodded again as if in a trance. "What a great surprise!" A brilliant smile settled on his face looking like it was here to stay. "How have you been?" It was good to see her again. At least it meant he wouldn't have to stand in a corner and watch Kakashi do whatever it was Kakashi had wanted to come here for. Not to mention that the attraction he had felt for her was like a dry stack of wood just waiting for a spark to fall to burn once more.

"I've been managing!" Ayume said, brightly. "I ran into Tatsuki recently-" wait, wasn't Tatsuki the name of the reporter she was engaged to? "...Needless to say, I feel a lot better now that I've gotten a chance to really yell at him like the man deserved."

Kakashi observed from a distance, leaning back against the bar. Even dressed as he was, he could be a shadow when he wanted to be.

"Tatsuki?" even knowing that he probably shouldn't ask Gai couldn't stop himself. That hadn't sounded as if she was as happily married as he had so often assumed in his cold and lonely bed. "What happened ?"

Ayume blinked a few times, then let out a little gasp of realization. "Oh! That's right, you never heard, I guess! ... Well the marriage, ah, didn't exactly go as planned. ... In fact, it didn't really happen at all." Ayume gritted her teeth a little at the memory of the event. "A week before, I come home early, find him in bed with not one but TWO other women. Needless to say, it was quite over at that point."

"I'm sorry to hear that." Gai responded. Although he had imagined himself in love with Ayume he had always hoped that she had found happiness with her fiancé. "Sorry for brining up bad memories. Can I make it up to you somehow?" Maybe he could buy her a drink and they could chat about the old days and what had changed since then.

Ayume actually looked embarrassed for a moment at the question. "Actually, you know... It's really lucky I ran into you. Ever since what happened with Tatsuki, I've always been kicking myself over... well, turning you down."

"Lucky....?" Gai was certain that she couldn't mean with her last words, what he thought she meant. "Why don't I get us something to drink and you can tell me all about it?" he hedged.

Ayume flashed Gai another brilliant smile. Really, although she was average as far as looks went, her confidence made her seem even more beautiful. "I'd love that."

At the bar... Kakashi was nowhere to be seen.

Not having spotted Kakashi at the bar Gai felt an odd sense of disappointment. Returning to Ayume with the two drinks he let his eyes wander over the crowed of people, somehow hoping to spot the unique mop of sliver hair. Putting the two glasses down Gai smiled at the woman. "So what was it you wanted to say?"

Ayume's eyes scanned the crowd as well, as if hoping to catch a glimpse at whatever or whoever Gai was looking for. "I... was wondering if you were still single... If you'd give me another chance?"

It was at that moment the silver hair could be seen between crowds of people- ... between two people in particular, in fact. Kakashi was on the dance floor, doing some grinding of hips that could only be called a dance in the loosest terms and was probably closer to 'sex with clothes on', between two people. A very attractive woman at his front, and a very attractive man at his back.

A hint of sadness coloured Gai's eyes as he finally discovered Kakashi, but it got only more pronounced as he turned back to Ayume. "I'm sorry Ayume-chan. But..." he stopped not sure how to best put this odd thing between himself and Kakashi into words.

Ayume's face fell in disappointment before she managed a smile again. "Oh, it's okay. I figured you probably found someone by now, I guess I was just hoping I was extra lucky!"

"I hope you will have better luck in the future." It was the only thing Gai could come up with. Again his eyes drifted towards the gyrating figure of the sliver haired cop-nin and his dance partners.

If it was any consolation, Kakashi honestly... didn't seem terribly interested in his partners, upon further inspection. With Gai, he had of course cared about getting himself off, but he did seemed to genuinely care for Gai as well, no matter how hard he tried to hide it. With the two people he was with, it was like they were just a means to an end as he was lost in the bumping and grinding of their motions.

Ayume caught where he was looking this time. "...You know him?" she asked, worried.

"Sometimes I'm not sure about that." Was the cryptic answer that fell from Gai's mouth before he could think about it.

Ayume clicked her tongue, worried for Gai. "I've seen that guy around here a few times, I don't think he's good news, you should probably stay away from him..." she warned, not connecting that maybe this was the person Gai was talking about.

"Not good news?" Gai turned back to her forcing his eyes away from the dancing figures: "What do you mean?"

Ayume shrugged, not really wanting to offend Gai but wanting to warn him just the same. "Well, every night I see him here he leaves with someone different, you know? Friend of a friend slept with him a few nights back, apparently he's dynamite in bed but a total ice queen, and gone before sunrise. If he's like that to people he's sleeping with, he can't be a very good friend, either."

A small twitch of annoyance had Gai facing away from her again. He wanted to defend Kakashi, although he knew that it would make no difference in any way. "He's the best rival and friend anybody could ever have." he finally muttered unwilling to let her comment slide.

Ayume coughed at Gai's comment, unaware that the two were so close from his statement before. "AH! Well, some people, they can have two faces like that, you know?"

Right now the face Kakashi had was gasping out in ecstasy as he rubbed against his two partners to the beat of the baseline. As they moved, the man exchanged a look with the woman, then leaned in to whisper something into Kakashi's ear. Whatever it was, Kakashi seemed to like the sound of it.

Sipping at his drink Gai felt the smooth burn of the alcohol as it travelled down his throat, but it did nothing to soothe the queasy feeling in his stomach as he once more watched Kakashi and his two good looking companions. Ayume's comment reminded him of the dream he'd had on the way back from the Onsen mission where everything had changed. " Are they really two faces or are they both masks" he mused softly, finishing his glass in a few generous sips.

Ayume drank only as much of the alcohol as she knew she could hold, continuing to watch Gai with concern. "Hm?" she asked at his comment.

The short sound was enough to jerk Gai back into the present and he put his glass back down on the table. "Nothing of importance." he covered his slip up. While grateful to have met the woman sitting opposite him again, Gai seriously wished he hadn't said yes to Kakashi when the other had asked him to come along and he squirmed a bit in his seat.

Casting another glance to where Kakashi was on the dance floor, Ayume began to realize what their relationship could possibly be. "...Look, Maito-kun, you wanna go someplace? Just as friends?" Gai wasn't suited to places like this, after all.

Smiling gratefully Gai shook his head. "It's very nice of you to offer Ayume-chan, but ... I have to stay." Not only would it be admitting defeat to his eternal rival but it would also be running away from the facts of Kakashi's life, Gai was unwilling to do either. "Would you care for another drink?" he offered instead as an appeasement.

"Come ooooon," Ayume grinned, like a kid with a secret. "We walk out of here with me hanging off your arm, make him insanely jealous, and then just go catch a movie or something."

“Jealous?!" the word sounded rather ridiculous when connected to Kakashi. Gai had difficulties imagining anything that would be able to evoke it in the usually hip and cool copy-nin. "I don't know what you're talking about!" he hurried on trying to sound honest. It wouldn't do to have anybody think they were actually anything more then rivals.

Ayume rolled her eyes, but smiled at Gai softly, reaching out to take his hand in her's. "Look, I understand I missed my chance with you, I'm not aiming for that, okay? ...But believe me when I say that kind of unfaithfulness doesn't work in a relationship. And trust me, *I* know. "

Flustered Gai glanced at their hands then at her, her smile bringing back memories of the time he had been head over heels in love with it and everything else about this woman. Shaking his head to clear these thoughts out he looked her squarely in the eye. "I'm afraid you misunderstand Ayume-chan. He is my rival and a friend. Nothing more. I have no influence on whether he will spend an hour, the night or whatever with these people." Hearing the truth was, much like letting a wound drain of puss, almost unbearably painful but necessary.

Letting out a sigh, Ayume reluctantly accepted what Gai said. "Okay... But let me give you my number in case you ever change your mind?"

"Of course!" the usual enthusiasm resurfaced. "We should meet up sometime and properly reminisce about what happened the last few years." Gai nodded his hair bouncing with the movement. Pulling out a small notebook with a pencil stub attached from 'somewhere' in the indecently small trousers he was wearing he offered it to his companion with a smile.

Ayume took the pencil and notebook with another bright and winning smile, scratching down her number and address for Gai. "Really, don't hesitate to call, okay?"

"It is very nice of you to offer me this after ..." Gai trailed of, unsure on how to put 'I rejected you' into a polite phrase. "Well, after all that's happened." he finished finally just so that the sentence wouldn't hang in the air for the rest of the night. "Are you sure you don't want something else to drink?"

Ayume laughed and waved a hand. "Oh, no, but thank you. I know just how much alcohol I can handle through years of trial and error. I can buy you another, though, if you'd like? Pay ya back for the one you bought me."

"Oh no that's not necessary. I'll get it myself." Gai turned down her offer before diving into the mass of bodies and weaving his way to the bar once more. There he had to wait for what seemed like hours before he finally could order.

Out on the dance floor Gai caught sight of Kakashi and his companions stopping their movements, though reluctantly. That didn't seem to be the end of it, however, because as Kakashi's two companions went for the door, Kakashi went along with them.

Gai caught Kakashi's eye across the sea of people, a shiver passing down his spine at the lack of anything but lust in the gaze he knew so well. Shaking his head slightly Gai hid his disappointment even from himself and smiled at the other man before turning to the barkeeper that had finally appeared and ordering a double shot of Vodka. That certainly would be more than enough to keep him from having to think about what his rival would be up to all night.
