Flashbacks and Interludes Part 1

USS Nimitz: Flight Deck: September 19, 2004

Shinji and the rest of Mobius squadron sighed as they guided their plane into the Nimitz's confined flight deck. As he neared the edge of the flight deck, Shinji kept his plane's speed above stall speed. When he felt the wheels of his aircraft touch the ground, Shinji throttled his turbojets into maximum thrust just in case his plane fails to engage one of the four arresting wires. Shinji felt relief when the plane suddenly halted to a stop, meaning that the tail hook caught one of the arrestor wires.

When all of them had gotten out of their fighters, there was a lot of cheering and applauses heard in the background. When they walked towards Captain Fisher, they saw he was smiling.

"Congratulations for your first successful mission Mobius squadron!" The captain's words drew more cheers from the crew. "Especially you, Shinji, you have become a gret fighter pilot, just like your parents."

Shinji felt a bit nostalgic about that remarks. It's been a long time since he "saw" his parents. He was visibly fighting back tears although only Asuka noticed it. Everyone was too happy to notice. She walked up to Shinji and took his hand in hers.

"Shinji, are you okay?" said Asuka, her voice tinged with worry. Shinji managed a small smile.

"Yes Asuka, I'm fine." Shinji said although Asuka wasn't buying it. After a few moments, she just let it go.

"Alright."

USS Nimitz: Pilots' quarters: September 19, 2004

The pilots were already sleeping soundly in their own respective quarters. After the day's events, they were all exhausted although they were quite happy because they successfully defended Allenfort Airbase and the ISAF GHQ.

Shinji began to dream of the main reason he joined ISAF to fight the Erusians…

*** FLASHBACK ***

Jefferson Air force Base: Briefing Room: Date Unknown

The briefing room was packed full. A man who seems to be 5'9 in height, muscular in build and is 39 years old stood in the front. The man was the Supreme Allied Commander of ISAF, Gerard Schoerberg. He cleared his throat as he was about to begin the briefing of the most dangerous and most important mission to date. Everyone fell silent.

"Ladies and Gentleman, I believe that now that we have gathered enough aces and warplanes, it is now the time to strike the enemy. I believe that all of you have heard of Stonehenge, correct?"

He received his reply by the form of a nod in the room.

"As you all know, Stonehenge is the international project by the members of the international community that was intended to destroy or shoot down the remnants of the Ulysses1994XF04 asteroids." He flipped a switch.

The room became darker and the once blank board showed eight cannons that formed a circle surrounded by construction facilities. Everyone in the room gasped.

"This photo was taken by one of our Aurora reconnaissance planes as it was flying above the Stonehenge Tactical Cannons. As you cans see, they are now modifying the Stonehenge cannons to be the most powerful anti-aircraft weapon made by mankind. If this happens, our air superiority will vanish through thin air." The SACISAF paused to take a breath.

"We have to sortie all the best aircraft and pilots that we are in possession of. We shall call this "OPERATION SLEDGEHAMMER". 24 F-15E Strike Eagles will be launched to eliminate this threat. `Eagle' squadron will be the one tasked to carry out this objective. This will be a dangerous mission. You will be launched at exactly four hours from now."

"Good luck and God speed."

The Supreme Allied Commander walked out of the briefing room as the pilots talked about this. Ikari Gendo and Ikari Yui, ISAF's leading aces to date, walked to their son who was just a fresh recruit at that time. Shinji's eyes began to fill with tears as the ramifications of the briefing began to sink in. He knew that his parents will be deployed for such a dangerous task. He also knew that this was a very dangerous mission considering that the Erusians won't leave Stonehenge undefended.

"Mom, dad, promise me that you'll come back for me."

The two Ikaris only managed a small nod as they proceeded to share an embrace their son, knowing that it could probably their last…

Skies above the mainland: En route to Stonehenge

The 24 F-15E Strike Eagles flew in a tight formation as their twin Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-100 Turbofan engines pushed their 68,000 pound machines toward the skies above Stonehenge. Ikari Gendo, call-sign Eagle 4, led the group.

"This is Eagle 4 to all Eagle aircraft." he paused, looking at the data given by the onboard electronics. It told him that they were already close to the AO.

"Roger that, Eagle 4. Heading to new posit now."

All 24 Strike Eagles cruised at approximately 1,000 mph just to reach the target within the time frame. The WSO (Weapon Systems Operator) checked the air-to-ground avionics and the Mk-84 freefall, non-guided, 2,000-pound bombs that were hanging under the plane's wings. The electronics suddenly chirped when the radar showed 5 planes in a tight formation heading for them fast.

"This is Eagle 4. I have a tally ho on the bandits. Fan out and engage. We can't risk them disrupting our bombing runs."

"That's a roge Eagle 4. Moving to attack formation."

Author's notes: I've got the first part of Flashbacks and Interludes up. <sigh> I'm going to put up part 2 as fast as humanly possible. Please feel free to correct any mistakes.
