Shido slowly opened one eye and whimpered the name of the one the NightBreed had possessed. The one who had killed all those women to survive. “Fredrick…” It was the constable. There was no mistaking it. His voice, his arms, his face.

The man seemed to switch between the dark, shadowed breed and the uniformed man Shido know. “That's right, Shido. It's me. It's always been me. The one at the bar that night. Me. The one the one you chased. Me again. The letters. Me as well.”

The hand stroking Shido's cheek hadn't stopped, fingertips running over his skin. But unlike what he felt like whenever Cain touched him, Shido felt afraid. Sickened. His fists clenched at his sides. They were shaking as well. “You did it all? You killed all those women. Why? Why did you do it? Why did you let yourself be taken by this thing. Why did you allow yourself to become a monster?”

“I did it for you, Shido. So that you would love me. I love you. And you never very paid any attention to me. No matter how hard I tried, you never gave me the love I know you can. I tried everything, but you never understood. And then, then this came along. And I knew it could help me. And it was right. I had you. I had your attention. But you shouldn't talk about being taken by a monster. What about you? You aren't pure either. Not any more.” Fingertips brushed over Shido's neck. “But now, I know you could love me. You love that creature. And he's even more of a monster than me.”

“I don't know what you're talking about. I… I don't love a monster!”

For a second, Abberline's face darkened and his fingers tightened around Shido's chin. Digging into it. Hurting him. “I saw you two. I saw you in the park with him. You were going to let him kiss you. You have no idea how jealous I was of that. But now. Now these are mine.” Shido flinched as a thumb ran across his lips. “And I won't let that vampire come anywhere near you.”

“Vampire?” More things seemed to be clicking into place. Like the fact that letting yourself be taken over by a demon made you insane. There was no way Cain could be a vampire. Vampires were just myths. Fairy tale creatures. There was no such thing as a vampire. Just like the man standing here wasn't possessed by some demon. “I don't know any vampires. There are no such thing! You just doing this to scare me!”

A harsh hand pulled down the collar of his shirt, to the twin bruises adorning his neck. The constable leaned close and snarled into Shido's ear. “Then what is this, darling Shido? What could this be? You let him taste you. You allowed him to take advantage of your innocence. And now, I will rescue you from such things. I'll keep you safe. And all you have to do is love me.” Abberline moved back a little, still holding the young detective's chin. “Love me, Shido.”

Shido's eyes snapped closed when Fredrick's mouth descended upon his. Lips fastening to his. Strong hand keeping his jaw from tightening. Keeping him from biting down on the tongue that forced it's way into his mouth. Shido could taste the blood from the woman, coupled with a frightening need. Then Fredrick was pulling away, eyes smoky, dark. His free hand going to brush silvery bangs away from Shido's face.

“You could love me. I know you could. Why won't you? I did everything for this moment. Tell me, what is it about that creature that makes him so much better than me? What's so wrong with me? Is it because he'd beautiful? I can become that way for you. You know I'd do anything, if it made you love me.”

Shido looked down. “I don't know why. He makes me feel…different. I think he really loves me.” Shido admitted. “And I did like you. I did. But now… now…you scare me when you're like this.”

Abberline's face seemed to soften somewhat, and the darkness was leaving him. “You mean you loved me? You could have loved me?”

Shido nodded quietly. He could have. “Yes. You bought me candy. And you always tried to make me feel batter. But then you became scary. And you sold your soul. And I didn't even know you had. I wouldn't have let you.”

“Do you think that vampire didn't know? He knew, Shido. He's known from the beginning. That creature. The one you call Cain. He has always known. Do you think he loves you as much as I do? If he did, he would have told you. No. He doesn't love you. He's just using you.”

“It's not true! He does! He's not a monster! And you are! If I never see you again, it'll be too soon. Leave me alone, Fredrick. I don't love you. I love Cain!” A hand flashed and Shido's face turned to the side from the power of the slap. Then the constable was stroking his cheek.

“If you don't believe me, maybe we should go to the Chapel. That's where he is. He can fix this misunderstanding. But I don't want him to see you. Now that he as you so deep in his spell. I'm sorry I did that, but I have to free you from his influence. I'm not sorry I let myself be taken. I like the power I have now. And as long as I keep this way, you'll stay with me. I'll make you. You'll learn to like it. You'll forget all about that creature and love just me.”

“I'd rather die! I'll kill myself if I find another person dead because of you. I will!” Shido's eyes said he was very serious about that.

The touch left completely and Shido felt Fredrick let up and let him free of the wall. The constable's face was dropped. “Don't say that. I don't want you to die. I did this for your love. I made up the Ripper and became a killer. But I want you alive. Don't say things you don't really mean. I want you to love me. And I want you to be happy.” The darkness had gone away completely. “What would make you happy, Shido? I've tried so hard to think of that. And I can come up with nothing.”

“I would be happy if you didn't hurt anyone anymore. I don't want people to die because of me. I don't want any more deaths to be my fault.”

“Then that's what I'll give you. My last gift to you, as a man who loves you. But you have to do something for me. I want a kiss. Just a kiss. And then I want you to avoid that creature. He'll hurt you far more than I ever did. And I want you to walk away from here and don't look back. Because I'm going to give you your happiness.”

“I could have loved you, Fredrick.” Shido whispered and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek. Then the young detective ran off into the night. Away from the constable, standing there looking at him so sadly. He listened. He didn't even turn when a gunshot rang through the night. And Shido found that hadn't made him happy at all. Now he had yet another death on his conscious. And in the middle of it all, Shido knew what he wanted. What would make him happy. What he needed. He wanted to see Cain. And he wanted answers, once and for all.
